  • Episode 70 - On this episode of Let's Read, it's just the fourth issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, which was probably on newsstands sometime in late September or early October. This issue was interesting for me because it comes right after the launch of both the Sega Genesis and the TurboGrafx-16, and therefore has launch games featured in the reviews as well as in the "fact files". The fact that Ghouls 'N Ghosts was the cover story didn't hurt, either!
    Show notes:
    - The paper turkey shown in the intro is pretty dang old. It was my grandmother's; she would put it on the the table before Thanksgiving dinner. At some point it got handed down to me and now I do the same. Figured it was appropriate since this is Thanksgiving weekend. I also really enjoy not being physically in the intro shots, so it's fun to find creative ways to avoid that.
    - I explain this at the end of the video, but I'll put it again here. Originally I wanted to do a magazine read-through to coincide with Halloween instead of Thanksgiving, but the issue that I had chosen (GamePro from October of 1990) was a real snooze-fest, so I scrapped the episode. I found this one in my box of "to be Let's Read'ed" issues and thought it would be great for Halloween due to the GnG cover, but by then it was too late.
    - I don't know this for a fact, but this feels like the longest I've ever gone between uploads to this channel. I've been less productive on YT this year, but I have also been uploading to my other channel, which amazingly some people still don't know about. There's a link if you scroll down a bit.
    - The "face cam" used in this episode is the Sony camcorder that I used to use to shoot the magazine. So I guess camera 1 became camera 2. I don't much like it because I can't get the shallow depth-of-field that makes the background nice and blurry. But it has autofocus and can record continuously until the memory card is full, so that's why I used it.
    - The noise gate on the voice track was a little aggressive. That's something that maybe 0.01% of the viewers will notice, but it bothers me.

@Ron Fiasco same here. I'm younger so read and reread early 2000s issues of EGM as a kid.
My parents couldn't buy me a GameCube, PS2 or XBox - due to financial difficulties. But I have a near encyclopedic knowledge of games from the late 90s to mid 2000s because I obsessively read EGM magazines.

I was in my mid-teens at the time. Me and a friend were avid readers of EGM. When the latest issue was released, we'd call each other with magazine in-hand and pore over every detail. Our fandom was supercharged by feeding off of one anothers enthusiasm for gaming. The 8-bit/16-bit halcyon days of console and arcade gaming were unparalleled indeed.

Random cool little story here - when I was in high school I met Steve Harris in these early EGM days at the Electronics Boutique in Yorktown mall, which is where I found the initial Electronic Game Player issues at a news stand and is in Lombard, Illinois where the magazine started. My buddy and I were there on a random school night, it was pretty dead at the mall so he was the only other customer there. We had no idea who he was until he approached us and asked if we liked videogames. I think we gave him a hesitant yes because we were probably a bit creeped out about this tall, bearded older dude talking to us, (and again, only people at the store), but after he told us who he was we were psyched because we loved the magazine. He then asked if we'd like jobs taking screencaps, which to our videogame obsessed young selves, seemed like a dream job. I was always curious about how they got the caps, so he told us about the setups they had and what we'd be working with. He gave us business cards and told us to call the office to set something up, even though he would be out of town for the next week on business. We both called, but the receptionist told us to just call back when he returned. We never followed up because while the job seemed awesome, it seemed hard to balance with high school because we'd have to work nights, we were pretty sure it probably paid crap, and we lived about a half hour away. I do sometimes wonder how my life would have been different if I had pursued this and got my foot in the door at the magazine at that nascent time at a young age, but who knows, maybe I would've become disenchanted by it and still not enjoy videogames 30 years later.

59:30 The Sega Genesis Power Base Converter.
My family ended up picking up the power base as our local toy / game store had been putting all of their master system games into bargain bins. Since we had upgraded from an NES we were able to see what the Master System had to offer on the cheap. It even worked with the 3D glasses thing so we got that cheap as well. None of the game we picked up ever really stood out as mind blowing, but trying to step back down to 8-bit after upgrading to 16-bit made that harder than you think.
I think my favorite from our late 80's pickups was Zillon. It was the closest thing the MS had to Metroid.

Love these read throughs. I have a ton of these (like the original GamePro and the Genesis vs. TB Graphics 16 EGM Blue cover). They're a wonderful trip down memory lane and I love the screen captures you have of the games that you show when talking about the games in the magazine. Game Players Magazine was one of my fav magazines as well, had a lot of PC stuff as well like King's Quest reviews or Red Baron from early 90's and late 80's.

This is the most memorable game mag I ever owned. EGM (like all other media at the time) was very pro-turbo. So seeing this pronouncement of a Genesis game being the GOAT was mindblowing. I couldn't wait to get his game, and I wasn't disappointed.

Great in depth review of the old EGM! I've got a stack of these old mags, great memories of reading through them over and over back in the 90s. Last I heard EGM only made Walmart magazines

I was 20 and in my senior year of college, I was absolutely out of the gaming scene at this time. A year later I'd upgrade from old Atari 1200XL to a new Sega Genesis and it blew me away. Such a snapshot of time, cool to see articles from Ed Semrad and Steve Harris era.

The EGM Top Score magazine was a one-off issue exclusively of tips and tricks. It was tied into their two videotape releases which were available at the time.

I appreciate this episode as well! Some cool trivia to answer about Strider, his basic sword is called the Cypher. It's based on the mixture of a Japanese Tonfa and a razor sharp broadsword. Whenever he finds a plasma charge, his sword extends like a Police Baton and then becomes the Light Sword Cypher infused with plasma particles that can cut through any material. When he finds the symbol for "Hi," then he regains a bar of health, when he finds the symbol for "Ryu," his life bar extends with an extra unit of health. During Arcade Strider 1, the other Striders will drop off Hiryu's backup units to assist like Robo-Panther, Robo-Hawk, and Mushroom aka Robo-Saucer that attacks with the plasma rings. Man I love Strider! 😄😇

    TMNT review. Difficulty: Easy
This surprised me. I think we can all agree that TMNT is far from an easy game.
Also interesting to see an add showing an unreleased NES game at 31:17 (Wild Boys).

I remember that our Aldi’s store had TONS of Tengen games they sold there, $5 a piece. I remember getting Gauntlet and Pac-Man there. Man, if I knew about Tetris back then I could have had at least 50 copies.

Very cool channel, man! I've been streaming random Master System games and ps1 demo discs, so this kind of obscure gaming culture is kinda my jam. Definitely a good find, keep it up!
EDIT: Also, I just tried out SpellCaster for the first time, and I actually was extremely intrigued by it. Not an amazing game by general standards, but so bizarre that it keeps you playing just by being so unlike anything else.

I have Volume 1 of one of those Kodak tapes. Hosted by "World Videogame Champion" Skip Rogers.
I ordered it from the Scholastic Book Club when I was in 1st Grade.
I didn't beat a single game with any of Skip's tips

Homer's still exists in Omaha, but I wasn't aware they ever sold Videogames - they're mostly known as a record shop, but looking at their website they sell other used things as well. still no mention of vidyas, though.

Sky Shark is a super great game. It has catchy music, is challenging, and after playing it a couple of times, it becomes predictable. It was fun to play when I was in 2nd and 3rd grade with my brother and my older cousin. It had super high replay value and is one of my all-time classic games. I remember that my brother and I owned sky Shark first, then we gifted my cousin the game, because he loved it so much: he lived in the same apartment complex.
