I'd put in 7-10 in my top 10thrash, but if you mean just Metal, for me that muddies th water too much! Alex! Something to keep in mind when reviewing this album: Ride the lightning ('84), Master of puppets ('86), and ...And justice for all ('88) form a trilogy of sorts. On each album the first song starts with a calm but misleading instrumental before blasting away 100mph (Fight fire..., Battery, Blackend). After this each album has a lengthy, kick-ass title track (6min, 8min, 10min). The fourth song on each album again starts slowly, kind of sounds like a ballad at first, but then speeds up towards an impossible guitar solo at the end (Fade to black, Sanitarium, One). On an LP (vinyl) format these songs are the last ones on the A-side of the album (Justice might have been a double LP, so in that case last track on the B-side). Also, each album contains an instrumental (Call of Ktulu, Orion, To live is to die) that's among the longest on the album (9min, 8min, 10min).
Some additional things to point out. Master of puppets and Justice both finish with some of the fastest songs in the bands catalog (Damage Inc., Dyers Eve), while Ride the lightning ends with the instrumental. Ride the lightning and Master of puppets have tracks that are clearly about the Cthulhu mythos (Call of Ktulu, The thing that should not be), whereas Justice has not. Also, the first two albums have a perfect number of songs (8), but Justice has an unpleasant number of 9. All amazing tracks though!
Anyway, cheers! Keep up the good work!
ps. Something for us metal historians to keep in mind: Iron Maiden made a "trilogy" of their own with Powerslave ('84), Somewhere in time ('86) and Seventh son of a seventh son ('88). The last album being the most progressive of the bunch, same with Metallica. I think it's safe to say that both bands were in their creative peak at this time.
