    Great review of the products. But none of them are affordable in India. All are humorously expensive.
    I am using a small Camlin color box (for children) that I bought 24 years ago (similar to that Cotman design) and squeezing tube paints into that. i love it very much because it has stayed with me all these years and I am still finding it useful.

    Very informative and good recommendations to beginners. The Pebeo ones are very pastel like and definitely not as vibrant as the others. The metal box would be a reason to pick them up though.

    I like the Koi or prima marketing ones so much better than windsor newton cotman. I have to really mine the paint out for cotman but the other two reactivate so easily!

      Yvonne Sun That being said, I'm thinking of getting a Sakura Koi Pocket Box set, when I save up enough money, maybe the 24 or 36 set since I like to have more colors. I'm just entering highschool now though, maybe when I get a job

      Sakura koi is really pigmented in my opinion too, that's the one I am getting, cuz right now I am using these super cheep ikea watercolors that I have had for like 5 years, and the are seriously not as pigmented as koi or any others that I have heard of.

    In India you get an artist's edition 18 shades set of watercolors nicely packed in a tin box by camlin. And it comes for just US $3. Another students' edition set of 24 shades comes for just a little more than US $1.

    Thank you very much for taking the time to make this review. After watching it, I bought the Prima set in “Classics” but I really like that they have sets for different environments. Woodlands, Tropical, etc. It’d be nice to add each set as I can afford to so I can pack the appropriate colors for wherever we’re headed. Neat brand that I didn’t know about. Thanks!

    I have the koi 24 sketchers box now, the quality isn't really that great, but I love how the layout is set up. My favorite part is the removable mixing tray because it goes over the paints and my mixes aren't over the top to drip down. I'm going to be getting st Petersburg watercolors next and I'm pretty happy about that, then hopefully upgrade to some artist grade paints after that!

    Great video! I had been trying to figure out of refillable pans could be used in the winsor and newton cotman box and now I finally have an answer. Also great advice about the lid of bottom mixing wells being raised up, I hadn't thought of that. Thank you!

    • @teohyc

      Only the WN pans will fit. They sell colours separately in pans too.

    • @pamela7411
      @pamela7411 8 років тому

      Yeah I thought so... that's why I was looking for a good metal box I can use. I also don't like the way the pans in the cotman move around (they don't seem to fit well in mine) when I'm picking up color and I'd like some more mixing wells. So the hunt continues for a box with a raised lid... Leaning towards the Prima Marketing... We shall see. You have great advice!

    Thank you for your video, I've been doing more and more real media stuff, and sort of accidently fell in love with watercolor but I can't justify shelling out a ton of money for it when its more just a "play" media for me, and not a media I sell in, I have a cake set from a well intended "art set" box I got as a gift many years ago that I started to play with on a whim and while they are hardly good I want to break into a better quality set.

    for Dutch people, Hornbach has a brand of watercolor Lucas, that is 12 colors in a plastic box for 9,95 E. Or 24 colors in a metal box, in 2 different metal boxes for 19,95 a piece/set. They are more opaque, but they are very good student Quality.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 років тому

      That's a good price!

    • @abbyrivers9971
      @abbyrivers9971 8 років тому +1

      it is, and Lindsay, from Frugalcrafter, has hadf a review with the artist Lucas and the student one.They had allmost the same results when tested. Beside the lightfastness, that isn t really tested ( to hard for non-manufactories). So it has a very good qualityu and is the cheapest one in Holland besides the brandless ones and the kids Crayola or Reeves. :-) I live to fas away and my bank doesn t offer the needed payment( don t earn enough money for creditcard uses). So I m waiting for a friend to travel to the city that has that shop, and take the watercolor back to me :-), I would buy, all3. they even have one for 24,95 E that has the 16 colors and half of the space is open to add more pans. www.hornbach.nl/shop/LUKAS-Kunstenaars-aquarelverf-in-metalen-kist-met-16-kleuren/3867077/artikel.html

      they add sugar next to gum arabic to their watercolor.interesting. But the White nights are very nice for the amount of paint, and nice to have those big pans to refil with a tube paint. thanks for the youtube about it. There are so much different brands, so it s better to know what to buy and what not to buy, and save money for the better set of paints.

    My first watercolors were Louvre (I wanted Reeves but Louvre was cheaper), and when mum bought me WN Cotman pocket plus, I loved it. No more worrying about binder separating from the pigment and molding palettes, and it comes with a lot of mixing space. I stopped using them for several months when I got daniel smith paints, though I felt bad and now I'm thinking of using them for journal sketches.

    Old vid, I know. But viewers in the USA might be interested to know this: If your budget can stretch to $56 (as of July/18), you can get a 100% professional quality set of 12 from Da Vinci. The colour choices are great, all but 1 are single pigments, they're fully lightfast, just as strongly pigmented as W&N Artist w.c., or Dan.Smith (much more intense than 'Student grade' paints like Cotman), and you get 12 full pans. Honestly, paintings done with these could hold up in a museum for centuries.
    (No, I'm not associated with D.V.! I use mostly DanSmith tubes, but am very happy with the few D.V. tubes I have, and I think the 12 pan set is a screaming deal.)
    The White Knights set in this video are also a good deal, but the quality is not quite as good. I haven't looked closely at the W.K.'s 12 pan pigment choices, but in general, that brand makes some compromises. But still good for the money, and better than most student-grade paints.
    Here are the Da Vinci 12-pan set colours:
    Da Vinci Yellow PY154
    Hansa Yellow Deep PY65
    Da Vinci Red PR254
    Alizarin Crimson (Quin) PV19
    Permanent Rose (Quin) PV19
    Phthalo Blue (Red Shade) PB15
    Ultramarine (Green Shade) PB29
    Sap Green PG7/PY42
    Yellow Ochre PY43

      The Paul Ruben pan set is what I would start with and put in DV as it empties. The Paul Ruben is much cheaper than the DV boxes, at 30ish for 24 colors while being very close in qualitg. The DV's true value comes in their tubes. They sell 30ml tubes for $15! That is insane.

    You can fix your mixing well problem by lining the edges with caulk, and also divide the big wells into smaller sections. I always line my palette boxes around the wells and outside edge to stop accidentally leaking paint in storage or transit. Just a thin layer will do the job.

    The Winsor & Newton Cotman are cheap on amazon, about $13 USD. I would recommend the Sakura Koi travel sketchers field palette which has about 24 colors I believe. They are also vibrant and cost $20 USD. The palettes used to be much more expensive at Michael’s but they are cheaper online, but price depends by store.

    Just let you know. I just bought a Pebeo box and you can fit 20 half pans without taking the tray out (7 top and bottom and 6 in the centre). The only thing I don't like is the colour which is actually a faint shade of lilac for some unknown reason...not sure how that's going to be when mixing colours.

    Teoh what you are referring to as a lower mixing area on the Van Gogh set I don't think is meant to be a mixing area at all. With form fallowing function I believe this area is meant to be used for adding more colors from tubes by putting little blobs of paint in the recessed areas and not as a mixing area.

      Generally, I keep them apart but I do mix some colours from different brands in the same palette. It's mainly to keep track of which colours are from which brands. If I mix them up, I will get confused easily.

      KazeChama yes they are lovely! I have a 24 set and a vintage 12 set (not the same colors as the 12 set they have now) but they are extremely pigmented. They are 1/3 cheaper than other artist grade watercolors, but I am thinking of getting some mijello gold watercolors as I think they would mix well with the white nights. I highly recommend them!

A couple of questions, Have you ever done any nudes, I am currently doing some copies of Rodin watercolor nudes and would appreciate any advice. Hello again,
    What do you think of the new Van Gogh portable palette design? It seems to me that it is less versatile. Also, have you ever tried Jane Davenport watercolours? Very affordable if you buy them from Michaels with a coupon. She claims they are artist quality. I did buy her set called "Brights" and I found it to be very vibrant indeed! I used it to make some mixing charts and to practice making secondary colours according to some of your other videos and I'm happy with the results. Oh, and when I made the chart using the grid, I followed the suggestion of one of your commenters, and I used the bottom triangle for the colours mixed in the palette applied to the paper wet on dry, and in the top triangle I mixed the colours on the paper. I wet the paper with clear water first and then applied the two colours I wanted to mix. Very interesting and I learned so much in such a short time! Thank you for all your demonstration videos!!
    PS The very first set I ever bought is the Winsor and Newton Cotman set just like yours and it's the one I just keep going back to.

      Van Gogh has many palette designs so I don't know which one you're referring to. As for Jane Davenport, I've heard about the brand but has not use the paints before. I believe I saw Lindsey the Frugal Crafter making a video on that.

      PS I still plan to buy it, though. I think the price is worth it just for the brush!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 років тому +2

      Thanks. I like that the box has 6 mixing wells. Having more mixing wells is very useful. As for its size, I can see that it's bigger compared to those 12 pan metal box and the Winsor Newton Cotman Sketcher Box. So it's not going to be as compact. As for the brush, once it gets worn, you have to buy a similar shape brush if you want to store it inside the box. Those 12 pan metal boxes can store more variety of collapsible brushes.

    Hi, thank you for doing this video. It was very informative. I'm not an artist but I like using watercolors in coloring books and art journals. I tried to create my own portable palette/travel box but within a couple of days the paint shrunk and shattered into a million pieces. I used liquid glycerine on a new batch of freshly squeezed paint, but once it set, I could not get any color out it. How do I keep the "homemade" half pans from drying out and shattering? Thanks!

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  8 років тому

      +Creative Endeavours Not sure about that why those paint would shatter. Sounds like they are too dry. Note that some paints when they dry, they will be difficult to reactivate. What brand are you using? You may want to read up Jane Blundell's website to find out more information regarding glycerine.

      Teoh Yi Chie I used cheap brands, Art 101 that I got at Costco, I tried both watercolors and acrylic and they both dried up and crumbled. I also used a student grade Chinese brand, Panda I think. Maybe they're too cheap and low quality and that's why they dried up. I will try with Winsor & Newton to see what happens. Thanks for responding!

      Maybe add some honey? Or gum arabic? Maybe get a couple empty pans (the little watercolor paint pans) and try putting a bit of the same type of paint, in each, with a bit of honey in one, and gum arabic in the other. Then wait a few weeks and see how they are.

    St Petersburg White Night have a number of paints that have unacceptably poor lightfastness. Some others are prettified by mixing in more intense (but fugitive) pigments or dyes to make them appear more brilliant. The best of them, Cadmiums and Cobalts are somewhat toxic. And so is their fugitive Methyl Violet. In another comment I recently opinionated that Van Gogh was the best choice. I then realized I didn't know what the H... I was talking about, since it was several decades ago since I last painted with Cotman (it gets like that when your hundreds of years old, time flies ;)). Anyway, I purchased the 36 pan White Nights set and was disappointed. I purchased the 24 pan Aquafine set and was like "Ok, hmm" (the lightfastness is not top, more like borderline). And then I purchased the full 45 pan Cotman set and was blown away. They're very good. I think you've said the same before and I must agree. W&N clearly takes the approach that they might just as well compete with themselves (the Professional range), because otherwise someone else will. A stunning value range. (I still think Van Gogh is also good though).

    • @angellibeans
      @angellibeans 7 років тому

      Vermiliontea Really? But... i thought White Nights are artist quality, and a LOT of artists have reviewed it and said that it's better than W&N. I'm confused, since i'm torn between buying White Nights 36 or W&N Cotman 45 as an upgrade for my Sakura Koi.

    • @Vermiliontea
      @Vermiliontea 7 років тому +3

      Both sets are good. I have them both. (Sofar I have painted more with White Nights, but I have replaced 6 of the colors with lightfast paints from other brand).
      White Nights are nicer to paint with. The pans are big and they dissolve easily. They are very close to artist grade in the paint preparation. Basically they are artist grade, but not among the best. And you get 3 genuine Cadmiums and 2 Cobalts. But overall, the Cotman set has better and more modern pigments. You won't get genuine Cadmium or Cobalt though. If you choose the White Nights set, I recommend you to replace the Violet. It's fugitive. There are some questionable yellows and greens, but you might be fine. There are two Naphtol reds, think they're called Ruby and Carmine. These are lightfast when used as reds, strongly. If you mix grey/green/brown shades or do light pinks, use Cadmium, English or any of the Quinacridone purples instead.
      The entire Cotman set is quite lightfast. All colors are ASTM I or II. While the White Night set has a few ASTM III and one IV/V (Violet).
      So the basic difference is that Cotman is Western, modern, hitech - but it is student grade preparation, very good such though, perhaps the best. White Night is almost artist grade preparation, but have a pigment selection that is limited by Russian business economy.
      The pigment strength of the Cotman paints is not quite artist grade, but it is good. This was my greatest surprise. I thought they would have been more extended. My main complaint about Cotman is that the colors are hard to dissolve and pick up. It takes some scrubbing. Otherwise I think they're fine.
      White Night is quite nice to paint with. A pleasant, luxury experience. If you either don't care much about lightfastness, or can consciously make choices when you paint - most of the 36 set is lightfast, I think 12 are perfect, 6 are very good, 8 are troublefree, 5 are okay, 4 are borderline and one is real trouble (Violet) - I recommend the White Night set.
      But I would always recommend Cotman to beginners, because there are no caveats. They're solid. As "upgrade" from Sakura Koi? I don't know. I don't know anything about Sakura Koi. Looking at YT videos, I can see that they are somewhat chalky, muddy. Cotman aren't like that. If it's about the transparent look, or color depth, Cotman will do fine as an upgrade.

    I was looking for beginner watercolours that isn't crappy. Thank you for doing this. I am wondering, with the tubes of watercolour, can you mix your own colours with them and put them in an empty pan or is that something that isn't advisable?

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 років тому +1

      The advantage of pre-mixing colours is you save time if you happen to use that colour a lot. But that's why paint manufacturers make so many colours, secondary such as orange, purples and greens. It is best not to pre-mix so that you can more versatility with the primary colours you've got.

    This was a very informative video! (that I have watched, at least). I have the Cotman 12 set which I enjoy and have been slowly building my collection of artist grade (which I love significantly more as expected). I found a very cheap brand of watercolours being sold at Opus art supply store called Mungyo Professional but have been unable to find reviews on. The website claims that they only contain pure pigment and gum arabic without any additives and that most of them are lightfast. I feel skeptical of the claims due to the low price point. Have you heard of them or tried them? I would really love to hear what you think of them if you can get your hands on them.
