I'm sure that I'm not the only one who's gonna mention this, but that VIP Starring Pamela Anderson game is actually based on a real TV show. VIP aired in syndication between 1998 and 2002, and starred Pam as the head of a bodyguard agency. The closest thing I can compare it to is probably Charlie's Angels with a lot more self awareness. I haven't seen it in a number of years but I can't imagine it's aged well at all.
I had a very large PS1 games growing up but I only remember about half of them because I was addicted to action games and RPGs. We never had any racing or sports games but we had a bit of everything else. Fighting, strategy (real time and turn based), rpgs/jrpgs and a boat load of shooters and action types. My dad was a gamer and loved to share his favorite hobby with his kids. I now have a son to share my hobby with. 😁
One PS game I loved back in middle school I feel no one remembers or ever talks about was an Atlus game called Kartia. Tactics, monsters, and card playing. It was a lot of fun
I tried playing that game so many times and for some reason it just never clicked with me. It looked amazing though. I rented it so many times without ever actually getting anywhere lmao
Man I loved Apocalypse as a kid. I remember asking all of my family if they knew which movie it was based on. When I realized it was a completely original project it blew my mind. I'd replay it sooo many times, thinking there was a secret way to get a hidden good ending. Jfc, what a good time that was.
duude a friend had a demo version on a sampler game and i've always had a vague memory of it that didn't even make sense and looked up and realized it was a real game just this last week. haha def going to need to revisit and play the full thing, remember it being super fun!
God I loved that game, I spent forever as a kid/young teen trying to see if there was a movie of it cause Bruce Willis in it I assumed there had to be a film haha
12:51 I remember Kingsley's Adventure extremely well, it was one of at least 15 or 16 PS1 games that I used to own and play on my original PS2 a little over 21 years ago when I was a kid. While the controls were a bit of a pain for 6 year old me to learn at first, I loved the cartoonish visuals, the music, and the funny voice sounds the characters made during dialogue box scenes.
It was a whole new world, there was only so much you could do in 2D so 3D presented so many options. A lot of the games were pretty janky or weird but that's also what made them great.
It's really gratifying to see a lot of my favourite PS1 games here, I loved Jersey Devil and Tai Fu! I was probably a bit young to really think about whether they were good games or not. I don't know how 'forgotten' it is, but Wild Arms is another brilliant PS1 game that I don't think I know anyone else who played.
I love Koudelka. It's not the most mechanically engaging game, but it's aesthetically a cut above the rest. The cutscenes, voice acting, story and presentation are a all great, and the combat really isn't any more tedious than a lot of other games of the time. my fav obscure ps1 game
You don't know how happy it's made me to see someone shine a light on Kingsley. One of my favourite childhood games and while the controls did suck and took forever to get used too, it was full of charm and even has some dark vibes in the later parts of the game. A true hidden gem, glad you enjoyed it, it really is worth a revamp and resurgence with decent controls
Ehrgeiz is one of those forgotten games by square that was kinda weird. On one hand there was a 3d fighting game using final fantasy characters, full 360 degree movement, and an interactive environment; on the other a dungeon crawler/hack and slash rpg that felt extremely bland but charming in its own way. I think there were minigames as well, but I am not too sure anymore.
I wish Square would make Racing Games again. I played Racing Lagoon, its a Car-Rpg and its sooo much Fun imo. Had to emulate bcz its JP only. Another Car-Rpg that everyone got was Road Trip Adventure and honestly its great, lots of Minigames, funny Sidequest, many parts for Customization.
I believe Ehrgeiz's claim to fame was Cloud Strife was a playable player. If it wasn't for that - no doubt - no-one would have ever bought the game lol
@davewalmash6849 Oh definitely. They only included FF7 characters in the game because they knew it would sell. The Japanese version doesn't have FF7 characters in it as far as I know.
I loved Alundra (although I never finished it). You’re so right about there being a plethora of JRPGs on the PS1. I really wish more of them could be gathered into a collection or given remasters. And turn-based combat is still my jam at 40 years old, lol!
I had actually played and beaten Alundra 2 way before I even tried to learn about Alundra 1. The best thing to do between the games is to just treat them as their own standalones. They basically already do so, themselves. I'd cover both of them together on my own channel if I ever get the time and mood.
I'm literally so very convinced that Gru and his Minions was inspired by Misadventures of Tron Bonne both are self-proclaimed villain, both have huge debt to pay, and both have yellow minions/servants that will do anything, both also save the day in the end like, you can't tell me its just a coincidence
I would add to that list Silent Bomber, a great action game, with awesome controls that had a versus mode where you could play as the bosses you defeated during the campaign. And perhaps Ark of Time, a nice point and click adventure that made you go all around the world looking for a missing professor. It had some weirdly mysoginous dialogue lines near the end that I find hilarious.
Omfg i actually genuinely love Silent Bomber that game was my whole childhood, my dad had bought it without much conviction back then but then realized it was super fun and different and when he let me play with the playstation i'd always pick that game. It's so rare to ever see anyone mention that game and it's a shame it's entirely forgotten considering how cool it is. I always feel like if it were remade today it'd be a big hit with how simple yet incredibly fun the gameplay is.
YESSS one of the best Games ever on PS1!! The Music is such a banger and controls feel insanely smooth for this Console. The yellow Robot Mini Boss in the Pal Version is the Voice Actor from Fairy Goodparents Jean Claude. No matter how often i tried i cant beat the last Boss till this Day.
Silent bomber was so damn good. Last time I checked it was pretty damn expensive though so I stick to emulation with that one. Unfortunate because it would really be a good one to add to my collection.
Sheep Raider is one that I would absolutely highly recommend! If you like puzzles and stealth and you combine those two together, then you get this game. Its freaking awesome! A true hidden gem.
Wild 9 was dope! Loved the force Beam to swing around these damn Robots in the Grinder :D That reminds me i need to get Earthworm Jim back for my Collection but Prices arent looking too bright atm.
I remember watching my mom play Wild 9! She owned a ton of PS1 games, so I figured something she liked would be on this list. RIP Mom❤ (I myself am about to turn 35. My mom and even her mom gamed until the end of their lives. Imagine a 79 year old playing Genesis in a muu muu robe and chain smoking-- that was my grandma lol)
God, Team Buddies was my favorite game as a kid. No one ever talks about it nowadays, and I've only ever seen it once out in the wild besides my copy. The PAL version had swearing in it, so my friends and I thought we were so cool for playing it.
One of my personal favourite PS1 titles is a game known as Guardian's Crusade (Knight and Baby in the US). 3D RPG with puzzle elements and living toys as battle companions, also a transforming baby dragon that could learn enemy forms. Was pretty fun!
Honestly a game I NEVER hear anyone talk about anymore is the Colony Wars series. 3D space shooter with branching paths and so many endings, it was incredibly interesting and innovative for the time.
I used to play the demo level over and over on a PS Magazine disc. I never was able to get the actual game, but I still remember that level til this day.
This and its cousin series, G-Police, were great! At least in my memory. I have not played them in over 20 years, so I'm not sure how insurmountable their jank is nowadays.
My favorite forgotten ps1 game is Intelligent Qube. It's a fun 3D puzzle game where you control a character that has to get rid of the cube before it crushes him. Treasures of The Deep is another one, but I tried playing it recently and it didn't hold up. It's an adventure game where you scuba dive and avoid sharks and other scavengers trying to find the all the treasures.
Two games I always suggest as hidden gems are Azure Dreams and Rollcage. Azure Dreams was a Mystery Dungeon/Roguelike with some monster collecting, town building, and dating elements. One of Konamis best hidden gems. Rollcage on the other hand is a really fun racing game when the cars can flip over and still keep driving. It's like Mario Kart mixed with Wipeout.
The Tecmo Deception series is criminally forgotten. I first was introduced to the series with Kagero: Deception 2 on the PS1. In these games you're put into a castle of some sort, and basically have to defend yourself from mutiple enemies by setting 3 types of traps, being floor, wall, and ceiling. These can be strung together into combos using just the traps themselves, or the environment as well. So say you got a floor trap that springs your opponent three spaces forward, you can then have a boulder trap fall from the ceiling to crush them where they land, then maybe have a spike wall hit them as they stand up. It definitely gets deeper than that, when you start using pillars, fireplaces, ect, from the environment, to deal out more damage, and get higer combo rankings at the end of the level, which gives you currency to unlock a plethora of more traps. It's an often brutal strategy game series that hasn't seen a release since the PS3, surprisingly. While I'm here I'll add Future Cop LAPD. Pretty fun game where you're in a walking battletank that can transform into a car. You just roam around the levels, completing objectives and just blowing stuff up. Good stuff.
for the longest time, I thought I'd imagined Kingsley's Adventure. my mom played a lot of it when I was young but I never heard anyone ever mention it for years. then some five years ago I remembered it and asked around, found out the name and was transported back into my childhood
Oh men KINGSLEY was actually my first game on ps1. I remember playing it with my father, amazed by the graffics of the new console at that time. This video made me feel so much nostalgia, i didnt remember it at all, thank you so much, big props from Argentina!
I seriously just heard of Kingsley's Adventure four days ago when I saw it at my local game store. They wanted 60 bucks for it though so I'll go back to unnoticing Kingsley.
Dear God Yes! Alundra has always and will always be my favorite ps1 game of all time! The music, the story, the dungeons, the art design. Everything about it is just so damn good. Thank you for preaching the good word of Alundra, brother!
OG Alundra was one of my No. 1 titles when I was 12. I keep telling myself to go back and complete it again. - There were these rare golden eagles you could collect, I think you needed 100 of them or something, and there was this mysterious Rod inside a Shop, in the middle of nowhere - that sold the Rod for 100 Golden Eagles, but I only had 99. - I never found the remaining golden eagle.... no matter how many times I played through and searched.
My gosh The Hoobs was such a bizarre experience for me as a kid. Especially since the whole reason I even had it was my mom saw it at the shop and thought it'd be a fun little game for us. She didn't even realize the version she bought was entirely in German x,D But it was still very entertaining as a little kid who thought the characters were speaking very funny.
THE DIVIDE: ENEMIES WITHIN for the PS1 has to be one of the most forgotten games in its library. And I think it happens to be actually pretty good. It's one of those games that don't even appear in most Hidden Gems list either. A pretty off the beaten path game. Hope you can include it in the next forgotten and weird PS1 games video if you haven't already.
8:23 Infogrames' Alpha Waves was possibly the first 3D platformer, five years before Jumping Flash. Jumping Flash may be the first fully 3D FPS/platformer hybrid on a console. Gotta specify that last bit because Exact's previous game, Geograph Seal, was also a 3D FPS/platformer hybrid - but it was on the X68000 computer.
A fun game I used to own for PS 1 that nobody seems to remember is Bravo Air Race, you had a bunch of WW2 airplanes and stunt planes and instead of dogfights you had some fairly challenging racecourses.
I got really excited and hopeful that you were gonna mention Legend of Legaia or Unholy War. Two of my favorite ps1 games that no one seems to remember. Maybe a future video?
Was just about to say "what a great game...apart from the last level" but you beat me to it. Not only did I find the Doc Ock/Carnage monster really unnerving, but that blind chase got me to a new level of stress 😂
I was obsessed with Rollcage and the Wipeout series!! Partly because of the excellent mix of Electronic Dance music (or "Electronica" as it was dubbed in the 90s). They even released the soundtrack to Wipeout XL on CD! In addition to the banging beats and thrilling gameplay they looked incredibly cool due to being designed by the super hip 'Designers Republic' out of the UK. I would love to see a new release to those series. One can dream... 🎮🎹💊🤖🖤😁
I fell in love with Wipeout playing the HD Omega Collection from 2017! I'd love a new entry :D And in case you didn't know, there's a game called GRIP that's a Rollcage spiritual successor. I haven't played it but I think it's worth looking into. Electronica has been my favorite genre since 90's games introduced me
@@saintallison Hells yea... I've seen Grip as well and agree it looks to be Rollcage's spiritual successor. Sadly I've also yet to play it. I think I'm going to have to do something about that. Got me wanting to play some futuristic racing games!
Have you played Landstalker on the Genesis ? Alundra was a spiritual sequel created by some of the developers of Landstalker. If you like Alundra check it out, It's one of my favorite Genesis games.
A few more ideas for Part 2, Austin: - Tomba! (obscure launch game from the creator of Dragon Ball Z, no less) - Klonoa of Wind - Chocobo Racing (yup...FF7 had a kart racer.) - Pink Panther: Pinkadelic Pursuit (really good stealth platformer) - Snowboard Kids - Psybadek (this had some hype at the time, but has been totally forgotten since) - Speed Freaks (possibly the best Mario Kart clone ever made) - Micro Maniacs (Micro Machines, but with foot racing) - Circuit Breakers (Micro Machines clone) - Motorhead (this one is out on Steam...with PS1 controls!) - Libero Grande (first-person soccer game, also had hype at the time) As well as the aforementioned Assault, Gubble and Hybrid.
Jade Cocoon Story of the Tamamayu is my favorite ps1 game and has a very interesting history to it. There's a sequel on the ps2 but it's pretty bad for similar reasons to the last game you talked about since they dumbed-down the story way too much. I'd love to see your take on these two games.
Lovely game! It hit me right in the childhood Though, I'll admit, there were some monster designs that were... Yikes. If they were to rerelease (as well as redesign/take out some monster designs) I'd be a happy camper! ^w^
@@stephenmcgrathbassmy grandpa saw the game title on a demo disc I had and asked in an INCREDIBLY thick, almost incoherent Louisiana accent: "Aye boy what game you playing over there now"? I told him it was "Jade Caccoon" and he was like: "JAKE THA COON"??! I completely forgot about that memory until just now. Thanks 🤣
Good to see Running Wild get a mention, that game was awesome! Some other great games that didn't get too much action were Poy Poy (pretty much if you made the "Bash" levels from Crash Bash into a whole game) and Total Drivin'. To this day, Total Drivin' is still probably my favourite racing game ever.
A developer from the SNES era that I love and am fascinated by is Quintet. They made six games for the SNES, and they were all bangers. They made one game that was released in the west, and that was The Granstream Saga for the PS1, then all the members got poached off by other publishers after the game's release, and the studio never released anything significant in the West again. I remember advertisements for this game at the time of its' release, but I was more into flashier games at the time so I never picked it up. I would though if I knew it was the spiritual successor to Soulblazer, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma.
Tail of the Sun is a great little game! The 32bit generation had many unique titles you can tell that video game developers started experimenting more with genres around this time. Some of my favorite games from that. Are the exploration games like Tail of the Sun and the LSD dream simulation game, and the under water simulation / deep sea diving games
You literally unlocked a memory for me with Jersey Devil. I have been trying to figure out what that stupid game was for 15+ years now and literally nobody has heard of or talks about this game at all. I honestly just assumed it was a fever dream I had as a kid. Ty for cursing me with this knowledge again Austin.
Dunno if anyone has mentioned it yet but Tomba 2 is a *fantastic* PS1 game. 2.5D side scroller action puzzle game about capturing evil pigs who have cursed the world
@@LuniaTV Same tbh. I didn't like Azure Dreams when I 1st picked it up, ended up loving it after giving it a 2nd try. One of Konamis best and less known titles imo.
tail concerto was great, i remember i had a playstation demo disc with a portion of the game on it. it was in japanese though and i never got to play the localized english version till years later, when i homebrewed my ps classic
There are a lot of games that are more forgotten... - Pandemonium: A pseudo-3d platformer with one sultry sorceress and a zany jester and his BIG STICK. - Assault Rigs: A starter title that lets you relive TRON, in a tank finishing levels. Very cool and easy to control even without the dual sticks. - Legacy of LeGaia: An RPG with a unique element, you get to choose how you punch/kick the opponent. Combos are earned throughout the game. - N2O: A typical Tempest-style game with a soundtrack by Crystal Method, and the more enemies you blow up the faster you go
Konami Computer Entertainment's Poy Poy games are definitely hidden gems. They're the kind of games that don't look like much, but you really get a feel for them once you start playing them. Poy Poy 2 even drops a whole bunch of lore out of left field, considering the first gamed had very little to do with any sort of lore from what I've played of it.
Oh, that's a party game-like where each character has their own unique skills right? Where you can also customize the said skill by customizing the gloves? I remember liking spamming hurricane skill
Me and a roommate rented an RPG back in 2001, I'd never played a 2 player RPG before, so when we found Blaze and Blade that day is was like a miracle, because now we could both play together. I imagine the game would be pretty weak playing as one player, but to be able to create characters, play simultaneously, it blew our minds. Its def a lesser spoken of game.
I'm not sure how old you are, but for folks my age who were into gaming, a lot of these titles are remembered (even if not played). What you have to remember is we all had chipped PS1s and used to get/buy copied games by the shovel full. Because you could get pretty much any game for cheap or free, we played so many things that would otherwise be unheard of. Fun fact: someone at my school used to sell copied games. Their dad owned a video game shop and made copies of the games, so clearly selling cheap stuff at volume was more profitable than going legit.
I know exactly what you mean about the crystal interface of elemental gearbolt. I fucking love that stone-and-crystal, kinda crunchy look the UI has. The classic everquest UI has the same look and I saw it on various other things back in the day. Minimalistic interfaces that give maximum focus to the actual content is great and all, but I need something to IV that fantasy skeuomorphism straight into my veins once in a while.
Here are some more obscure games that I had in my collection you might be interested in doing: - Rosco McQueen - mascot platformer but the gimmick is that he’s a fire fighter that must extinguish fires or you lose the level. He also hits robots with his axe. Tank controls, super hard for a 12 year old - RC Stunt Copter: the most difficult game in the world, some weird ass commentary by the Voice overs - small soldiers: everyone’s favourite action figure movie of the 90s but the game was dark as - erghiez and racing lagoons- two of squares attempt at getting out of the RPG genre
Alundra was a phenomenal release. Controlled well, great puzzles, decent combat, but it was that atmosphere and world building I was most impressed by. Between that and Final Fantasy Tactics, I was playing some pretty heavy games at 12 years old haha.
I'm so glad Jumping Flash was on this list. That was one of the first games I ever played, along with the original Ridge Racer and Destruction Derby. I spent countless hours on those games and have fond memories of them all. Especially Jumping Flash being all but forgotten today, it was really fun and kind of challenging for 5 year old me.
Without a doubt one of the most underrated games and one my personal favourites is "Heart of Darkness"! I do have fond memories playing that game with my brothers and laughing at each other when you we died in game cuz the deaths were frankly kinda gruesome 😳 I do also remember playing "Tobal No.1", i tried replaying last year and I don't remember being so incredibly slow lol 😂 I would like to play the sequel since you can plays as Chocobo 😅 the weirdest "game", if you want call it that, is called "Fluid" 🐬 this game doesn't have anything to do with ECCO the dolphin 😅 just hard to explain but does involve music. Speaking of Point Blank, there's was a similar game called "Rescue Shot" 🐰
I had two copies of fluid. I found them in a phone box with the security tags still attached. It was basically a music program like the 'EJ' series. You swam around collecting sound loops and samples and then put them together to make music, which would then play as you swam around some more. It was weird as all hell, and there was no actual point in the game itself. Why not just release it as a music creator? Nah...better swim around sunken monoliths as a dolphin, collecting noises. It was a bit shit, but at least it was a kind of shit that smelled different to all the other shit
I actually did grow up playing tiny tank, and for a 6 year old who didn't know any better shit was tight. I still have the disc and all my PS1 games. Ima go ahead and get myself a playstation to see which one works and play through them, thank you for unlocking these memories!
Some of my favorite hidden gem games were Jade Cacoon, Eternal Eyes, Devil Dice, Rollaway, Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring, and Ninja: Shadow of Darkness. PS1 is still one of the greatest consoles ever. There were so many good and obscure games for it.
One of my favorite PSX games that seems pretty forgotten - in my experience at least - is Legend of Legaia. The story isn't anything too ground breaking, but it had some of my favorite battle mechanics. It had a Pokemon-esque system where you can capture monsters you fight and turn them into FF style summons, and the basic attack was sort of inspired by fighting games. Rather than just pressing a button, you had a set amount of inputs you could put directional inputs into. Each input was its own hit, but with specific combos, you'd finish with a special move making a lot of the special attacks have a feel kinda like doing a combo in Budokai and ending with a Kamehameha. Fun stuff.
I don't know if Azure Dreams is forgotten but that was the game I remember the most fondly back when I played ps1 games. It introduced me to 'dating' in gaming but also town building. Being in one town in the middle of the desert, slowly adding things like Theater and Casino and many more to make the town grow... it just made me wish more games had that. Plus the main character talking in detail about each dish you order in the restaurant always made me feel hungry. There's also the tower but I always sucked at that part. I had to use gameshark just to be able to reach the top and finish the story.
A few potentially obscure games I use to love playing were; Rapid Reload, a well done side scrolling shooter. Machine Hunter, a top down twin stick style shooter. Hogs of War, a 3D worms clone. Fighting Force, a 3D Streets of Rage either clone or spin-off. Future Cop LAPD, a 3D transforming mech shooter. Kula World, a puzzle game where you're a beachball. So many more, some of them were great, and the others, I'm just glad I had the time to waste on bad games as a kid.
I loved Unholy War, was such a cool idea at the time to have isometric battlefields that go into 1v1s. Albeit some of those characters are so overpowered.
12:50 I treat Vimm's Lair like my own little secret lol always makes me laugh when I remember tons of people know about it. Also Kingsley's Adventure is a BANGER! My 1st ever, non-pokemon, RPG.
I spent so many hours playing 3xtreme, Firebugs (always felt like a badass when the ''put ya hands up'' was playing), Running Wild etc. thanks for reminding them, i almost forget about those..
Still got my copy of Tron Bonne, it's an incredible charming game with a lot of variations to the gameplay, they even have a bonus optional dungeon with a optional boss, it was a fun time.
I played almost all of the rpgs you mentioned as well as some others you didn’t (kings field 1 and 2?). I still have a copy of Tail of the Sun. A really very game. And one thing about Alundra: it’s haaaard! It took me a long time to complete it 100 %. Some puzzles are really difficult and navigating the map to find everything gets really complicated. Excellent video!!
You know I've always been really disappointed their aren't more VR games styled after the lightgun games! I'm so glad someone else agrees lol. They're perfect for it! Not super hard to make, would work perfectly fine on the Quests limited hardware, and are just a good time. I would give anything for a Time Crisis collection ported over for the Quest Edit: Oh also, have you ever mentioned Pandemonium on the show? It's a 2.5D platformer I always played at my friends house as a kid and I remember it being really weird but a good game.
Thank you for bringing up MegaMan Legends and the Misadventures of Tron Bonne!! Another obscure PS1 game that is my absolute favorite that has some similarities to MegaMan Legends is Tail Concerto. It's a pretty short game if you know what you're doing, but it's so enjoyable! Also has some great voice acting and animated scenes for its time.
Man, I rented most of these as a kid! Tiny Tank was awesome, wish I'd bought it. Jersey Devil was tough. 989 Studios made a game called Wild 9 that was pretty sick. Tomba was cool and weird. Threads of Fate was great, but I think you had that in another video. Lunar 2 might have been my first experience with anime boobies
this vid was a rollercoaster of emotions , when you mentioned apocalypse i remember playing the heck out of it as a kid. but years back i lost all my games and about 5 years ago i bought a second hand ps1 so i was looking at some retro retailers for the game found it for about 15 bucks then decided i needed to check anyway went upstairs to my retro corner and found out not only did i already have it i also got the die hard trilogy.... so im gonna dissapear into my retro corner for a day or so haha
I don't know how well it did but there was an Atlus RPG I really liked on the system called Thousand Arms. You played mainly as a spirit blacksmith known as Meis, The game was actually fairly solid with a unique battle system where one character did the bulk of the fighting with the others backing them up and swapping out every so often. A really unique part was it was mixed in with a dating sim, and the improvements you could make on weapons depended on your relationship with each girl. The game was also nearly fully voice acted and they even did a competent job of it.
Nice, video there were a few games that I didn't know of...but Alundra kinda caught me by surprise. Because in my book that was kinda of a staple game...heck when I first played through it I had rented it from my local VHS rental store in Greece. So I was always under the impression that since I played this in my little country in 1998 ,this title must have been huge.
I'm happy that I played a lot of the games that you mentioned (yeah, including Elemental Gearbolt, which was awesome!), but on the other hand, I'm sad that you missed a whole genre that was pretty popular in the PSX era; The Fighting games genre. On PSX you could find: - Megatudo 2096 - Cardinal Syn - Psychic Force - Ehrgeiz - Destrega - Evil Zone And so many more.

ANYWAYS, what are some other old PS1 games I should take a look at? Or just, you know, hidden gems that time is forgetting about? I gots to know.
Hey do a Legends of Dragoon retrospective
Monkey Magic on the Ps1 is one you might be interested in for being a obscure mediocre forgotten game lol
I highly recommend checking out the Divide Enemies Within, as it's pretty much Super Metroid in 3D!!
check out gun4ir. they make a lightgun kit that works with emulators and led/lcd tv's.
I actually like the sequel to 'Alundra' more 🤷
I'm sure that I'm not the only one who's gonna mention this, but that VIP Starring Pamela Anderson game is actually based on a real TV show. VIP aired in syndication between 1998 and 2002, and starred Pam as the head of a bodyguard agency. The closest thing I can compare it to is probably Charlie's Angels with a lot more self awareness. I haven't seen it in a number of years but I can't imagine it's aged well at all.

One PS game I loved back in middle school I feel no one remembers or ever talks about was an Atlus game called Kartia. Tactics, monsters, and card playing. It was a lot of fun
Atlus was on fire back then.
@@L0wallyn they really were!
I tried playing that game so many times and for some reason it just never clicked with me. It looked amazing though. I rented it so many times without ever actually getting anywhere lmao
@@freakyfro99 I finished it with Lacryma, the lady. I was very impressed with the story, I thought it was really good!
I think a dedicated hardcore to Atlus remember it, either that or it sold terribly because it's now the same price as RRP on modern games.
Yeah I have that game currently and have it on my Ambernic rg35xx h 😊
Its definitely one of my favourites
I loved playing Apocalypse. A twin stick shooter... that used buttons instead of a stick, the jankiest platforming and the edgiest ost I still enjoy.
Man I forgot about that game. Was so fun.
God I loved that game, I spent forever as a kid/young teen trying to see if there was a movie of it cause Bruce Willis in it I assumed there had to be a film haha
Apocalypse basically set my music tastes for the rest of my life. I will forever love that game.
The OST is why I bought it. The rock remix of Control by Poe, who also voiced Mary in the game. That makes it a dear in my heart for that alone.
"Well, dip me in shit and roll me in cracker crumbs." This is my new catchphrase for 2023 🤪
12:51 I remember Kingsley's Adventure extremely well, it was one of at least 15 or 16 PS1 games that I used to own and play on my original PS2 a little over 21 years ago when I was a kid. While the controls were a bit of a pain for 6 year old me to learn at first, I loved the cartoonish visuals, the music, and the funny voice sounds the characters made during dialogue box scenes.
PlayStation was weird but that's what made it cool , so many unique and strange games😸
The output of the PS1 was a lot more creative than anything Sony has done for at least the last two consoles.
@pious83 100%, great games but very derivative. I feel like The Last of Us kicked it off and we've been following that formula ever since.
It was a whole new world, there was only so much you could do in 2D so 3D presented so many options. A lot of the games were pretty janky or weird but that's also what made them great.
lots of games with creative ideas
It's like eating at a Cici's Pizza
It's really gratifying to see a lot of my favourite PS1 games here, I loved Jersey Devil and Tai Fu! I was probably a bit young to really think about whether they were good games or not. I don't know how 'forgotten' it is, but Wild Arms is another brilliant PS1 game that I don't think I know anyone else who played.
Wild Arms was cool in the fact that it broke from the usual fantasy setting for RPG's and gave it a Western flavour.
I love Koudelka. It's not the most mechanically engaging game, but it's aesthetically a cut above the rest. The cutscenes, voice acting, story and presentation are a all great, and the combat really isn't any more tedious than a lot of other games of the time. my fav obscure ps1 game
15:37 I loved playing Apocalypse when I was a kid.
I couldn't get enough of that game.
That and the Banjo like voices or the coffee drinkers part. So much charm.
Fellow Kingsley kid checking in. We're out there.
NitroRad reviewed it.
Ayy another Kingsley enjoyer! I miss this game, man... I need a copy of it so bad!
I was one of the programmers on Kingsley's Adventure and I'm happy to hear that people still remember it fondly! I had a lot of fun working on it.
The dungeon crawl part of the game is a carryover from the developer's Tobal series, which is as weird as it is obscure.
Xbox series can run retroarch
I have fond memories of Alundra but mostly horrible memories of fighting a bull boss in a tower and failing
I had actually played and beaten Alundra 2 way before I even tried to learn about Alundra 1.
The best thing to do between the games is to just treat them as their own standalones. They basically already do so, themselves. I'd cover both of them together on my own channel if I ever get the time and mood.
My dad and I both loved Alundra. I still replay it every couple years.
I'm literally so very convinced that Gru and his Minions was inspired by Misadventures of Tron Bonne
both are self-proclaimed villain, both have huge debt to pay, and both have yellow minions/servants that will do anything, both also save the day in the end
like, you can't tell me its just a coincidence
Finished it for the like 200th time the other week always one of my top 5
YESSS one of the best Games ever on PS1!!
The Music is such a banger and controls feel insanely smooth for this Console.
The yellow Robot Mini Boss in the Pal Version is the Voice Actor from Fairy Goodparents Jean Claude.
No matter how often i tried i cant beat the last Boss till this Day.
Silent bomber was so damn good. Last time I checked it was pretty damn expensive though so I stick to emulation with that one. Unfortunate because it would really be a good one to add to my collection.
Super expensive unless you want you want a different version of it
Sheep Raider is one that I would absolutely highly recommend! If you like puzzles and stealth and you combine those two together, then you get this game.
Its freaking awesome! A true hidden gem.
Was that called Sheep dog and wolf in europe, if so I still own it and always found it hard as nails.
@@alexjohnston8889 Yup. Thats the one.
A couple of games that I think deserve a mention are Wild 9 and Monkey Hero. Both great ps1 classics that don't get enough attention!
Wild 9 was dope! Loved the force Beam to swing around these damn Robots in the Grinder :D
That reminds me i need to get Earthworm Jim back for my Collection but Prices arent looking too bright atm.
Wild 9 was wicked!!
I remember watching my mom play Wild 9! She owned a ton of PS1 games, so I figured something she liked would be on this list. RIP Mom❤
(I myself am about to turn 35.
I played it on a demo disc. Every now and then that it would pop up in my memories even all these years later cause it's just so unique.
I honestly only clicked this video to see if he mentioned team buddies. Such a great game 😭
One of my personal favourite PS1 titles is a game known as Guardian's Crusade (Knight and Baby in the US). 3D RPG with puzzle elements and living toys as battle companions, also a transforming baby dragon that could learn enemy forms. Was pretty fun!
That was a good one! I loved finding a new LT. I bought the US version as Guardian's Crusade though.
Honestly a game I NEVER hear anyone talk about anymore is the Colony Wars series. 3D space shooter with branching paths and so many endings, it was incredibly interesting and innovative for the time.
Another great game from the publisher/developer Psygnosis.
I had CW 1 and 2,absolutely loved both of them. Awesome games.
Another good Psygnosis game was Blast Radius. It was like Colony Wars but more arcade-like.
At least Intelligent Qube got a place on the PS1 Classic
Interactive Media Sampler #4 gang?
This was a great time where no one was sure how 3D should be done, so there was a lot of wild experimentation allowed.
Blasto seems forgotten but it’s still a wonderful piece of work from Phil Hartman.
There is always emulation
Soft mod an SNES mini. Mine runs so much it’s not even funny what the damn thing is capable of
Dear God Yes! Alundra has always and will always be my favorite ps1 game of all time! The music, the story, the dungeons, the art design. Everything about it is just so damn good. Thank you for preaching the good word of Alundra, brother!
Glad to see Koudelka mentioned, that game is pretty great and it has some of the best PS1 english dub voice acting (I mean that genuinely)
Fun fact, the English dub is the original dub. The game was released in Japan with subtitles.
Rising Zan is the goat of forgotten "so bad it's good" games that still creeps into my mind's eye every now and then. I think of the theme song often.
Dude like my whole life that theme has popped in and out my mind I thought I was the only one who ever played it
My gosh The Hoobs was such a bizarre experience for me as a kid. Especially since the whole reason I even had it was my mom saw it at the shop and thought it'd be a fun little game for us. She didn't even realize the version she bought was entirely in German x,D
But it was still very entertaining as a little kid who thought the characters were speaking very funny.
The developers who did Jersey Devil also did the Bugs Bunny: Lost In Time game.
I am so glad you mentioned elemental gearbolt... that was one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE games on the PS1
Seeing 989 Studios made me INSTANTLY unlock memories of playing Cool Borders 3 religiously!! So, thanks for that Austin, I genuinely appreciate it! :)
Oh my God I forgot about that game 😂
Syphon filter
989 were legends
One of my favourite obscure PS1 games is Dragon Valor. So much replay value with all the branching storylines. Sadly it is forgotten by history.
Glad to see you give the Spiderman games on PS1 some love. Never got to play Enter Electro but that first one gave me plenty of good times.
They were both good, I recall collecting all the suits. The chase at the end of the 1st was tough for 7/8 year old me though
@@HLGJammer that chase used to have me stressed tf out
Was just about to say "what a great game...apart from the last level" but you beat me to it.
I'd love a new entry :D
And in case you didn't know, there's a game called GRIP that's a Rollcage spiritual successor.
Alundra is amazing! I collect jrpgs especially for the ps1 (have most of em), and love hearing you talk about em! Keep up the great work man!
Have you played Landstalker on the Genesis ? Alundra was a spiritual sequel created by some of the developers of Landstalker. If you like Alundra check it out, It's one of my favorite Genesis games.
A few more ideas for Part 2, Austin:
- Tomba! (obscure launch game from the creator of Dragon Ball Z, no less)
- Klonoa of Wind
- Chocobo Racing (yup...FF7 had a kart racer.)
- Pink Panther: Pinkadelic Pursuit (really good stealth platformer)
- Snowboard Kids
- Psybadek (this had some hype at the time, but has been totally forgotten since)
- Speed Freaks (possibly the best Mario Kart clone ever made)
- Micro Maniacs (Micro Machines, but with foot racing)
- Circuit Breakers (Micro Machines clone)
- Motorhead (this one is out on Steam...with PS1 controls!)
- Libero Grande (first-person soccer game, also had hype at the time)
As well as the aforementioned Assault, Gubble and Hybrid.
Loved that game. It had a very strange atmosphere
Jade Cocoon was so good, absolutely had a lot of fun with that game.
Lovely game! It hit me right in the childhood Though, I'll admit, there were some monster designs that were... Yikes. If they were to rerelease (as well as redesign/take out some monster designs) I'd be a happy camper! ^w^
@@animekitty6460 IKR? Some of them were super weird. XD
@@stephenmcgrathbassmy grandpa saw the game title on a demo disc I had and asked in an INCREDIBLY thick, almost incoherent Louisiana accent:
"Aye boy what game you playing over there now"?
I told him it was "Jade Caccoon" and he was like:
"JAKE THA COON"??!
My man dropped a Mystical Ninja starring Goemon ref in a PS1 video. Bless you forever Austin
Same, as soon as I saw it my jaw dropped and there was the weirdest wave of nostalgia for a game that came out when I was 4.
I played a lot of Jersey Devil as a kid! I don't think I ever beat it though, it was famously punishing for a game aimed at 10 year olds.
Dunno if anyone has mentioned it yet but Tomba 2 is a *fantastic* PS1 game. 2.5D side scroller action puzzle game about capturing evil pigs who have cursed the world
If you ever do a part two, I'd recommend Azure Dreams, Guardians Crusade, and Tail Concerto. Don't see or hear anyone ever talk about those.
@@LuniaTV Same tbh. I didn't like Azure Dreams when I 1st picked it up, ended up loving it after giving it a 2nd try. One of Konamis best and less known titles imo.
Azure Dreams was so cool. I COULD adventure... or go rug shopping...
tail concerto was great, i remember i had a playstation demo disc with a portion of the game on it. it was in japanese though and i never got to play the localized english version till years later, when i homebrewed my ps classic
Did he mention Evil Zone?
@@LuniaTV me too, i'm beginning to think it was some kind of fatal error the devs missed and it can brick the game.
Here are some more obscure games that I had in my collection you might be interested in doing:
- Rosco McQueen - mascot platformer but the gimmick is that he’s a fire fighter that must extinguish fires or you lose the level. He also hits robots with his axe. Tank controls, super hard for a 12 year old
- RC Stunt Copter: the most difficult game in the world, some weird ass commentary by the Voice overs
- small soldiers: everyone’s favourite action figure movie of the 90s but the game was dark as
- erghiez and racing lagoons- two of squares attempt at getting out of the RPG genre
Alundra was a phenomenal release. Controlled well, great puzzles, decent combat, but it was that atmosphere and world building I was most impressed by. Between that and Final Fantasy Tactics, I was playing some pretty heavy games at 12 years old haha.
I forgot Tiny Tank, Jersey Devil, and Team Buddies existed until you mentioned it. Wow, those are deep memories!
This is fantastic, from the script to the editing. Brought back so many memories which I'm beyond grateful for.
Wow perfect timing, I just got into PS1 emulation and have been diving into all sorts of PS1 games, from my childhood and new ones.
Check out Tomba (Tombi in Europe).
check out Rally Cross (only the first one), a fun arcade racer
Check out MediEvil and Threads of Fate
Great shit. I was obsessed with Tai Fu. Always wanted more.
I remember Heart of Darkness! Amazing game with amazing style. :D
@@OutlawGrrl of course I would love a remaster of some kind but still keep 2D art style.
'Wild 9' is another good recommendation for PSX 👍😀
Fun stuff.
I have a physical copy and think its a great game. Reviving all the trees and trying to get the summons to max level was a good time.
Jumping Flash 2: Big Trouble in Little Muu is a childhood classic for me! Great game, super weird, and awesome soundtrack!
Agreed
Oo...i play that game for hours even figuring out how to make complete ice dragon and even half mp cost Hikewne.
'Apocalypse' for PSX is a hidden gem 🤩🥰
Yes sir, pretty dang fun, plus it's actually Bruce willis lol
I’m so glad to hear Elemental Gearbolt mentioned. I loved that game and no one I knew even had it except for me.
I loved Unholy War, was such a cool idea at the time to have isometric battlefields that go into 1v1s. Albeit some of those characters are so overpowered.
Unholy War was my jam as a kid. I will never forgive my father for selling my copy without my permission.
Im amazed to this day that the concept hasnt been explored in a pokemonesque online game
It was way too fun in PvP
I loved the Pilot Guy on the flying Motorcycle, always got goosebumps when he initiated his Kamikaze Attack xD
@Brick Boy *okay baby, here I come*
I was really hoping you might highlight “Bushido Blade” or “Wild 9” but the fact you even mentioned “incredible crisis” blew my mind.
12:50 I treat Vimm's Lair like my own little secret lol always makes me laugh when I remember tons of people know about it. Also Kingsley's Adventure is a BANGER! My 1st ever, non-pokemon, RPG.
my only gripe is that the website went down randomly
@QF Dan I've been mid download and the site goes down. I've felt your pain.
Vimms lair sucks. I prefer the megathread tbh
I spent so many hours playing 3xtreme, Firebugs (always felt like a badass when the ''put ya hands up'' was playing), Running Wild etc. thanks for reminding them, i almost forget about those..
God I love Alundra, I actually did a replay of it recently and it still holds up! I wish Alundra 2 was more like it
Still got my copy of Tron Bonne, it's an incredible charming game with a lot of variations to the gameplay, they even have a bonus optional dungeon with a optional boss, it was a fun time.
I LOVED Small Soldiers on psx as a kid. Very fun multiplayer.
Definitely. I think that I'd thr movie didn't exist, Small Soldiers the game could have easily been it's own IP with tons of lore.
Avenge me comrade!
I would give anything for a Time Crisis collection ported over for the Quest
Edit: Oh also, have you ever mentioned Pandemonium on the show? It's a 2.5D platformer I always played at my friends house as a kid and I remember it being really weird but a good game.
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN, I LOVED Jersy Devil. the intro animmation was SOOOOOO GOOOOOOD
Yeah, was hoping he'd talk about Tails Concerto.
Tigershark! Did anyone else have this ? 😂 I had so many weird games on PSX cause my dad picked them all since I was still pretty young
Tomba and Tomba 2 were the absolute tits, man. So weird but so good.
this vid was a rollercoaster of emotions , when you mentioned apocalypse i remember playing the heck out of it as a kid. but years back i lost all my games and about 5 years ago i bought a second hand ps1 so i was looking at some retro retailers for the game found it for about 15 bucks then decided i needed to check anyway went upstairs to my retro corner and found out not only did i already have it i also got the die hard trilogy.... so im gonna dissapear into my retro corner for a day or so haha
It had a decent media presence for what was ultimately a very Japanese game. I remember the full page ads in EGM and Gamepro
We definitely need more of an expansion of all the cool, weird, and mostly forgotten jrpgs on the ps1
I'm happy that I played a lot of the games that you mentioned (yeah, including Elemental Gearbolt, which was awesome!), but on the other hand, I'm sad that you missed a whole genre that was pretty popular in the PSX era; The Fighting games genre.
On PSX you could find:
- Megatudo 2096
- Cardinal Syn
- Psychic Force
- Ehrgeiz
- Destrega
- Evil Zone
And so many more.
It honestly astounds me that Alundra is thought of as a forgotten game
It was overshadwoed by Zelda and final fantasy.
Anyone remember poi poi? Great game but nobody else has heard of it 😮
Omg I’m so happy you mentioned The Misadventures of Tron Bonne! I loved that game!
Best intro absolutely!!! Those sounds when booting PS and games were so unique.
