Nerds and idiots (like me) think its really cool despite not being very versatile or cutting edge. I got a used Korg Minilogue for about 400$, aside from lacking the drum machine and strumbar, it is better and has far more practical use for me and most musicians. But no other standalone device can make exactly the same sounds as the Omnichord, and it looks really fun. If I had any money I would own one too.
Also, nerds and idiots who were kids in the 2010s, may have heard it a lot in Adventure Time, and nostalgia usually = big payday.

$800? Did they only make eleven of them or something? Physically, this is an injection molded plastic case, a couple of small circuit boards, and maybe $15-20 worth of volume electronic components. It doesn't even have a display. I get that it costs money to reverse engineer and translate something old to new technology, but that's a fixed cost. They should be selling these for $149 - $199.
It's not 1985 anymore. You don't need to hire an entire floor of an engineering firm to devise entire RAM, ROM, and ASIC layouts to create a fixed function product. There are general purpose high volume microcontrollers that can do all of this, and more, on a _single_ $4 chip. It's also much cheaper to mass manufacture things than it was then, considering not only industry optimizations but also the advancements in design simplicity.

Obviously you should start working on that competitor.
This is a small batch device that the tiny company has brought back to the market because people kept asking them to.
Also, presume the cases for musical instrument are 3d printed. Master moulds for PIM are too expensive for the volumes.

Hopefully the MIDI implementation is less weird than the original, but I still don't know who would buy an $800 reissue when you can get an original for $400. Just looking at the speaker grille and the strumplate (which looks like they got it to fit by cutting off a corner with scissors) it's obvious the new one has significantly lower build quality.

Just wait. The second hand market will soon be flooded with them. There are people who have made good music with them but very few if any for whom this is their sole or primary instrument. The addition of MIDI is nice but if you are using it for that you soon realize it would be better if they cut the price and dropped the cheesy drum patterns and Casio like tones and just provided the strumming section! Then it would be unique. Of course, some including me, like cheese! We all need cheese.

For about half of that price you can buy a Casio Ctx-5000 or Yamaha Psr-E473 which gives you way more cheesy rhythm tracks to choose from and 100 times more sounds. The sounds on the omnichord are not that unique and most cheap arranger keyboards have access to very similar low-quality harp, strings, guitar, drums, etc emulations. If you really like the ribbon controller, there's plenty of kits and diy solutions for making one as a midi controller for less than $100. There's just no justification for this price outside of pure nostalgia-bait. The sad part is, I'm sure it will sell out quick anyways which will encourage companies to keep overcharging for their products.

    • @ebbyjones3177
      @ebbyjones3177 3 місяці тому +2

One needs to be able to construct chords on those keyboards. Some knowledge of piano is required. Not so with the omnichord. Different market. Less is more so to speak, just like Apple products.

You didn't explain the obvious bit which is how to use the strumming bit. Near the beginning of the video (48 seconds in) you seemed to be able to play individual notes on it too.

@@SpawnoftheEdjust listen to Clint Eastwood from gorillas you’ll see why it’s so expensive. Plus I think it was quite expensive for the time in the 80s. From what I heard it was expensive to develop with expensive electronics. It was overbuilt for what it was and I don’t think they cheaped out on this version either but due to notoriety and being built like a tank you either buy or don’t buy.

It's a very powerful tool, sure. But, at the same time, a more reasonable price for this would be $300-$500.

"non-dominant chord hand" is scary cuz i play guitar with my non-dominant strumming. i find that it gives me more precise fretting hands while giving my strumming more "oomph" because i dont have as much control over it, leading to more powerful playing

Does anyone know of an example online of someone using this as a midi controller and using it with software synths/instruments?

Tempted to pick one of these up (particularly for the midi out) but $800 is more than the value I'd get from this. Maybe I'll buy a used one in a couple years

Hi. Can anyone help me confirm whether there is an option to program a chord progression through chord memory like on the OM-84. I’m not seeing any information about whether 108 has a chord memory interface at all (even checking in the manual). Anyone have any updates on this? This is my main sticking point about the unit…

Thank you for this video, for my part I can’t managed to get the strumpart playing by itself. I always gotta press a chord with send big chord sustain. Do you know why it’s happening ? I’ll try to look up in the manual

Is any other company making an "electronic synth/autoharp?" I don't even know how to look for such a product. I don't need the drum beats or its historical connection, I just love the "press button for chord" idea

Thanks for the video! Question: When in midi mode - Midi Channel 1, If you press the chord buttons and strumm simultaneously, will that be translated accurately to the external synth you are connected to, or it is just limited in only strumming the plate?

How funny to see this again! I had one in the early 80’s and paid around $150 for it, which at the time seemed like a million dollars. If I had known they would be $800 someday, I would have held on to it. Oh well…..
