This man is a treasure. Many years ago, he was sitting next to us in a restaurant when we recognized him and we did not want to disturb him. After a little while, I motioned to my camera to ask his permission for a picture. Not only did he agree, he posed for us with his wife Kelly Preston and their new baby. I told him we loved his movies and he thanked us, all the while maintaining eye contact. He recognized we felt special to meet him and he made sure we enjoyed it.

Given his stature as an artist, it’s refreshing how transparent and humble he seems. John seems almost shy like he really doesn’t even want to talk about himself too much. In the land of egomaniacs that is so rare and I think it does come from himHaving parents who were older who he had to be patient with and nurturing with and also his association with old Hollywood stars who younger stars probably dismissed. John was a pretty smart guy to tap into their knowledge base.

This interview is 20 years old. Travolta has a huge body of work since then. A favorite is Gotti. As a True Crime junkie, I've read and watched much about Gotti and Travolta nailed it right down to his last minutes on his deathbed. The movie was criticized a lot because it wasn't some other movie like Godfather, or Goodfellas, or Casino (which was nothing like the true story in the book). But even then, they said Travolta was excellent. But the movie really was good, very good.

same.. they used to nearly all be on youtube about like.. 10-15 years ago (the early/dark ages of UA-cam), but they started getting removed, and I think that the channel (Bravo?) was very strict about keeping them down. Maybe since James Lipton has passed they'll be a little more relaxed and hopefully allow people to upload them again!

@@Nelekets I've noticed that in the last few days, as I've been binge watching these on UA-cam, they are showing the clips when James turns your attention to the screen behind him.
They used to cut that part out.

@@Nelekets Yeah, I found that as well. It has a dozen or so but stated that others are not available.
But I hope they will keep adding them on. James Lipton had such a way of relaxing the guests and we really got a sense of what they are really like and how they grew up and got into entertainment etc.
Things that you never learned on regular late night talk shows or interviews.

Watch the documentary, Mr. Saturday Night. About Robert Stigwood. A lot of great stuff about the making of Saturday Night Fever. And it was John who felt that he deserved an Academy Award nomination for SNF, and wanted one. And made sure he got one. It was his doing.

Oh my, that was one of the best master classes I have ever seen. It's easy to forget how deeply embedded Travolta is in our collective pop culture. I had no idea he was such an actor's actor. Which is of course why he is so great, cos we think he's doing nothing but be JT. So generous.

A wonderful human being, a remarkable actor, 100% unique, authentic, and unsurpassed in star quality. You can clearly see John Travolta was deeply loved by his parents growing up. They instilled in him a priceless gift that, if you're lucky enough to receive it from day one, will last you a lifetime - Self esteem.
That gift has helped protect him through the harsh rejections and unrelenting scrutiny of an actor's life. And no doubt it has kept him afloat through the many personal tragedies he has suffered over the years - many more than one person should.
God bless you John, and thank you for all you have given the world through your fantastic work and your inspiring personality. This interview from 2003 is a real gem, but watching it knowing he was to lose his wife and son, is so very sad.

My memory is imperfect, but Travolta may have saved some lives by discovering a flaw in a type of plane. He was in a jet of his--I don't recall the exact plane. His wife and son were with him. There was some failure of the plane that put them all at risk. He was upset that his wife and son were with him and he might crash. He made it to a landing. He alerted the owners of this jet as to the flaw and it was fixed. It was in a biographical booklet on him years back. It's a little chilling.
