  • Episode 60 - GamePro's Celebrity Video Gamers from August and September of 1991. Anyone who grew up in North America in the 80's and early 90's should instantly recognize JD Roth as the host of both Fun House and GamePro TV. As a means of promotion their new show, GamePro put out this one-off issue looking at some of the popular young stars of the day and what games they played.
Celebrities included in this magazine include Macaulay Culkin (Home Alone), Mayim Bialik and Joey Lawrence (Blossom), Christina Ricci (The Addams Family), Candace Cameron & Jodi Sweetin (Full House), and many more!

    Show Notes:
    - I have had this magazine for probably 2 years, because it never felt like the right time to do the episode. Not sure what changed, but I'm glad that I finally did it because I think it turned out great.
The "face cam" footage is still very grainy. I am told that perhaps I need to update the firmware in my GoPro. Also possible: the GoPro just isn't the right camera for this application. Though I did have not one but two video lights blasting me in the face.
Also be sure to check out my other channel, where I do live streams, nostalgic musings about childhood in the 80's, and even the occasional collection video.

I didn't want to take up too much time in the video talking about the Patreon thing. The primary "perk" is that you get early access to all of my uploads. This video is being released about 5 days early for Patrons, as was "The Sega Genesis in 1990". While becoming a Patron also gets you access to a special channel on the Discord server, that isn't really being used at the moment. As I said on the Patreon page, right now there is only one tier (the $1 level) because I don't feel comfortable setting up a system whereby people get additional "access" based on how much money they contribute. My thinking is that you either support the show or you don't, so you either get the Patreon perks or you don't. Perhaps down the road I'll have a change of heart about this, as I did about Patreon as a whole.
Speaking of which, I can't over-state the fact that this channel takes up almost all of my free time. People say "I thought this was just a hobby?" and yes it was, but at this point it places demands on my time comparable to a job. As time goes on, these episodes take longer to produce because they are more complex. That does not mean that I don't enjoy making the show, or that I don't want to keep doing it. But like many of you, I have a career, a family, and a home, and if this channel is going to require job-levels of time, then it needs to bring in job-levels of revenue. This Let's Read took me at least 20 hours to make, and I simply can't continue to dedicate so much time to them when the UA-cam AdSense revenue doesn't reflect the time that went in. I would prefer to not have to chase down new sponsors for the show, which is why I launched the Patreon campaign.
As I said both on the Patreon page and in this video, if we can get up to the goal amount, I will make sure to create a new Let's Read episode every month. If not, then frankly they are going to be put on the back burner while I focus on content that grows the channel and brings in ad revenue more commensurate with the work that they require. Thanks for reading, and (hopefully) thanks for your support!

Dear Game Sack, thank you for all the amazing content the two of you made throughout all these years. Your videos along with CGQ & Lord Karnage have helped me tremendously through some of the worst of times my chronic depression has led me through. Sure it's video game content you guys make but to some of us it's more than just some videos. All you guys help me personally to zero in on those moments in my life where I was trully happy, playing the retro games & reading retro game mags. Sorry for my ramble, just wanted to say thank you for what you guys do.

I was born in 85, so there is this fuzziness to my early childhood memory. This is not just a nostalgia thing, your presentation puts my mind at ease and actually helps to clear up all of those fuzzy memories. Let's Read is really good, I plan my meal and coffee around it! The editing/timing/presentation is clean and meaningful! I don't feel like I'm wasting my time. Thank You! Definitely worth joining your Patreon.

This was the by far the most impressive Let's Read you've done! The amount of work and care you put into it really shows!
On a side note, Jodie Sweetin briefly went to my Junior High in Cypress, CA, but left because a lot of envious kids gave her a tough time. The thing that drove her away was when she constantly got booed when she kept getting chosen for raffle drawings. The number of raffles was determined by how much candy you sold from a catalog we were given. She obviously sold an obscene amount and I'm ashamed to admit that I eventually did join in the mob of boo birds. We did all feel bad when she left though.

A full breakdown of every single page of a magazine; including all the adverts. I haven't seen anyone else do that that i can recall. Very interesting show.
BTW: what became of 900 numbers? They still exist, but, the modern internet has pushed them far past the peak of their prevalence. As an experiment: dial 1-800, or, 1-900, and make the final seven numbers spell something sexual, and, you will connect with a per minute billed 1-900 service. Even today: all the numbers that spell something are still in use.

*GamePro TV* was a syndicated weekly video game television show that ran from 1990 through 1991. The show was a low-budget partner to GamePro magazine.
Hosted by J. D. Roth (and, initially, co-host Brennan Howard), the program showcased many new and upcoming video games, largely for the NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx-16systems. Viewers could send in recordings of themselves explaining tips and codes for games, one of which was chosen to be shown in each of the early episodes. Viewer mail was also frequently answered on-air.

Great video. There were a lot of those celebrity gamers who I was not familiar with or had completely forgotten about. You talking about Life Goes On actually sparked a memory from when I was younger. I remember that show always being on when I would visit my grandparents' house and one time out of the blue my grandpa goes, "You like that girl, don't you?" referring to Kellie Martin. And the answer was yes. I absolutely did.

Freaking fantastic episode. My formative years were the late 80s/early 90s, and this was a blast of nostalgia. You are dead right about sitcoms of that time, most featured upper middle class families and Roseanne was the first sitcom that I remember featuring a lower middle class family like my own. It felt much more authentic than any other sitcom at the time, and still holds up today. Anyways, great idea to feature this magazine, I don't remember it specifically, but the style of the cover is very reminiscent of those pre-teen mags of the time.

JD Roth...GamePro TV, I was trying to remember where I'd seen his face before at the start of the video. I used to watch GamePro TV every Saturday morning, and I remember writing a letter to the show with a tip (since they posted up a blurb about sending in tips and tricks) for Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa, which at the time everyone referred to as 'Baby Mario'. My Mom bought the famicom version with an adapter from our local rental store, and i didn't realize it was a Japanese game at the time since there was no text in the game, so in hindsight, it's no wonder I never saw my trick on the show, but did I ever make it a point to check every week! 9 minutes into the video, and you already took me on a trip I haven't thought about in ages.

My nostalgia is off the charts right now.
It's always interesting to see things after the fact, all the people here that either faded into obscurity or disappeared for a good while only to reappear upwards of decades later.
That was so enjoyable though, it gives me the same feeling as when I'm in a shop and read through old magazines or something else from that retro era.
    😂 tears of joy

The only kid I knew who had the miracle piano grew up to be a band teacher for the local high school and they’ve won big state championships in marching and concert band.... don’t know how effective it is because he might’ve been a predisposed music nut but I’m sure it didn’t hurt

Instead of _Home Alone_ they should have played _Moonwalker_ .

Wow! In the UK, Pat Sharpe had practically the same career trajectory as JD Roth. On our funhouse we had "the twins" though. Did the yank version have their equivalent?

Yes, this Funhouse had twin cheerleaders. And my teenage self thought they were super hot!

This is hilarious. You should cover some of the teen/kid celebrity interviews they used to have at the end of Nintendo Power too. XD

My cousin, with whom I’ve played video games since the late 80’s, has had the Tyson code memorized for thirty years. If I called him right now, in the middle of the night, waking him up to answer the phone, and asked him for the code he would be able to rattle it off without even having to think about it.

Hey man, love your Let's Read vids - inspired me to try and make some of my own a few years ago, but they didn't go too well - anyway, I have quite a lot of British gaming mags from the late 80s and early 90s - if you're interested in me sending some over to you - just get in touch and I'll see if there's anything you'd like - keep up the awesome work - love this series :)

Great episode. My sister still knows the code to get to Tyson, I ask her for it every couple of years to see if she still remembers, and she always does.

The Wonder Years was one of my favorite shows as a kid, anytime it was on I’d watch it. The ending was kind of a let down but still a solid show. I think the patreon deal is pretty fair especially when your offering ad free on the let’s read videos. Collecting these old mags isn’t easy.

CGQ have you tried sourcing some of the popular gaming mags from the UK?
There were some great one coming out at the time there also, magazines like CVG, mean machines etc would make for some great content, also later on Edge magazine also was a game changer as it was the blueprint for the direction of gaming journalism going forward interviewing developers and doing specials on publishers and studios, things we take for granted in todays coverage.
PS how can you forget Ashley Johnson!! From growing pains, especially considering she is the voice of Ellie from The Last of Us.
