    This song has an absurd amount of backstory, its like a music theory nerd's wet dream lol
    -This is from their 8th studio album (and they had 5 live albums at the time) = 13 notes in a scale
    -It was written in 5 parts (circle of 5ths)
    -This album has 8 songs (8 notes to an octave)
    -Each song on the album is written in an ascending key (first song starts in F, next in G, etc, to Octavarium in F an octave higher than the first track)
    -Part one is said to refer to how Petrucci grew his music career, originally looking up to his idols but not wanting to emulate/rip off then, but realizing later that he just wanted to write prog all along. Abstractly, it introduces the "full circle" theme of the song ("The story ends where it began").
    -Part two doesn't directly relate anything concrete but persists the full circle theme
    -Part three was written by the drummer (Mike Portnoy at the time) and is an ode to all his influences over the years. The lyrics are mainly a gigantic running portmanteau linking various influences ranging from songs to bands to movies. Really neat to pick out all the references if you ever get a look at the lyrics.
    -Part four is titled "Intervals," there are 8 sections. Each section is a reference to a song on the album (in order) and has a hard-to-hear clip of the song playing in the background behind the lyrics. The final section refers to the current song, and "Trapped inside this Octavarium" are the lyrics summarizing the entire part
    -Part five is the grand finale, the capstone of the entire album. The 5th section of the 8th song, written mainly in 5:8 time. Reinforces the full circle theme by playing the same melody from the first section, and ends on the same note the song began (some editions have the intro to the first song of the album as a fadeout)

      Actually the second part is about LaBrie dealing with the aftermath of getting food poisoning which caused his vocal chords to suffer.

      @anthonycangelosi 2 роки тому +10

      It goes even further than that. If you pay attention from the Metropolis Part 2 album all the way to this one, they all lead into each other (I think that’s what I’m looking for).
      For example, Metropolis ends with a static noise, Six Degrees starts with that same static noise and then ends with a chord that is also used to start off Train of Thought. The last song on Train of Thought ends with a low F note on the keyboard, which starts on the album Octavarium. At the end of the song Octavarium where they say it ends where it began and the last note played is F, that means that it is in a continuous loop from there. There’s so much with all of their albums and it really is interesting to read and hear about being a music nerd.

      @@elitebelt oh no shit? I read that it loosely followed the plot of the film Awakenings which I'm not familiar with so couldn't say either way

    • @elitebelt
      @elitebelt 2 роки тому +4

      @@MrDeactivator2 It was probably written to have a dual meaning, considering how closely the lyrics resemble LaBrie's struggle recovering from the vocal damage and his many doctor visits as a result. Plus, the section being written by LaBrie himself was pretty on the nose.
      Either way, the general consensus I've seen was people saying it was a reflection on LaBrie's experience and the plot of Awakenings. Personally I think it's a bit of both with LaBrie drawing some lyrical inspiration from Awakenings. Plus, recovery from something like that could be seen as a loop in and of itself. Losing your voice and having to go through a lot of trials and rehabilitation to get back to where you previously were, after which closing off the loop and moving past the experience.

    If you want more really challenging solos, definitely give the songs from Train of Thought a shot, most notably "Stream of Consciousness" and "In the Name of God".
    Don't know if it's charted but another DT song that would be cool to see is "Blind Faith"; John Petrucci once regarded the unison solo in that song as the hardest DT solo for him to play.
