This is a 2001 Honda Civic. This removal DIY will work on most Hondas from the mid 1990s until today. The "Harmonic Balancer" keeps the engine vibrations down. This is important in keeping the motor running smooth and not tearing itself apart. You are dealing with a 19mm bolt, which is called the "Crank Bolt". This holds the harmonic balancer to the crank shaft. It is threaded opposite of the rotation of the engine, so this bastard is tighter than....well. It will take a load of leverage to break it loose. Once broken for the first time, you will hear a very loud pop. It WILL sound like you broke the bolt. Don't worry, unless your an idiot, it cannot be broken so easily. You will need (2) 1/2" breaker bars, several extensions to get this out of the wheel well, a jack stand, and some bricks. Once you get the bolt off, keep a very close eye on where the "Woodruff Key" is, as it will fall when taking off the harmonic balancer. This tiny, nickel sized, piece keeps the balancer and crank shaft spinning together. Don't lose it! Thanks for watching another DIY by Big Dave. PLEASE SUBSCRIBE, LIKE, and COMMENT.

thank you for providing a no bullshit video on how to take this part off just like anyone with normal tools would do. for some reason all the videos i searched for before this were "secret ways" and "mechanics show you how" like i have a lift and freaking airtools
Ahh the wonderful birds singing, nature at it's finest while dude is unmercifully straining his grunt on his Honda.
BEAST MODE ENGAAAAAAGE!!!!!!
My wife just heard me laugh and now I am being summoned to do work. Thanks a lot dude.
I love the slowed down version!!! Been there many times. I'm gonna tackle the one on my wife's van probably tomorrow. I used to rebuild engines stronger in my '64 and a '63 Impalas, but I'm dreading this one bolt on her van. Oh well, something's gonna happen. As long as the bolt don't break, it'll be okay. :) Thanks for the video! :)
I did my head gasket, timing belt and water pump last weekend. I didn't have the Honda tool for the harmonic balancer but I used your technique with the extension and breaker bar, and it worked beautifully after the first try. After hours trying to use a air gun that didn't even budge. Ty so much for your video
This really helped. I used your exact setup but I had to use a 20" breaker bar and then put a 3' pipe over the breaker bar to get it to finally break loose. One tough mother of a bolt!!! Thanks!!
My impact wrench didn't get it, but this method did, but only after I broke 3 extensions!
I stand on the bar with both feet and use both my weight and my feet to gently bounce the bolt loose while supporting myself with the car fender. I also highly recommend putting a towel or something over the bar and joints just in case something does break or fly off it will be contained instead of causing injury or damage. Also you don't really need a down bar if you don't have it, just a honda crank tool and leverage it against the bottom of the cars frame towards the back, it fits perfectly and the lip of the frame there helps to retain it.
Many useful tips i didn't even think about.
@@Tofix66 Yeah I felt that pain, that's a trip to the chiropractor for sure. BTW those are usually expensive racing tips passed on for free, maybe go to one of my channels and like and subscribe, one of these days I'll begin to put out a lot more vids than I have now if I get time edit and post.
Thanks for making this video. I had already tried heating / IR 2131 1/2 impact and compressor jacked to 140 psi. I put the crack tool/short 1/2 racket on the CV axle. The bricks and jack stand worked well. That didn't cross my mind. Thanks. It worked!!
This worked good. I rented the crank pulley holder from O'Rileys. If I didn't have that, I would have been screwed. That and I used a hell of a big pipe on my breakover bar.
When you're pushing down at about 1:38 ... you don't want to close your hands around the bar. Just cup your palms and when it suddenly breaks loose, you won't loose all the skin off your knuckles.
Even better to just stand on the bar and gently push with your weight and both legs while supporting yourself against the car.
Hey great video- I loved the jackstand idea. I think i'll use that for other projects as well....I used your idea on our v-6. The first thing it did was snap one of my extensions, so i tried again...this time i bent my breaker bar! that's one tough nut...so for the third attempt, i borrowed a 3/4 inch breaker bar and extensions....now it popped off with no drama at all. This wasn't a fancy snap on kind either. it was a cheapy set made in china! I plan on buying one just to have around. thanks again.
Great job and the video made me laugh! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. I used this exact setup, and it worked like a charm.
Great setup, had to use 3/4" socket/extentions/wrench with a cheater bar to get mine after breaking 2 adapters
Great video I found it very help full. How long is the extension you used?
Man thanks for showing this video I did exactly how you explain and wow it worked now I can get with my belt great instructions many thanks because honda
Thanks for the video, mine came off just as yours did. I appreciate the help. :-)
I used a Lisle weighted socket and an impact wrench. Worked like a champ.
stop by just for this legendary bolt break! hahah literaly just saw some comments and forwarded to it
Omg! Laughed in Joy when the bolt cracked loose!
that slo mo , groan was funny as hell man !!!
This worked great! I also used a 5 foot cheater bar and broke loose with ease!
Thanks for the tip with the jack to hold up the breaker bar and extension.
I loved the slowdown of the moment of victory😂😂😂
Thanks, your style will help me to break it loose, cool have a great day buddy
I wish I would have seen your vid of using the jack stand with an extension before I did mine. I'll try that if I have to do it again. I think I'd use 3/4" breaker bar and extension though. I bent my 24" (1/2") breaker bar doing this.
Thanks for the advice. Good info.
Thanks for the video, what size extensions did use for this job
Best thing I've ever seen. Tried a weak impact on a small compressor at a friends house yesterday. Watched this last night and without hesitation brought two more breaker bars and iron pipes to fit, Jack stands and bricks from my back yard and got it free on the first try.
great video if you spray the crank bolt with wd40 a couple of times the day before you try this it will be easier also you can turn the breaker bar to go in the up position and use a floor jack to lift the breaker bar while holding down on the ratchet joint
Just got it loose 2 min affer watchi g your video thank you !
Don't use a cheap or skinny breaker bar on this. They bend and can easily be broken on things like this. Get a heavy duty one. The last thing you want is for it to snap while you're pushing down on it and send you straight into the pavement.
What is the length of the breaker bar touching the ground? How many extension bars needed (Length)?
I just broke the crankshaft pulley bolt loose on my 2008 Honda Fit! I used a "3:1 Torque Multiplier ($257 new on Amazon)" and the crank pulley holding tool ($13). I ran a bunch of 1/2" extensions out from the multiplier and rested them on a jack stand and used a breaker bar with a 4 ft. cheater pipe on it and it broke loose. Even though the torque multiplier is rated for 1100 ft/lbs, I still had to put out on that cheater pipe. My 450 ft/lb. electric impact with the special crankshaft 19mm socket from Honda was not enough to break it loose.
Dude, I sooo know that oh so satisfying sound when a stubborn bolt breaks loose.
MAN OVER MACHINE! lol
2:09 the sounds of satisfaction...LOL...Good-Job!!
thanks for the video I had no idea about the key wow you just saved my ass
Thanks worked for me mine was big bad tight.
How did you know the harmonic balancer needed to be replaced? Was it making any noise?
LOL, great sound effects! Thanks
+Mike S lol....yw
+Classic Gamers HQ how did you tighten the bolt to the right torque?
Nice job. Im currently trying to do my 1996 honda accord but its so hard. I fractured both my foots by pushing on the torque wrench
Denn PR : I usually get them off with a strong impact wrench, but there's been a couple of them that were just way to tight.I just went ahead and cut the head on the bolt and bought a new one.Somtimes the harmonic balancer gets damaged when doing that,so I had to buy that also.
sounded like the specials olympics tryout when it broke free. when you try to break anything free, push down with fingers open. love how the geeky friend moved in for the kill to act like he helped.
Good job! I'm facing it at this exactly moment on my accord auto 3.5 v6 2009.. Fuck..g afraid to destroy something!
it worked thank you
How long was the extension from the socket to the car stand ?
You need a longer breaker bar. The length of the bar is directly proportional to how much it increases the force that you apply to it. In other words, a bar 2 times longer doubles your force, 3x longer triples the force, 4x longer gives you 4 times the force and so on.
To easily break this bolt loose take a piece of steel pipe and slide it over the handle of the breaker bar. I use a 5 foot piece of steel pipe and can literally break this bolt loose with one hand.
Awesome....thanks for the tip! =D
You are lucky then I guess some are harder than others. With a 5 ft cheater bar and two breaker bars with the adapter it took MANY MANY tries to get mine off my 96 accord
mine won't come off. I've done a lot and haven't got it too break. could I cut it off?
That whole arrangement with the axle stand on the bricks and you weighing down on that bar as it all flexes under load looks real scary, especially if something were to snap and all that energy were to be released at once. I'll stick to one of those special sockets meant for this task, a good impact gun...and a "Wing and a prayer."
Good for you. I guess?
What size were the two extensions did you use?
Woodruff keys are $1.50 at a Honda dealer, just incase you loose one. I always just buy one with the balincer, so I don't have to worry about it.
As someone who lost their woodruff key doing a timing belt change, I understand completely why you put so many cautions in this video.
Great video i used a impact and didnt work so i saw yr video and tryed it what followed was sucess.
I just did this 2 minutes ago. I never use extensions if I can help it. Extensions take nearly 1/3 of your torque off the socket. No extension, deep well 19mm socket and one size 13 bigfoot. Standing with my heel on the ground, push it down like an accelerator pedal. SNAP! Off she came. I did, however, miss out on the Sasquatch orgasm, lol!!!!
idk if iwouldve used an extention.. but to each there own lol wtvr works, good vid nontheless
this method im going to try on my is300 hope it helps me
Love that money shot g
Good luck,I used a 3/4" breaker bar and socket, wedged it to the frame,It has a manual transmission,so I put it in reverse and had a friend push me forward,I popped the clutch and all the car did was suddenly stop and bounce backwards, then I tried to hook my truck to the tow hooks and all It did was just drug the car down the drive way while the wheels stayed stationary, you might need a hydraulic impact to get this one loose,if you can't break it loose with the weight of the car you're definitely not going to get it loose with an air gun,all it did was put a dent in the frame and bent the breaker bar and it still didn't phase it lol.
admit it, it sounded like a Sasquatch having relations.
But I am trying to remove the head on my honda.
The camshaft snaped. It left metal deposited on one of the "bearings"(dont know a better name) the place the camshaft lays. And on the top of one of the valve assembly "collars" that holds the camshaft down also has had a metal deposit left on it.
I'll be having some machineing done. I HOPE.
If the motor will crank you can just spray the bolt with penetrating oil and insert a breaker bar through the hole in the lower A arm and hold it on the crank pulley bolt. DON"T HOLD IT WITH YOUR HANDS. Use a 2x4 or something to hold end pressure on the end of the socket against the bolt. While you are holding it have someone else crank the engine over and let the starter do the work. It has plenty of torque to break it loose.
works on only clockwise rotating engines
I am having trouble finding this tool.
Where did you buy it?
I found that if I heat the bolt with a heat gun to 150 degrees it comes off easily. I measured temperature with laser thermometer. Engine cold. Also heat the new harmonic balance in boiling water for about 30 minutes, it goes on easily; use gloves.
how do you align it so the woodruff keyy is off
🤣🤣🤣 love the sound effects
Alright so i have an 03 civic ex VTEC. And i have to replace my seal due to an out leak, now someone told me that in order to do that i would have to remove my timing belt and take all that good stuff off, i know i would have to take the ac and power steering belt off but isn't that it?
Nope gotta do time and get down to head to get top of it off to water pump to crank
Look at both those breaker bar flex... lol.
At 2:10, I make that sound too. She then says "Thank God".
I had to cut the harmonic balancer and the bolt head cause I tried everything and it wouldn't budge.
Is this a 2.3l vtec 4 cyl engine?
Just brace a 1/2 or 3/4 breaker bar on the frame cross pillar and bump the starter. Done in seconds.
Thanks. The part about the bear was funny. Just broke my '93 civic today. My 1/2 breaker with a five or six ft. pipe wasn't doing it and I was afraid I'd break something. Old civics do not used a hex tool, so I rigged a chain. I've broken a number of crank bolts, but never a civic! So I got a Dewalt XR DCF899 battery op impact wrench. Really powerful. Supposed to be 1000 ft. lb. It wouldn't do it. Finally I went to Home Depot and got a propane torch for $15. Heated the bolt for 45 sec. and doused with WD 40. The bolt came right off. The pulley came out your method except for a little WD 40. No problem. Younger guys I know just go ahead and muscle it, but I stop and think. Thanks.
Except the pulley is a rubber balancer as well and heating it is not a good idea, as it may overheat the rubber and will eventually breakdown without you knowing it.
Judging by this video, your a certified mechanic. I can tell 😉
kamaka96791 Indeed.....and im a doctor, lawyer, and work with NASA on the side.
Worked flawlessly on my ‘01 Civic EX (D17A2).. wear gloves though
I followed this video and got my bolt off with a 3 ft breaker bar and a 2ft cheater pipe. Impact gun will not work most of the time by itself because of the elasticity of the piston under compression and the motor mount.
so the second breaker bar has to be on the ground to prevent the pulley from spinning?
That is correct.
Classic Gamers HQ
Thanks, thats what I thought I think I got lucky in my case, my cheapo harbor freight electric impact was able to get the bolt off on my integra, I was shocked lol.
aw614 hahaha I just bought one too from harbor freight and it just won't do the job, I hate my si now.
That bolt will make you hate the car.
I still can't mine out... I hate my car... got someone coming with a 1 inch impact later today... fingers crossed.
It's just the Big Dave DIY way. =)
I don’t get why this bolt has to be the worst and hardest to remove. It was just like the bolts on a Dodge Charger alternator were also a serious pain to break free they were very hard and the one thing that sucked was it was near abs brake lines which made it worse
Great kk
omy fucking god this whole time i was trying to find a crank shaft puller and ill i need to do is wiggle out the puley like wtf i wated 1 whole day and never got it of now im doing it tomorrow like hell yes
did I hear, " I AM GROOT!"
yessir.
The extension and jack stand on bricks makes it harder than it is. Extensions causes torque loss. Since your car was jacked that high, eliminate all those except 1/2" socket and ratchet. While on the bolt with ratchet handle hanging, lay on the ground and grab hold of the tow handle. Then use your legs to push the ratchet handle back. Legs = 4-5x stronger than arms
Or put the breaker bar on the bolt, remove the fuel pump fuse and crank the engine for 1 second
Not to be picky but that is not a Woodruff key, it is a parallel key. Google it.
And...those wobbly bricks were looking to put some hurt on somebody.when using the bricks to raise the jackstand putting the second layer perpendicular (i.e. turned 90°) to the first layer would be way more stable.
My wife thought I was watching tennis.
What brand of breaker bar is that?
Harbor Frights
just pointing this out but he needs front control arm bushings.
How do you tighten it back down
Dont need much tightening, as the force when driving, works against it. It constantly tightens while driving. That is why its so hard to remove.
i lliked this video jus because of that slow mo....lol..to funny
+elijah whitehead It's good stuff! LOL
not a safe to remove crank bolt on top of those unstable bricks. Also, you should have used a suitable pipe for better leverage with that breaker bar
Lmao I don't have that on mine and none of these videos have mine it's not got the spot to grab with the tool you slip the shocket throw
Funny stuff!
=D Thanks for watching. This project was fun.
hahaha... funny!
Eah.. Ahehhh.....ehhhhhhaaaaaa......uuhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.... Eheahaaaaaaaaaaauuuurhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......
Haha, you sound just like me breaking shit loose. Lol.
It was hell to break, but worth it. Glad i cold help. =D
