I mean, of course this version is worse. It’s a live-action remake of a classic Disney film. But, a better movie that you might doubt is the Paw Patrol movie, so maybe make a video review about that movie?
@@striderjason9863 i have watched that movie an ungodly amount of times against my own will but it is a competent movie that at least wasn't entirely contained in the show's scope
I really hope you make more positive reviews\analasys in your longer-form videos. your positive reviews are my favorite and they also seem to be doing quite well, like your captain underpants review.
Nick crying over Tom Hanks had more genuine emotion than anything from the last few live action Disney remakes.

More than Pinocchio himself during the ending. Nick about to bring Tom Hanks back to life with his magical tears 😋
@@jamaribonnett4699 Why? Tom Hanks is great.
It's so weird how there have been four pinocchio adaptions this year. Almost seems like Disney were jealous and decided to nostalgia bait everyone shamelessly. Funny.

@@SparrowIZ FAKER
It's actually four, everyone always forgets the second Russian movie, Pinocchio and the water of life.
@@andreafraustoz it offended the harry potter fanbase? I might give it a watch, then!
One thing I'm against in this remake is the change from beer to root beer and no smoking. By replacing it with candy and soda, they're sending the message that kids eating candy and drinking soda=bad kids who deserve to be donkeys. At least alcohol and smoking are actual bad things -_-
In the original movie, there are active consequences to the boys’ actions. It’s very clear that the smoking, drinking, fighting and breaking things were supposed to be wrong, which is why they were punished for it.
Here? The things the kids do have no weight other than being kids doing kids things. And if they were all recruited the way Pinocchio was via the net, then that again robs them of the choice they had in the original to go.
The message is NOT that eating candy, drinking root beer, going to amusement park rides and doing fun things which are part of the game is bad.
The message is that kids need to be aware that things which are too good to be true are a scam/probably false and if they're not careful bad things can happen -- not turned into a donkey or anything like that, but still bad things can happen or it's not what they thought it was.
Parents would see an exotic Disneyland or Disneyworld like place (essentially in their own backyard which they probably never heard of before) with no rules or adults where kids can have all the candy and root beer they want, and has places where shoplifting, stealing things from each other, breaking clocks, insulting each other, and play with firecrackers is legal and can do it at will is very fishy, but the kids won't think this is fishy and if they don't suspect anything fishy bad things can happen to them.
The saying "stupid little boys" doesn't necessarily mean they're misbehaving little boys, but they're very Very Gullible.
not even eatig candy in excess!
For that they could have better remove the whole scene. At least Dumbo did't fucked it up with the elephant drunk scene.
@@EpicJoshua314 fine, those are bad thing, but did they deserved they same punishment (being donkeys FOR LIVE) as if they drank or smoked like in the original?
@@ClaudetteVioletta No, but in reality there have been cases where children or people in their late teens early 20s have been lured to someone or into their house for reasons which are not wrong, they are duped and killed. One example being John Wayne Gacy.
The message is, if a complete stranger offers you something that if you’re gullible enough will believe to be real, be careful. Nobody these kids knew had ever been to Pleasure Island and most of them had never heard of this place before or that it was very close to home, all they knew about it was from flyers or from a complete stranger. That’s not saying much. If Pleasure Island is such a wonderful place for kids to go to and so close to home then why haven’t these kids heard of it before?
Don’t talk to, take, or accept anything from a stranger.

He does, but whoever was working on that scene left it to be barely noticeable for those who are watching it for the first time

I genuinely enjoy the Honest John (the fox) design. It’s just so fucking goofy and uncanny it’s almost good. I love it.
It's a very high quality realization and I love the over the top movement too
Same
Agreed. Honest John could have been made way more important than this. He appears in the first half and is then forgotten in this remake. I loved his voice performance and movements. He had emotion!
The only other part of this movie I liked was the kid turning into a donkey. It was eerie to see it with some realism added. But yes, the original scene, while it did not scare me (barely watched the classic as a kid so I have no memory of being horrified either), was better performed and animated the erratic panic of the kid better.
Same here. It's the only good part of the film, and Keegan-Michael Key's performance was so over the top and I really enjoy it.
He looks like he belongs in Shrek. Too "realistic," but cheap CG-realistic, if that makes sense. He has big gold chains hanging from his neck, swinging all over the place but not making a sound. He used pop-culture references such as "INFLUENCER" and the worst "joke" of all..."CHRIS PINE!!!!" I wanna strangle the executives at Disney so bad, but I'd have to wait in line.
What do you expect from the company that cancelled their highest rated show in years over "being unfitting to the brand". Shit, that's what you should expect, both literally and figuratively.

A piece of sh-
Pinocchio reeeeeaaaaally straddles the uncanny valley. His puppet movements/gestures are creepy, instead of cute/quirky like in the cartoon.
One thing you forgot to say was that this live action completely missed the point. Both the og movie and book were about Pinocchio being at first a bratty and misbehaving boy, and therefore facing bad consequences for all of his actions (getting imprisoned by Stromboli, transformed into a donkey, almost dying by getting hanged (this one only happens in the book but I can obviously see why family friendly Disney would never put that))... he slowly and gradually learns from his mistakes and becomes better, and as a reward he becomes a real boy in the end. This live action completely screwed that message, as Pinocchio never does anything bad in this movie, in fact it seems that all of the bad things that happen to him just happen because "the world is evil", not because HE was the one who got himself into trouble. And that lying scene... basically according to Disney now, it's a nono showing children smoking and drinking (mind you, to show that smoking and drinking is bad!), but it's ok to practically teach kids that it's ok to lie in order to get what you want (btw that scene is ripped off straight from Shrek 2). I guess they rather wanted the message to be more about accepting yourself or some bs (which might also be the reason why Pinocchio transforming into a real boy at the end is such a subtle detail you can easily miss, and the ending was like "Pinocchio is a real boy as everyone else"). Yeah, the accept yourself message is undoubtly good, but, I'm sorry, I'm just so fuggin sick of it because we've seen it in like 1000 movies at this point, while the og Pinocchio's message being a cautionary tale about facing the consequences of your bad actions is way more original and meaningful.
Sorry for the long comment, but I just can't believe how many things did they get wrong in this hot garbage of a movie.
it feels like disney missed the entire point of the original. when pinocchio gets trapped he literally escapes _because he lies_ . so good life lesson: lie whenever you want, it doesn't matter and it can help you! and on pleasure island kids just do... what kids do. they eat candy and drink root beer, that shouldn't be punished by turning the kids into donkeys and forcing them to work in salt mines or go to the circus for the rest of their lives. in the original they actually do bad things, like drinking alcohol and smoking cigars. and pinocchio actively participates, so it makes sense for him to get the donkey ears and tail. in the remake he didn't even want to do anything. they also fucked up the scene where lampwick turns into a donkey big time. the original was absolutely fucking horrifying, it kinda scares me to this day. the remake of that scene is just a joke compared to the original. they censored the "what do i look like, a jackass?" line so poorly too, i thought it was a glitch at first. pinocchio already knows good from bad from the start, he's just a victim throughout the whole movie, so what was the point?
I actually think it would’ve been cool to have Pinocchio as an actual puppet! At least that’s something interesting and kinda different
The 1996 version starring Jonathan Taylor Thomas did do that.
the ONLY thing i'll give the 2022 remake (from what i've seen) is that Pinocchio's donkey tail and ears are wooden as well, that's a neat little detail and that's it.
What about the performances of the actors? They did a terrific job, especially Luke Evans and the actor voicing Pinocchio (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth). I really loved the Coachman's song; there's no one other than Evans who could have played the Coachman better than him.
@@EpicJoshua314 I'll say this: I haven't watched the movie. Perhaps I'm making some assumptions based on what little I've seen, but idk
I've watched several reviews on this remake (bc they're way more entertaining than the movie itself), but one thing that no one seems to comment about is how TINY this Pinocchio is! In every adaptation I've seen, Pinocchio is a life-sized boy puppet (even in the animated Disney version), thus making his transition into a real boy easier. This version of Pinocchio is either built to be a toddler or he has dwarfism.
He's a puppet which was made with no intention of coming to life. Puppets aren't supposed to be as big as a human child.
I was a bit confused by this but after seeing the original, Pinocchio's height changes throughout the movie, or the puppets are as tall as a human child, the boys and Geppetto are short, and the cage is made for a human child.
I think he's to skinny
The fact that Tom Hanks never said to Pinocchio “You. Are. A. Tooooooyyyy!”
I just love how every UA-cam film reviewer imaginable is coming together to trash this movie.
I know right. Like FFS 🤦🏻
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this wasn't horrible.

Life lesson: never make a live action depiction of a beloved piece of media
I mean it has worked before in the past (the 2003 Peter Pan is a great example of a live-action adaptation that worked so well), but Disney is just rehashing their classics into these live-action cardboard cutouts at this point.
Besides Disney, live action MOVIES based on cartoons at least have become less common. But live action adaptations in general of "cartoon-y looking" children's media have felt more common than ever and most of them from what I hear in reviews are horrible! Riverdale, Fate the Winx Saga, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Fairly Odder, Tom and Jerry, the live action Powerpuff Girls 🤮. And I'm not confident about the live action Avatar show either.
There's a live-action Powerpuff Girls?

What's more disgusting about this movie, is that the Zemeckis directed it.
What makes it disgusting:
Disney Shutdown Imagemovers studio, which was founded by Zemeckis, which was actually trying to push forward CGI tech and art.
It's especially ugly when we remember the recent Disney's Rescue Rangers 2022, where the movie itself tried imitating Zemeckis' "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", then also reference Zemeckis' CGI Imagemovers, claiming it was crap, and thinking they are better.
I suppose Zemeckis is either tied up with contract to work for Disney, or that he just came directing it for a paycheck, without any sense of self-respect or pride. Either way, that's very disappointing to see such director's fall who made awesome and experimental movies to this...

I kept repeating “this is horrible” throughout the movie, and it even gotten to the point where I just wanted it to end already!
I felt something similiar. I usually am pretty forgiving of mediocre or average movies. I liked the Dumbo live-action, for example, but this movie? In the first half I struggled to keep watching. I genuinely felt less than entertained. Often I can be at least entertained by some weird scenes or whatever. But this movie was so bland in the first half. And the second half, eh, it picked up the pace at least.
Let's face it, once Disney runs out of animated classics to remake. They're gonna remake the remakes.
Or they're gonna make live action movie of sequels like Peter pan 2, Cinderella 2, Tarzan 2 etc. Might as well do that when you are lazy and not creative anymore.
Maybe when Disney runs out of animated classics to remake, they’ll remake their live-action classics, like 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Treasure Island, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, The Strongest Man In The World, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, etc.
Or they’re going to remake both Tarzan and Tarzan 2, while also turning them into a clunky, poorly written live action serial..
I think one of the biggest flaws amongst all the others of this movie is the morals.
At least in the original movie they told you that lying was bad, and that drinking and smoking or other such things are bad, but like everything else they had to ruin those too.
When Pinocchio is in the cage, he uses his long nose to reach the key and escape, and in pleasure island, kids are shown eating candy and drinking root beer. So basically the movie is just telling kids not to do kid-like things like eating candy, and also tells them to lie to their advantage.
Such good morals Disney.
Bruh at this point Disney may actually stop making Disney remakes. I’ve gotten a Pinocchio 2022 hate video notifications every 3 hours since it came out 😂
Tom Hanks will now visit you in your nightmares

Disney:Money
The best Pinocchio will for ever the one in Shrek no cap
Pixar is carry as always
The one legit complaint I think there is now is that Pinocchio has no arc. He only lies so Jiminy cricket can save him.
Disney should really stop banking so much on previously successful movies in their old animation line up all because of their belief that nostalgia sells. I mean, a person can only wear rose tinted glasses for so long without getting nauseous.
This is probably the 10th video essay about this movie I’ve seen bug I just can’t get enough of them
I'm more excited at the guillermo one cause as far as the trailer goes you could tell they made it from the heart and actually takes time to interpret how pinocchio should be
the point of live action is to turn the characters from the animated version, real. so, why can’t they at LEAST have a real FISH😭😭😭😭😭
A good point I've seen a lot of reviews make on live action Pinnochio is the fact the main character learns NOTHING. He's already too good to be true, doesn't want to break the rules, isn't even tempted to do anything bad, he just gets carried away in his own movie.
Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio is far by the best Pinocchio of this year, I don’t know how to explain, but it just is and I hope no one thinks otherwise.
2:26 dawg what 💀
One thing I will give the remake is this. it gave birth to a lot of internet reviews saying how good the original was. I feel like I have grown more appreciation for the original because of it. So, take that for what it is worth.
6:56 even in the "good" there's plenty of bad. They removed all of the actually bad things from the movie. Smoking, beer, everything. The only thing they kept was billiards. The one thing that actually could have been updated. Since back in the day it was a gambling game, now its just a regular game for all ages.
I mean literally just make it a slot machine instead, gets the point across better. I mean if they could somehow make it lootboxes it would actually teach a lesson but, kinda jarring. Dates the movie and all.
Disney forget why they were loved. It’s because they brought wonders, magic, and imagination. We used it to escape reality and now they’re trying to make it into something more realistic.
Pinocchio's realistic wooden cgi lips are truly one of the VFX moments of all time
so far no one is talking about how at the end when fantine says goodbye to pinocchio she and sabine talk at the same time which shouldn't be possible which means that something magic in pinocchio affected sabine and thus there is now a new magic puppet person in the movie verse
Finally! Someone mentions his eyes! They look so awful why can't they have more depth like where are his eye lids and and eyelashes
You know what's ironic about all these "live action" remakes? It's that Disney are breaking their own genius animation rules (used to give life, movement and character) and aren't being translated into these films. They just end up giving us uninteresting, bland looking tat.
SUPER excited for the long format stuff. Started watching you and Breadsword a long time ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. Love the content!

i o think its hilarious that disney rushed out a live action remake to distract the world from del toro's movie and remind everyone that 'they did the story best' but instead they made a shit movie that tarnished their version and now the world is even more interested in the stop motion movie

Imagine Disney remaking a movie that's already remaked.
Pleasure Island in the original is vastly superior lmao. The new one is definitely not a good change.
It looks like something out of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.
It’s almost like Disney wanted to do what The Last Airbender did. Only with the vast majority of their movies.
It's funny to see how quickly the rotten tomato critics turned on Live Action remakes as soon as there's one that isn't immediately connected to their childhoods. Better late than never, I guess, but I wish they were already on board with The Lion King so we could stop this shit sooner
They were.
Disney went with it anyway.
Gotta love how every movie review I’ve seen for this remake has a reminder for Del Toro’s adaptation.
Not complaining, I’m really looking forward to it 👍
The 1940 version still holds up: plenty of heart, an endearing main character, and gorgeous animation. It has dark moments, yes, but that certainly isn’t a flaw. It’s worth a watch if you haven’t seen it.
The remake mostly goes through the motions of the original. It reuses character designs, whether or not they translate well into 3D (they don’t). They add in extra fluff that bogs the plot down and even screws with the morals the original was going for. And, of course, it is uncanny as hell. Disgraceful.
I would love for the Del Toro version to turn out good, but I have no hope for it. One, it’s Netflix; two, it’s been promoted as “politically charged.” No, thank you. I’ve had enough of Hollywood screaming about politics to last me four lifetimes.
