Thanks John for finally uploading the trilogy had been completed. What a fantastic 3 days you’ve had, brilliant we could all share it with you. Keep up the great work your narration, filming and editing is top notch. Have a lovely Christmas and all the best to you Rachel and the family tight lines buddy 🎣🎣🎣
Thanks for all the support and lovely comments over the year 💙 Really appreciated as always and it has been a special year for fishing, with the channel providing the incentive to get on the bank more than I’ve managed for ages. Have a great Christmas 🎄
I only wish I lived a bit closer but the cost and effort of the three day trip was well worth it as the memories are priceless. I also learned a lot about conditions and know the river is rarely that giving. Definitely need lots of rain and some low pressure for it to be so generous with big fish but I guess that’s what weather forecasts are for and, especially as the kids get older, you need to try and be flexible or opportunistic about when to head there. But it’s a stunning place even if the conditions and the fish don’t play ball.
Wow that is the magic of fishing a great day my friend very well done I loved it & with great passion & I cant to start barbel fishing in summer, tight lines
Thank you so much for sharing your fun John. It was nice that you referred to access because car safety has always been a concern of mine when fishing so being able to have you car close is a major plus for me. But what amazing sport you had well done, and it was worth the move in the end too. I hope you get to fish my local river again soon, it really is incredible.😊
Thanks for a lovely comment and I really hope to be back there in 2025 too. That river has always had a special place in my heart but it was particularly generous with the fresh memories it gave me this year 💙🎣🐟
Hi John Thanks for all the great videos, I really enjoyed them and appreciate you taking the time to make them. I'd like to wish you and all your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Peter
Thanks Peter. Your support and messages just like these have been so welcome. As much as I enjoy making them and the cash from UA-cam just about pays for my bait and petrol, I don’t think I’d do the videos without knowing that people appreciate and enjoy them. As I often say, the comments are the fuel of the channel and you’ve always been a big part of that 👍
As always John another corker, those Bream along with the Barble are always so special, your commentary the filming bait rods, this is the magic of fishing, excellent channel, tight lines, and happy Christmas and new year to you and your family...all the best Clive. ❤
Thanks as always, Clive - your ongoing support is much appreciated as you know and I’m glad you enjoyed this one too. It was a special day (and trip)! Happy Christmas 🎄
Was another good video. The pegs you are fishing I've been in a few times but noticed they have changed the peg numbers at the top end were you are was 96 and holds some big barbel best I've had from them pegs was 15lb 14 on meat when it was well up but had a few doubles in the nice to see daytime barbel. Kia is very helpful and landed a few fish and photographed a few. Geoff who lives in the white house is helpful as well talked to him a few times when I've been there keep the videos coming
Yeah, they are both top blokes 👍 That is some cracking PB too 👏 That’s what I Iove about the river - happy catching small stuff on a stick float but you also know there are monsters lurking… Have a merry Christmas 🎄
Same to you them pegs produce good barbel and I've never been at the weir there's some good pegs at the top what use to be the 50s but with the weather I would imagine the gate is locked
Cracking footage once again John, lovely fish, beautiful nature footage again, and I definitely have jacket envy as well ! Seasons best wishes to you and yours Sir !
Thanks as always for your support and kind words. The nature was pretty special that trip and just seeing sunshine after two wet days felt amazing! To catch a couple more biggies was the cherry on top. Do you know what, I think that jacket was a bit of a bargain on eBay! I wanted something for the spring and autumn when it’s not too chilly but you still need a wind proof outer layer in the evenings, if not all day, and it’s no particular brand but has served me well in the year or two I’ve had it. This is along the same lines… amzn.eu/d/5lGkdgX
What an amazing day John, very well done Sir.👏💥 Real Trent Torpedos..! You know, i just love the B-roll you film and use, it really adds to the hole experience, makes me feel like i can almost smell the river environment. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'s for that alone mate.. Can't wait for the next one.. 😊👍
Cheers mate. The Trent can be ridiculously scenic when the weather is right - which is interesting considering that many anglers think of it as a huge and almost industrial waterway with few bankside features. It’s true it can be a wide open venue and a little bit daunting when the wind is up, but on evenings like that one you can pretty much point the camera anywhere and get magic! As much as fishing for silvers is my favourite style of fishing, with my background in match angling, sitting it out for bigger fish definitely leaves your hands free for B roll a lot more!! Have a cracking Chrimbo and I enjoyed your latest release as always 🎣
Another great film John thank you, some great looking fish, nice big bream, some good shots of the Kestrel also, hope you and your family have a great Xmas and will be waiting for some new videos in the New Year mate, thanks again
Thanks for all the support, encouragement and comments, mate - it really is appreciated and words like this keep me going 🎣🐟👍 Hope you have a great Christmas too 🎄
What can I say, yet another great video for my Friday "fix" of armchair fishing. It brightens up a cold miserable day. All the best to you and yours for the festive season. Can't wait to get back to God's country, Ireland in the Spring. John.
Not toooooo long to wait now, John, although, yep, we should enjoy Christmas first! And then I’ll try to keep a few videos coming though the dark weeks of Jan and Feb 👍 Have a good’un and thanks so much for all the support 💙
I couldn’t believe it when I looked behind me and it was sat there! It even allowed me to close the distance by about half when I decided I’d pushed my luck enough and took the footage without zooming in too much on my phone. It wasn’t too long after that when the late barbel nearly pulled the rod in, despite the bait runner being on! Cheers 🍻
Just wow oh wow! The sound of the wind through the line is a fishermans magical tune and something to savour each and every time it is played! Amazing fishing and at a time when we could all do with a little winter boost since the storms have kept us from the bank. Myself and Kev are off for our xmas 'Dinnos dogdy fishing comp' tomorrow so we are going to have to hanker down somewhere out of the wind. You can guarantee though, your ears will be burning as we chat about this latest adventure of yours. Have a great Christmas and all the best to you and yours, and lets hope for another great years fishing in 2025! Cheers Paul and Kev :o)
I look forward to my ears burning 😄 Thanks for another cracking comment - your support has been much appreciated this year and knowing I’m entertaining people keeps me going when it all feels like a lot of effort. Tight lines for your fur & feather event and may the fish be biting, even in the cold. Have a great Christmas 🎄
Omg what a video just watched it Friday 20 Dec 24 brilliant watch and talking right through with tips etc.etc they is lots a new or old fisher person could take from this loved it Cathy wait to see more. Happy Xmas to you and the family hope to see plenty more in the future.. Thank you....
Many thanks for the kind words, mate and the same to you - hope you have a cracking Christmas and a fish filled new year. I’m hoping for the same ☺️🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟 Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for taking the time to comment.
The same to you, Pat! Thanks for all the views and brilliant comments on the channel this year and I hope there will be more to come in 2925 🎣 Have a good’un 🎄
Brilliant John, seeing that bream brought back memories of a golden day on the Gloucester / Sharpness canal 11 fish for 53lb best at 7-9. I imagine that I had a smile just like yours. Thank you 🧔 👍
Haha, smiles all round! Or should that be slabs all round? 🤔🐟 That kind of bream action on a canal blows my mind 🤯 Sheffield Canal was always nails growing up - a few nice gudgeon could get you in the frame. Have a merry Christmas 🎄
@themagicoffishing thank you John, Christmas greetings in return. it's a ship canal fed from the Severn, 16 miles long, 16' deep, 30+ yds wide and plenty of big fish of all kinds, it was a big surprise to me, I fished it for 7 years and got to know just a few stretches. 🧔 👍
Wonderful video, beautifully filmed. Super fish. It took me back in time to when I fished the Trent, a river that has its own personality and atmosphere. Thank you for providing that magic feeling. Stay safe and Seasons greetings.
Well done John , two more cracking barbel from the tidal Trent. You certainly caught the river when it was well up for your three day trip and bagged up big time. Having watched your video of the previous day when you fished peg 41 and did so well, I fished peg 41 on one day of my four day trip to the Trent in mid October. Sadly the river had fallen a lot since you were there and I did not have a single bite all day even into almost darkness. From the peg No sign it was a good ten yards down to the water and , as I said, not a single touch all day. That’s fishing,
Gutted for you mate, but really appreciate the comment and the fact you’ve had a go 😎 Conditions are (almost) everything with barbel as you say and I got very lucky 🍀 Also very wet 😄 You will get lucky in the future I’m sure and the Conveyor Belt field (my first vid from there) is supposed to be good in lower water… 👍🎣🐟 Again, small particles and almost constant recasting with the feeder. If you saw my vid at Gunthorpe earlier in the year you’ll know I’m not immune to blanks (and indeed on the Thames) either, but as you’ll know, they make the red letter days all the sweeter! Have a good Christmas 🎅🏽
Thanks Mark, that means a lot, especially when it’s all using my phone and one GoPro! Special places, special weather and special fish all help a lot of course! Really appreciate your comment and ongoing support 💙 Have a grand Christmas 🎄
I fished it on Tuesday for the first time what a place definitely be going back watching your videos inspired me to go and ky the bailiff couldn’t be more helpful 👍🎣🎣
He’s a good bloke - really keen to help people find the fish whatever the conditions and he knows his match style fishing as well as speci’ style angling. Really glad you gave it a go and may you get back there in 2025 - I certainly hope so. Cheers 🍻
@ yes he is I might try and sneak in another trip in first week of January it’s got me hooked forgot to say had my first ever barbel and it was 11.2 lb lucky ky was with me and helped talk me through landing it 👍
That was certainly a great session John, 3 days of top class sport, well done you. Have a great Christmas and looking forward to some more of your amazing adventures in the new year. 🎣🎣🎣
Thanks as always, Graham. It’s been an incredible year with the channel encouraging me to do more fishing than I’ve done for a long time! Merry Christmas to you too 🎄
Many thanks for your efforts John. Great for somebody like myself who's still finding his way with Barbel fishing. Definitely going to have a bash on the Trent next season 👍
Thanks Chris and I hope you do get to fish the mighty river. I’m no expert myself but try to time your visit with low pressure and with some rain having recently gone in if possible. I think the conditions are far more important than fancy rigs or special bait when it comes to bagging a barbel 🎣
Cracking few days there John, well done mate. I went there a few weeks ago and blanked. Them red letter days are just amazing sport. Merry Christmas and tight lines 👍🏻🎣
Nice video, The Trent is a great venue for Barbel, and to be fair a lot of other species as well. I was out yesterday on The Trent after the Barbel. River slightly in flood just started going down. Tight lines
I’m jealous of you having easy access - it’s always been my favourite river and favourite fishing venue full stop, which I write about in the book. So many different stretches, moods and fish. Thanks for commenting 👍🎣🐟
@themagicoffishing A book? Where can I buy one from? I've just been reading Bob Roberts The Mighty Trent. I was very lucky that Bob included the Cat I had from The Trent. I am looking forward to hopefully reading yours as well. Tight lines
Well done John, 3 days of great fishing. Bet you can’t wait to be doing it again next year. It’s definitely got me thinking about giving it a try. Been on the Don today, not the best conditions but still managed a few grayling ! Keep going with the great videos and merry Christmas to you and your family Jim
Nice work on a few grayling from the Don today - in shocking weather! I was in Sheffield this morning, at my dad’s, and then drove over the Snake to see some of Rachel’s family in Manchester, and it was snowing over the Pennines. Derby tomorrow and then all the way back to Surrey for Christmas. Yep, it was a seriously good trip to Collingham and aside from getting very wet I was mega lucky with the conditions. Would love to get back next year…🤞 Have a great Xmas 🎅🏽
Yeah it was a cracking trip and although I was quite knackered, and everything was very damp by the end of it, I was lucky enough to catch the conditions just right and filled my boots. I hope to get back in 2025 and just wish I could do it more often, but then there’s the Thames to continue exploring too… Have a merry Christmas and a fish filled new year my friend 🎄
Sounds like a good plan, don't mind there or frog island, look forward to it. Hoping to get out on boxing day for a few hours, found a few nice swims on the Bourne in Chertsey. All the best🐟🪱🎣👍
What a session some nice bream and a couple of double barbel looking forward to the next couple of videos hope you're wife sent you of a nice cake to last the three days
Haha, thanks Gary! She will be on Christmas dinner duty that’s for sure, although I might help out a bit 😉🍗 We’re staying home for that and have all the big teenage kids around. Hope you have a merry one and a 🎣🎣🐟🐟🐟 new year!
I hope to fish the Trent for barbel one day but it's difficult because I don't drive. As a resident of Yorkshire, I've fished the Wharfe, Swale, Nidd and Ure (some of which you may be familiar with as a Yorkshireman, John) for barbel, with varying degrees of success. I have a couple of days guided barbel fishing on the Wye next August, which is my treat to myself to celebrate my 60th birthday.
That is a brilliant birthday gift to look forward to and the Wye has been on my target list for a while as well. I know it’s suffering from all kinds of pollution in places but is still supposed to be one of our top barbel rivers. Perhaps surprisingly, I’m still to fish many of the well known Yorkshire rivers, as I so often headed south from Sheffield, but maybe this channel will give me incentive to try one day… Thanks for a great comment.
Never?! I suspect that man never wears anything else 😂 And I very nearly shared the experience with you - saw the massive weather coming in and actually texted a mate in Sheffield to see if he fancied a wild couple of days but it’s 3 hours each way for me from Surrey these days and something came up. Nice work for braving the elements!! 👏
Fantastic video John, what a river the Trent is, by the way did you know that the kestrel is no longer our most common bird of prey, it’s now the buzzard as the kestrels are declining at an alarming rate, so sad
Thank you Martin and, no, I didn’t realise that although I see a fair few buzzards around Surrey (along with red kites) and that was the first kestrel I’d seen up close for a long time. I was hunting along the banks all afternoon that day and I couldn’t believe it when I turned round and saw it perched on the post behind me in the slanting evening sun. Knowing that fact makes it all the more special 💙
Hmmmm, not sure I’m afraid but there are some really good instructions on the Collingham AA website about finding the place (which I used for my first trip), along with some great tips on how to fish it - collinghamaa.co.uk/
Who, other than a thrifty Yorkshireman, buys himself birthday presents "marcharley6465" aka "Yorkshire John" 😳 ?? ... I've heard that Yorkshiremen don't catch many Barbel because they don't like spending much money on bait, therefore they use swimfeeders which have no holes in them so that not a single maggot can escape 😳😳!!..... Just joking 😂😂❤🎣👍 lol
Steve, what I don’t show is the fish having a good rest before I show it to the camera and a good rest afterwards. That’s a given for me and it was out the water for a minute as I celebrate the special capture with viewers. Every fish I caught that trip was treated with the same respect and swam off strongly. If you don’t like my vids and all the effort I put into making and sharing them (for free) you don’t have to watch them. Try someone else’s waffle or give it a go yourself and you’ll realise it’s bloody hard work that maybe deserves some nice words. I totally respect your desire to see fish looked after but I can promise you they are.
@@themagicoffishing I accept you rest your fish and look after them. My point is that holding a fish up to camera for over a minute(not including setting up and down) is not necessary. You try holding your breath for over a minute and see how that makes you feel. You could(and others do) narrate over a still picture of yourself displaying the fish, it minimises time out of the water and still leaves you the opportunity to celebrate. I have no desire to make fishing vids. That doesn't diminish my point about fish welfare.
Fabulous video of some superb fishing.
Beloved River Trent.
Well done.
Thanks Chris! Beloved indeed and I only wish I could fish it a bit more often. Thanks for your kinds words and have a cracking Christmas 🎄

you certainly enjoyed your time up there. Brings back memories of my time in that field.
Great stuff John! Nailed on Friday afternoon viewing with a brew.
Cheers Smiffy! Have a great Christmas and here’s to a more mobile and fish filled 2025. We will have to get a spring sesh sorted at Marsh Farm 🎣
She will be on Christmas dinner duty that’s for sure, although I might help out a bit 😉🍗
We’re staying home for that and have all the big teenage kids around. Hope you have a merry one and a 🎣🎣🐟🐟🐟 new year!
Superb vid 👏🏻 nice one John
Superb comment 😎 Thanks for taking the time 🙏
Excellent video .
Excellent comment 😊 Much appreciated as always 👍👍👍
Interesting! Wondered what happened to the other day. Look forward to the watch how it goes over the next 30 mins!
Haha, yeah I saved it up me sleeve. Hope you enjoy it and thanks for all the support 💙🎣
Lovely fishing!❤
Thank you very much 💙
Great video😊
Cheers Mark - thanks for taking the time to comment and have an epic Christmas 🎄
Fished that same area 2 weeks ago in the middle of storm Darragh!! We had to bail out after my brollie literally exploded …. Kai was in shorts!!!
Hiya mate. What's the postcode for this stretch please
Stop waffling and get the fish back in.
