Just to add some perspective, last week I caught a 6lb 2oz chub. An immacuate specimen, it was my first six pounder after nearly four decades of winter chub fishing on the Yorkshire rivers. Plenty of 'fours', and quite a few 'fives', but a genuine 'six' has proved elusive. Maybe my old Avon scales have been harsh over the years, but it seems that genuine six pound chub are not so common up here!
cracking video phil.to be honest i've never used cheese paste and usually catch chub on luncheon meat.will defo be using cheese paste on my next river outing.thanks again.
Hi Phil, firstly what a great video. Watched it before but have just watched it again ready for the chub season. I fish the wye and watching you walk across tricky ground was curious as to what footwear you use as I find a lot of footwear is not that clever with slippery banks. Please keep these videos coming that are a pleasure to watch.
Hi Allen, glad you enjoyed the video. It's nearly prime chub time again. Phil uses either a neoprene boot or when it's really cold the ske-tex field boots come out. www.anglingdirect.co.uk/wychwood-neoprene-3-4-boots?queryID=8cb1acccdd18ab57ef4dd26df460ea96&objectID=23329&indexName=live_ad_uk_products www.anglingdirect.co.uk/skee-tex-field-boots?queryID=d62e94de8f3f0f4772408670248d1c1d&objectID=30881&indexName=live_ad_uk_products
I finally caught a genuine six last week, after nearly four decades of winter chub fishing in Yorkshire. The lower Nidd is a good bet for five pounders and the middle reaches of the Derwent can be good too. The problem with the Ure and Ouse is catching them at the right level with all the rain and snow melt. As they are relatively big rivers with fewer features, finding the chub can be tricky on short winter days.
what a fish in 59 years i have never even seen a chub that big on the bank although i knew of one on the upper severn that lived in a shoal of 3 fish i caught the smallest my pb 5 lb 10 ozs the biggest must have been 7 plus but that was in the 70s
40 years ago it was a roach mecca and of course at the top of stretch is the famous kickles farm and upstream of that the famous Adams mill. I count myself fortunate to have had such a great river to learn the art of angling.
Phil really appreciated your comment when you caught your first 6 pounder that you said“ in my world that’s a big chub” l think many of us loses perspective on what a big fish of any species is . Despite what we see in the angling press rivers are not full of 7 & 8 pounders. Let’s keep it real.
brilliant video there Phil you stuck it out well, and as you said it payed off, very very good filming to go with it, thank you, is any of the Wensum free fishing for me ??, 🤔
Haha brilliant mixing bowl carry on camping is it . I'm gunna have to get up to my local rivers and canals I'm in leeds so there Yorkshire waters so not massive chub but still if I cam get into em happy days
I'm always blown away how people are respectful and far away invested in chub fishing in UK. Here in France this fish have a quite neutral to bad reputation in général angler mind
Hello Mike, The rod was an Advanta RVS twin tip. Great rods that don't break the bank either 👌. I was using the 1.75lb rod with the carrier section and the softest quiver tip. www.anglingdirect.co.uk/advanta-discovery-rvs-twin-tip-fishing-rods?queryID=2eb6ef8199be7ab3306b685452d83378&objectID=95131&indexName=live_ad_uk_products My favourite mainline for that style of chub fishing is Gardner hydro-flow in 8lb, a nice tough line but soft and supple too. www.anglingdirect.co.uk/gardner-hydro-flo?queryID=c3c2b5323b81065fa11897fd6d51167d&objectID=69321&indexName=live_ad_uk_products Hope this helps? Regards Phil,
@@AnglingDirectTV Hi Phil, thanks for the information. Sorry for the late reply. By the way I used your 5 five turn water knot rig recently with great success. It is such a clean and simple rig. Please keep providing content to your Specimen series, they have been great to watch and learn from.
Some are specific to the rod and some brands have use the same tips throughout their range. Best place to ask is your local tackle shop. They'll tell you about your rod specifically and maybe able to find something that will fit.
As Robert said, most rods have their own size quiver tips. If you pop into any of our Angling direct stores bring you rod with you and the staff will be happy to try and find the right tips to fit.
If legering, the rod tip often shows a couple of preliminary twitches, usually (but not always) followed by a good solid pull round. They are usually bold biters (compared to roach), but that doesn't stop me from missing a few 'easy' bites! Quite often, if chub are present in a swim (often close to rushes, willows or alders) you will usually get a bite within half an hour. If not, it is worth moving to a new swim. Prebaiting with mashed bread and blue cheese can help. Look for the 'crease' where fast water meets slow and when the river is high, the margins can be good if you keep quiet. I usually use a lead that is just big enough to hold bottom and often use a 5lb or 6lb hooklength to size 8 hook, with a piece of soft white bread pinched on with blue cheese. Lobworms are excellent too, but chub can be caught on virtually any bait; good luck Mr Jasoll!
Michael Bellamy nothing too complicated, blue Stilton, cheddar, fresh bread crumb and a squirt of Sonu hemp and cheesy garlic liquid. I sometimes add a little mainline Polaris pop up base mix to make the paste slight buoyant.👌
Takes years to find those special Ouse Chub and barbel. The ouse isn't the trent etc.. You have to hunt for your fish and hunt well not hit and hope. Us locals keep quiet, its a special river. Bread in cheese paste, that's not cheese paste haha!
Phil Spinks Cheers for that, I do really well with the old fashioned 50% short crust pastry, 25% Extra Mature Cheddar and 25% Danish Blue, along with a teaspoon on turmeric or robin red. I’ll give your recipe a try next time 👍🏻
@@philspinks4142 Sadly the section of the Ouse you caught those chub from has been suffering from cormorant predation for quite a few years and now otters are here taking fish, they wiped out most of the big barbel on the Lakes Lane stretch (Adams Mill) along with a lot of chub, worrying times l fear.

Great persistence rewarded with some cracking Chub!!! 👍

Great video and Phil describes the trip very well. Really got me buzzing for the last few weeks of the river season! Well done. 👍

Glad you liked the video Stephen, Cheese paste is a deadly chub bait especially when the river is coloured. Have you tried it yet?
Great piece .. as always

After the all the recent floods I have found the best swim to be in the slack water just to the left of my fireplace. I'll get my coat.
Never had a six pound chub but I had 5 ,5 pound chub out of the river ure in Yorkshire one of the best days fishing I have had

I don’t think there is a better bait than cheese paste for finding chub. If they’re are there, they’ll be on it! Great video 👍

That sounds like great chub fishing Terry. Well done.
l wonder if the river still holds fish like that now, l'd heard otters had been busy there with few chub or perch caught now!
Superb fishing👍

I was wondering..these mighty floods over the fields!!..do many fish get washed over the surrounding hinterland and get stranded when levels drop???

Awesome video! What is the rod being used in this video?
Advanta RVS twin tip with 2oz tip in
Please could I details on the set up I’m a pure lure angler so looking for new bit of sport
Great video phil and team! Can I ask, what rod you’re using or what rod/ tip you’d recommend for this style of chubbing
Hi Neil, glad you enjoyed the video. Phil was using the Advanta RVS quiver rod. The 2oz glass quiver tip was perfect for this section of river.
Great video & photography
Were you using a feeder or lead set up with the cheese paste ?
Thanks
Hi Matt, Phil was using a simple link ledger set up with the cheese paste. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Well done wishing I was there
Thanks Kevin, we should be out chub fishing again very soon.
I may have missed your set up chap?
What a session.👍...what size quiver were u using mate?

Very tactful to not say why the Wensum is in serious decline
Sadly otters, and cormorants have ruined most of the upper Wensum. If I got started on that subject the video would of been several hours long.
