It’s hard for younger people to understand just how great and how big the Beatles really were. The music is timeless and we’ll never see the likes of them again.
Greatest Band of all time. No one even close. So many memories. They set the standard, did things that were not done before. Changed music. Showed things that no one had ever seen. Still remembered by us fans. You don't need a degree in music to make music and the music they made was just incredible.
Let’s talk about that remarkable LP cover photograph. It was simplicity itself - go outside the recording studio and traverse the crosswalk a few times. Okay, so traffic had to be halted briefly, but the out-take photos reveal there were no hordes of assistants, press handlers, light reflectors, camera equipment.....no towing in a VW Beetle to get the 28IF “clue” into the shot. Just four of the most famous people on earth, a few bystanders, and after a short time (30, 40 minutes?) one of the most iconic images of all time was captured on a roll of film. Marvelous.
It took only 10 minutes -- photographer Iain Macmillan shot six versions, all of which are included in this video. Paul selected the best one, which has become one of the most famous images of all time. It is the only album cover that does not list either the performers or the album title on the front.. In his book "Here, There and Everywhere," EMI sound engineer Geoff Emerick, who worked on many of the Beatles' recordings, claims that the album was originally intended to be called "Everest," and that the Beatles were planning to travel to Tibet to be photographed with the mountain in the background. (Pre-Photoshop days!) But there were disagreements about making the trip, particularly from Ringo, who reportedly suggested "Why don't we just get photographed in front of this building and call the album "Abbey Road?" It's an amusing story, but take it with a grain of salt -- the factual accuracy of some of Emerick's tales has been questioned.
He does look like he's in his forties and he looks so thin, maybe the stress of being the main man in The Beatles finally caught up with him even though he was always so confident in public perhaps he was different in private... who knows?
Wow all these years later and the Beatles are the only band that can bring me to tears with the beauty of their music. In my opinion the Beatles might be the greatest thing to ever happen in terms of happiness spread to so many people all over the world regardless of time.
Hunter of Liars - has it changed very much from the famous album photos we've all seen? Is there any group that tries to preserve these "Beatle" areas for fans of the future?
It's nice to be a londoner, yes, especially if the Beatles come from here. I have crossed on foot that pedestrian crossing several times but mostly drive in either direction passing Abbey Rd studios either on the right or on the left depending whether I am going to work or going back home at the end of the day. The graffiti on the wall is immense. They paint it white all the time every few months to cover the graffiti but within months it's all back again..
Part of their legendary nature is that they broke more boundaries and more new ground that anyone else before them or since them... In less than ten years, they literally changed the world of music, of fashion, of youth culture... the list of firsts attributed to The Beatles is almost endless... I am sad that two are no longer with us... both John and George died far too young. But I am so happy and thankful that Ringo and Paul are still with us and still performing and making great music and memories... after all, it's been a half-century since they fractured apart... and I was twenty at the time that happened... it broke my heart... but as John so famously said, "Well, we were just a band who made it very, very big. And you can still have us and hear us - you've got all the records..." Yes, I have all the records... and the memories, too.
Divine intervention brought these 4 lads together to create uplifting, amazing music that helped make millions forget the pain and agony of JFK's assassination a few months before they exploded on the world stage...I remember it so well and am blessed to have lived it. There will never be anything like it/them again.
Hal - you've nailed my thoughts exactly, There's good very good, excellent, then we move to iconic . There's a special category I call 'beyond iconic'. IN that category: Armstrong stepping onto the Moon shot, signing of VJ surrender on the Missouri, MLK giving his 'I have a dream' speech. And this photo says it all. It lacks all the pretention of the Sgt Pepper and Revolver covers, which like the first two movies were first in black and white and then in colour. The photo is really a very simple idea - and it simply says it all.
When you make an album cover where you cross a street, you don’t even think it would be more famous than another cover (like, Sgt. Pepper’s cover is not that iconic but is technically better) ! That’s my opinion haha
I got to visit this place last year. Adds so much when you then see the pictures of them getting ready to do the walk. Visiting here was a dream come true for me. To think....they were right THERE!
I went to Abbey Road studios a number of years ago and also drove up to Liverpool and went to John's boyhood home, the most jaw dropping thing was walking about three houses down to the end of his block turning right and down about 300 feet on the right side are the red gates of Strawberry field.
gdholmfirth I visited there in 2015 and you are absolutely right when you see the pics. Was there a guy still there telling which direction they walked.
Yup, I was there last Aug. /16 then went to Hendrix's flat museum, on to Liverpool and all of their boyhood homes and The Cavern Club. Found out a few weeks after we got home Paul and Ringo were at Abbey Road doing a promo for Eight Days a week movie and went out on the road and talked to some fans.......shit!.. missed that one.

I've been there a couple of times in the nineties. On one of those occasions the security guard asked if we would like to enter the courtyard. We did and he took a picture of us on the stairs entering the studio. It was pretty cool. I believe the series of pictures of them on the stairs were taken by Linda McCartney. The pictures are very telling. The end of the Beatles had already taken place but wasn't made official until months later, April of 1970.
A moment in time caught on film for an album cover that would become the most recognized in Rock n Roll history. Learn to respect those with talent. I don't know why people have to criticize so much. Our generation was about seeking peace and justice, and loving our brother/sister.
It's crazy but I just found out today 8/8/2019 that the same day that The Beatles shot that historic photograph for the Abbey Road cover (8/8/1969. 50th Anniversary) was the same day that Charles Manson and his "family" perpetuated the Sharon Tate killings. Two famous moments in the 20th Century that still resonate in culture today "one positive, one evil", happened on the same day.
The Picture that comes up at approximately 0:26 is the photo Linda called the 4 strangers. It's amazing how the walk turned into one of the worlds biggest tourist attractions and activities.
George became great friends with John and was already Paul's friend. Imagine being stuck in the middle of these two during a rocky relationship. You'd feel uncomfortable to
With respect to SuperNevile posting above - perhaps THAT was the real message of the cover. The triumph that was All Things Must pass was only months away. Seriously though, I looked the quick shot with John and George looking distantly in opposite directions with Paul and Ringo hamming it up for the shot together. Though Ringo did work with both J and G after this (notably on Imagine), I think THAT is the true message of the cover, though admittedly with large dollop of hindsight. To explain what I mean. John became a political writer, George a religious writer - continuing on their own truth search. Paul and Ringo remained what they were: great musicians and entertainers, with Paul. of course, having a generous sideline as the greatest pop/rock-writer of his - or any other generation.
London is arguably equally important to The Beatles story as Liverpool. The swinging 60s had their UK epicentre in London. The Beatles made money and moved South, living in places attuned to their hippy vibe.
Eddie Shoestring - true but, as your own YT id implies, the early experiences are the most deeply ingrained ones. New experiences can compete and seemingly lead but they are very conscious elements, whereas music is largely unconscious, like, for example, accents. None of the four lost their Liverpool accents. Ringo has managed to get all Sunset Boulevard-y and can say the word "and" with an American twang but put him on a bus on Smithy Rd and he'd quickly blend in (given a suitable disguise etc).
Plus the gentlemanly southerner George Martin was a bit of a yin to their yang, and his knowledge of classical music was very useful in forming some of their songs.
I was in London in March (2017). Did the tourist thing with the wife and 2 kids, visited Abbey Rd. Studios, took pictures, held up traffic and walked across the street in the crosswalk. I almost didn't go to Abbey Rd. I am so glad I did decide to go. It was a highlight of my visit to London.
Chez, I also learned that the Beatles did not make any special arrangements or precautions (take out permits, hold up traffic with the aid of police) when they took their famous picture. They took the picture in the same fashion as tourists do today: Wait for a break in the traffic and take a picture at your own peril. Kind of makes the exercise in the crosswalk all the more special and makes one feel more connected to the Beatles. Cheers!
thank you! this is so beautiful -- and there are the sandals Paul was wearing..and just took them off for the heck of it. people who legitimately believe the paul is dead conspiracy are just intellectually pathetic
Actually, he had his sandals on for all the other takes. Just a hazard he took them off that one time. And the shot was chosen because all fab fours are exactly in the same position, their feet touching the ground, same distance from one another with the only difference being that Paul's right leg is in front while the others have their left leg in front, wich is fitting as Paul is a leftie.

We did and he took a picture of us on the stairs entering the studio. It was pretty cool. I believe the series of pictures of them on the stairs were taken by Linda McCartney. The pictures are very telling. The end of the Beatles had already taken place but wasn't made official until months later, April of 1970.
You are correct. Most of the out take photos were by Linda.
The most famous LP In the history of The Beatles
what they must've gone thru...the 'mania' etc ...the worldwide fame.....being the Beatles...only they know/knew.....////////.i love them
1:35 i love how george is just sitting.
I used to look at the album when i was a kid because my Dad had it, I had no idea it was London, I thought it was New York
Paul never died.
The Picture that comes up at approximately 0:26 is the photo Linda called the 4 strangers. It's amazing how the walk turned into one of the worlds biggest tourist attractions and activities.
Can you imagine just going there one day on a day trip and that happens?" Hay guess what I've just seen"..
Inigualáveis e geniais sempre. A foto histórica e icônica.
Que saudades dos 70 i .
George looks like he'd rather be somewhere...anywhere...else......
MrJohnTeacher I noticed the same thing. didn't take long after this for that to happen either
Full denim regret
George became great friends with John and was already Paul's friend. Imagine being stuck in the middle of these two during a rocky relationship. You'd feel uncomfortable to
MrJohnTeacher They all do!
The best band ever 😭💓💓💓💓
Hippies were cunts.
Only earthquakes have epicentres.
Grace of the song is so high;
I forgot to like
I was pressing the volume button then suddenly my hand slipped and hit the like button automatically
Their walk alone is better than entire career of Minaj and cardi B
i love it too
I was in London in March (2017). Did the tourist thing with the wife and 2 kids, visited Abbey Rd. Studios, took pictures, held up traffic and walked across the street in the crosswalk. I almost didn't go to Abbey Rd. I am so glad I did decide to go. It was a highlight of my visit to London.
Funny how four people could make one Zebra crossing so famous all because they didn’t want to go to Everest.
TrainHitsDymanite ignorance!!! Paul is very much alive
I bet neither of you have actually researched it. Otherwise you would know.
They NEVER wrote any of the songs they sang either!
@@aprilgarcia2161 what do you mean by that? Do you think that Paul is dead and was replaced?
Oh God!!! Don't give them fodder. Groan. It's not their medication time yet.
Beautiful and simplistic. Them in every way.
Paul done some takes with his sandals on because he wasn't actually dead yet.
And he still aint
Lol
And he's not pointing on his feet. He's just smoking
Was thinking the same thing. Those photos really do show the ridiculousness of the whole Paul is Dead thing.
Today, The Beatles would not have been there on the street, and the picture would have been photoshopped.... Bring back the good old days!!
A picture imortalized.
