I recently changed the timing belt on my daughter's 2003 Accord with the 3.0 V6. As I researched the process this bolt and it's removal looked like the biggest obstacle I would face. The research proved correct. Before I started I bought the special socket and tried to use it with my Craftsman impact wrench. It's pretty strong and after soaking the bolt with some penetrating oil I gave it a try. NO joy...didn't budge...figured I was doomed to chasing down the other tool that locks the crankshaft. However, sitting in my toolbox was my Dad's old Chicago Pneumatic air wrench. When he died I got it and a number of other tools that he used early in his career as a diesel truck mechanic. It hadn't been used in well over 50 years (possibly more as he moved on from being a mechanic prior to 1970). Anyway...the wrench was used so much that the 1/2 drive was worn down and didn't even fit well into the socket. I dropped some lube oil into the gun, made sure it worked, and that bolt spun off like a NASCAR lug nut in a pit stop. I was shocked to say the least (and very happy). Anyway....it's entirely possible the oil had some time to soak more...and maybe the original gun I used helped...but...the old gun just had a field day with that bolt. I ended up having to rent the other tool anyway to put it back on at the end of the job...(you can't use the air gun for that). So that is my success story with this bolt. I hope everyone has success with it too.

I got one. My '98 Civic had the 17mm bolt. It was amazing. The rigidity of this one really made the impacts of my old regular Sears Craftsman impact work great. It did wind up cranking the pressure up to 125psi and it did take two tries, but it worked. Without the tool I would try 10-20 times and nothing happened. The tool is amazing.

As much as people think this won't work, it does. I just used mine for the first time and tore that bolt off in a second. Amazing compared to fights I've had with these bolts in the past.
I bought both the heavy socket and the pulley tool. We tried the pulley tool first. No use, even with a long breaker bar. Came in a watched this video and realized why the socket was so heavy. Gave it a try and Vuala! Amazing!! Thanks for taking the time to make the video!!
yeah, it's so simple, but so effective. I had been using the breaker bar forever when my impact wouldn't get them loose. I haven't used a breaker since I got this socket.
THANK YOU! I'm a former tech and now a DIY guy. I've owned two Odyssey's and my current 2013 is needing a timing belt. I've done 4 timing belt replacements before on older models and the hardest part is always gettign that crank bolt to break free. I managed to get the other loose, but due to changes in the sub-frame on our 2013 I just couldn't get in there and get the leverage I needed working in my garage on the floor. Like most, I spent an entire day and broke an extension trying. I was at my wits end, but not ready to give up - HEY, this is a $1000+ job at any repair shop! I event bought a new 1000# Kobalt impact trying to make progress - nothing. Then I saw your video. $22 on Amazon and next day delivery - 2-3 zaps with the new impact, bolt came right off. I was fortunate to be loaned a Milwaukee 18V hammer drill to use with my lisle weighted socket and removal was EFFORTLESS!

It broke my tools using breaker bar and my weight which is around 450lbs give or take and didn't even budge with a impact using this exact tool. been trying on and off for the past 3 years different methods. time for the junk yard if a can't get a couple grand for it. 2008 Honda Ridgeline with 150k miles.
I bought it and you are correct, it busts that crank bolt right out of the harmonic balancer. This is the only way to go, even if you only use it once.
I have a blue monster jack to!! Best one I've ever had. Over 20 years old and still works like new.

I had to use a HarborFreight 1" drive impact gun with 1-3/4-1/2" adapters and Hi-Flow air fittings. My 1/2" CH gun could not loosen after 20 tries, heating, penetrating oil and so on. The HarborFreight item 68128 and you will need the adaptor set item # 67937. Major Pain!
How do you put back the crankshaft bolt and torque to spec if you don't use the pulley holder tool?

I can’t speak for all Honda engines or any other makes , Nissan , Toyota etc. , but I will say my 2002 Honda Accord 2.3 liter the crankshaft pulley bolt is right to tighten and left to loosen . Don’t know of any engines where the crankshaft pulley bolt is reverse thread ? The confusion is that the engine itself when running turns counter clockwise . That is why we can’t use a breaker bar and socket on the crankshaft bolt and click the starter to loosen the bolt . The engine will spin to the left and push the breaker bar to the right , tightening the bolt . Not only is that counter productive , but risking damaging the bolt as well . Just imagine the impact socket rounding off the hex of the bolt head . Worse things can happen such as the socket flying off the bolt and throwing the breaker bar who knows where , or at who . The reason why LISLE made this socket is because of the problem that the engine runs counter clockwise . They know we use the starter bump trick but it won’t work in this case , if the engine runs counter clock wise . A strong impact , a high torque is recommended , the heavy LISLE socket and the 50mm hex tool for holding the crankshaft pulley while using a torque wrench is recommended . The video creator did mention a comment regarding the 50mm hex tool but theoretically that tool is supposed to be used to hold the balancer pulley / engine from spinning while tightening /‘torquing upon re - installation . It seems today that the best option is the cordless impact such as the Milwaukee fuel 1/2” with something like 1400 ft. Lbs. is the way to go . Expensive yes , but so is a good strong compressor , accessories and a high torque air impact wrench . It would probably cost between $400 - $500 to get the Milwaukee , battery and charger but a good compressor , good air impact wrench and accessories will total much higher . Wish I had bought one when they first came out , price is up now . By the way , if you will be using shop air , get high flow 3/8” connectors . The studs and quick,disconnects are typically 1/4” and will bottle neck the pressure to an air impact wrench . Harbor freight has the MERLIN kit . Two kits will be needed because one kit only has one quick disconnect and you may need one on the compressor as well as the hose to the tool . 1/2” air hose is a good upgrade too . Now you can see why high torque cordless impacts are gaining in popularity . $$ !

Also used Pink Solution to clean the serp belt like new, no issues.

Hi mister, I’d like just to ask a question 🙋🏽. Hopefully you can help, I got a 95 civic coupe that has pulley with only 2 bands, so I’m adding power steering to my car and I need a 3 band pulley or main harmonic whatever it’s called, which I already got and plan to install. My concern or doubt is, does this pulley need to be marked where it goes, or just take it off and put the new one in? Does affect anything if just installed in without paying attention to like where it starts and ends?

From what I read, it's not "magnifying" but rather ordinary sockets flex thus dampen the torque. I guess the effect is the same.
That makes more sense to me. Good reason not to use an extension when cracking lose a tight bolt.
On the box of this socket manufacturer states "it has 3x the mass of a regular socket" so that equals to more force been put to the bolt through this socket. It works like a charm.
@@raw_pc From an engineering POV that doesn't add up. The hammer is where you want the mass. All additional mass being driven by the hammer (I.e, the anvil, the socket, and the mass of the bolt) all detract from the power of the impact. If you made an extension out of a 5" chunk of steel, rest assured your impact would have very little power left to loosen the fastener. What this socket does have is a lot of rigidity as K NG stated. When a normal socket flexes, the torque is transmitted into elastically deforming the socket and heating it up. Even minor twist can suck the power right out, hence how torque-limiting extensions work. Any data from the manufacturer stating that the weight helps is just marketing wank.

The Milwakee 2967 will do it with a regular socket. Its a Monster tool.
I agree, but the impact power is only "magnified" in the sense that the big thick socket doesn't allow loss of power like a thin walled wimpy socket does.

They make a tool to go into hex of pully,that you can put a 1/2 drive breaker bar in rest on frame and use a regular ratchet, by hand,no compressor needed,also holds crank in place for flywheel bolts,and cheaper than big ass socket
But if that BIG ASS socket gets the job done that's all you need. So why mess around with anything else?
Whoever thought about the physics of that is a genius. Who would of thought a few extra ounces of weight would make such an enormous difference in the lives , and time, of mechanics. I'd imagine that would work for countless crank bolts. Or what about old rusty suspension? Or old rusty anything?
Sounds as if the impact hammers faster when using the "special socket" as if it had been "turned up"?
When the clearance (flex) gets tighter the impact hammer can work faster, because the way from left to right will be less, i mean, if it wasn´t faked that would be a good reason in my eyes
I hear the same thing as if the air pressure was higher with the special socket. But I can also somewhat see how less flex can speed up the impact effect. Idk we weren't there but makes some sense I guess.

Cordless impact wrenches existed in 2016. That’s when I got my dcf899 and it snaps Honda crankshaft bolts like butter.
What do you do when your breaker bar square drive snaps off standing on it and this bolt dont budge?
Get a better and longer breaker bar. Use PB Blaster and let it soak. If you're doing it in your driveway, maybe drive it to a shop, have them break the bolt loose, then tighten it to the minimum they can, just enough so you can drive home. Impact really works the best. Twisting motion is not very effective
True... the vibration through the metal from the impacts really does the job. Maybe I should get tension on the breaker bar then whack it with a weighted hammer. Works on separating ball joints.
Gene Friedman Worth a shot. High quality breaker bars make a difference too. Cheap ones flex a lot, decreasing your leverage. Adding a thick 6 foot pipe to the bar usually does the trick too

That's pretty handy. I usually just use a breaker bar with a pipe against the ground and bump the engine over.

How you take it off without the pulley spinning
Your impact wrench works against the inertia of the rotating assembly. It works great. You need a decent pneumatic or electric impact wrench to make it work.
How much torque do I need? Looking at the Harbor Freight corded impact wrench. Says 1050 ft lbs max nut breaking torque, 300 ft lbs max torque. Is that enough?
corded no good, also HF take with a grain of salt. Milwaukee or DeWalt or Ingersoll Rand don't mess around.

Engine turns clockwise (when looking at the nut.) It should never be turned counter-cw. This will drive engine counter-cw if bolt is too tight? If the timing belt is marginal, will it damage the internal tensioner or break the belt (hence valves)? Or I worry too much?
The starter method seems to avoid this issue. But does the starter method ALWAYS work too?
A solution is to use the holder but isn't this massive socket too big to go into the hole of the holder?
It won't harm anything. The holder tool is used with a normal sized socket. The big socket only works with impacts
Ultra slow-mow of the two would show how it's better. Very little flex in the heavier bit

I’ve got one and it’s always worked great. However, our odyssey just snapped the timing belt(only 20k miles old) and I’ve been hitting it with this socket for a day and it’s not budging. I’m stuck at this point.

How did u get the pulley to not budge? Im trying to replace my crankshaft sensor in my 97 prelude. Useing pulley holding tool and a breaker bar. I tryed the bump it method. With no luck. Im not sure why because Im doing it on my own. I cant turn the key and look at the crankshaft pulley. Anywhoo. Thanks for the video. I plan on subscribing and watching more of ur videos. If u come across any 97 preludes w/obd1 conversion on a h22 motor. Id be interested in anything u may fix on it. :-)
Do not take any belt out. You will need an impact gun rated 611+ ft lbs or 1/2" extender, extend bar & then choke the Crankshaft Pulley down = that bolt is at 1,100 ft lbs due to years on the road.
Remove it in CCW.
ATG & I suggest to lube the ATG Crankshaft's Bolt with transmission fluid or blaster like.
Lube then wait or spray it overnight.
Do you have an impact gun?
It is best if you have an impact gun with ATG's socket.

I've done this method as well. Nothing broke. It works with a quick bump start.
This engine turns counter-clockwise. The breaker bar on the ground will tighten the bolt=sheared bolt, broken breaker bar, etc.
nobody did it using starter bump method for the exact reason you stated, glad you popped in.
Except you cant do this with a broken timing belt.

Screw that, breaker bar and a second jack. Install breaker bar and socket, stall tool, then just jack up the breaker bar. No need to guess if you have enough ugga duggas, cause that bolt isn't gonna fight 6k+ ft/lbs of the car pushing down on it.

Why isn't the pulley spinning when you turned the bolt? I can't see if there is something holding the pulley in place?
It doesn't spin when you use an impact. Only the bolt spins

It might. This socket boosts the torque so much, it's quite possible it would work. But there is no guarantee because you don't know how tight the bolt actually is.
All this videos are about removing Harmonic balancers but there are no harmonic balancers installations by hand on 96 to 2000 honda civics

That depends on how tight the bolt is, but I'd say over 1000 ft/lb breakaway torque is a safe bet. My gun is 1200 ft/lb breakaway and is plenty with this socket.
I can tell you for a fact that 600 ft-lbs didn't do it even with this socket. I'm bumping up to 1400 ft-lbs (M18 Fuel 1/2 High Torque).

A DeWalt 899 with 700 ft•lb and 1200 ft•lb breakaway torque works.
400lb torque codless dewalt impact gun does not do the job, so frustrated right now. I wish I had an air compressor.

Ii could be on as much as 600 to 800 ft lbs. Even 700 lb impact might not work. You need 1200 breakaway torque cordless impact which both Milwaukee and Dewalt has. Sucker will come off no problem.
Sounds like you have the DeWalt 889. The newer DeWalt 899 has more torque and will work. Maybe borrow one? Heck you only need it for 3 seconds!
So if i buy this socket then use it on my Milwaukee 1/2 inch drive impact, will it remove the bolt? I don't have a air impact, but my Milwaukee impact does claim 1100 lbs reverse impact torque. My only other option will cost a bit more for tools, would like to think this will work, I tried a normal socket with a short extention, it did not work.
I have used the Milwaukee to do this very task, and yes it does work with the socket. However, I live in a rust free climate. If you're working with rust, you might need to add some heat. Also, dont use any extensions because you will drastically reduce your torque output.

I made sure I had my impact battery fully charged and on max reverse torque, was a piece of cake. This socket really does work, I'm amazed and greatful for your video. Thank you for recommending it and posting this video!!... these Milwaukee impacts are some fantastic tools.

Honestly, you can just hold it with your hand and use your other hand to work the impact. Did it on my 96 Civic when I finally got that bolt off.

I need to change the cam belt on my Accord so you almost had me convinced, until I checked the price. It's $28 of your dollars, but here in the UK Amazon have it at £53 of our poor old pounds! I wonder if my belt will last while I save up!
Guys I just thought I'd share this little tidbit. This socket is now available in different sizes for different applications. 17-27mm in various increments. I think the 19-22 will cover most of the stuff you'll see. They need to come out with an 18mm though. I'm pretty sure I've run into an 18mm crank bolt before.

what keeps the pulley from spinning? why don't you need the holder tool to hold it?
They need to have a 30mm and 32mm for the axle hub nut. Those are just as bad - maybe worse - than the pulley bolt.
yes and no. make sure you take the center cap out, put the car back on the ground with tire so all the weight pushes the axle out. When it is up in air it is working against you. Old post I know, but its good knowledge

Im not sure why you would want to. An impact with a standard socket is adequate. If you're asking if the socket would be damaged, I wouldn't think so.
I used socket from Amazon with Aircat 3/4 1770 XL 1400 ft torx away and this bolt still didn't get losse. What else can I do?
