What I used to do was put a piece of blunt glass outside in a bucket in direct sunlight. I'd let it sit there for a while to build up a nice mat of algae then I'd pick it up and place it in my tank. The various kinds of pleco *loved* it, they would in a few hours completely clean it off. You could see how excited they got when they were near the glass.
I just shot a video this morning about how discouraged I was about all of the algae in my 75gallon iwagumi tank. This could’ve come at a better time. Thank you father fish. As I said in the video, the aquarium game is a time game. Enjoy the process folks.
We have matting green algae in a water feature outside. We bring clumps,of it in a pop it in the fish tank. Our goldfish love to eat it. Our oldest fish is 16 our youngest is about 9, so clearly it’s not doing any harm. New to the channel and enjoying the content. Many thanks
Nice video. My goldfish really love to eat the algae that grows on the glass, and my cherry shrimp constantly eat the biofilm that grows on all the surfaces in the tank
Hi there , I've been thinking about two filtration systems, also about algae, snails plants and shell fish. I thought if it would be beneficial, add an undergravel filter, which had some synthetic fiber fabric, maybe a thin layer of sponge to prevent the soil from penetrating, then add coarse sand, and above the sand a layer of very small round pebbles, and then the rocks, sticks or drifting wood, and the plants; and the other filter I thought of would be the compartment filter behind the rear glass wall of the aquarium with dofeentes mayerias like onion bags, expanded clay, large and small round pebbles, coal, coarse sand there to add a transparent hose to bring the water to pass through an ultra violet lamp, to kill the algae spores, returning the water back to the aquarium, add aeration stones, in the transparent acrylic tubes that would take air to the undergravel filter; also add some shell fish to the bottom of the aquarium to help with filtration. I have a question about snails eating plants, and what is your opinion on an aquarium like this? Thanks in advance for your time.... .....I will be waiting for your reply. God bless you.........
I did this type system many years ago. The UG is counter intuitive for a natural system. Take a hard look at the Deepo substrate natural aquarium with its components. It is simple to install but the most complex natural system.
50000 is quite nice! This video about algae is very informative, algae are one of the big problems that can happen in an aquarium, the main one in mine. But it is only green hair algae.
@FatherFish I love your advice and come often to see what you have to say regarding various aquarium matters. On-top of that you make me feel less anxious in regards to your more relaxed aquarium handling style. I've learnt that keeping an aquarium does not need to be a stressed filled experience and that one or two problems may arise but can be confidently handled in time🎉🎉
Thank you Father Fish, this was interesting and very helpful to see the different examples so we know what to look out for. I like the way algae looks, growing on hard scape especially. The only time it bothers me is on the front glass and growing on plants stopping them from being healthy. I love watching my shrimp and snails feasting on it...free food!
@@sandidsaman7723 overgrowth of algae is usually caused by a combination of light and nutrients, usually light. You can put a bucket of water outside in direct sunlight with no nutrients and within a few days it starts growing algae, in a few weeks, if you keep replenishing the water, it becomes completely green. Put that same bucket in the shade and it will take much longer to see any green starting to develop. I have some unfiltered small tanks with a bunch of plant cuttings I throw in sand on the bottom leaves etc just a tank of water and 'stuff' lol and it gets the protien film on top. Its perfect there are live tiny food in the tank I tip all my fish eggs in these tanks and forget about them till I see the babies. They eat the little bugs and they feed on the ugly protien film on the top and I don't have to feed them at all till they get a bit bigger. I only clean front glass and pull hair algea out because I have had small fish get stuck in it before. I do not like blue green and cyanobac because some forms release toxins but theres a snail in Australia that will eat it called waterhouse snails I don't see it very often though.

my bristlenose ate the small amount of cyano in the big tank. I only worry about it in small tanks in a big tank if its only a little bit I dont freak out it comes and goes if it isnt going I syphon it out.
Congratulations ! 50k is a huge milestone. On to 100k FF! 💖 Question for y’all out there, would you say hair algae is directly linked to anything? I’ve heard it said that algaes can be from over feeding. I’m only feeding every other day or every 3rd day, what the fish will eat immediately. No nitrates, the tank is heavily planted with a 4” substrate.

My son is 10 years old and I want to start a Fish Tank as a project for him and I . I was thinking of starting a natural local tank with fish and plants we collect from our local ponds and streams . How big a tank would you recommend? I have been thinking 75 to 100 gallon at first
So a couple questions I have, I have only gravel, it’s a little dirty rn I could siphon it and clean it, I have plants and rocks, do I clean my tank and change half the water or do I just put some by stuff from the lake in the tank and leave it. And does this process only work if there’s dirt or sand as substrate. What do I do? 30 gallon tank with convicts
Father fish I really need your help :( I have two betta tanks and I have upgraded from silk plants to real plants, everything was going well but I have noticed that there are these tiny white bugs all over the glass, they’re everywhere! They must have arrived with the real plants because I never had this problem before I’ve tried waterchanging and wiping the glass but they keep coming back and they’re too small for my betta to even notice them they don’t even eat them, how do I get rid of them… idk if they are planaria but tiny or daphnia or copepods… I don’t want to keep them I want them gone what do I do
Take a deep breath and relax. Stop feeding your betta and he will eat them. They are microfauna and are perfectly normal and perfectly safe. The only reason they have multiplied out of control is because you are offering your fish an alternative to eating them.
Thanks for getting back to me! I wasn’t sure if I should have picked up some little neon tetras in the hope that they would see them and pick them off, I’ll try not feeding the bettas and hope for the best, how many days should I not feed for?
Another great video and congrats on hitting 50k subscribers. I have directed several people to Discord and UA-cam. I have a question for you. I have some cyano bacteria growing on the back and sides of the tank. At least I believe that’s what it is. It’s an acrylic tank and the only thing that will get it off is a credit card. It’s not like how you described. Is that because it adheres to acrylic better than rocks? Would you suggest I remove it from the back and sides of the tank too? Thanks again.
Guppies will also eat beard algae, I had a group of it that infected my tank while I was at college, so I added some guppies and it was gone within the week
ive been trying something lately where i dont remove the hair(maybe) algae and ball it up and shove it in a designated spot, so that its presence keeps new ones from growing on the moss. i think it works? i always get a lot of problems and nasty spread when i remove the algae entirely. would love to know if this makes sense
I once had some orange hair algae show up in a natural tropical tank I was doing. At first I thought it was synthetic fiber but upon closer inspection it looked like orange hair algae( had lots of green hair algae in the tank at that time). There was only ever a small amount of the orange but it was growing. Don’t know if it was a mutation or just an algae I had never seen before.
Father Fish, I have a planted tank with a gravel substrate for about a year. I recently added 2 inches or so of sand on top of the substrate and have since had 2 fish and 2 snails die. Any thoughts?
In Australia, most of the trees near any kind of body of water are gumtrees, which contain eucalyptus and are said to be very toxic to fish. So can I just use other debris and rocks to create my food web instead. Thanks
Put your leaves in hard dechlorinated water for a week. That should leach out the oils. If not, soak them until they dont smell anymore and then they are perfectly safe to use
Can’t remember the exact details but the Aboriginies knew that fresh gum leaves are toxic. They used to soak them in water to make them safe (cannot remember why?) or age them? Australian underwater biotopes are full of gum tree leaves and bits of tree. Seems that once they decompose a bit they are no longer toxic for the fish or any aquatic lifeforms. My method is to collect underwater detritus (already decomposing vegetable matter) from outside. I don’t collect fresh leaves. That way whether it is from eucalyptus trees is irrelevant to me.
Love father fish always answering the questions I get curious about specially when I suddenly get this question in my heaf but cant find the answer in google
Algea are a fascinatie category of organisms in their own right. And even can be pretty. But in planted living room aquaria i wish too reduce them to a minimum.
Nothing to worry about. If it makes you apprehensive do a 10% water change or add more plants. You might also consider the possibility you are overfeeding.
@@FatherFish the tank is well planted.. houses 40 kardinal tetra's, 3 pleco's 4 corri's and a whole army of shrimp.. feeding 3 times a week.. might bring it back to twice a week.. will do a 10% water chance and see over the up comming week..
@father fish - all my levels are great. And fish are doing well but I’m getting extremely high levels of phosphates consistently in my tub pond. Fish are doing well, just worried about prolonged high levels. What should I do? Thanks ib ln advance! Love all the knowledge you share with us!
I have several tanks all bettas except for one with two Angel fish. I get all sorts of algae in it I have to get rid of. I cut back on feeding. I think I was feeding them too much. So far it’s slowly going away. I’m not a fan of any algae lol
Sorry may be off the topic but I can find much video of you talking of cichlid. I have seen some videos of you with planted tanks. Can you talk about making an ecosystem for mbuna plants sourcing bio materials locally as in am in Thailand. I am trying to learn much of these fish. I love your Idea of ecosystem and I got in this hobby with this idea with a small tank now I want a big one and unlike you I'll be able to keep only one tank but I want to continue this eco system method but don't know how Looking forward for your wisdom
I don’t have algae, but I would like to add more sand. May I keep the fish in the tank to add a small amount of sand? Thank you for all you do! I have learned so much from you.
I’ve always liked algae, always loved the natural look of my tank and ponds when I let them go. I’ll scrape my front glass and sometimes sides but that’s it. Sometimes they look like LRB’s green water tanks haha

Спасибо вам большое ☺️
I am from Java Indonesia.
I like your videos.
Meu aquário:
* 170cm x 40cm x 40cm - Aproximadamente 15 anos
* Fundo biológico PVC com 2 bombas, cobrindo todo o fundo
* 1cm cascalho de rio (1ª camada)
* 3cm de basalto (2ª camada)
* 1cm areia (3ª camada)
* Algumas plantas (Elodea)
* Pistia stratiotes (alface)
* 2 lâmpadas comuns (luz branca)
* TPA - Nunca fiz, não faça !
* Anticloro (Protect Plus)
* Alimento (poytara flocos, bottom fish e abobrinha (zucchini))
Algea are a fascinatie category of organisms in their own right. And even can be pretty. But in planted living room aquaria i wish too reduce them to a minimum.
Thank u father fish for all these gemstones 💎
Thank you Father Fish for all of your wisdom here, my question is this, should i worry when my NO3 get to 175mg/ltr? I love to hear your word on it.
NICE ONE on the topic of algae and congrats 👏👏👏 on your 50K subs!
I’m starting to get the spot algae in my pond right under the spillway, I think it’s time to add some shrimp 🦐 🎉
@father fish - all my levels are great. And fish are doing well but I’m getting extremely high levels of phosphates consistently in my tub pond. Fish are doing well, just worried about prolonged high levels. What should I do? Thanks ib ln advance! Love all the knowledge you share with us!
You should stop inventing things to worry about. Research the role of phosphates in the cycle.
@@FatherFish thank you!
I love your Idea of ecosystem and I got in this hobby with this idea with a small tank now I want a big one and unlike you I'll be able to keep only one tank but I want to continue this eco system method but don't know how
Looking forward for your wisdom
Stay with me. We will get there.
I cant get enough algae for all my Plecos, Flying Foxes, snails, Flagfish and Mollies! I have to supplement their diets with algae biscuits.
I don’t have algae, but I would like to add more sand. May I keep the fish in the tank to add a small amount of sand? Thank you for all you do! I have learned so much from you.
start over.
@@FatherFish Father Fish, I’ve seen u advising others to simply add sand over fish. Why in this case would you advise a start-over?
Thank you! ❤
🥳 congratulations Father Fish and Father Fish Family on 50,000 subscribers 🥳
Thanks so much
Literally just added daphnia to my PeaSoup today. They’re with shrimp, but the culture will hopefully be a good food source for my Angels
perfect
I’ve always liked algae, always loved the natural look of my tank and ponds when I let them go. I’ll scrape my front glass and sometimes sides but that’s it. Sometimes they look like LRB’s green water tanks haha
