LET IT BE SAID that "Daniel Smith" missed the boat when they didn't put together a "Teoh Yi Chie" watercolor set. Hmph

Excellent video. Pigment, and NOT names, is the most important factor, which I've learned after burning holes in my pocket. Thank luck I never bought any Cadmiums. Glad you emphasised pigments and opacity for people beginning to build their palettes. Wish I'd seen this video a year or so ago, it would've saved me a fair few quid 😄👍

Personally, I think the best thing for people to start on are the basic student sets by Schmincke , Lukas, or Van Gogh. They are of good quality and well balanced, containing warm and cool primaries, as well as useful secondaries and earth tones, while containing no real cadmiums, which, as you mentioned, can be a bit difficult. Also, these sets are quite affordable. I think another good starter set is Cotman, but since this set unfortunately includes a lemon yellow that is quite weak and opaque, I would suggest supplementing it with a cool yellow by a different brand.

It took me a couple of “wrong” sets to finally put together a palette almost identical with the color selection of that Qor set, plus a few special colors I can’t mix myself. I wish I could see a video like this when I just started. This could’ve saved me a lot of money, haha. I remember having a hard time finding a well-balanced introductory set back then. But now it seems that all these major brands have their own beginner friendly color mixing sets. Or maybe I just knew too little back then to even notice these introductory sets existed? :-)

I used to be addicted to Daniel smith and old Holland, but after using QOR it’s almost the only brand I use now. So rich in pigment and the aquazol makes the paint flow so easily.

Aside from the warm/cool combo and the transparent vs. opaque, I also found vibrancy or hue strength must be considered to have a balance palette. Some colors, like the phthalocyanines and quinacridones will overwhelm other colors and I find using them not only needs deft handling but also mixing color choices to match their strength. This took a bit of sleuthing, especially where permanency & lightfastness are priority.

I believe Da Vinci has several “starter” sets depending upon the subjects you want to paint! They even have sets of “trio” colors that many different artists have done extensive works with the trio paints! Da Vinci has premade palettes for subjects, like Denise Soden’s wildlife palette! You might consider showing these paints, I believe that Da Vinci paints are professional grade and don’t cost an arm and a leg like the Dan Smith paints or Schmincke paints. I know that availability is a consideration, but with the Internet you can get most any product anywhere in the world! Have you considered doing a video series on the DaVinci sets? Just an idea, thank you for sharing your opinions on these sets. Have a nice day.

I mix ivory black with DS deep scarlet to get skin tone shadows. (Learned from the artist Nick Runge). Since I started doing that I like to include ivory black in my sets. I have the small Schmincke 12 set and I ended up adding deep scarlet, phthalo turquoise, diox purple, payne's grey, quin coral, and WN burnt sienna to fill it out. I would have removed some of the schmincke pans like the cadmium colors but I'm a completionist, I hate breaking up sets :p

I’m now aware of the limitations of the M Graham set you showed, so thanks so much for that! With that being said, I got that set as a gift and they’re my only MG watercolors and they work sooooo buttery and nice so y’all can pry them from my cold dead hands lmao. Great video Teoh, I always love a color theory refresher!

Great video! This is essential viewing for a new watercolorist. It's taken years for many of us to learn warm/cool and opacity/transparency. I'm comfortable breaking rules now, like using black mixed with any of the yellows to get greens for landscape painting or white washes for fog and mist. But, a set like Qor's will give anyone, new or experienced, many successful paintings/sketches.

This is a great and informative video, thank you! I've been looking into buying some single tubes of paint to make a new set, but I had no idea where to start in terms of warm/cool colours or sets of colours, so this is incredibly useful!

I just wanted to mention I found a nice starter set for Sennelier.. it's the Billie Showell six tube set. It's a split primary and it's a great deal.. 10ml tubes for half the price of singles.

Teoh! I just ordered a haul from Blick- I'm upgrading from a full color wheel +. Earths and greys Van Gogh 24 half pan pallet to a limited palette using DS, W&N, and Qor colors I picked out from scouring over your videos, Dr. Oto Kano's and InliquidColor's vids too. Thanks for all the content- I'm soooo excited to "upgrade" and get better at color mixing!

Great book recommendation Teoh! You are a great sensei. Always thorough, honest and unbiased. I do disagree with you on the Alvaro set, it does have two yellows - Hansa Yellow Deep and Yellow Ochre which mix with the reds and yellows to wide muted palette. I usually recommend this set to new watercolorists.
