I dont understand this shit. I went sea kayaking on Lake Superior in March at age 15 on a school trip and had the same basic cold water training to be able to simply not hyperventilate myself to death, while trying to reach dry land, or boat. The US is stacked full of freezing water conditions that rival most anything on the planet. How are they not training on this? I've seen this time and time again. The US has the benefit of mimicking almost every environment on the planet and yet we dont train our conventional forces in those conditions, apparently.

Good video. Not just for soldiers. "just stay calm" great advice but difficult to follow when your brain has just been frozen to a standstill. Lots of respect for teachers and students. All professionals.
Remember, these are all tough guys... and here I am thinking to myself "wow some of them are struggling with the cold shock" - I like to think it looks easy, but appreciate this isn't anywhere near to what I'd imagine it to be. I can deal with heat, but can shiver at the slightest breeze, so not sure I'd be able to do it quite so "panic free". Good on them all. Amazed how some did it like it was an everyday task.
The ice breaking drills I did in the RM used to be done while wearing ski's, I've been out for a few years now so my question is have they changed that requirement now? Trust me none of that is really cold. It is a total assault on your senses cold is an understatement. I have been cold when in training rolling about in the mud but that is not the same.
Did something similar when on our training in the Alps. I hated the cardboard hard uniform when it froze on you. Must admit I threw up all of my stomachs content, and I was not the only one. Swiss Mountain infantry mortars.
Fair play USMC you didn't want to do it but you did and hats off to you its not easy by a long shot its the sudden shock that instantly hits you and thats where people die when the panic sets in.So its a good skillset to have because we could be fighting our next WARS in the ARTIC you just never know 🇬🇧🇺🇸
Don't want to shit on the USMC but i'm surprised that for marines that they have not already undergone this type of training in the US out in somewhere in like Alaska during their first year training period. Good work though!
I dont think you understand how big the USMC is. Some battalions will go through the USMC mountain warfare school in bridgeport but if there is a partner program somewhere they will let other battalions go there as well in lieu of bridgeport.
Brave lads the lot of them. I'm a sailor and I know what the cold water does to the body. In there, you've got only minutes before the brain sends signals to retract blood from your arms and legs to protect the organs in your chest. You drown. Huge respect to our American brothers.
In all this Marines versus Royal marines debate, just let me say I wouldn't fuck with either of them, and I'm a 9th Dan origami...feel the power of my swan wrap!
CRIPPLED BEEF Eli Charlton cool, I’m American and I love the UK. In fact my fiancé is English and we have twins due in December. First in my family to be born in Britain in over 200 years. I’ve had family that has served in the armed forces as well my grandfather was a Maine in Korea in the ate 50’s in Hong Kong he started a pub fight with Royal Marines just to wined them up. My dad was in the US navy told me stories about the Royal Navy in Egypt in 70’s. Since 1862 the US Navy has been dry but one time they were docked in Alexandria next to a Royal Navy frigate and said all he could see was the men removing just bag after bin bag of beer cans and bottles off the ship. My cousin served in iraq with the Brits in ‘03. I can agree, Well it’s like that for everybody as you said . You have your loud mouths in Britain as well met a few myself. The British people Ive met that have been in the states have always been great. But for the most part the Brits I’ve met in the UK have been great and very welcoming. You’re English I take it? 🇺🇸🤝🇬🇧
I did this with training in China near DongBei, you need to control your breathing with a a hard push and fast paced respiration technique; at that point you hit a hot sensation through the body, it is surreal but I wouldn't say it's hard. Just breathe like you're hyperventilating, the heart is beating like a motherfucker but that's a sign you need to breath in rhythm with the BPM rate
Brook Wimbury that feeling of your nuts disappearing into your stomach 😪and not reappearing for a few hours lol, strangely enough I'd do it again 20 years after i last did it.
Nice to see our boys working with the Brits, we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Thank you to the British Marines for helping our boys. I was supposed to work with the Royal Marines back in the summer of 85, but our command felt that we needed more desert training.
Well it's the shock that would normally kill you if your not supervised and told what to do like the Doc said you gulp for air and then panic sets in which gets worse and worse than you drop to the bottom and its game over ☠️
English and americans together are a badass combination with not only normal soldiers but the British SAS and SBS and the US Marines 🏴🇺🇸🏴🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

While the Royal Marines fought against the Germans in Norway, France, and beyond, the USMC was busy bringing the fight to the Imperial Japanese in the Pacific. It would be interesting to see two WW2 vets talk about their experiences in their own respective theaters (I.E. Royal Marine Commando and US Marine vet sharing stories)
Salute to those young men for rising to the challenge! I don't know if I would have been able to do the same in those freezing conditions! Badasses! 👊🏾
I have lived in a town near the Hudson bay.It was - 40 on a good day.It is hard to stay calm when your body goes into shock when you hit the water. This training is intense.
Don't know what's worse!? The cold or the heat! Be interesting to hear from who's done them both, and get there opinion - full respect to both USMC & RM. I was a Submariner, different shit I know, proud to have served, really great to see such brotherhood!
Jumping in that water you soon find out you have three Adam’s apples. For anyone slagging off those guys, you can clearly see the effect of the water in a sense of panic and shock. That’s why the training staff were remaining calm and telling them to use aggression to get out. Good training
All you need to ask yourself is could you do any of this? The training, the mentoring? Then ask yourself if you would. These guys did. It’s always a pleasure watching professionals at work.
Watched a documentary many years ago about the Arctic training the RM go through. They marched 150 miles in 5 days carrying and pulling all their equipment and reach the end. Two helicopters land and a load of big burly guys jump out and start beating the crap out of the Marines, and I mean really laying into them. The whole point of the exercise was to see who even though absolutely exhausted still had any fight left in them. It was savage.
Good effort chaps i like my bath slightly warmer in a morning Seriously this helps so when shit gets real we all sing from the same hymn sheet Respect god bless you all
Warren Lawrence no you don’t. Although they are officially classed as the land arm of the navy and are part of the navy command structure, the marines themselves are not counted amongst the navy’s numbers and do not enlist/commission into the Navy, they enlist/commission into the Corps of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines.
Warren Lawrence they are a branch of the navy but Members of the Royal Marines are not considered to be members of the Navy as the RM is a corps in its own right. They are not listed under the total numbers/strength of the navy.
Warren Lawrence incorrect! The 3 arms of the U.K. Armed Forces are; RAF, Army, Her Majesty’s Naval Service. Her Majesty’s Naval Service is split into 3 separate branches: the Royal Navy (with the RN Nursing Service and the RN Reserve as sub branches), the Corps of Royal Marines (with the RM Reserve and the RM Band Service as sub branches) and the Naval Careers Service. So whilst members of the Corps of Royal Marines are a branch of Her Majesty’s Naval Service they are not members of the Royal Navy and their members are not listed in the numbers/strength of the Royal Navy. Don’t try and argue with a military family mate, you look foolish.
Royal Marine Commandos toughest mother fuckers on earth. Unless you're in the SAS , then they're just your average badass. :D Good to see our brothers in arms working with the RMCs.
@@TheIceman567 Yes. And not every American. I don't like every British person. :D Generally I like the American people and what they stand for though. We share many of the same values.
4:10 that’s what i love about our military, they know when to yell and scream at someone to get their shit together and when to be gentle and encouraging. It may be the same with other countries but all I’ve ever personally seen of American training etc they’re always yelling and berating them but maybe I’m missing the other side of their training as well
Molly King sorry that this is one year late but I think that they only yell at you when you are in basic training but once you become a marine it becomes a lot more chill
My mate did it for a Daily Mail photographer late 70’s early 80’s The bloke said ‘Can you do it again I didn’t get the best shot’ He didn’t 🥶 They had a tent nearby with lots of candles where you could change into dry clothes 😵💫
two totally different styles of infantry. US marines are heavy shock troops, Royal Marines are elite light Infantry commandos. That's like comparing an MBT to a Sniper Team.
Honestly a great description of the respective units. The RM Commandos have always been more of a raid force rather than an assault force, while the US Marines have traditionally focused on assault, while creating separate units within the Corps for more specialist missions like reconnaissance, raiding, UW/FID, etc... For those who might think that raid and assault are the same things, a raid is typically done to hit a very specific, smaller objective, without the intention of actually occupying it. The benefit of a raid in a conventional sense is that it can force an enemy to spread his forces out in an attempt to defend against raids, and if he doesn't, then the raiding force can overwhelm a local garrison, destroy valuable infrastructure and supplies, and inflict damage to morale. Additionally, raiding forces can seize smaller, but strategically valuable positions or assets in support of a larger invasion. An assault, on the other hand, is attacking a strategically valuable objective with the intent of holding onto it. For instance, seizing a city, or an island, and typically when those objectives have been armed and fortified to repeal attempts to seize it. Instances of an assault would be the city of Hue or Fallujah, the invasion of Normandy, or the Pacific amphibious invasion campaigns. Obviously both units can be used for other missions as well, as we saw RM Commandos taking part in the ground invasion of the Falklands, but on the whole, their training, size, and equipment make them best suited for their respective specialties.
Its amazing how many people here comment on things they have no experience on.i served in the DWR and as such we under took artic style warfare in case we had to repel the russians this is essential training to alot of nato troops that could find themselves using their natsacks for icecubes. Usmc are fucking awesome, well trained and well motivated and very well equipped.royal marines are better trained individually but dont have the numbers or the equipment to mount massive amphibious operations like the yanks who numbers are 100000 plus so we rely on more advanced specialist training to make up hence commando.either way these boys are very well cross trained and they are along with the kiwis and canucks are greatest allies.give them all the respect they've earned.
That brown patch at the edge of the ice is where the US Marines shat themselves just before they jumped in to the water. Looks like it might be a case of leave the arctic warfare to the US Army's 10th Mountain Division and keep the USMC to sandy beaches in the tropics. Am I right?
Iconoclasticnation USMC has a Mountain warfare school in the Sierra Nevadas. Of course not all Marines go through it. The USMC is big, much bigger than the RMC. Marines fly Hornets and Cobras, guard embassies, storm beaches, man naval ships, conduct recce missions, turn wrenches, drive tanks, etc. The USMC is a complete amphibious fighting force with many many diverse jobs and responsibilities. A better comparison would be USMC Force Recon and Royal Marine Commando. And lets all remember the USMC in Korea less than a decade after the south Pacific. I think their record stands for themselves. I also think US Marines and most Americans respect the British and your fighting spirit. And we recognize that you are one of our closest allies.
Arctic warfare lol who is the UK even fighting they have no enemies maybe a few idiots with guns or what the USA were in all types of wars with actual combatants everyone knows who has the strongest military the USA were always on top and will always be

Trust me none of that is really cold.
It is a total assault on your senses cold is an understatement. I have been cold when in training rolling about in the mud but that is not the same.
Followed by a roll in the snow and some pussers rum
Yes I thought the same , wearing pussers Planks were part of the drill

I dont think you understand how big the USMC is. Some battalions will go through the USMC mountain warfare school in bridgeport but if there is a partner program somewhere they will let other battalions go there as well in lieu of bridgeport.

CRIPPLED BEEF you’d be surprised a lot of people answer. Are you British? Do you like the USA and Americans?
Very brave troops. I'm scottish and think the usmc done amazing.
It's easy to watch it and say to myself "I could do this" but in reality it's one of the most difficult situations to be in. These guys are awesome
It's all about being able to manage the cold shock response effectively, if you can't manage it while in a combat situation then you're SOL
Trained by the best of course ;)
Fuck off.
The Jock you know it to be true ;)

Nice to see our boys working with the Brits, we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Thank you to the British Marines for helping our boys. I was supposed to work with the Royal Marines back in the summer of 85, but our command felt that we needed more desert training.
Holy shit, the instant shock that sets into some is terrifying! And these are lads who are at least somewhat prepared!
Well it's the shock that would normally kill you if your not supervised and told what to do like the Doc said you gulp for air and then panic sets in which gets worse and worse than you drop to the bottom and its game over ☠️
I've had to put the central heating on after watching that. Well done to our American brothers - great effort.

Good effort chaps i like my bath slightly warmer in a morning

So nice to see friends training together.
People keep talking about joining the army, but if you want to be a Royal Marine, you join the navy.
copferthat no you don’t, you join HM Royal Marines
Warren Lawrence he’s right mate

two totally different styles of infantry. US marines are heavy shock troops, Royal Marines are elite light Infantry commandos. That's like comparing an MBT to a Sniper Team.
@MrJohnycomelately21 ..... Marines are Marines
The World over...
@@robertnewell4054 nope
Nice to see two forces working together.
Fair play, that looks bleeding cold💪
