I've been to the Nikuna restaurant a few times over the last 3 weeks. It's deceptively small from the outside as the upstairs area is quite large. The paintings are wonderful and make you want to step in to them and step back in time to a Bali which was purer simpler and tourist free. The food there is good, reasonably priced and the young female staff melt your heart with their lovely smiles.
yeah I have had that happen to me. It is scary as. I think the worse this you have no idea what they really want. I love the smells of Bali. I love the sights but the smell is what gets me. When I arrive and I take a deep breath and get that bali smell I know I am home.
It's really disconcerting, isn't it? As you say, you don't know what their intention is but it's obvious they're wanting to control you. It's soon forgotten and all the good stuff is resumed. :) Thanks, Jos.
Ha! I don't remember which subscriber it was (apologies if it was yourself) but someone and their wife (it probably wasn't yourself then, Catherine) thought I reminded them of Peter so on the spur-of-the-moment I thought I'd throw it in. Good to see you, Catherine.
Thanx again Wayne… really enjoyed the information around the beautiful style.. all your interview questions and comments so relevant … the perawat was very engaging and seemed very happy to have a bule take interest in her life…. Although my Bahasa Indo is in its infancy I continue to enjoy your style of mixing it up with some English… I am learning a lot from you and look forward to my next visit …. makasi banyak teman saya
Hi Victor. thanks so much for taking interest in the little videos. I think the Balinese might be the most accommodating people for strangers just to stop and say hello - they mostly seem to enjoy it as well., Cheers.
I think Mr. Handshake may have had a couple already and was hoping to gouge you for a couple more. Those paintings were beautiful. I wonder how much they are? Millions of Rp probably.
Hi Ed. I think you're right, he was fishing a bit. I thought the cost of the paintings to be reasonable and happy to help Made in his endeavors - it's tough to make your way as an artist anywhere, I think.
I've had a similar experience in Legian . Shook my hand in a friendly manner, then tried to pull me into his shop. I quickly pulled my hand away and said firmly, "Tiduk mau " and walked off. It was all good, i can handle myself in those situations . "where's the cheese?" hahahahaha Geez haven't hear that in a while mate. Take care and always enjoy watching your video's. Salam dari kota asalmu
Hi Marisa. So very weird to see it here and not something I've witnessed before. There might be a lot of tourists coming down with Bali belly perhaps as there does seem to be a disproportionate number of meetings with nurses or nurses in training lately. :)
G'day again Wayne. I hope you're well. I've binge watched all your vids over the last few days. Love seeing your interactions with people and daily life in ubud rather than the usual vids about swings and western styled restaurants. Has got me itching to get back to Indonesia and on the road in general. Thanks for sharing your time and experiences. In return I'd like to share some of my experiences as a blind photographer/traveller. I can't post a link here but of you're interested please have a search for blurry borders blind photography Looking forward to seeing what else you get upto. Best regards, Kristan
Hey Kristen. It's amazing that you're out there traveling the world considering the terrain you'd have to navigate even on some of the footpaths - you have my respect! I'll take a closer look at your page when I have more time. Thanks, Kristen.
@fiascodagama1 as I'm sure you can relate to - footpaths are a rarity and a blessing, though often more dangerous than the road itself with holes, bbqs and other randomness! Hope you're day is going well.
It’s wonderful that you get out every morning, especially that you see how the Balinese are living. Please explain which area of Ubud this is. Thanks for another great video.
Hi Enlightenment. I'm just walking around streets that run of f Jalan Raya in Central Ubud each morning and talking to anyone who seems interested. It really is only walking in a radius of maybe 500 hundred metres of Central Ubud Palace and occasionally a bit further if I need the exercise. :)
@@fiascodagama1 Great thank you, nice to see how busy it is early in the morning. I always stay very close to Monkey Forest or the end of Jl Bisma so l don’t see the same type of activity down that end. I thought Ubud only wakes up at 10 am 🤣
My first trip to Bali in 1997, I found myself surrounded by what seemed like hundreds of sellers in blue t-shirts. Do you remember them? I became separated from my husband. One of the cheeky young males decided he would go the grope. He was rough, and he too would not let go, despite me asking him to stop. He laughed, so I did the only thing I could-I defended myself. He came off worse. I am not condoning violence, but I felt I had no choice. It was a very scary experience. A couple of locals actually came and asked me if I was ok. Thankfully this did not stop me from travelling back, and with luck, will be living there permanently soon. Another great video Wayne. Suksme mewali 🙏🙏
Hi Julia. I remember a time when women had mentioned it was quite "grabby" around Kuta - possibly when the infamous Kuta Cowboys were at the peak of their allure. So glad some locals were concerned about your well being and came to ask about how you were doing. How exciting at the prospect of potentially living here soon. Nice one! Thanks, Julia.
Hi Wayne that bubur looked delicious! Now I think I saw you struggling a few vids ago and again today with the bubur seller for your word of the day. Jam berapa = what time or what's the time. To the seller you would say buka jam berapa = what time do you open. Or tutup jam berapa = what time do you close. Jam by itself is a watch. Your chats with the food sellers are always interesting. Have you discovered nasi jingo yet?
Nasi jingo is a breakfast dish so you have to be out early to get it. Usually around 5k and at roadside stalls wrapped in banana leaf or the brown paper wrap.
It's actually pretty smart to travel with a cheap phone rather than a nice one. I remember the young kids selling leather bracelets in Kuta years ago used to circle you and you'd have to keep a bit of an eye out.
@@fiascodagama1 I collect old phones off friends & family as gifts when in Bali, used to be no issue before the import duty came in to have a few. Security wise it's best to have anything important on one phone & treat it as your passport cards & cash, locked up somewhere safe. Also screen locks of course.
Interesting to see the food vendor lady use Craft Paper to create your food to-go container. In the States that would be a Styrofoam container that would go-to landfill and not be rid of until the next dinosaur evolution.
Hi Wayne. About to start my travels and thinking about heading to Bali. A lot of people are telling me its overrated, what are your thoughts on the place?
For people to broadly generalize and say Bali is overrated doesn't really offer much, does it? Overrated for what? It also depends on why you are traveling. What are you interested in seeing or experiencing? Why are you traveling? Bali is far more than Kuta, beach clubs, or nasi goreng but the people who usually say it's overrated usually don't explore explore far. I'm living in Bali so my opinion might be biased, but no, I don't think Bali is overrated.
Hi Wayne How was the food? Yes that was a pretty uncomfortable encounter with that fella. It’s certainly out of the norm for such peaceful and polite people. You never really know peoples back story.
Hi Aly. The food was OK - not as nice as my first Burbur experience but still nice. Yeah, we never know - people have stuff we're not going to be privy to, I guess.
Oh gosh, that's very awkward when someone won't let go of the grip, and a sturdy grip, at that. Thankfully, you don't encounter this often. Because one shady person doesn't mean every Balinese person is like that, which you are obviously well aware of. You handled yourself very well in an awkward situation.
I guess it's not like he was going to drag me off into an alley or anything, but his intentions weren't pure, that's for sure. This behavior is so far removed from any other experience I've had with Balinese people, and unlikely to be repeated I'd say.
Ha! A subscriber and his wife thought I reminded them of Australian tv personality Peter Russell-clarke who used "Where's the cheese?" As a bit of a catch phrase.
@@iansmith7894 It was. i see these brown colored eggs often and haven't asked why they're such a color - one imagines they're left overnight in some kin d of sauce or have been marinated?
