Nothing can beat the White Nights in terms of value for money. I have their 24 color palette. It includes 8 fully transparent colors and most of them are single pigment colors, which is rarely found in sets by other paint brands.
Want to share a secret? On White Nights, cheaper pigments are mixed in cadmium and cobalt, which just determines their low price. This has been checked many times by chemical means on their oil paints: the claimed composition of expensive pigments does not correspond to the actual content.
Coming back to this review is crazy. I bought the 36-set because of your review, and although I've had the Mijello Pure Pigment and WN Cotman sets under my belt I always come back to White Nights. Something about it is just super comfortable to use. Really appreciate your videos!
Hello from Russia! White nights criticized for their tubes. You basically play russian roulette (pun intended) when buying them. Half of the tubes contain 8 or even 6 ml instead of promised 10! And the heads of company made a show with stupid formuls by which they "proved haters wrong" by getting a result of 14 ml in a 10 ml tube. This is ridiculous. There are a lot more bones to pick about white nights and the brand in general which started the fall of it's reputation in Russia. It's fine if these paints is perfect for you, but there are reasons for them to be criticized. No offence. Sorry my grammar, I don't speak English wery well. Have a nice day!
Your reviews are the best, you are always so well informed and your reviews are so thorough. Thank you very very much for all the work you put into them! I am always happy to see a new video of yours pop up in my UA-cam feed :)
I use these a lot and find them to be as bright as any expensive brand. Best advice I can give is to buy a box, use them but when replacing the colours check for the lightfastness as a few of the colours are not good in that respect. Also there are a couple of browns that dry up pretty quick. But by replacing the colours selectively you can get great quality and save a lot of money.
+Yasmine S. Better not spend too much money on watercolour when you're starting out. Just learn to use your current colours. Mixing on paper will be more exciting than in the palette. Reason being the colours will not mix completely on paper so you can still search each colour showing. You can definitely mix different brands of watercolour.
I know this an old video, but I have to say that this a very good set for those just starting out. I purchased the 36 color set and it's so much better than any of the student sets I tried at similar price points. Even if you choose not to purchase the palette case to save money, the paints (at least the set of 36) come in a palette like a package. I used it until my palette case arrived.
Amazing video thank you. I was drawing with this brand when i was young studying at fine art school. The brand was called "Leningrad" back then. Teachers was always mention that the quality is very good for this price.
I bought this set after you made this video and just yesterday I bought their big set to add to my collection. Whenever there is a watercolor I want I first check reviews and your channel is where I go first to look for a review! Thank you for making unbiased, detailed reviews!
I got this set today, I was ready to be underwhelmed but wow was I wrong. The pigments are INTENSE, when I compared it to the cotman water colors.. The results.. Compared to white nights cotman seemed TOO faded to me now
The Stoned Videogame Nerd So, what can you say, as a beginner should I choose the White nights, cotman, or van Gogh? I've watched million reviews, still can't decide...I almost asked my sister to buy me the White nights, since they are cheaper there than cotman etc here (12pcs), but seems lots of ppl complain they are not very transparent. On the other hand cotman are small and hard, plus that white color nobody really uses . Would love to hear your opinion. Thanks
The Stoned Videogame Nerd Wow thank you for such good information!! You helped a lot;) P.s. btw I am from post Soviet, so pretty familiar with workers income unfortunately))
I really admire your work and style. I want to learn your level of restraint when choosing a palette for my pieces. I am a total beginner, and it's a difficult discipline. I am starting with a Van Gogh 20 set, and learning all I can. Thanks for your reviews, I watch them a lot.
The 12-pan White Nights set is my go-to travel set now. Not really a fan of the Cadmium Lemon, might want to swop with another yellow eventually. But I wish to add to your review that the White Nights colours tend to be very creamy and flowy in hot weather, and need to check that they don't leak out or start mixing together in the bag.
Well White nights are generally cheaper but consider the fact that transporting them from Russia to Poland would be cheaper that transporting the W&N from USA. In my country White nights are considered expensive but W&N (which in my country are considered lower quality than White Nights) are twice their price.
I have a weird problem with my set. In one of the blues and most of the browns the colors clump up and don’t cover the white of the paper. Is that normal for these? Or did I get a weird set?
@@ClowdEnvy i think you should take pictures and send it to Nevskaya Palitra(company who produce these paints) for advice. I don’t know about blue, but some colors are tend to expire faster, when clay used in making them, like Ochre made from clay. Try adding clove oil. It is antibacterial too. Honey is also used.
Yes. Will do. picked up Winsor Newton Cotman 12pan box and Khadhi paper sketchbook after seeing your videos . Carried it along with me for my trip to Italy and France. The results were amazing. Thankyou again!
arvind shukla: You should know that these paints have been produced in Russia for over 100 years, so AMIR AMIR could easily have been using them for over 20 years. Maybe you should not be so quick to call someone a liar. Practice kindness.
@@OneTrueWord1988 I'm super sorry if I offended you, I could probably phrase my comment better, what I meant to say was that i was kinda confused about how he bought 3 sets 7 years ago and has been using the brand for 20 years, like did he mean that he bought his first white nights set 7 years ago or did he buy 3 more sets 7 years ago? That's why I thought he was lying, I was just kinda confused but I didn't mean to offend anyone
arvind shukla: That’s very kind of you to write! You didn’t offend me, I just felt like someone should defend AmirAmir, since he could have been using them for that long. People are so often rude in the comments these days, and I dislike seeing it. I am a Mom, and I guess I reacted to you like I would to my own children if they said something like that. You sound like a very nice person, and it was very nice of you to take the time to write. Just try to be aware of other people’s feelings, and show how nice you truly are! 😊👍 God bless you!
Holy CRACK the schminke are bright!! (amazing)!! Omg cant wait to get my set now, more than ever! Its on order from Jacksons, they were running a promotion. Wooo! Thx Teoh! This color chart section blew my mind. Fantastic
can i just say i love your channel i have just discovered it and have already learnt so much. I am new to watercolor and would like to start sketching and using it with that. With the detain you go into and the amount of videos you have made and do make i am sure to get the hang of it. Thank you.
Thanks for another great review. I heard some good opinions about White Nights. I'll definitely buy one of those huge palettes, when I need them; they're very cheap in Poland.
Thank you for the reviews. I quite like these colors. I bought 3 of them (primary) and I love it, they are so vibrant. I will definitely try some more :)
I purchased these today and I must say that for students this is good value. I only have my Holbeins to compare them to and there is simply no comparison, Holbein wins hands down (but much more expensive 😬) I found the White Nights to be almost very saturated, however they became visibly spotty if diluted too much, unlike the ever evenness of Holbeins. But I guess I'm just spoiled by Holbein. The White Nights are still a good value and more than capable for most applications, but I personally wouldn't use them in a commission.
The burnt umber looks more like burnt sienna. Umber in my Schmincke and van Gogh is a more greeny brown. The green also looks a little like Hookers green. The Pthalo blue looks nice and the Carmine looks good too. I like that Carmine and Pthalo blue mix - lovely purple. Thanks for this excellent review. I enjoyed it.
+Chammi Kaiser Thanks. Indeed the Burnt Umber does look like Burnt Sienna. I was able to get much more paint out with this Burnt Umber because it dissolves more easily compared to other Burnt Sienna that I've tried.
I've bought a set for my urban sketching, I love the colors and the box has a nice size. I know you have done another video about the box not being good for mixing colors cause while using if you don't dry the wells water will drip out form the box. Bu that is not a problem for me cause I've always make sure my wells are dry before I leave a site. Anyway I've started using Windsor and Newton and change to Kuretake Gansai Tambi, but after while got Daniel Smith which I love...I wanted a alternative and I think this one is great, not to mention that I've change my sketch book as well for water color paper and it makes a huge difference, my sketches are always kind of wash out cause the type of book I was using which I want to finish by the way. Bottom line is I've seen you use this set when you have done your sketches and they are beautiful...thanks for all your advise and videos is been a fun ride for me when it comes to Urban Sketching!!!
Great review! I saw another review on this set, and they didn't mention how opaque the cadmium colors are. Opaque yellow is a pet peeve of mine, so I really appreciate your astute observation and demonstration of this set. Love your channel!
Good review, thank you. Just to rectify something you said, these are not introductory/student grade watercolor paints. These are artist grade with a lightfast rating and single pigments with honey and Arabic gum. These are comparable with M. Graham and Daniel Smith. If you'd do a comparaison chart, you'd see that many colors are actually more vibrant in White Lights than any other expensive artist grade paints. However, just wanted to clarify that these are not student grades - you may want to modify on your blog.
@@callmedeno I think cadmium colours can dull other pigments when mixed as they are so opaque compared to non cadmium pigments. White Nights sell individual pans so you can choose a selection of custom pigments if you prefer to avoid the cadmium shades. The Sonnet and White Nights that I have are super bright and pigmented but I have no cadmium colours at all.
Hello from the future, its March 2020. And yes, these are pretty nice paints, I definitely would recommend them. Hope you get them or already have them :)
Tasbih Kyani - They are great, get them if you have the chance! I bought the 12 pan set and regretted it right away, gifted them to mom and bought the 24 set instead. They are so vibrant and pretty. I really recommend them, I think they have the best price/quality-ratio of all the watercolor sets Ive tested. And there are quite a few tins in my stash :)
Great review! Have you tried the Corem Sonnet watercolors? They are also made in Russia, 24 full pans, vivid rich colors for US$20 ( not including S&H) on Amazon. Not sure how many are pure single pigments, but many are transparent and flow well. They have become my new BBF while painting, over my WN Cotman and Daniel Smith. The set's downside is it comes in a cardboard box with no mixing surface available.;-( Love your sketches and paintings shown. Thank you!
That's because it's like a beginning set that you are supposed to put into a metal/plastic palette and when you run out of a certain color you can purchase that specific color.
Another great review. This looks like a good set. I have a lemon yellow that I want to replace for a transparent yellow instead since I'm not a big fan of the mixes I get with it.
+Prismatic Thank you for posting that. You've just clarified a question I had. I have the same problem with Cadmium Yellow. I wanted to find a transparent light yellow from this brand. From what I could find, our last option from their chart is 215-Hanza Yellow, which is marked as not so lightfast...
+Milena Brandão I'm using a Winsor and Newton palette and the Lemon Yellow in it is opaque. I'm leaning more for transparency since I don't like most of the mixes I get with opaque watercolors. It appears the Lemon Yellow in the White Nights is transparent.
+Prismatic you're right, i use a lemon yellow in White Nights and it's quite transparent and great in mixes. There are also Ruby, Golden Deep and Indanthrene Blue -- they aren't in the standart set, but i love them for their behavior in mixes.
this palette have now a better useful box ... I like these colors choice because I can mix a lot of colors from the color wheel that I want and have a lot of fun. If you know how to - realistic pictures are possible, or any other art. I think that is a avesome 12 full pan palette for this price in this very good finest artist quality. :)
White Nights have a lot of pigments and they are good value. It seems the pigments are grounded a little coarsely, thus sometimes it looks kinda "dirty", specially in large areas. You can tell better in the color chart.
I'm just starting out with watercolour (my lukas studio set hasn't even arrived yet lol) but I'm thinking of buying a white nights set once I'm more experienced and familiar with the medium! Thanks for the review/demo!! I've been binge-watching reviews, tips, recommendations for the past couple days so this is really good!! 💛 ((I was thinking of splurging on cotman but white nights is actually cheaper here in Sweden and according to a lot of people seem to be better!))
This was very on point Teoh I was waiting for you to review these(: thank you for sharing! If you ever get a chance to play with that set of 24 I think you would love their English red, its a very unique reddish brown and it blends beautifully with their pthalo blue and makes a very interesting greys! Would love to know what you think about it and if you have anything similar to it in your collection (: Also waiting for your review on your new Daniel smith paints! Would love to hear your opinion on all the tubes you have😜 Thanks again and have a good week (-:
+yarden2611 Hi, I use Phthalo Blue with Transparent Pyrrole Orange for grays. I love the red in Transparent Pyrrole Orange.! I'll review those new Daniel Smith tubes soon.
I really find the color comparison videos very helpful. I am wondering if you have any insight into the pure pigment line by Mijello Gold compared to their Mijello Gold regular watercolors. Thank you for sharing. I make sure to watch the commercials for you :-)
+Terri Kash They are very high quality paints. Sometimes you can find them at great discounts. The 9 tube 7ml set under usd $30 is a good set to try. Here is my review www.parkablogs.com/picture/review-mission-gold-watercolors-9-tube-set
thank you very much for the information. I love your videos. and one advise from me - you can get out the pens set from the box and wash the box under runing water. this is the easiest way to clean every part of it. :)
Thank you Teoh, im enjoying your videos, it seems that theres no paint that hasnt got. at least one flaw but the white night set seems very good, so thats the one ill probably buy ,
Hi Teoh, thank you for sharing this video and all the other interesting videos that I continuously watch them when I need a reminder for reviews. I would like to ask your opinion about mixing different watercolours brands either on your pallet or in the same illustration. I've been using the professional watercolours as long as I remember since collage, and lately I buy individual colours from different brands, for example I totally love the green PG 8 of the White Nights but more the yellow tones of Rembrandt. Do you think this might effect the painting on the long term?. I mean on the colour value. xx
Money-wise and lightfastness-wise, White Knights aren’t as good as some other professional paints though...Also, I think that they tend to be a bit more opaque.
Hi! thank you for sharing an in depth review for this! I would like to know if you prefer the White Nights over the W&N Cotman Sketchers box of 12 because I heard the Cotmans are better than White Nights?? Thank you in advance :)
@@MyCrimsonMischief yes, I do know that cotmans are student grade, some people told that cotmans are better, so I was confused! Thank you so much for the reply! :)
Hi, did any of you find a few of the White Nights a bit sticky when you unwrapped it? It's strange to me. Plus their glue to hold their paper wrapper seemed like flaky light color toffee particles. Violet also looks super metallic.
I have a weird problem with my set. In one of the blues and most of the browns the colors clump up and don’t cover the white of the paper. Is that normal for these? Or is mine different?
Katherine Sullivan actually, nope, the carmine is PR 170:1 and madder lake red light is PR 187. I've got the little wrappers from the pans with the pigment info right in front of me. Random though, but Ruby in the 36 set is PR 170
I’m deciding whether to buy their full pans open stock. How long do you think the pans will last? The colors I’m looking for are their scarlet and ultramarine.
Great review! I have been wanting some of them. I got the Payne's grey to try it out and think it's really nice. I have it in my Schmincke Akademie set. Talking of which, do you have an opinion on the difference between Akademie and the more expensive Schmincke watercolours? I love my Akademie set :)
+Beret Nice I've not used the Akademie set before so I can't say much. Schmincke artist grade is quite good. If you're happy with the Akademie, keep using them. When you run out of paints, maybe you can replace with some artist quality to try and compare.
Thank you so much for doing these informative videos. I just bought a set of 12 ½ Winsor & Newton Cotman and I think I regret it as I can get 1 whole St. Peterburg's pane for about 40 cent more than what 1 half pane Winsor & Newton Cotman cost. I guess it is better for mixing to get pure pigmented colours? And should I get a white colour? (Still in progress in watching all your videos, so I don't know if those questions have be answered)
There's no need to get white colour for watercolours. To get lighter colours, you add more water. Having said that, I do have a tube of white gouache just for putting highlights in the scene that I have accidentally covered
have you ever tried the daler rowney aquafine travel set? i love the box and it's very cheap. And what about the sennelier 8 half pans metal box? in Italy it's lower than 30 us dollars. (daler rowney is about 12 dollars)
I find it's difficult to dissolve the paints in the Daler Rowney Aquafine 12-pan set. Sennelier should be better and worth the money even if it cost more.
Well I've bought an empty box and 14 half pans from Schmincke recently, and I realized the difference with cotman, that I used as student grade. In the end you got what you pay.. I think the best choice is the set from Prima, but they are more expensive in Italy right now
What were you waiting for? Cadmium is always opaque in all brands. It's a cadmium! Very expensive pigment and it is opaque. Anyway, this set is not so good although the neutral black is incomparable there because solo it looks deep. You can tried their colors from the last 5 years. They are great. Quinacrdones, cobalts, aureolin, Venetian red. It's perfect. Really love it for its price.
Hi Teoh! I actually bought this a few years ago because of your review :)) i was wondering if you knew if the set is nontoxic as well? I am not sure if i kept the box but I am trying to work with majority nontoxic art supplies so just wanted to check! Thank you for all you do!
I know it's been awhile since this vid was done, but does anyone know if Yarka/St P/White Nights makes their own empty full pans? All other full pans I've seen are too big to fit in the White Nights Palette (that's made specifically for their own pans). i have other tube colors I want to put in the WN palette, but nothing to use for pans.
I live in eastern europe and they are dirt cheap here -full pan is about 1.80 euro and 3 euro for a tube . They are definitely the best for the price/quality balance. Only downside I think is that they are probably not as lightfast as more expensive brands and the cadmium colours are not great
Hi, it's been a while since you posted this but thank you very much for the review! May I ask if these feel chalky when you touch them after they've dried? Also, between these and the Talens Van Gogh Pocket Box (the 12 colors in plastic case), which would you recommend? The White Nights are about US$9 more expensive than the Van Gogh where I can get them. Thank you for any advice you can give!
+Téa P. White Nights is not chalky when dry. Actually works like other brands of watercolor. Van Gogh is not as strongly pigmented compared to White Nights as such you are going to use up the paints much faster. Also note that White Nights pans, at least for this box, is double the size of Van Gogh half pans. So you get more paint even if it is slightly more expensive. But worth it.
Thank you for taking the time to reply; I really appreciate it! Good to know that the White Nights aren't chalky when dry. I read a couple of reviews where some people were experiencing either grainy or chalky surface after they dry so I was a bit worried about that.
Never worked with water colours before and I hoped this video would help me decide what brand to buy. But I still can't make up my mind whether I should by White Nights or Sennelier La Petite Aquarelle (similar price in my country).... Anyone any advice? :)
Also I'm wondering abot the weight of paint in pans. Nevskaya Palitra has 2,5 ml, what about others even half pans? These are like dried pressed chopped sausages, maybe it contains more paints even in half pans?
hey u should check out the uni a-gel mechanical pencil...i think its called.... a gel...its a shaker pencil..very comfortable and comes in nice colors..i know you use pens a lot but i think you would interview it well.
Thank you so much for the video! It help me so much especially the color swatch. I want to buy a new watercolor set and I am more interested in pastel colored rather than vibrant one. Aside from Qor and St. Petersburg, do you have any other reccomendation?
Hi Teoh, thank you for this review! I have a question. Where did you get the pigment numbers? This would be interesting for me and the art shop I got the colors from does only tell me if it is a onepigment colour or not. I don´t realy understand why your mixing chart is less intense then that fron Schmincke or the other brands. I find, that I can get very bright colours and have to take care that I´m not getting to dark with them.
+Petka Anita Bielert Pigment numbers are available on their website www.stpetersburgwatercolours.com/colours.html Maybe I did not use enough paint for the chart. In actual usage, colours are indeed very intense.
Teoh if you find time can you explain to me what watercolors has toxic components in them pigments and what don't from white nights i have that brand in my country they are at a high price but i will rather buy them and learn to paint with them then to try my luck with vermilions and lead colors etc. What can you tell me from your experiance and overall about watercolor toxicity in paints and what should i look for when i buy colors? ty upfront for your time!
Some paints are supposed to be toxic, such as those with cadmium. But the general rule is not to ingest the paint and you should be fine. This applies to non-toxic paint too.
@@teohyc Ty so much for spending a time to explain to me Teoh i am sorry to take your time and i appritiate it beyond words! So even if they have toxic components in them when you use them and when they dry they can't harm you only if you ingest it???I want to start to paint i really like art it makes me complete as a person and i want to spend few hours a day painting but when i read about pigments etc. i was a skeptic because i really don't know anything about them personally.Ty so much Teoh i watched at least 10 videos of you painting you are amazing artist and an wonderful person and teacher.I wish you nothing but the best !!! @@predragdjokic3761 cadmium and cobalt ARE still dangerous, and negatively impact the environment, you need to be careful how you dispose of your wash water. Do NOT dump it outside, and preferably you take anything that has cadmium or cobalt in it to a hazardous material disposal center. I wipe my brush off on paper towels before swishing it in water, and put the paper towels inside a non-degradable water bottle I find in my parents-in-law's garbage, and screw the lid on. @@annedavis3340 I took student grade Marie's watercolor 12 tubes set they dont have cobalt or cadmium in them. And when i practice and practice i will then buy White Nights and i will check every single pigment and substances because first and foremost i care about myself and my health so that's why i wanna know with what paints i am painting because i love art but i was afraid for me in first place how it will affect my health if it doesn't affect me as human it doesn't have components that are heavy toxic only little toxic then it's fine. And ofc i use peper tower always before i wash in dirty water to take all the extra pigment i can then i rinse it then again on paper tower that is the best way for sure.I will in future make my palate colors only from the colors that have a low toxicity lvl and high lighfastenst so i can save for years my work. But i will for sure run around all the colors that have high toxicity in them no matter how those colors look or anything idk i will make it work with all low toxicity colors.
hi im wondering if this or the prima watercolor set wld be better for a beginner who wants to paint on the go/travel? i rlly need a compact pallet, so im a little unsure abt the size on this. Which would u recommend? thank you very much, and i love ur reviews!
+Hajer Nasir Either is fine. If you are in USA, then I recommend Prima Marketing because the box is nicer and takes standard half pan. If elsewhere, White Nights may be cheaper on ebay with shipping included.
Teoh Yi Chie are the two brands comparable even? Will there be a big difference in quality if I chose the prima over the white nights (since it's professional grade)? thanks again!
White Nights has more opaque colours. Prima is more transparent so that could be easier to work with. It really depends on where you live to get the best deal. Another good option is to buy an empty metal box with empty pans and get the 9-tube set Mission Gold (each tube is 7ml).
+c h y o n e x White Nights in my opinion has better quality paints than Cotman. You don't need so many colours. 12-24 is sufficient. You can learn to mix your own colours.
Teoh Yi Chie I see, thank you for your fast respond. Would you reccomend any other brands? By the way, i have another question, why is this better paints than cotman if in the color comparison it seems like cotman's are more vibrant? sorry if this comes out rude or anything i don't know much about pigmentation though
Just get some good artist quality paints wherever it is easiest for you to do so. When you run out of paint in the future, they will be easier to replace. If you have a limited budget, you can get the White Nights box set. I actually feel that White Nights is also very vibrant, just that some of their colours are more opaque so they don't mix well, and it's easier to get muddy mixtures. Cotman has more transparent colours. If you have the budget, try the 9-tube set Mission Gold Watercolor set that you can find on Amazon. Or the 6 tube introductory set from Daniel Smith.
Thanks for this review. I find I need to watch them more than once to understand pigments and opaque vs transparency, so thank you! I am curious about these palettes and WN - are the paints that come with them from tubes or are they cakes?
Teoh, great review! Can you recommend a good non-fountain pen to use that is waterproof? I tried some of my uniball pens, but some of them still smudge when I layer with watercolor.
+Marisa Hernandez I was actually about to recommend some Uniball pens. Not all are waterproof so you have to get pens that specifically say that they are waterproof. The ones I like are Uniball Eye, Air, Gelstick, Gel Impact. Here are more reviews www.parkablogs.com/tags/uniball
Thanks Teoh. Uniball Air and Vision Elite are some of my favorite pens to draw with-- perhaps I'm not letting the ink dry long enough before I add watercolor.

I got this set today, I was ready to be underwhelmed but wow was I wrong. The pigments are INTENSE, when I compared it to the cotman water colors.. The results.. Compared to white nights cotman seemed TOO faded to me now
White Nights is very worth the money! lol
Colors are intense and we get FULL PANS at lesser price. I love White Nights watercolors!
Good to know! I was torn between the two.
You helped a lot;)
P.s. btw I am from post Soviet, so pretty familiar with workers income unfortunately))
+Edric Hsu I always make sure they dry properly before closing the box. They are semi moist looking most of the time.
These are my favourites and the bonus for me is, they tend to be cheaper than W&N here in Poland.
the same is true about me living in Iran. "made in USA" things' price is CRAZY.
@@Lotus_Stateless ty for the advise ☺️☕️ I appreciate it. I will see if clove oil does anything for them
EXCELLENT review. It answered several questions I have about these paints. Very, VERY helpful.
hello from st.petersburg!
Yes. Will do. picked up Winsor Newton Cotman 12pan box and Khadhi paper sketchbook after seeing your videos . Carried it along with me for my trip to Italy and France. The results were amazing. Thankyou again!
+shyamala hariharan oh wow. Share your sketches online. I would love to see them 😁
I have been using this brand for almost 20 years. About 7 years ago I purchased 3 sets.... I'm sure the price has gone up since then
No offence but i think you are obviously lying
arvind shukla: You should know that these paints have been produced in Russia for over 100 years, so AMIR AMIR could easily have been using them for over 20 years.
I’ve been using them at least that long as well. They were mostly known as Yarka back then, but same company
Great watercolours. I have all set from White Nights. Really love it!
+Kiana Okeana All set like all the sets?!
+Teoh Yi Chie I mean, that I have almost all of colors from series of White Nights. P.S. Your works are great :)
Brilliant Teoh! I am so inspired and my interest in sketching have increased ever since I started following your work. Way to go!
+shyamala hariharan Thanks. That's great to hear. Post your stuff online 😁
Holy CRACK the schminke are bright!! (amazing)!! Omg cant wait to get my set now, more than ever! Its on order from Jacksons, they were running a promotion. Wooo! Thx Teoh! This color chart section blew my mind. Fantastic
Thank you Teoh, this was a very thorough review and comparison 😊
can i just say i love your channel i have just discovered it and have already learnt so much. I am new to watercolor and would like to start sketching and using it with that. With the detain you go into and the amount of videos you have made and do make i am sure to get the hang of it. Thank you.
Thanks :-)
Thanks for another great review. I heard some good opinions about White Nights. I'll definitely buy one of those huge palettes, when I need them; they're very cheap in Poland.
+Magdalena Lewczuk Thanks :-)
Hi Teo! This set seems very well. it Is always a pleasure to see your videos and your mixes give me new ideas!
Thank you for the reviews. I quite like these colors. I bought 3 of them (primary) and I love it, they are so vibrant. I will definitely try some more :)
I purchased these today and I must say that for students this is good value. I only have my Holbeins to compare them to and there is simply no comparison, Holbein wins hands down (but much more expensive 😬)
I found the White Nights to be almost very saturated, however they became visibly spotty if diluted too much, unlike the ever evenness of Holbeins.
But I guess I'm just spoiled by Holbein. The White Nights are still a good value and more than capable for most applications, but I personally wouldn't use them in a commission.
Great review, thank you for the time you put into these reviews.
+Gail Gassen Thanks 🙌
another fantastic review. your reviews are full of information as are all your videos. I appreciate your lessons so much.
Thanks 😄
Loved seeing your art!
Good review. Thanks for showing the warm and cool colour wheels
Thanks for sharing your experience 😁
They look much duller on his color chart though, why might that be?
@@callmedeno I think cadmium colours can dull other pigments when mixed as they are so opaque compared to non cadmium pigments. White Nights sell individual pans so you can choose a selection of custom pigments if you prefer to avoid the cadmium shades. The Sonnet and White Nights that I have are super bright and pigmented but I have no cadmium colours at all.
Threw mine out
Richard Keeton - would have been more thoughtful to donate them to a charity shop.
@@richardkeeton9926 why?
I watch this great review in 2019! So where I am actually 😆 who's with me? It make me wish to purchase this white nights watercolor set
Nailus Salsabila I love White Nights, and I think you will also! Happy New Year!
Hello from the future, its March 2020. And yes, these are pretty nice paints, I definitely would recommend them. Hope you get them or already have them :)
Jane Miettinen hello! March 2020 too! I reslly wanna purchase these lol
Thanks so much! What a thorough review and comparison
The set's downside is it comes in a cardboard box with no mixing surface available.;-(
Love your sketches and paintings shown. Thank you!
I've not tried Corem Sonnet before. Perhaps in the future.
Thanks for your comments :-)
That's because it's like a beginning set that you are supposed to put into a metal/plastic palette and when you run out of a certain color you can purchase that specific color.
I had this set for free. So I wanted to see a review on them and wow.
You are amazing! Your reviews are so helpful. Thank you for sharing. :)
There are also Ruby, Golden Deep and Indanthrene Blue -- they aren't in the standart set, but i love them for their behavior in mixes.
you have a wide collection of watercolor pan! thanks for all the review it's really helpful!!
this palette have now a better useful box ...
I like these colors choice because I can mix a lot of colors from the color wheel that I want and have a lot of fun.
If you know how to - realistic pictures are possible, or any other art. I think that is a avesome 12 full pan palette for this price in this very good finest artist quality. :)
Nice! I hope I can like it a million times!
The mixing tips are very helpful! Thank you! :)
Have you done a review on the Polish equivalent that is now out everywhere Szmal?
White-Nights sind sehr gute Farben zu sehr fairem Preis. Male sehr gern mit Ihnen.
Interessante Skizzen....
((I was thinking of splurging on cotman but white nights is actually cheaper here in Sweden and according to a lot of people seem to be better!))
This was very on point Teoh I was waiting for you to review these(: thank you for sharing!
If you ever get a chance to play with that set of 24 I think you would love their English red, its a very unique reddish brown and it blends beautifully with their pthalo blue and makes a very interesting greys!
Would love to know what you think about it and if you have anything similar to it in your collection (:
Also waiting for your review on your new Daniel smith paints! Would love to hear your opinion on all the tubes you have😜
Thanks again and have a good week (-:
+yarden2611 Hi, I use Phthalo Blue with Transparent Pyrrole Orange for grays. I love the red in Transparent Pyrrole Orange.!
I'll review those new Daniel Smith tubes soon.
better white nights 12 color pan or winsor and cotman 12 half pan?? please answer thankyouu

Incredible ideas 💡
Hey Teoh. What brand/product of watercolor is at the top of your list... The most pleasurable to work with?
brilliant video. lots of info and practical examples. thanks
+niko sadie Thanks 🙌
thank you very much for the information. I love your videos. and one advise from me - you can get out the pens set from the box and wash the box under runing water. this is the easiest way to clean every part of it. :)
Thanks :-)
Hi, nice test. How are you sketching? With a pen or fine liner? It looks very „fluent“. Thanks!
Thank you Teoh, im enjoying your videos, it seems that theres no paint that hasnt got. at least one flaw but the white night set seems very good, so thats the one ill probably buy ,
+Michelle Regis You just have to understand the characteristics of each paint to use them well.
I mean on the colour value. xx
These are professional paints, so you shouldn’t compare them to cotman watercolors!! But thank you for the video review
Anusha Ivaturi White nights are universally better than Cotman, cotman are student grade paint while white nights are artist grade.
@@MyCrimsonMischief yes, I do know that cotmans are student grade, some people told that cotmans are better, so I was confused! Thank you so much for the reply! :)
Holbein and M graham are my current favorites but the schmicke looks good too from your color chart.
Do you like them?
Schmincke is good. But here in Singapore more expensive than other brands
Hi, did any of you find a few of the White Nights a bit sticky when you unwrapped it? It's strange to me. Plus their glue to hold their paper wrapper seemed like flaky light color toffee particles. Violet also looks super metallic.
White Nights is sticky. After you use them, the paints in the pans will still be sticky.
I have a weird problem with my set. In one of the blues and most of the browns the colors clump up and don’t cover the white of the paper. Is that normal for these? Or is mine different?
If paint doesn’t cover the paper properly it could be the paper problem. Is it just on one page?
After telling me it could be the paper I tried it on my 100% cotton paper and it dispersed properly. Ty 😊☕️👍 that totally fixed the problem.
hi hun. Carmine is PR 187, PR 170:1 is their Madder Lake Red Light :)
Those are quality paints. But how long they will last, regardless of brand, will still depend on how often. you paint.
Hello. So how would you compare this one to the vangogh watercolors? I deciding between the twos
White Nights is better. You get more paint and the quality is better. Van Gogh paints gets used up really fast for me.
Good idea!
Is it better than cotman watercolor.
I watched a review where the artist said they were the .most saturated colours she had used compared with any other watercolours ?
have you ever tried the daler rowney aquafine travel set? i love the box and it's very cheap.
I think the best choice is the set from Prima, but they are more expensive in Italy right now
Have you ever tried lukas? If so do you think they're comparable to van gogh or white nights?
Unless there is metal, usually the paint is not toxic. Eg Cadmium, manganese
Thankyou for the review! I can't choose between white night 12 pans set and van Gogh 12 tubes set, which one do you think is better?
White Nights is higher quality
between this and Mijello mission gold which one would u recommend ?
I prefer Mission Gold. Mainly because here in Singapore Mission Gold refills come in pans and not tubes. Not that economical in the long run.
Not sure if they sell empty plastic pans. I’ve not seen those before
Сan you review and compare all Nevskaya Palitra ( White Nights, Sonet...)watercolor sets?
Perhaps in the future. I still have a lot of watercolour paints I've yet to finish using.
White Nights has bigger pans and will last longer
Also I'm wondering abot the weight of paint in pans. Nevskaya Palitra has 2,5 ml, what about others even half pans? These are like dried pressed chopped sausages, maybe it contains more paints even in half pans?
Half pans capacity is usually 2ml.
So really not that much less. Maybe due to percentage and quality of pigments it costs what it costs.
hey u should check out the uni a-gel mechanical pencil...i think its called.... a gel...its a shaker pencil..very comfortable and comes in nice colors..i know you use pens a lot but i think you would interview it well.
+bubanner Thanks for your suggestions. Maybr I will check it out.
Thanks for the review! Any plans to try out their metallic watercolors?
+Orsi Dirda (Dragorsi) Not at the moment. If you're into metallic colours, check out Gansai Tambi and Kremer Pigments.
I need a good copper one, so I'm looking into them right now. Thanks for the suggestions!
Nice demo. How do you know if which is warm or cool colour to begin with?
Warm and cool is a relative comparison. You see if the colours are closer or further away from red or blue on the colour wheel.
It is quite impossible to get "White Nights" in singapore (unless online purchases)
Straits Art sells them. www.straitsartco.com.sg/
Di you that Holbein artist watercolor set of 12 x 5ml is worth getting instead of this? Because in my country Holbein is only 10$ more expensive.
Holbein is a good brand. I think it might be more value for money. But with White Nights, you have the palette box.
Thank you so much for the video! It help me so much especially the color swatch.
I want to buy a new watercolor set and I am more interested in pastel colored rather than vibrant one. Aside from Qor and St. Petersburg, do you have any other reccomendation?
You can check out Prima Marketing watercolor sets
Prima? Sure
+Petka Anita Bielert Pigment numbers are available on their website www.stpetersburgwatercolours.com/colours.html
Maybe I did not use enough paint for the chart. In actual usage, colours are indeed very intense.
Great! Thank you very much!
I just bought them, and this really helped! Also what is the name of the sketchbook?
It's a customised sketchbook with Arches watercolor paper
It drives me nuts how cavalier everyone is with those pigments!!
@@predragdjokic3761 I'm glad you're starting out with good habits. Much better than discovering later that something you treasure isn't lightfast!
My White night watercolor i buy has cadmium red light instead of yellow orcher. It is conterfeit ?
Sometimes manufacturers would change colours in their sets. It's not surprising.
Thanks !
hi im wondering if this or the prima watercolor set wld be better for a beginner who wants to paint on the go/travel? i rlly need a compact pallet, so im a little unsure abt the size on this.
Hello Teoh, I'm stuck in choosing between white nights, holbein and van gogh may i know which one you prefer?
White Nights and Holbein are better
thank you!
Would you reccomend the 36 set of White Nights or Cotman 45 half pans, as an upgrade for Sakura Koi? Please answer! ^^
+c h y o n e x White Nights in my opinion has better quality paints than Cotman. You don't need so many colours. 12-24 is sufficient. You can learn to mix your own colours.
Teoh Yi Chie
I see, thank you for your fast respond. Would you reccomend any other brands?
By the way, i have another question, why is this better paints than cotman if in the color comparison it seems like cotman's are more vibrant? sorry if this comes out rude or anything
i don't know much about pigmentation though
Just get some good artist quality paints wherever it is easiest for you to do so. When you run out of paint in the future, they will be easier to replace.
If you have a limited budget, you can get the White Nights box set. I actually feel that White Nights is also very vibrant, just that some of their colours are more opaque so they don't mix well, and it's easier to get muddy mixtures. Cotman has more transparent colours.
If you have the budget, try the 9-tube set Mission Gold Watercolor set that you can find on Amazon. Or the 6 tube introductory set from Daniel Smith.
Where do I find standard Pigment color numbers. Do all manufacturers make Pigment numbers available?
Most manufacturers should have the pigment info online. Just do a search for their watercolour chart.
@@teohyc thank you.
Thanks for this review. I find I need to watch them more than once to understand pigments and opaque vs transparency, so thank you! I am curious about these palettes and WN - are the paints that come with them from tubes or are they cakes?
They are cakes, aka pans.
+Teoh Yi Chie Oh ok, thank you.
Marisa Hernandez The Uniball Gel Impact and Gelstick are the fastest drying pens.
@@MaidenBklyn I'd recommend the Sakura microns
