Took my husband and his ex so long to divorce, and they were like you and your ex-- completely amicable and agreed on everything beforehand. If you ask me, all that paperwork should be done before you get married (basically a pre-nup) and a divorce should be as easy as getting a marriage license is now.
@@the_once-and-future_king. I’m in Quebec, not America. We needed to have a notarized document prepared, essentially saying “yeah, we agree that we’ve split our assets” but in legalese. That’s where most of the money went - to the notary. In theory we could have done in ourselves, but after bashing my head against the instructions for two weeks, I realized I needed a professional. The divorce filing fees were only about a hundred dollars, plus another 40 to get a formal copy of our marriage certificate, which we realized we didn’t have. A ridiculous waste of money to do the notarized document, if you ask me, but needs must.

Depends on the state. Eight states still have Common Law marriage, including Texas. Live together for a certain length of time, usually five or seven years, and the state considers you married. Isn't the law fun?
Found that out the hard way with my room mate Doug, lived together in LA for five years, next thing we know we get a letter in the mail from the state congratulating us along with a hefty tax bbill. We were both straight guys with girlfriends, but the law was the law and we have been happily married ever since.

I think marriage should just be phased out in general. Would not being married to this person that you've been with for 20 years change anything about your relationship? No true love needs no contract. For those that it is not true love only does marriage make them fall harder into the pit of despair.

Before my wife passed my marriage license gave me the ability to make medical decisions when she wasn't able. My sister turned 40 this year. Still married to the guy she dated in high school. Quite literally the only couple I know which had such a relationship last more than a couple of years out of high school. It is a remarkable oddity, a statistical anomaly, something. As its not that you don't see this anymore... its that you don't really see it period. But I guess every rule has exceptions.

@@r5t6y7u8 Even more exceptional are those who stay together out of more than some sense of obligation or honor or whatnot. I.e. those people who still truly wish to be together from the bottom of their hearts. My sisters relationship is like that. I actually know a couple who recently got married. It's the third marriage... for both of them. It is amazing how optimism can overrun practical logic.
eh, most people just partner up because it is literally psychologically damaging to be alone (hence solitary confinement being ruled as torture and demonstrably traumatic). Society isolates us all so much when we are adults (famously difficult to meet and make friends after 30) that a not insignificant amount of the populace shacks up with people they can barely stand and might even hate just to avoid being alone. The sickness of a social species forced in an individualistic social framework.
This was funny. Even though I'm happily married and things are actually better than the first few years. I know people always say don't get married . I respect that. But for those of you who want to, work on yourself first then choose wisely. When it works, it really is amazing.

The problem isn't really monogamy it's thinking that your partner is supposed to fulfill every emotional need, when in reality ur supposed to have like...friends and close family and stuff lol
indeed. And it is the atomized society we live in (plus capitalism turning all public 3rd spaces into paywalled commodities) that makes it so impossible to make and maintain friendships through adulthood, and consequently gets people feeling like the only thing that can make them happy is romantic partnership (and then blame those partners when they are still miserable under capitalism)

And at this point the only thing that ever makes me feel truly happy all the way to my soul is taking care of my niece. I wish with all my heart that I could have a family of my own. But due to the social pressure to sign the innately abusive marriage contract that robs the participants of their exclusive right to the products of their labor, among other things, there are no women at the intersections of 'attracted to me', 'don't demand the marriage contract', and 'is a functional human being'.

I never found out the exact number, but a former coworker said she'd been married and divorced so many times she could no longer change her name on her Social Security card.
I remember while watching Marriage Story with my husband, I literally had to pause the movie after their huge dramatic argument and said "I need a moment to digest bc I have never in my life felt such a concentrated form of anger and hatred from another person." (and my parents have by no means been an ideal couple) A lot of the awful & messy divorces I've seen have been between two awful & miserable people who would happily tell you all about their misery at the hands of their awful partner, but couldn't see an ounce of their own awfulness even if it slapped them in the face.
I had to end a bunch of relationships because they couldn't see that they had any flaws or fault of their own. They were the victim, and everything that was wrong was external to them. It made any form of progression in the relationship impossible. When you think that, you dont take responsibility for anything. It explained alot, and It was very subtle and took about... 8 years to really become a problem. Hilarious. But when it was happening, and I was trying to resolve the issues and hitting a brick wall because of that deep rooted attitude, I was like... this is what people in divorces keep describing to me. It takes two active, willing, engaged, responsible, and accountable participants to form a relationship long term. If even one isnt doing it, it cant work. I think thats where the stat comes from. People being lazy, and just not taking responsibility for their lives.
I live in the UK, and I once read a joke that was claimed to date from mediaeval times, which summed up what lawyers are like: Two men are arguing about who owns a pig. They both go to a lawyer to get the argument settled. The lawyer says each man owns half of the pig. Then he takes the pig as his fee.
Agreed 100%. It's the part about getting old and having no one around to help you out when you start getting sick and weak that needs figuring out. Right now the plan is to just fall down, break a hip, and lay there and die.
He was not exaggerating those fees. Imagine how helpful it is to split up over never having enough money. That's right. You end up with two rents, two sets of bills, and all those legal fees to pay. And, so long as you have at least one kid, you'll still be fighting non-stop forever.

I know there are legit one-sided reasons and legit mutual reasons for divorce. But I honestly think people expect life to be late constantly perfect and both sides in a marriage or any relationship have to just learn give and take and to work through tough times and to grow. I think people expect everyone to conform to themselves more than meeting in a mutual middle ground. Like I said I get it there or some relationships that definitely shouldn't be or somebody needs to get out before they get hurt kind of thing. That makes sense like got to have an avenue for that. My grandparents have been married this year for 66 years and I know that they didn't always get along but I'm glad they didn't just say 'well it was tough let's just chuck it all'. Bill Burr did make a great comment though in his Red Rock special about how If you look at men that are in relationships with women and other women who are in relationships with women, there is a kind of worn down/exhausted look they have, well guys that are in relationship with guys are the happiest folks around it seems.
I'm all for Shacking Up, especially if one has already been married and divorced and has kids. Second and subsequent marriages can screw your kids out of their inheritance, because if you die before your 2nd spouse does, that spouse gets it all, leaving your kids with nothing unless you've provided for them through trusts and such with the help of an attorney. However, that rebound spouse will still get all the family heirlooms, including the gun collection your great-grandfather started that you planned to leave to your son and the jewelry or art collection ypu planned to leave to your daughter. And if the step-parent decides to be an even BIGGER asshole, just out of spite (and they quite often do), your kids won't even get the family photographs you've taken and collected over the years. There may even be a beloved, old, family pet that simply "vanishes" without a trace or a decent explanation. I truly and firmly believe that remarrying is one of the shittiest things you can do to your children. MUST you REALLY have that piece of paper that ties you to a step-parent with hundreds of feet of red tape? Remember folks ~ Blood is thicker than water, and you never TRULY know someone. Didn't you ALREADY learn that with your ex?! Don't gamble on family treasures or your children's inheritance just for a sheet of paper that will likely be FAR more trouble than it's worth, and far more costly to have revoked than you can imagine. The "NEW" WILL wear off, just like it did the first time. When that time comes, if you avoided signing that contract, your arm will get sore from patting yourself on the back.
Been married, she cheated, got divorced. She literally got our kids and everything else except our debt, I'm still paying our debt off 11 years later. Men rarely win in divorce, even when you can prove your wife cheated and is an alcoholic. Life is crazy lol.
This is why im shutting down andd leaving society. I feel like its being a masochist. I dont like it so why am i am i tolerating it. Its like an abusive relationship.
You were the primary bread winner, correct? OF COURSE YOU LOST MORE IN THE DIVORCE. It's just logic you donkey. If a woman made more, she would lose more in the divorce. That's how it works
lol maybe it depends on the state, my funemployed ex emptied our apartment and our bank account when I told him I was leaving him and they made me pay him child support despite the fact our child wasn't even living w/him but alone in a new house his mother bought him, $500/month garnished from my paychecks. I guess the universe balances out, if it makes you feel any better.
I was a divorce attorney for years and the honest truth is that 99 percent of the divorces I saw dragged out were because of custody issue in which I would objectively say the mother was being irrational and trying to keep the child away from the father. I've seen husbands being shitheads when it comes to concealing assets, etc. But the big time consumer and fee generator in most cases is mothers trying to gatekeep their children.
@@denizmergen418 Yeah, it is. Don't get me wrong, it's not all mothers, but I have yet to see a father try and go for anything other than 50-50 timeshare or continue to file motions on custody for this or that reason.
I do research on custody disputes. I can confirm that a lot of cases concern mothers wanting to keep the fathers away from their children. Usually, the mothers try to convince the courts that the father is an unfit parent, while the justice system (where I live) uses concepts that no-one understands or even have a clue on what it means. Also, there are other feminist organizations that work hard to help these women. The whole thing is awful.
That makes me so mad. The car can't decide where it wants to live. The child can. As soon as the child can speak ask them. Fighting for shared custody when the child doesn't even want to see one parent makes no sense, just as the other way around. We treat children as if they don't have their own opinion, meanwhile every child I met knew damn well which was their favorite parent or if they loved both the same. Of course this shouldn't be the end of the discussion, but the child's wishes should at least be considered.
@@freethinker3083 they charge at least $20k each case and many people with non-complex divorce cases (and higher intelligence) could do much of it themselves if given access to the same boilerplate forms the lawyers charge $300-$400 per hour to have their non-lawyer staff fill out. Don’t get me wrong, divorce attorneys have their place such as in complex cases or where children are involved and there is an abusive psycho ex spouse. It’s just that many divorce attorneys prey on unsuspecting people and scam them until they have dried up all assets. I have met people that have spent $120k on a divorce lawyer. Don't get married folks. Just keep being in the relationship marriage is just getting a piece of paper that says what you already have is legally enforceable
That is until your parents keep nagging you guys to tie the knot, or you have kids and they don't want the stigma of being bastards on them. Happened to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. For about a decade into their relationship, they had kids together including several adopted ones. It was their kids who finally convinced them to get hitched. And about two years into their marriage, their relationship had deteriorated and their messy divorce is still ongoing.
Keep calm and treat it like a Chinese finger trap. Only way you’ll make it out without scars is with radical acceptance and remembering you love them still regardless of situation. I got married at the fashionable age, trusting the myth completely. Divorced after the fashionable period. My ex was entirely reasonable, I still think the split was fair to both of us. I was incredibly lucky. But still, 25 years later, it's "never again". Never get married, younglings. The odds are poor, the risk extreme. Even in the unlikely event that the split is fair (at the mercy of a politically correct court) and amicable (at the mercy of someone who doesn't love you any more), the emotional, social and financial devastation is appalling. Don't do it. Just don't. If you need God or the state to get involved, you haven't got what it takes. If you don't need them involved, it's still an unjustified and unjustifiable gamble, and you still haven't got what it takes. Just don't. Even slightly. Ever.
And if you have kids it’s actually more beneficial on taxes if they assume the mother is single, even though both parents live in the same house, at least in my country.

You could pay more for car insurance 4. Your spouse’s credit could negatively impact your loan terms Still largely beneficial from a money standpoint
It's so they can keep adding to their wealth. We've created a system where changing husbands is like flipping houses, it keeps making one person wealthy no matter the condition it's left in. 😂
The idea of love marriages is a relatively new concept. Historically, marriage is a business arrangement meant to solidify/improve family lineage and assets. Also, forever is reasonable when people die in their 30s LOL. Everyone should have a contract/prenup. It's possible to have several great loves in a lifetime. Embrace that!

But after thousands of crappy first dates that went nowhere, I didn't connect to any of those ladies. Pandemic started, and I got a dog. My emotional fulfillment and companionship needs are met with having a dog. So for women the only thing that they can offer that I don't already have is sex: and honestly I could take it or leave it. If you ask me, all that paperwork should be done before you get married (basically a pre-nup) and a divorce should be as easy as getting a marriage license is now.
Still $1600 too much. $100 each for the clerk to check the forms are filled out correctly, and the judge to stamp them.
@@the_once-and-future_king. I’m in Quebec, not America. We needed to have a notarized document prepared, essentially saying “yeah, we agree that we’ve split our assets” but in legalese.
I think marriage should just be phased out in general. Would not being married to this person that you've been with for 20 years change anything about your relationship? My sister turned 40 this year. Still married to the guy she dated in high school. I actually know a couple who recently got married. It's the third marriage... for both of them. It is amazing how optimism can overrun practical logic.
eh, most people just partner up because it is literally psychologically damaging to be alone (hence solitary confinement being ruled as torture and demonstrably traumatic). I have been divorced for 15 years. This is more accurate than people could ever know unless they have gone through divorce themselves.
Right on with that one! I've been divorced since 2008 as well. Once around was enough for me.
Yeah no one gets divorced and says "Yup! Totally my fault!"
Always the other one's fault
@@colinrussell2017 Actually, I did. It was totally my fault. Even told the kids that.
@hishenmathurin2844 man, talking with other women online.
@@ahapka Well Im willing to bet your problem wasnt a total aversion to taking responsibility then.
Thats a normal cause though.
The more extravagant the wedding, the higher the chance for divorce.
I live in the UK, and I once read a joke that was claimed to date from mediaeval times, which summed up what lawyers are like:
Two men are arguing about who owns a pig. They both go to a lawyer to get the argument settled. The lawyer says each man owns half of the pig. Then he takes the pig as his fee.

You don't need to be married for your children to be screwed out of inheritances, that's something that wills are for.
My divorce was amicable, probably because we did not lawyer up
And the judge STILL tried to poison the well 😂
Been married, she cheated, got divorced. She literally got our kids and everything else except our debt, I'm still paying our debt off 11 years later. Men rarely win in divorce, even when you can prove your wife cheated and is an alcoholic. Life is crazy lol.

You were the primary bread winner, correct? OF COURSE YOU LOST MORE IN THE DIVORCE. It's just logic you donkey. If a woman made more, she would lose more in the divorce. That's how it works
You should have hired HH&H.
Sorry, dude. Yeah, another good example for not getting married - just find a woman you hate and buy her a house ;o)
lol maybe it depends on the state, my funemployed ex emptied our apartment and our bank account when I told him I was leaving him and they made me pay him child support despite the fact our child wasn't even living w/him but alone in a new house his mother bought him, $500/month garnished from my paychecks.
Facts
Sad

Ever.
Quick tip to not get divorced. Don’t get married. There are virtually no benefits in doing it.
Saves money, for sure. Sink a pretty penny tying that knot only to burn a pile of cash untangling it.
And if you have kids it’s actually more beneficial on taxes if they assume the mother is single, even though both parents live in the same house, at least in my country.
Realistically, couldn’t you just do all the stuff a monogamous married couple does with marriage? It’s pretty much just a contract.
Never get married. Saves you a ton of money and heartache. 😅
1. Social Security benefits
2. Tax breaks
3. Cheaper car insurance
4. Cheaper health insurance
5. Keep more of your home’s sale price
6. Retirement perks
7. You can “gift split” and save on taxes later in life
Cons
1. Filing jointly could launch you into a higher tax bracket
2. Filing jointly could raise your student loan payments
3. You could pay more for car insurance
4. Your spouse’s credit could negatively impact your loan terms

Embrace that!
marriage was created to put female hypergamy in check with paternal assurance. You see, they understood women well prior to 20th century gynocentrism which turned marriage into an expensive charade that only serves female interests.
People didn't die in their 30s. Anyone surviving their first five years on earth had a good shot at making it past 60.
@@legrandliseurtri7495 Sources? Published papers? Ill grant that infant mortality rate was higher in the paleolithic, but so was tooth infection. Her remark about people dying in their thirties was the only accurate thing she said
@@gravelpit5680 It's not a secret my dude, search it yourself. You'll find it more difficult to find sources that confirm the false idea that people died at 30.
@@gravelpit5680 Why tf would you need "published papers" on something as trivial as how statistic works - were your requirements as high for accepting this "dying in 30s" garbage? Circa 5/10 children dying before reaching 5 wrecks any lazy stat of average life expectancy and it requires infantile tier research to confirm it.
Not to mention a short session with _any_ registry of medieval catholic parish can show it was not "paleolithic issue", but more like pre-industrial.
Me and myself realised after 50 years that whatever this was, wasn't working out. HHH represented us both. Myself took me for everything I had, and now my inner child gets twice the gifts at birthdays and holidays. I asked if HHH could at least let me have some petty revenge against myself, but it turned out myself had already hired them with the same plan - so HHH agreed to take my revenge case, told me to meet them in an alley behind some shady club, and took my kidneys (and liver, and spleen, and a few vertibrae) because once myself took all y stuff I hadn't been able to pay HHH in time. You don't get that level of commitment from those "more affordable" divorce lawyers.
Personally, I think it should cost at least as much to get married as divorce. That way people will think about things a longer amount if time. And I am saying this after a happy marriage for over 35 years. We are still happy but its not always easy.
Hire a wedding planner for a big formal wedding and yes, getting married will cost as much or more as the divorce will a couple years later.
*repeat customers* had me dying
I only had 1 girlfriend in life and that was 10 years ago in college. Honestly though: I've learned a few things: sex isn't as exciting as advertised. I often get incredibly bored. I thought there was something wrong with me so I hired a few "professionals" to give me an ultimate sexual experience. Honestly still bored. It was a little bit enjoyable, but I also couldn't wait for it to be over. My sex drive isn't very high. So what I did look for when dating was good emotional companionship... hoping that my sex drive would increase once I found someone I connected deeply enough to. And not having to deal with the hecticness of dating keeps my stress levels low. I don't get lonely either: my dog provides a good friend in that respect too, and I get enough socialization through my close friends. I have a lower social need than most people so I'm content and fine.
Ideally it would be great to fall in love with a girl. But that's not going to happen in my lifetime. I've moved on and found happiness in my own way.
Have you considered that maybe girls aren’t your thing?
@@free22or maybe just sex isn't his thing? It's perfectly okay to not be into sex. And it's normal for sexual desire to fluctuate. Sex isn't the only reason to desire romantic companionship either.
@@astrea79 No one said it wasn’t okay to not to be into sex.
And people make fun when women decide not to get married and have a dog instead. Dogs are great companions and very loyal.
@@yessalady5003 The problem is the women who have 11 cats. Dogs are man's best friend!
Loved the actors!
When it comes to family law...the couple and the attorneys are often equally to blame for dragging things out.
The lawyers and judges are all part of the scam to get as much money from you as possible. Now you see why women don’t want to get with average joe? Because he has nothing to take in divorce
These videos are how I get half my information. So terribly useful and hilarious to watch.
I like that petty, vindictive people, have to pay more because they're never satisfied, and feel they're owed more than they deserve.
*Blows up doll* "Yeah thats right hun im having an affair! Im glad you found out....atleast she loves me, in a way you never understand. See you in court."
Divorced quick and legally. That was 13 years ago. Had nothing to give financially...which was to my benefit. The hilarious part is that she was trying to get back with me shortly after. Tried it once and never again. I feel truly sorry for this generation.
The Beanie Baby reference is gold. That actually happened when people thought they were worth something.
