Episode 74 - On this episode, let's read PSM issue #4 from December of 1997. PSM was the first gaming magazine to which I subscribed, and this was the first issue that I received in the mail. This issue includes a Christmas buyers guide, and also includes previews and reviews of A-list titles including Tomb Raider II, Crash Bandicoot II, and Final Fantasy Tactics.

Show notes:
- This episode was produced in 4K!
- Something about the 24 fps frame rate used by the magazine camera did not get along will with the rest of the process. That's why the footage has an odd look. Will try to get it fixed for next time.
- I started recording the gameplay footage for this video last year, because I had initially planned on recording and releasing the video in December of 2022, but obviously that didn't happen.

For anyone who sees this, I just wanted to say thank you for sticking with the show. As I said in this video, after 10 years of doing Classic Gaming Quarterly videos, I just needed to step away for a while. Whether it’s launch videos or magazine read-throughs, there is no content on this channel that isn’t a ton of work to make. Focussing on my other channel with its more casual style ha helped me to reset myself a bit, and I’m looking forward to getting back to work on this show. In the mean time, here’s a link to the “Weekend Rental” playlist on the CGQ+ channel:

It's a marathon, not a sprint. I rather have 5-6 videos a year rather than 0 🥰
❤ that new intro from way back 😅
it's all good, dude. your content is legendary and very rewatchable. happy holidays to you and your family. -JCVD
Thanks for all you do!! Merry Christmas
No worries, Chris! As always, great work!
I had subscriptions to PSM and GamePro when I was a kid, and I read through those magazines cover to cover and took them with me to school every day. 100% responsible for me having a higher reading level and vocabulary. Will never forget those times.
I can relate to that brother 👍 missed those days man. Digital is not where it's at smh. Reading Gameinformer on thr internet is not the same. Die Hard Game Fan was another great Mag! If u had a subscription for any gaming magazine back then, you were doing big things. You were the big kid on the block. I never subscribed to any magazine when I was younger, only when I got my first job then I subscribed to Game Informer when I was around 18 going into my early 20's. Good times man. We had so many different great mags out there. Gamepro, EGM, Gamefan, tips an tricks, and so much more.
Yep. EGM was my favorite magazine and I used to treasure each issue. They don’t do magazines like that anymore. Gamepro and Nintendo Power were also great. Gamepro and EGM would sometimes have issues that were hundred of pages. They were thick.
I'm right there with you. I had a sub to Nintendo Power when they converted from the free newsletter, then later I would first buy EGM at the gas station that was a few blocks from my house then later I would subscribe. I would do the same, take those mags to school and read them dozens of times cover to cover. In fact when EGM was discontinued I had stacked up so many years of free subs I remember they converted me over to MAXIM magizine. LOL
@outerspaceman7534 ah man! I used to love those thick ones! Do u know how many times I would read those magazines, over and over? Look at pictures after pictures and read about how the games will be? Man, those were great times man. The only video game magazine that's still around now is gameinformer. Gameinformer was a decent magazine but now, it'd kind of pointless to even read them, especially when u have youtubers spilling the beans, showing videos and talking about games. Not to mention we have the internet now, easy access. The internet ruined everything. Yeah, the internet made magazines and strategy guides obsolete
@outerspaceman7534 egm and gamepro use to go back and forth with back in the days lol. The only magazine I may read now is probably retro magazines. I would love to buy all the old magazines but I know people probably selling them for an arm and a leg.
I graduated high school in the spring of ‘97, got my first full-time job, and bought a PlayStation that summer. Tomb Raider II was the second game I bought, after Final Fantasy VII, so this time period is super nostalgic for me! Thanks! Loved watching this!
That commercial is gold. I have Volume 2-1 of Playstation Underground and it contains the bloopers from that commercial. The actors kept messing up their lines, and the old lady started cussing. It's hilarious.
I love these live streams. They're like a time capsule. Plus, you've got a very smooth relaxing voice which makes it even better.
Glad you like them!
This was not live or streamed.
Merry Christmas Chris! Glad to see you're doing well! Hitting my nostalgia vibes right now!
Merry Christmas to you, too!
This channel, Game Sack and AVGN are some of my favorite gaming channels, especially when it comes to that nostalgic effect that it/they have on me. Only thing missing is a CRT tv to watch these on late at night as I fall asleep.
Oh man. I've missed these episodes. Glad to have it back!
My favorite series to put on at night to relax or go to sleep after I’ve watched them at least once. I love these let’s reads to just listened to and veg out to
lol, I actually thought about the lid sticker buildup, too. But instead of wondering how thick it was, I wondered if it got so heavy the lid wouldn't pop open.
The 👑 has _returned_ !!!
Thanks, bud!
Oh god I used to subscribe to this, nothing beats getting home from school in the summer and a new issues shows up. I would just lay on the couch and read thru every page. Each issues had unique artworks that they have a little section on how its made.
Yes, they were awesome. I also subscribed to OPM but the magazine itself wasn't that great, bought them because of the demo discs mostly which were awesome.
PSM was easily the first good console-specific magazine. I mainly loved it because it continued the perspective and humor of Game Players.
Game Players was my favorite of all time! All the jokes, hahaha yeah man
I love this. I used to re-read videogame magazines over and over again back when internet wasn't as readily available for everyone and talk about it with my gaming friend. This is such a nostalgia trip for me
Perfect, I was just looking for something to put on while I wrap Christmas gifts :D Happy Holidays, Chris!
You too!
I love your "Let's Read" episodes. Considering I had most of the mags you present, these really take me back. Thank you!
Dude, I've been waiting for a new video either here or CGQ+ for Xmas this year, and boom, here it is! Thank you!
Thanks Chris I always love sitting back and watching your shows you sure work hard and atleast I can say I do really appreciate it
Please continue this series! psm was my favorite magazine around this era and it brings me way back.
Good to see you back @CGQuarterly on this channel. Merry Christmas!
love these read throughs, and glad to hear there's more to come. taking a break is always better than burning out so i'm willing to wait as long as it takes for whatever cool stuff you have in store.
These magazines bring a lot of nostalgia back when growing up. I had stacks of PSM magazines that i would read thru and was always excited to read about upcoming new games and sorts. Thanks for bringing this one back, full of memories.
Back in 1997/1998 my brother and I played a ton of Courier Crisis on the Saturn, this game is so 90's in every sense, the soundtrack, the visuals and the humor.
We also played a lot of NHL '97 on the PS1 and the game is just as fun, against one another or cooperatively, good times and very fun games.
Had a subscription to PSM during these days. Feels like I had it for 2-3yrs. Loved that magazine. For a one platform magazine, it was really well done.
Very much enjoy your content, always a great time. Thank you!
So glad you're back! I love your content. Always take time off when you need it or aren't excited about making content - you can hear the refreshed tone in your voice! We want you to be making these for a long time for us!
Thanks for what you do, we appreciate it!!
Truly an early Christmas present for us all. Thank you so very much for all that you do. It is greatly appreciated as I enjoy your honesty and sincerity. Take care and blessings always!
Thanks for the new video, I find these so relaxing and informative
Thanks for this christmas gift! I love these relaxing read throughs
Glad you're doing more videos. Really, really, love your channel and it inspired me to make my own. Thank you for all the hard work you've done.
Wow, what a great surprise for the holidays. Love these read through videos 😊😊😊
Just discovered your channel right now and its bringing me back old memories. 33 years old and can fondly remember reading mag subscriptions of PSM, Gamepro, IGN and Game Informer from back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Instant subscribe and keep up with the great work
and great to have you back, appreciate your content
was stoked when this popped up on my feed! camera and sound is great...and the lil hand.
Just what I needed. Merry Christmas!
You too!
Best videos on UA-cam! I could listen to these read thrus daily!
I gotta save this for the right time! Thank you! 🙏🏼
YT algo wasn’t recommending the + channel at all, But I’m so glad you’re back and with a let’s read!
I remember pulling this out my mailbox. PSM was my most looked forward to mag. Always looked forward to what crazy art was on the cover. The JOEMAD covers always went crazy
Awesome stuff, Chris . Merry Christmas to you and yours. Thanks for all your content this year.
This is a great Christmas present. These are my favorite vids. I wish you did a million of them. Glad you’re back, I hope you’re recharged. Although I really didn’t know you were gone. I have been loving the weekend rental series. Thanks again, I hope you and your family’s holidays are awesome.
Thanks, you too!
Merry Christmas and thanks for the content!
Either way, this was an absolutely fantastic idea for a video documentary!!
Going through video game magazines of the 90s is all too perfect of an idea!!!
Great work! Thank you 🙏
Thanks Chris, glad to hear that CGQ is ramping back, another fun episode! Thanks & Merry Christmas
Always a blast going on these nostalgic journeys with you and remembering all the fun we had putting the issues of PSM together each month.
Love the content Chris. :-)
Man, that intro is sweet.
Really really enjoying the podcast.
Thank you and Merry Christmas everyone.
So happy your back
Hi Chris,
Wishing you and your love ones a Merry Christmas. Thank you for all your hardwork and dedication you provide in the community and always a pleasure to see you in action bro. 8^)
Anthony...
Thanks, Anthony! You too!
Merry Christmas and thank you for all you do Chris. All your videos are certified gold to me.
Thanks so much, Tyler!!
I think I still have this somewhere. The first year or so of PSM magazine. Good to see you again. Im not reflecting on gaming memories without watching a video from you. Thank you
Alright!! Finally you’re back! I had finished going through every video of yours months ago. Now I have something to watch at work tonight
Love your videos CGQ!
I always love your openings. Here we go!
Good to have you back bud! Excited for the upcoming content.
No way!!!! These are my favorite videos! I was just thinking the other day it'd be nice to see some new Let's Reads from CGQ. Perfect timing. Plus I had this issue when it was in the stands!!! Merry Christmas Chris!!!! I hope you and your loved ones have a great new year!
So pleased CGQ is back, love your content.
Awesome as always. Merry Chris-mas!
Awesome job Chris! I hope you have a Merry Christmas brother
*it’s been like 10yrs since the last video from CGQ… ❤❤❤❤
I really hope a PlayStation out there exists with all the lid stickers on it. Merry Christmas and thanks again for another great year of content.
Thanks Byron! Merry Christmas to you too!
Glad you're back. I enjoy these videos as I was one of those people that had every single issue of egm, psm, next generation, gamepro, etc only to have my parents throw them all out without asking so they could use the closet in my old room to store wrapping paper. The throwbacks are nice.
Sorry to say but that...was not nice of your parents!
Hey man just dropping by to say thank you for publishing this video. Came just at the right tine as I got stuck at home for the holidays due to contracting a certain virus of unknown origin 😅 First time visitor but then I realized that you havent posted in a while. Super glad that you did, otherwise i wouldnt have been exposed to your excellent scholarly work! Thank you for transporting me back to the mid 90s. I remember how much time I spent on V Rally with my Madcatz steering wheel at the time. I remember reading an interview in one of the magazines at the time (was it Gamepro or Next, I forgot) where the developer talked at length about how they simulated the contact patch of each tyre to the road, thats basically what Assetto Corsa does these days! They did that back in 1997
Good to see you back!!
Never stop doing these!
Very awesome. :)
Merry Christmas, Chris, happy holidays and Happy New Year!
Thanks! Same to you!
I’m very happy to hear you’ve got more planned for this channel for this year.
Genuinely my favourite UA-cam channel. Which is typical for me (to get really into something totally non mainstream with sporadic releases).
Even if you do one episode every 5 years I will still be a supporter 👍
Thanks!
@CGQuarterly Merry Christmas and welcome back!
Thanks, you too!
Greet to see you’re still videos…. You were the first batch of UA-camrs I watched years ago
Hilarious interpretation of Lara on the cover. Great vid, glad you’re back around.
Count me among the fans of this format who you picked up during the break, really glad to see you pick it back up!
Those Samsung GX TVs sell for 400 now-a-days.
Another great episode Chris! Merry Xmas and Happy New Year!
Thank you so much for all the hard work you have given us over the years, and thank you for making new videos again. I really love these magazine reading videos, it really takes me back It reminds me of the days when I'd read comic books with my college sweetheart on the couch, just the two of us snuggled under a warm blanket. Not that I'm suggesting I wanna snuggle with you, hahah haha. Seriously, though, thanks for the videos.
Amazing intro.
Man how time is flying.
Ive been watching for almost 10 years. I love your channel because its like listening to an old friend since i can relate so much. Always appreciate the uploads.
Merry Christmas dude , happy New Year.🎄🎁🎅🙏 and heres to at least a few more of CGQ😂🎉
Thanks, same to you!
🎉 Thanks for the holiday gift CGQ.
I remember being completely blown away by the graphics of gameday 98. I remember it being a vast improvement over how 97 looked i wanted it so bad.
PSM was a huge part of my childhood, along with many other gaming mags, like GamePro, Tips & Tricks, O.P.M, EGM, and a few others. Great times. This concept for a video is pretty dope. PSM was pretty great until the latter half of the 2000s when all the old staff were gone and replaced by a new crew, and overall the personality that arguably made the mag what it really was, was gone, and what was left was a hollow shell really. Around 2002 they started including DVDs with the mags that had bunch of pre-release trailers, unedited alpha/beta/debug/etc gameplays, mini-docs, featurettes, they even had hidden video skits in a lot of the earlier discs that were genuinely hilarious.
For a moment, I thought I was on CGQ+.
Merry Christmas, Chris!
Excellent video, love the content on reading through old game magazines, I used to subscribe to a couple back in the day, so someone else's perspective on them are a welcome to watch
All of a sudden, its about time ese, i was waiting for a new lets read
I love your work man. I´m really glad that you're back.
Do some console launches, documentary about console.
Thanks, will do!
love these holiday specials.
14:38 It played very well on PlayStation. I didn't have a PC back then to play Red Alert on but I wanted to play it. Hence, I bought it for the PlayStation and it was an amazing experience, especially playing versus matches via PlayStation link cable. Also, if I recall correctly, full-motion video cut scenes were of higher quality on PlayStation than on PC original. I remember seeing the PC version in my cousin's house, and he bragged about how much better it was on PC, but I pointed out to him that those videos looked better on my PlayStation. He got a little rattled by that.
Merry Christmas Chris! Greetings from Mexico City
Feliz Navidad, my friend!
Thank you Chris for continuing to share these videos with us! I will take them whenever they come. No rush. Merry Christmas to you and your family! The nastalgia you get from this PSM is the same I feel with the read thru's on the early EGM and Nintendo Power mags.
It's funny, I was thingking it and you said it in your video. I don't remember those lid stickers because I don't think I ever had an issue of PSM, but I was like do those come off easlily so each month you can change it up or do you just stack them up and eventually have an inch thick pile of stickers on your lid? LOL
soooo much nostalgiaa, I remember playing through good old demo discs with official playstation magazine.. awesome times!
That pencil hand attachment had me smiling/laughing. Loved the video.
Great listen while doing the chores. The PSX is a console that will forever live in my ❤
You're back!
Thank you for the video
Bro I love CGQ! I’m so stoked that you are back my man. I was worried you died or something.
Not just yet.
PSM was my first ever magazine subscription too, but in the 2000's. I was a pre-teen immigrant kid and was already big into video games, but now I was more quickly learning English from these magazines and then game magazines, reading about my favorite things while perfecting my English.
Don't worry, I did eventually move on to proper books 😅
Btw, I love your videos, glad you're back!
I was just watching your Christmas Special 2022 two days ago, and I noticed at the end of it you said you might have PSM #4 out before last year's New Year's. I was so close to leaving a comment on that video to ask if you were planning to do the PSM #4 readthrough for this Christmas, but I decided not to. And here it is! Merry Christmas!
Hey man good to see you, hope you are in good health. Merry Christmas.
Thanks you too!
Welcome back!
The Hercules game was my weekend game to play before cartoons!
The intro video for NHL 98 is amazing
welcome back bro
PSM was my fav back in the day. First mag I subbed to. The forums, while having a small community, were fun.
Wishing you Merry Christmas and a happy holidays 🎄🎅🎄
You too!
Jet moto was awesome. Always wanted them to bring the series back. It's like bikes and wave runners in one.
