Tying The Sump with Kelly Gallloup

  • Kelly came up with this pattern for the Jackson Hole One Fly Competition that takes place every year on Idaho’s snake river. The flies are not allowed to be bigger than a Size 6 with a 3X long shank for this contest, so he needed a fly that looked big on a smaller hook. The grizzly hackles give it the barring in the tail and the grizzly marabou on the wing give it the desired profile and bulk that I like in a big fish fly.

    I have never been a streamer tyer or fisherman. You are rapidly converting me after sixty plus years of tying and fishing small stuff.

    Really happy to see you making these videos again; you cover the details and techniques better than anyone. I make a special trip to your shop from VA once to twice a year on my regular MT fishing trips. Kelly was nice enough to tie a fly with me, and it was a great experience.

    Just tied my first sump 2 weeks ago. Went off your recipe in your new book. Excited to fish these.
    Question : you ever going to get Johnny at the bench to tie his kill whitey?!? You can harp on him for a change haha

    Awesome, thanks for sharing. This looks just like a small perch. Here in Northern Europe we fish a lot for brown trout with small perch imitations.

      Pasi, You know I have have been a taxidermist most of my life and one of the most common fish I found in big trout were perch, no matter what river, second only to sculpin. Never thought about how this could be a perch but I think your right. Thanks, Kelly

    This is something I raised with Kelly once, the blood sport aspect of large streamer fishing. And his response was that he was OK with the damage done to the fish by fishing for trout with extremely large flies. Fishing is not pet ownership it is a blood sport, and it is rather amazing how small a hook can blind a fish, and we are all pretty much going to maim a fish now and again.
    It is also amazing the size of Irons you can use with Bass and rarely seriously wound them.
    But it is great to see a fly of this type put forward. +1

    Is there a streamer that can be tied with a single material -- just thread and one material? Asking for a competition our fly club will hold in Sept 2023.

    Hey Kelly, the great Bob Clouser recommends that you super glue the hook shank first then set your eyes, gluing the thread wraps later will not weld the eyes to the hook, just fyi

    Start at about 12:30 or so if you actually want to see this fly being tied. You can always watch again if you want to know why.

    How would the Sump work with the hook riding up? Other than flipping the dumbbell eyes, would you do anything different in how you tie this fly?

    I dont understand how you can do eyes with gsp, even with wax. If im tying a fly with eyes and gsp ill tie the eyes in with a normal flat waxed thread, whip finish, then come in with the gsp. I either have spinning eyes or cut eyes if i use gsp.

    6:21 “Shut up. Dog interference.” Hahhhahaha....Kelly your the man and I love all of your videos. I tired my my first zoo cougar thanks to your videos and now I’m doing the Sump! I live in Reno Nevada and fish the Truckee River constantly. What 3 streamers would you have with you if you were on the Truckee? Thanks man! Keep up the awesome videos!

      Correct me if I'm wrong on this guess. Judging by the very contrasting intents of design of these three flies. Barely Legal, Peanut Envy and Sex Dungeon.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 4 роки тому

      Sex Dungeon is something that can be used for close quarters, river bankside pocket water searching. That is, fly which may exist only feet away from where one is standing. Perhaps around boulders and architecture that might exist, and provide useful ambush territory.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 4 роки тому

      Looking at Barely Legal streamer pattern, I am looking at a fly for the exact opposite situation. No current, no architecture. Perhaps large expanse of relatively calm and open water. A different kind of ambush of bait fish, by hunting species of fish.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 4 роки тому

      Then I am looking at the Peanut Envy. I am seeing a streamer fly now, that just is not designed like the other two are (close quarters pocket, or longer cast into the feature-unknown expanse). I am looking at a fly design in the Peanut Envy, that wants to live inside the river flow and current. A fly that the hunting fish cannot just ambush in open flat water, or in smaller constrained pockets or bank side shallows. When I see the Peanut Envy, it wants to swim. It wants the hunting fish to be willing enough to put up the chase. Instead of waiting for the 'easy meal' to be presented to it.
