- Watch Kelly tie the streamer that put his name on the map: The Zoo Cougar. This fly has no weight and is intended to be fished just below the surface of the water. The flat head, thick collar, and mallard flank wing make the Zoo Cougar incredibly light so that every current that touches it makes it flutter from side to side. It was designed to fish with a jerk-strip retrieve and is the single best producer for all sizes of trout that Kelly has ever produced.

Great tutorial. You do a superb job of teaching and explaining so anyone can learn to tie your flies. I can sit and watch them for hours. Thank you for all of your contributions to the fly fishing community.

Great video as always, I always look forward to your expertise! I started tying about the same time I started hunting. My dad always had me save feathers for fly tying. It’s also good to note you need late season birds with no pin feathers. CDC is another feather I always pull, you can get great CDC from the giant Canadas we shoot here in MN. Tight lines!

Thanks Kelly, I remember how amazed I was when I saw this fly in a magazine article many years ago. Muddlers, Dalhberg Divers and the Zoo Cougar. Weren't you going to call it the "Madonna", then someone said it paced back and forth like a caged cougar? Great piece of work. Thanks for all these tutorials. My teeth are getting kinda long too! ;-)
A few years ago I accidentally hooked a 23/24 inch brown on a Zoo Cougar. Don't worry, I did manage to shake it off before I got it to the boat...

A reminder of good fundamentals with each fly Kelly ties. I think cutting the calf tail in the opposite direction was the best tip for me. I've definitely lost more than a few of my calf wings.

Hi, good tip about the Mallard feathers. I get most of my tying feathers from “Road Kill”, annoys the hell out of my wife! The Pukeko feathers are best fresh, we have heaps of Possoms killed on the road but the one to look out for are black cats. Their skin and hair are just the best for night flies and for making mouse flies.

Another cracking little pattern, better camera work this time round too with good close ups, (no digging at the camera man for his previous work lol). Great hair explanation Kelly, this has helped me out abundantly when using deer hair, love the stuff but was always a pain in the ass to use and a great tip as well regarding removal of static with the dryer sheets.
Best fly of all for south Florida bass and peacock. I tie it with a full loop weed guard because the habitat demands it

Hy Kelly, I was wondering if you could "trim" some mallard feathers with scissors if the feathers are " not off by much"??
Would a wooden deerstacker cut down on the static electricity? also that tip on the opposite 45 degree angle cut for the calf tail was awesome. I'm going to start using that when I tie my gotcha flies.

I shoot my own mallards and collect the flank feathers. How do I dye them or do I just use them as they are naturally???
Thanks for the great pattern and the video! But did I miss it? What is the purpose of the mallard feather? When does feathers are so difficult to get, there must be something to them, right? Does the curved shape that the feathers provide give the fly a special movement?

Something I always wondered about the Cougar.. Is the fact that its tied on a down eye hook important? Ive been tying em on regular ring eye hooks

tip that nobody will read. after you've completed the fly and before you start shaping the head, use a vacuum to suck out the lose hairs and help shape the head and stand up the hair you want to cut. This will make the whole process easier and more accurate. also get a good CPM 3v steel pocket knife a strop with a spray on 0.1 micron diamond honing compound and you wont need to buy a billion of those stuid razor blades. You can cut dozens of flies on that CPM 3v steel blade before you need to sharpen it and to sharpen it just strop it back and forth on a leather piece glued to a bit of smooth flat wood and you'll be so fking sharp you an literally split a hair down the middle.

Just one question 🤔do you use a lot of fly backing in a reel or no backing at all ?
I fill it is so my line is at the top of the reel, but not for the backing. When I can get it I use 100lb and put about 40 yards on. Been having trouble finding it lately.

Brent, the big hen brown in the middle is one I found dead downstream of here, held together pretty well for being dead a week in high temps. Smelliest fish I ever did. The little brown on the left and big Brookie are just carvings I did for decoration.Thanks for watching, KG

While this question doesn't apply to the Zoo Cougar, it does apply to the Mini-Dungeon and your other articulated flies. I'm sure you've covered this question in one of your much earlier videos, or one of your DVDs, but here' the question: Why use a different size hook for the front of the articulated fly (a smaller hook) and a size larger for the rear hook? Does it make it track better? Better hook-ups? Other reason? Thank you.

Dominique, you can use one if they are good. I only use two when I have one that is not that great and feel I need a little more support, on the ones you received you should be able just use one. thanks, Kelly

You talk of centering the cuts for straight tracking , i say off centered tracking looks like a wouded / dying baitfish which would trigger strikes...just my opinion
A zoo cougar reminds me of a biffle bug in the water. Sweet baby jeebus did some dude just mention a conventional bait on a Galloup video? Ha.
Is the zoo cougar any good with snappers?
The teeth would shred it. It is excellent for snook if tied in white. Also splendid for Florida bass

I tied mine with a forest green head and natural colored mallard. Oh well.
How do company's that produce all of the deer, and elk hair, possum hair, rabbit dubbing, and all the other natural tying materials get the materials? Are the animals farmed and then slaughtered? Are they hunted? Quite frankly I really don't care how they get the fur and feathers as long as the meat isn't being wasted. Does anyone have any insight on this?
Brian, There are a lot of different ways.Deer for example are mostly from deer processors that process the meat of hunted animals and then they sell the skins to the distributors who have then tanned. Same with a lot of game birds and ducks. Marabou comes from processed turkeys, and the high quality necks are grown just for their feathers but then the meat is sold as animal food, at least that is what I have been told on the roosters. On the lower grade necks they are by product of food birds and the necks and feathers are then sold to us, they can come from all over the world, hence Indian necks and Chinese necks.
