Reminds you of Maiden, in part, because this album was produced by Maiden's long-time producer, Martin Birch (pre-Maiden). No way does this album turn out as good as it did without Martin's involvement.
There are also elements of Rainbow in there. Iommis guitar tech at the time was DAWK, who had been working with Blackmore before. Martin Burch had also worked with Rainbow before.
For me, it's mostly the galloping bass which is pretty typical of both Geezer and Steve (even more so). And Martin Birch was good at getting it fairly upfront in the mix.
@@sex6cult9revolution it s good because of Tony Bill and Geezer.Their song writing is in a different level.Offcourse not at the level of Ozzy era because crazy transitions and Ozzy originality is not there
Someone I think who doesn't always get the recognition they deserve is Geezer Butler on bass. I've had the pleasure of seeing him at work from reasonably close up and he's absolutely dancing up and down that fretboard, but making it look like the easiest thing in the world. No flash, no fuss, just laying down the rhythm to Tony to solo all over. This track is a great showcase for that.

Even though RJD passes away in 2010 I still miss him. Saw him 7 times, 4 as Dio and 3 as Heaven and Hell. Was fortunate to see his final performance at the House Of Blues in Atlantic City on August 28, 2009. I almost didn't go. He still sounded amazing even though he was sick with cancer, he just hadn't been diagnosed yet. Dio always seemed to be having the time of his life when he was on stage, never saw a bad show from him.
Saw him on the Strange Highways tour at a festival during (arguably) the lean years of his career... Most of the crowd left after Motorhead played and there was only maybe a few hundred people there at the most. I was able to get up there REALLY close to the stage. DIO came out and played like he was at Castle Donnington in front of 100,000 people. It was truly an amazing experience and a testament to his love for his fans, AND something I'll never ever forget. He was one of a kind and I miss him so much! 💔 🤘
"You get to keep the gold that falls" I never knew that lyric since the original album sleeve omitted that last part in the lyrics, and my friends and I could never quite make out that line. Now I know!
This is my album of albums and there is just something that goes so deep musically. No one is writing albums of this calibre anymore. RJD is at his best here with Tony Iommi and brings out the best I have heard him play also. Fantastic!
When I was 12 a friend of mine moved from Scotland and introduced me to this album and Mob Rules and it got me into metal. I still try to listen to them as much as possible. Such powerful albums!
Missed this on vacation. My favorite Sabbath song and probably my favorite metal song and top 10 songs overall. The bass, the riff, the lead, the vocals, the lyrics wow even now.
Thank you for the awesome reaction, Doug! If you read this, might I nominate the whole album for a Masterpiece Friday? The album as a whole is incredible: Neon Knights, Children of the Sea, Die Young, and Lonely is the Word are all classic songs along with Heaven & Hell, and Lady Evil, Wishing Well, and Walk Away are all fun in their own way.
Great job Doug....as usual. I was fortunate enough to have met Dio back in the early 80's and he actually took the time to talk with me at length before one of his shows in Connecticut. At one point, Dio lived in Connecticut with his wife. He was a "real person and gentleman" and didn't let his stardom precede him.

A dude in one of my high school English classes tried to pass off the “They say that life’s a carousel…” section as his own poem. He wasn’t happy when I called him out on it. 😂
Someone in my English class senior year tried to pass off Aerosmith's "Kings and Queens" as their own. The teacher didn't recognize the lyrics per say, but she knew the student didn't come up with the words themselves
One of the stoner kids in my Junior English class copped Metallica's Escape word for word. Even be so lazy as to repeat the chorus "Lifes for my own to live my own way" exactly like they do in the song. It was so obvious that he had just copied a song. The teacher thought it was amazing. I almost spoke up, but I liked the kid and I'm very against snitching.
Thanks for the fine review, Doug, of Heaven and Hell! The song is a metal masterpiece! IMO at times, it seemed that Tony Iommi and Ronnie were born to make great music together! I find it interesting to note that two men of Italian descent, Tony Iommi from England and Ronald “Dio” Padavona from America, joined together to create some great music! You might have missed the mark on the most poignant lyric, however, of that song being, “The world is full of kings and queens, blind your eyes and steal your dreams. It’s heaven and hell!” That lyric has been printed on t-shirts among several other things. I had the pleasure of attending two Sabbath concerts with Dio on vocals. I have been a long-time Sabbath fan going all the way back to the Ozzy years, but Ronnie’s vocals, especially on this song, was spell binding live! He is one of my absolutely favorite singers, RIP.🤘🏻🤘🏻Cheers!
This song is in my top 10 of Black Sabbath songs, with Children Of The Sea as my No.1 favourite. The Heaven And Hell album is my favourite of the Black Sabbath albums also. I see no reason why you couldn't also react to a live version of this song also, as the middle section is different, and Ronnie makes sure the crowd interact with him, which is a good thing.
I love this song. I remastered it and brought the dB up for the acoustic piece at the end. I remember putting that record on in 1980 and thinking yeah Ronnie, that will do nicely.
I think the way Dio sings the line "I can tell" at 3:38 sounds absolutely incredible. He took the bonus points from reduced height and used them to max out voice, charisma and personality. Good choice, Ronnie!
Preach brother! The first song I ever sang live w/ a band was Dio’s Last in Line and it made me appreciate Ronnie from a vocal standpoint but also a lyrical standpoint. Took music theory, harmony & ear training, sight singing in college and was educated in various forms of music but I always find that music like this is what gets me going. Digging the channel! Thank you!
Been listening to this track since the 80s & even my son who's juz about 4yrs old in 2008 too knew that this is dad favourite track coz he knew I always listen this on my HP & on my car audio. And now he is already 18 yrs old played this track with my Jackson Dinky guitar too... Proud of him as he loves the 70-80s hard rock heavy metal songs. Juz like his dad... And DIO is a Phenomenal singer. No one can ever replace him.
This album is eternal. As music, it is a work of art that has endured the test of time. Dio wrote the lyrics, which freed up Geezer Butler from having to do it, and gave Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler room to expand musically. Probably my favorite album of all time. Dio is and always will be the voice I measure all others to. Thanks for doing this Doug....you ROCK!!!
A truly awesome piece of music in every way, never tire of hearing it. Another great analysis Doug. Note my photo here is me in my original 1980 tour T shirt that still fits me!
Hi, Doug. Here João Luís Martínez from Brazil. I've know this song since its release in 1980 and I still like it untill now. I agree with your brilliant analysis, especially about the lyrics. Congrats for the channel.
My parents who listen to gospel, country and western music bought THIS album for me for the FIRST vinyl album in my music collection when I was just 15 years old!!! I was literally STUNNED listening to this song over and over and over again!! BUT the most powerful part of the song....the whole song too me, has always been the sedate and subtle ending of the song!! HERE with all its power chords, deafening drugs, bass changes and Ronnie's laser like voice, that ending is the hardest to listen to, without sitting there wondering "What path do I walk?"!!!!! I think because the "pretty melody" at the end, you are just leave like "enchanted" and thinking profoundly about both Heaven And Hell is my point!!!!
Love that you did this tune today! Endlessly satisfying to see you moved by the music I hold dear....Also love your deconstruction of the lyrics (which is mostly spot on). Keep on keeping on m'man. The Daily Doug is consistently one of best...
Thank you Dougie! I totally enjoy your channel and analysis. I love that you describe the theoretical concepts...you've got a fantastic ear! "And they'll tell you black is really white...the moon is just the sun at night...and when you walk through golden halls, you get to keep the gold that falls it's Heaven and Hell"
Ronnie has just such an incredible and powerful voice, fantastic to listen to. You should check out Computer God from the Dehumanizer album, really great song. Great riffs, drums and of course, GREAT VOCALS. RIP RONNIE, won't be another like you
Doug, when are you doing a reaction video to Queen's second album Queen II? It's a masterpiece! And it only makes sense when you listen to it in its entirety.
I own a cassette tape from 1984 titled "White Hot - Masters of Metal". This song is on there along with tracks by Slade, Zebra, Triumph, etc. and I absolutely wore it out. I was 10 years old. The '80s were magical.
Great reaction and analysis, Doug! I was a huge Black Sabbath fan growing up, and this album began my love affair with the voice of Ronnie James Dio. The Heaven and Hell album was quintessential Black Sabbath....but with a more sophisticated sound. The Mob Rules album was even heavier...and is my actual favorite. You just can't replicate the sound of an Iommi riff and "that voice"! 🤘😝

A dude in one of my high school English classes tried to pass off the “They say that life’s a carousel…” section as his own poem. He wasn’t happy when I called him out on it. 😂
There was a fella in my art class who copied the album cover wholesale and passed it off as his original
@@terrypollard4657 there was a kid who sang the whole album at the school talent show, lets say he got pretty angry when I called him out on it lol
@@Roger8176 Against snitching more than plagiarism? Lol some people 😂
Geezer's bass always flawless.
Imaculate timing, I'm studying this number now on bass but I always lose the tightness somewhere, masterpiece ❤❤❤
One of my favorite hard rock albums of all time. Pure genius all the way through!
Sign of the Southern Cross from Sabbath’s Mob Rules is probably Ronnie’s best vocal performance of all time. You should do that one next.
It is a masterpiece of an album. Wise words there, amazing music. The whole album is a must listen to be frank
Love Dio and Black Sabbath. This is probably my all time favorite song.
RJD - one of the greatest frontmen in rock. Love this tune, love this album.
One of my top 5 all time favorite songs.
Brilliant reaction, sir. Your understanding and appreciation of this song has been refreshing.
My favorite Black Sabbath tune.....just a fantastic piece of music. Glad ya loved it Doug.
Im so impressed that you after 3 seconds or so you notes that their tuned down a half step! You certainly knows your stuff…🤘
My favorite song from this album, which is universally acknowledged as one of the best metal albums ever recorded.
I've heard this song probably over 100 times. Never gets old.
Great stuff as always Doug... RJD was just so good... so many great eras of Sabbath, but this is definitely a favorite.
A superb album. Not a weak song on it. 👌🤘
Geezer's bass lines are some of the most legendary in metal history. He can tell a story.
The bass line was written by Geoff Nicholls. Geezer just played it.
When this was released originally this was the last song on the 1st side...the final soft guitar was the perfect ending to the 1st side.
Well, this was great reaction. Worthy of the song, that is somehow so much bigger than one would expect.
Great reaction! This song has some excellent poetry! The lyrics to this song has the key to living, just like Stairway To Heaven.
Music scholar and perfect ear appreciating metal is so satisfying, kudos
I like that you comment whilst the tune plays instead of constantly pausing. Thumbs up
This album is eternal.
Top 5 Sabbath songs easily. This song is iconic.
Your musical analysis is so amazing. Love your work Doug.
Thanks for the great reactions.
I love how much you can appreciate all types of music.
🤟🤟
Love that you did this tune today! Endlessly satisfying to see you moved by the music I hold dear....Also love your deconstruction of the lyrics (which is mostly spot on).
Keep on keeping on m'man. The Daily Doug is consistently one of best...
Great song off a great album. I look forward to more!
Masterpiece! I especially like the outro and the extended live version.
When Ronnie joined Sabbath the first song Ronnie Wrote with them was "Children of the Sea" but you need to see the '83 live version....it's great!.
1983...wasn't Ian Gillian with them then?
About freaking time Doug!! 😅🤘
Awesome pick, the entire album is great. Please do:
Disturbing The Priest-Black Sabbath, with Ian Gillan on vocals.
Best song by far, that the band ever made (imo)
Its certainly one of the heaviest..love the album just wish they could find the tapes and remix
That's the song I play loud when new neighbors move in! Feel them out!
@@stevetobin7495 I've heard that the tapes have finally been found. So just maybe there'll be a remix to be released. I'm expecting Tony Martin's era of the band to get a refresh next.
