Thanks for pulling all the research together on Ciguatera. You did a good job explaining what Ciguatera is, the symptoms, and how to get it (and avoid it). I’m excited to spear some fish now that I’m more knowledgable about the risks I face! 😃
Was waiting for this. I don't watch a lot of UA-cam. I would love to see a compilation of fish images and local names to avoid catching and eating high risk fish when spear fishing, for those new to the Bahamas/Caribbean. Would help around uninhabited areas.
@@Adventureman_Dan I'll be heading to St Martin first week of December then Bahamas after. I know none of the fish names, I should buy a chart and go through your video circling bingo fish 😆
Great video very informative, i got it from eating a parrot fish in the DR GOT THE WORST BATCH OF THE SYMPTOMS, took months for joint pains to go away and runs or soft stool for nearly two months. My stomach was never the same afterwards, i lost nearly 60 in 90 days yet was eating my fish again 6 months later. I was overweight and since then i’ve kept the weight off, so blessing in disguise i guess.
Great content. One thing I would recommend reading is SAS survival, it has extensive procedure on how to test food before consuming it, expose to skin and libs wait few hrs see if there are any symptoms first and move to the next steps which include digestion of small portions and see if there is any impact if there, the amount won’t be that much and you can handle it and mark it for the future for no eating.
Well done and sure to be very helpful to many. I've been following Nicole (sailing Artha) for a good while and that's how I came to subscribe to your channel as well. So glad you guys found each other and hope your relationship continues to grow and prosper because it seems you're great for each other. Keep up the good work, live, love, and enjoy life 🙂
Useful one and good one dan ... as others have suggested pics/colour drawings of each risk species might help. You also need to look at the phenomenon of Red tides. 🧙🏼♂️
Barracuda are well known for having ciguaterra. I remember I was surprised to see people eating them in Belize. But "when in Rome...". So I tried barracuda there and it was delicious. I remember reading an article about "cig" in Florida Sportsman Magazine as a kid and they said some people lose teeth and hair from catching it. They made it sound like it builds up in people and can kill them eventually.
In Belize we caught several mahi and barracuda, we ate the mahi but didn’t want to risk the cuda. The locals loved cuda and said they cut off some meat threw it in an ant pile , if the ants would eat it, they would eat it.
i got cigutera from my neighbor's mom. on a serious note, our waters are so polluted, its almost a given you're taken in higher levels of mercury and microplastics with all fish. mahi mahi is one of the fish with the highest levels of mercury
They do. It's just not really newsworthy. And if you have watched the video you should have learned that the fish accumulates the toxin from its diet if it eats the wrong stuff and ind the wrong area. So its more then unlikely to get it from more common fishes you get in restaurants like lets say Pollock or Halibut.
You cant tell a Dr what you have, they prefer to spend a lifetime looking for something else. Like when i had Borelia and told them, i know i have Borelia i have all the symptoms except face paralyzation.... They spent everything they had to find anything else. Only till the end say woops you really had Borelia... They think only because you havnt educated your self to become a Dr you cant know your own body, have seen this shit over and over again...Freaking pride...

Glad you liked it! I can't wait to be eating some fresh fish with you soon! :)

Thanks, I'll definitely put that on the list. It's important to know what's safe to eat!

Wow, you're actually the first case I've heard from parrotfish. I'm sorry to hear it was that bad.

Appreciate the advice, but this video is specifically about ciguatera.

Yes, it’s scary how it builds up in the food chain!
Long ago I heard that you feed a bit of the fish to your cat and then keep an eye on it. If the cat throws up, don’t eat the fish.
In Belize we caught several mahi and barracuda, we ate the mahi but didn’t want to risk the cuda. The locals loved cuda and said they cut off some meat threw it in an ant pile , if the ants would eat it, they would eat it.
That is not a good way to test for cig.

mahi mahi is one of the fish with the highest levels of mercury
It is definitely a concern! It's pretty scary, we have to be mindful of it all.
Is it al-gee or al-jee?
That was also the last time I had Cig 👌🤙
You were back up soo fast buddy!
Why do you think we don’t hear of people getting sick from eating fish in a restaurant?
They do. It's just not really newsworthy. And if you have watched the video you should have learned that the fish accumulates the toxin from its diet if it eats the wrong stuff and ind the wrong area. It’s not just related to bigger fish. Also species matter .
Yes!
Can't go wrong with a Princess Bride reference.
I must have missed it in the video.....can you avoid this by thoroughly cooking da fish ?
No you cannot.
Eat small reef fish, mo betta.
Hahaha I love it!
Offshore fish!
