Great video, all the specimen videos in the series are. Phil your a credit to angling the way you communicate and conduct your self. A.D are lucky to have you as their ambassador.
A cracking session and an enjoyable watch from adtv again and a river I hope to fish for barbel one day although my local river the Wye holds plenty of them the trent certainly offers the chance to catch a chunk
Hi, watching this video, Phil stresses the importance of a baitrunner reel. Can i ask, are these set tight as to give no line, when under pressure from the flow or are the ledges heavy enough to keep the bait static in the flow? The ledgers look around 4oz? I suffer from the line continuously paying out when my baitrunners are on fishing the Trent. Thanks, Barry
Hello Barry, You will need to adjust the tension on the baitrunners so that the flow can’t pull line from the reel. A barbel will still strip line from the reel on the bite, a tighter baitrunner also helps set the hook 🪝 n the take 👌 Regards Phil
Great Video! 🎣 I grew up watching John Wilson, me and my children are now watching Phil and your a credit to our sport. I hope you continue to put out content, tight lines!
once again phil..a brilliant video those barbel were deffo mad for it....obviously the river conditions helped too!....i travel to the trent a few times a year...it is a bit of a journey for me as well ...so ya planning has to be right...and the end rig is definately worth a try on my next barbel trip.....tight lines until ya next one...hopefully some pike fishing to come!......
Thank you 😊 The combi-rig is great. I had issues with long mono hook links breaking in the past. The combi rig has never let me down so far! I often get asked for more pike fishing content, you never know what's around the corner? Regards Phil,
Brilliant mate well done, I'm on a mad pursuit for one myself on the upper thames but being thin on the ground and loosing 3, (2 in one night 😢) over the last 8 outings I'm torn between a trip on the wye or on the trent just to ease the pain and hopefully put a bend in the rod 😂
@AnglingDirectTV quick update for you, perseverance paid off finally with a beautiful 14lb12oz barbel. Thanks for all the tips and tricks and replies, it makes getting out there after a 12hr shift a bit easier. Tight lines 👍
Glad you liked the video 😊 I've caught barbel consistently on both the flood and ebb tides. The only time the fishing slows down really is when you reach slack water, either bottom of the tide or top. But as soon as it picks up pace again the fish get back on the feed. A great tip is to bait up at slack water as it's easier to get the bait down to the bottom neatly. 👌 Hope this helps? Good luck Phil,
The combi-rig works well on all faster flowing rivers. Using a longer hooklink definitely gets more bites 👌. The stiffness of the fluorocarbon makes the rig 99% tangle proof and super tough.
Thank you John 😊, I was using a 30inch Advanta folding spoon net. These have possibly gone out of stock, but the Gardner folding pan net in 26inch would be very similar. www.anglingdirect.co.uk/gardner-folding-pan-landing-net?queryID=bffad44f7e8787afd6f9b78c81d128ad&objectID=106237&indexName=live_ad_uk_products Regards Phil,
Hi Allan, I was using 12mm Sticky baits krill active. They are perfect barbel baits as they are pretty much a 12mm kill with a layer of paste around them. www.anglingdirect.co.uk/sticky-baits-the-krill-active-freezer?queryID=3b3f48595fe34e649e193147a4045f4a&objectID=92845&indexName=live_ad_uk_products Regards Phil,
Hi Phil great video myself and my son are fishing trent next week looking for barbel. We don't have a bait runner reel only fixed I was just wondering how we could possibly prevent loosing a rod if we happen to catch a decent size barbel? Any tips as we're both fairly new to fishing. My son has a ninja lure rod would this be capable of bringing in a barbel
Hi Aaron, If you use a non-bait runner reel be sure to loosen the drag when it's in the rest. Simply tighten the drag again when you start to play a fish. Keep the feed going in! The easiest way is to use feeders and recast every 30 minutes or so. And use strong gear on the Trent, minimum of 12lb line and similar hook length. The Ninja rod would handle barbel, it might struggle casting a heavy feeder tho, if you can find some deep water close in on your own bank it would be easier to hold bottom without having to use a really heavy feeder. Good luck, please let me know how you get on 🤞 Regards Phil,
@AnglingDirectTV thanks for the advice Phil though we draw a blank on our visit. Though the were a few others on our stretch of the trent who also didn't catch.
I struggle so much on my section of the Upper Trent. Only 1 barbel this year! Big decline in recent years but still big fish to be had. Could you advise what area / ticket youre fishing? Thanks, Barry
Seems the tidal Trent is still on good form, numbers of barbel of all sizes. Phil was fishing a stretch rum by Hull & District AA. www.hdaafishing.co.uk/
Phil was using the Advanta Barbel Twin Tip rod in 2.25/2.75lb tc. Depending on the weight you need to cast you can choose the right top section for the job. The 2.75lb section will cope with very heavy weights/feeders up to 8oz. www.anglingdirect.co.uk/advanta-barbel-twin-tip-fishing-rod?queryID=2a10dfc294cf1d4897f8a8323461e5c1&objectID=107670&indexName=live_ad_uk_products
Much better than the river wye video u put me through m8, actually worth a watch this time.. Shame ad made u put those 12ft garden posts on your shimano areo's they deserve more. 😆
Slightly confused as I’ve never filmed on the river Wye? Have you used the new Advanta barbel rods? I have been very impressed with them, perfect for big rivers like the Trent! Regards Phil,
Hello Mick, Phil was using Shimano baitrunners X-Aero's. 👌 www.anglingdirect.co.uk/shimano-baitrunner-x-aero-ra?queryID=dae882b2ce6b3c5042122761432f770c&objectID=40239&indexName=live_ad_uk_products
The OMC blend fluorocarbon in 15lb has been mega tough for me this Autumn. I've caught dozens of barbel from very snaggy swims on the same long boom sections. I just attach fresh braided sections when the hook gets spoilt. www.anglingdirect.co.uk/omc-blend-fluorocarbon-fishing-hooklink-soft-20m?queryID=40c806f298135837a94084d3e5e17f08&objectID=101723&indexName=live_ad_uk_products Regards Phil,

Glad you enjoy it! 😊
Great video and watch, top work !
Thank you Dean 😊
Awesome barbel video. Is this the Collingham stretch?
Hi James, yes but no 😆, It's a stretch that is controlled by Hull and District AA. It's the opposite bank to Collingham so in the same area.

🥳 A massive congratulations , that's a mega barbel! Captures like that are all the more rewarding when you have to put extra effort in 💪
Great video sir. Nice when you get to the river and its in top form. Any tips on when to fish the tidal ie when its rising or falling. Cheers pal 👍

@@AnglingDirectTV nice one thanks. I'm off on Monday and Wednesday. Cheers boss
Nice watch as normal. 120 mile trip for me, but it's worth every mile when they're on it. 😂
Thank you 😊
Would you only use the combi-rig for rocky swims like the Trent, or as a general river barbel and carp set up?
The combi-rig works well on all faster flowing rivers. Using a longer hooklink definitely gets more bites 👌. The stiffness of the fluorocarbon makes the rig 99% tangle proof and super tough.
What a great video that is the mighty river treat in true form I wouldn't mind knowing the stretch lol
Thank you Martin 😊, it's a lovely stretch of river.
