- In this show we have the New Kenwood Excelon XR600.6DSP amp and the Maestro Ar interface. We are connecting the combo in a 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 with the factory Alpine system. We are also up grading the factory speakers to Alpine R types and add 2 Kicker Comp RT 10's. We are using Stinger wire, Roadkill and FastRings also. Enjoy!

Love how you guys mount everything! More of the industry pros should follow these techniques across all basic installations.
Five Star Car Stereo channel is addictive... Been watching you guys for days now almost non stop, pleasent and informative, GREAT job!
Ernestom5 omg i thougth i was the only one jajajajaja cheers!!
Five Star, you guys are top notch installers. I have been installing radios / amps since before I was old enough to drive (now in my 30's) and your work is impressive. I just finished installing the Maestro AR and Kenwood amp in my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/Harman Kardon. Definitely could not have done it without this video. I would have had Five Star do the install except I live in Idaho. The instructions provided with the harness is incorrect and thankfully your video was able to verify my concerns with the wiring. For anyone else thinking of doing this install I have a few thoughts. The HK speakers...... well they just flat out stink. I connected the 12 speakers in the doors/pillars to the new Kenwood without major EQ adjustments and the sound is so upper mid heavy. There is basically no bass. I'm probably going to replace the speakers with nice 2-way components. My second though is that amp runs freaking hot. I have everything attached with a 2ohm load and even at very low volume just to get things setup it is still hot to the touch. Also if you have the HK system the sub has to go, it is complete crap. Thanks so much for making these videos! You guys have a wealth of knowledge and it's great that you are sharing with others!
These are going for around $300 now and still readily available. It's a slam dunk great deal -- would make a great upgrade to the audio in my GF's Tiguan. I'm thinking REAL hard about it!
The 5 star car audio fans never sleep, me included. we're all waiting for new vids! Good video as always guys. Thank you! thinking about getting this for my 2012 ford explorer.
+bigmann120 haha thank you
question. Have you had any of the Kenwood x801-5 amps get hot and the amp lowers the power output to cool itself? I have this amp installed and I think it does this. I run 2 tweeters, 2 fronts and 2 rears with 1 10" JL audio w3 2 ohm sub. my tweeters and fronts are connected parallel. so my front load should be 2 ohms, rear load 4 ohms and the sub is 2 ohms. do you guys see any problems with this configuration? Thank you for your time.
+bigmann120 no we have never had that with the amp, however it may be the speaker. Some passive crossover do this to protect the speakers.
Five Star Car Stereo ok cool I'll Check that out. Thanks guys for the response. You guys are the best!
This is a much better option than running a PAC IMO. And much cheaper in the end. If I hadn’t already bought a PAC, I would go this route.
This was great... love the smooth Jazz background music as well. I want this system in my Ram!
+Greg Bird me to, but I need the truck to. I miss my old Ram
Man! You guys do great work, your attention to detail is superb. I wish I knew of an installer in South Jersey as good as you two.
Try Suburban Audio, Collingswood NJ. They are one of the best and have been for 30 or more years. They do it right the first time, very professional.
I can’t wait to see the updated version of the review. I’m local if you want to use a non amplified ram to add one, full active 3 way and external amp for subs.
Seriously I need to get out there and this is the amp I want to run, adding a epicenter as well!
Technology as came a long way since 2011 when I first started installing
You fellas may remember that I used the PAC AmpPro in my 2016 And 2019 Chargers. For my new 2020 ScatPack I decided to go with this system. I gotta tell ya that this route was more gratifying as an installer and end user. But, there were quirks as you say. Vague instructions. Fussy interface with the app. No way to save presets (there are presets available but they don't save). Set it. Save it. Gone. That is frustrating. If Kenwood would put a little more effort into their app this would be the ultimate setup for Dodge, Ram, Chrysler, and Jeep with premium sound.
This ended up being easier to install and far cheaper than buying a separate DSP and amps. I used all six channels for the factory speaker locations and used the sub amp from my other cars in this install. Running Scar horn tweeters, Focal Integration 6x9's in the doors and rear deck, and dual JL 12's this system is the best sounding I have personally ever owned.
The mad scientist of car stereos! I love it
Great video guys!!! I personally own a rebel and this provides some great options. Thanks again guys keep up the good work!!! By the way I have to say you guys do some of the cleanest installs out there... Great work wish you guys were in Cali...
+Juan Melendez It was a super nice truck, the seats are pretty cool. Thank you very much
Best install on a ram right here
+Tone Tone thank you
Awesome vid thanks can’t believe how much car audio has changed from when I started messing with it in my 1st car a 84 rambler back in 93. Want to upgrade my 2012 ram 2500 ST system after buying my wife a new Mitsubishi with the factory Rockford system it makes my truck sound awful. I may do this thanks dudes
Class was awesome once again guys thanks
+The Beige Wonder thank you, no detention for you.
Amazing how complex radio's have gotten
+dbetts3087 I know right, but super cool stuff.
You guys really should start an Audio installation school.
Welcome to the near future of car stereo. as usual killer install.
+TTacoma haha that is to funny. Thank you
Phenomenal install and that new kenwood unit is bananas with the ar great video as always and keep them coming. Take care guys ✌️
+JustEnufCustoms thank you, will do
Awesome video. Very helpful. Thanks.
I am missing some thing in this video.... I want to replicate the install on my 2017 dodge ram 3500 but where are the front tweeters powered from?? the XR600 is powering the front door, rear door and sub. What am I missing here LOL... Amazing video though.
Agree. I think the dash speakers are channels 1/2 and full range. Then both doors are wired to channels 3/4. But I could be wrong.
The Bbox is a decent setup, beefy but mine didn't fit well into the area under the seat.
My Pioneer shallows only hit between 35 and 60hertz and that's it!
I'm going to sell the current setup, and run a fox acoustics box and P3's.
Thanks for doing the entire setup on the Ram, ill be back to it often!
+Chris Pritchard yes we just did an f150 Fox box the other day, man they are nice. 2-10" R type's
15:55 was that a doobie next to the Amp?? Lol you guys are smoking these installs. . Keep em coming
+James Stewart haha, Velcro paper, but totally looked like one. To funny
James Stewart lmbo!!!
Very interesting! Good job Kenwood!
+Alpha Omega yes good job Kenwood, now make a users manual
sure is a sweet unit, nice install
+sl265i thank you
The iDatalink units for both stereo and Alarm/Autostart interfaces are pretty awesome. And the company is pretty awesome for allowing consumers with knowledge to access their site for firmware downloads, unlike other scumbag companies... That's looking at you DEI....
Love your work
+John Perez thank you
Very well put together video, what is the cost of buying all the equipment and having it installed usually.
That’s cool. Epic as always my friends
+Clint L thanks Clint!
Ok I want it for my 2012 ram , factory alpine system !!
Very nice factory integration, great video Guys.
+Tim datoolman thanks Tim!
That's cool as hell. Looks fun.
+Joseph Inman so much fun!
I'm curious to how Kenwood has that gain set internally. Just to rated power at 1%THD? You'd think so. But the fact is the majority of the general public rolls around with the gains set hot and would complain that the Kenwood doesn't output the power it should.
Why is Fernando installing tweeters in the dash? They were not mentioned in the video?
I know this is an old video but what did you guys do with the center tweeter in the dash??
@Five Star Car Stereo Amazing video and I believe I may have watched this now ten times…LOL!! I believe you soldered the front tweeters to the front doors in the speaker harness allowing you to only use two channels for the fronts allowing the rears to be on 3/4 freeing up 5/6 for the sub. One question that keeps coming up for me is are the factory tweeters wired together with the front doors? I am almost complete with this install and was going to replicate your method but as I have a second amp for the subwoofer I can run the dash speakers from their own channels. Which option works or works best in your opinion? Thank you for the continued amazing content and craftsmanship!!!!
This Kenwood amplifier would be ideal for my system...not available in the UK though
Just my opinion but i`d say the PAC Amp Pro is a better option because one is not tied to a specific brand of amp which currently is the Kenwood or Audison or other brands down the road.
Also, the PAC Amp Pro has an optional optical output and the installation seems easier.
+CDP you definitely have more options with the PAC. To me they are just tools, and I love tools.
Hi guys what options are available for 2010 ram Laramie whit the alpine premium Sistem?
Beautiful truck with a $5 steering wheel cover
Ironically, many of their other customers have identical steering wheel covers. /s
Have you ever thought of having a tv show on discovery or hgtv
Thanks for the video. I just bought the amp and maestro setup for my 2014 grand Cherokee. I am wondering if this amp will suppot channels 5 and 6 bridged at 2 ohms. I have the jl stealthbox with a 10w3v3. Would love to have 400w vs 200w rms to that for some solid bass. Thanks!
All that extra unessecary extra stuff. The automakers and aftermarket companies are getting together to make the user spend alot more money.
Hey guys? Really clean install. Learning alot from your videos. Hey would you say this is a real tru 75 watt amp or lower? Also when u connected the speaker to the door harness, did u cut it or used a adaptor? Does the sponge really make a big difference? Also from reading up on the AR maestro, it says you can turn your factory bass control on the radio, into a sub volume control? Did u play with that?
Your guy's videos have been very helpful. I'm looking to add a 6 channel amp to my 2021 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack. I have already replaced all six speakers in the car but need more juice. The car stereo kinda sucks when it comes to amp output. So I was wondering if would you guy's recommend the Kenwood XR600 and accessories for my 2021 dodge challenger? Thanks in advance.
Was there any fabrication that needed to be done in the front speakers because on Crutchfield it says these speakers don’t fit in the front doors..im a noob and I am trying to learn 🤘🏼Thank you.
Dean- I’m going to copy this build for my 19 Ram classic where did you source the sub box from? Thanks ahead of time!
I is confused...near the beginning, you say you're putting in 2 pairs of 6x9s and tweeters in the dash, yet after we see Fernando installing those dash tweeters, they're never mentioned again. Near the end during the set up, the fronts are set up as full range with again no mention of the tweeters. So, did you have to change the set up mid install, or were the tweeters wired in parallel with the front door 6x9s or what? They can't be running off the factory amp since that was disconnected, so what's powering the tweeters?
Ok so whenever they took there ar maestro to the computer they chose which speakers in the truck to be flashed to the ar maestro, the tweeters were chosen but in the mobile app they didnt have to choose a tuning tab because the ar maestro is telling the amp that the speakers plugged into the amp are tweeters so it wont send send mid or low end freq to the tweeter, they did not have to add a crossover because the ar maestro is already telling the amp not to send mids or lows to it, not sure how the gain is adjusted but if i had to guess its tied into the same channel as the front and rear speakers, if you check the vid the amp has 8 sets of wire going into the speaker outputs, i believe on the amp it has dedicated outputs for your tweeters.
Great install. How can I find out at what volume level does the oem 9 speaker Alpine stereo have distortion? Thank you.
I know this is an old post but why didn't you just put the amp under the drivers seat where the original was located?
Did they make something like this for the non-amplified version of dodgers radios I had the 8 inch nav not amplify
I'm new to the Factory upgraded stereo thing, but I have a question. You added 2 3.5", 4 6x9s and 2 subs. Did you leave the 2 3.5's off of the amp, or did you run them to the same channel because they maybe don't draw as much power? I have a 2020 RAM Crew Cab and I want to put in a similar system. Just not sure how many channels I need for a setup like this one. Also, I listen to Rock and I am just looking for a tight kick drum. I would imagine a 10" sub would be better than a 12" for that purpose, but is 1 10" good enough or will the sub be overpowered by the rest of the system? Great video BTW!!
Thanks,
Jeff
❤️❤️👍👍👍
how long was this install?
question about the Alpine stock amp harness connectors. Do you know which metra/pac harnesses would match these? That Kenwood setup is slick! great video btw!
+Anthony B PAC has the t harness coming soon, no clue on Metra
hello guys, with that amp i need any device like lc7i to restore the signal or that's enough? thanks in advance. you are awesome !!
Are the rear tweeters and the center speaker dead with this setup?
Nice. I feel like I'm getting old...
+Filip A welcome to the club
Nice install! What channels are the tweeters running off of? Are they just parallel to the front doors? Thanks for posting the video
+Derek Gorecki yes they are just parallel with the doors.
How do you prevent too much power to them?
Question: When you did the amplifier setup using the phone app why didn't you indicate the front dash speakers on the app?
Hey guys just wanted to run something by you. I am thinking about using this to replace the Alpine system in my RAM as well. Is there any way to keep all 9 speakers working, using channels 1-6 as fronts and doors, then channel 7/8 as headliner speakers, channel 9 as a centre, all going to a smaller 3 channel amp, and then 10 as a mono out to a sub amp? Let me know. Great video btw
Hey guys did you have to replace any speaker wire in the doors? It seems like you just extended the speaker wires from the kenwood amp to the factory amps plugs?
What is the purpose of adding the foam inside the speaker housing and around the outer speaker?
Hello I love your videos. I just watch the dodge ram install video..
I would love to know what exactly fernando did to the doors for sound deadening.
I didnt even know about this kenwood option. I have a 2015 silverado double cab with the 8" screen no bose.
Since i don't have android auto, I was leaning towards a new head unit.
Ive been doing research all week and have watch several of your videos.
This is the set up im thinking.
Maestro RR, Maestro GM3+, Maestro Sat1, GM Antenna Adapter, Sirius 300, Metra 99-3014g..
Head Unit Kenwood DDX9904s/9903s (1st choice) or Pioneer 4201/4200nex. was going to look at Ilx02 as well.
Subwoofer 2017/16 Kicker L7S84 (with a rodney console box.. 1st choice) or PolK MM1 1042 DVC/SVC with me making a console box has a 9" cod.
Speaker Options: 17 Kicker KSS 6.75 & KSC 6.75 or Alpine 6.5" R-S65c & R-s65 or Polk MM1 6.5" 6502 & 652 or Kenwood 7" 1800 & 1800
For amp at first I was looking at dual setup but i want clean and SQ so I decided on 5 channel. Choices Pioneer GM-D9605 or Alpine PDX-V9 (1st choice) or Rockford Fosgate T1000X5ad.
Lastly was looking at getting a 2 channel complete ofc kit with a 4 channel rca add on not sure on length i need so i just did 17'. Options: Stinger 4000 SK4641 & SI4417 & 25' spkr role ($94) or Stinger 6000 SK6641 & SI6417 ($124) or Kicker CK4 & KI46 ($94) or Rockford RFK4X & RFI-16 ($91) or NVX XKIT42 & XIV45 ($80) or T-Spec V8 series V8-RAK4 & V8RCA-174 ($63 plus spkr wire) or Rockville RWK4CU & RTR174 ($65) or Sound Quest/Stinger Select SQ/SS1200XS ($40/$50 plus 4 chl rca)... Now i cant find strand count on the stinger series, sq/ss, and t-spec but all these have 1,862 strands on the 4 awg.(Kicker/Rockford/NVX/Rockville) Kicker came in at 111 on speaker vs 65 RF.
I know I also need tessa tape, and stuff to sound deaden. I did a full stereo back in 2003, but have also wired up full blown baja trophy truck race truck 2x over last couple years. I was leaning towards either doing install and taking it in to be rta and tuned or removing interior and doing the mounting and taking in for wire and tune.
I know its a lot to take it but i hope you will respond with some advice on my set up vs going with the Maestro AR as well as suggestions on some of the stuff i have listed.
thank you so much
+KeithMinnicksRacing so let me give this a try. To start the Ar will not work on your radio. The Kenwood would be a great choice, either one. The Alpine Pdx-v9 is going to be your best option for SQ (Pioneer has a pop). For speakers Rtype will give you the flattest sound to tune for Sq. Wire we use Stinger and Stinger select, we have used Rockford wire(nice).
Fernando roadkills behind the speakers and around the outside of the speaker. The foam is called FastRings. Let me know what I forgot
Five Star Car Stereo i just found the stinger speed wire. Im thinking doing that with the american speaker connectors vs all new speaker wire. I am leaning towards stingers 6000 series for kit. What about there gret video rca wouldnt i need that with kenwood deck. I was leaning towards pdx v9 i wish it wssnt so oldas in when released. On speakers both kicker kss and aloine are avail at best buy which is were i was going to buy tge soeakers from. Kss gas buy 1 get 1 50% off now and higher rms. I was leaning towards it over alpine. Is the ddx9904 better than 9903? I know nex just adds a camera for new year. I was going to use factory rear camera and get a front or dash camera for front out put. I dont need to go crazy on door sound deading just around soeajer and behind? I sas a video with full foam layers and stuff.... thank you
Which option shpuld i do for wire set up. Run all new speaker wire or buy American Intl speaker connectors and use either a speed wire type bundle or a speaker wire to rca adapter. Is that all my options. Now the head units all have rca inputs. With the RR and Gm3+ do i even need to tap into speaker wire or can i just go amp with rca from deck and american intl adapters? Lastly for tweeters if i put were the 2.75 are in the dash can i use that wire and just tap cross over into it? Thx for help ive decided pdx-v9, l7s8, either kicker or type r speakers, and i like the head unit of kenwood but thinkimg of getting older cause has hdmi and some other hardware inouts the 9904s no longer has
I just installed this system in my Chrysler 300. Curious is your channel 3 wired to 2 speakers in the left doors? And channel 4 to 2 speakers in right doors? I didn’t know you could do this. Thought each channel supported just one speaker?
Another awesome video! What part number for the tweeters in the dash? I have 4 older model Alpine R's 6"x9" in my Camry and used some Vifa tweeters from Parts Express but want to change them out. Thanks!
And just curious what rta set-up that was? I've used the Omnimic from Parts Express and really like it fr what it is.
+Andy Shoppa they were the Alpine SWR-10tw. It is the AudioControl mic for iPad with their app.
Come to Kauai and do my dodge! Please 😬... nice job guys what hiccups did you have. How much did this cost out the door?
+hawaiianpunch81 would love to. There was a plug issue( one not in the box) and an install manual not being listed. Normal stuff on new equipment like this.
How much does a installation like this typically cost?
Can I do this exact setup in a 2019 Laramie Ram?
Wondering about the box, was this a crew cab or a quad cab ram 1500? Also did you have to use any seat spacers for the fitment of the box?
I have an 2014 Dodge Ram Sport 1500 with the Kicker speakers. 8.4 screen will it work for mine?
i have heard many different opinions about this amplifier , i have heard you can only use these with factory systems , then i have heard you can use it with an aftermarket in dash headunit. which one is true?
Where I don't quite understand is, I have a 2019 Explorer with the sony 12 speaker system. I'd have to run extra amps to power all of the speakers and factory sub, correct?
How did you get the subs to hit I have the same setup and the subs are way to low and the tweeters are way to high
I guess I missed it but where did you make your firewall penetration?
Hi i have a 2012 ram with alpine stock system. Which plug and play harness do i use to add 2 amps. 1 for 2 subs. And other for the door speakers. Thank you
Did you replace the headliner speakers, and if so, how do you remove the speaker grills. I'd like to change mine. Ty in advance
What's a good 5-channel amp at a reasonable price?
+Squirrel Killa pioneer GM-d9605 or the Kenwood x801-5
Can you tell me what my best and cheapest option to update my factory stereo while keeping head unit. I have 08 acura TSX. I want to know what i would need to power my door speakers and 1 JL audio 12 subwoofer. The factory amp this isn't powerful enough. So what is the best cheapest 5 channel amp i could buy to power all of that. I know i probably need an Lc6
Can you help me . I just want to know what amplifier is best for Door speakers a/b or class D amplifier. Please think u.
Hi, i love your videos guys, i have a question, i have a 2009 ram 1500 3.7, do i need the maestro ar also? Can you give me an idea of a set up? I dont want to go to expensive, where in florida are you guys? Im in west palm beach. Thanks in advance...
Hi! I recently got the Kenwood XR600-6DSP. Is there any way I can turn it on jumping some pins in the iData conector, or something?
It´s for a home project, outside of the car.
So confused, website doesnt list 2017 ram having an ar
What would something like this usually cost to install ? I got a 19 ram 3500
Hey couple questions guys. I spent a couple months in 2014 trying to engineer this exact product but the can/bus in general was filled with too many steps for me to correct and i gave up. But anyway, question 1: why the crossover gap of 78 LP to 87HP? 2nd question: how is the bass output with two 8" woofers on the same power as the mids/highs? Im surprised to see 100 watts on each woofer perform well.
ASOME JOB
So what would you suggest for a 2020 ram non Alpine system.
hey so I just purchased one of these amps for my dodge challengers. is the amp wattage good and powerful on this unit? I have to save up for the other part of the unit so i have a couple more weeks to wait to get the other part then i have to wait a bit more to save for money to get it installed. such is life. but i got the first hoop jumped through!! lol!
What’s the positive wire color for the door?
So after playing with this install using the Kenwood amp and the aR, do you think you prefer the PAC Amp Pro and amp of your choice or the aR/Kenwood combo?
+Danny "Clownie" Bonneau the Amp Pro does give us more options for install for sure. We will definitely do more Amp Pro's then aR's. The truth is, I really just wanted to use the Kenwood amp. I wish it was not paired with the aR so we could use it anywhere. That amp is crazy
Is this amp on the iPad also?
why didn't you install the center speaker or the rear roof???
Not needed.
Didn't c u remove old sub
Hello and bonjour from Montreal guys. Great video, love the channel. I have a question. In my 2013 Charger (same setup as this install) I was looking to add a better Bluetooth streaming receiver to my setup. I find the factory Bluetooth streaming module a bit lacking in quality and it doesn't support higher quality streaming codecs. Is there anywhere in this setup to add a input? I know the dsr1 has a coax input but this setup doesn't seem to have one.
Thanks and keep up the good work.
Can the AR retain the center channel in the Ram 1500’s?
I’m looking to do a massive overhaul in my my 2013 Ram 1500 and I would like to retain my center channel amp.
check there website and select your vehicle, when you choose what to flash to your Ar you should beable to choose it, the customer in this vid just never replaced it.
thats if your talking about the speaker in the center of the dash.
Ey guys! would the Maestro RR include controls for heated steering wheel in its climate control feature?
+dEeM0nEy916 if it is on the factory radio it will be on the new radio
Ive never been to florida one only ca one.
+KeithMinnicksRacing we did CA 2 years ago, lots of fun.
Will this amp work with non amplified systems or only the premium sound vehicles?
Only with iDatalink, Chrysler and Ford vehicles using Sony or HK Premium sound systems.
Can this amp be used without a factory amp?Everyone keeps telling me it can but nobody wants to tell me how
I saw another video of this guys and they did mention you don’t need the maestro or ar.
Which I recently just bought Kenwood amp from eBay without the maestro.
