I used to make commercials for a living. Some of my clients were personal injury attorneys. One of them used to do divorces. They switched because they said "divorces were making us lose our faith in humanity." People are so awful to each other during divorces that even their lawyers wanted out.

My ex found a decent mediator. We are mostly amicable and hashed out most things ourselves, and the mediator was able to help get us over a few important disagreements (by talking to us separately in different rooms, so we would stop rolling our eyes at each other 😬 and focus with her on what was really critical to our needs.)
It saved a bundle: $3000 total (split between us.).
However, her legal aid was terrible-typos, misunderstandings, mixing up clients’ paperwork, and the expectation to have it all done in a single session made completing the process longer and much more painful than necessary.
Also, the legalese is terrible and threatening in itself. And, I had lookup multiple state and nonprofit websites for help and guidance to correctly catch a couple of things (missing car VIN #s for title transfers and verbiage for out of state school registration permission). Also, the mediator nearly freaked out at our amicable way to split the sale of the house, and we had to tweak it to calm her done (imagine someone telling you that (10-2)/2 = 4 is very different, legally, than 10/2 - 2/2 = 4 🤷).
Ie Mediation can be great-IF you trust your spouse and both can work together ahead of time to has out most money, timeline, maybe some custody expectations, and possessions.
But, be wary of poor online reviews hinting at some imperfect lawyer or staff issues, know you’ll still need to be a bit savvy yourself-or have someone else cheaper or free to help you review the document before finalizing, … and, you probably should take measures to consult a lawyer, tax person, and/or online help-especulially if you suspect you can’t fully trust your spouse (or yourself) to not make some rash, emotional financial or other big decisions prior to separation, mediation, or divorce.
Oh, and get counseling for yourself and the kids.

We have bought the licenses for all of your beloved childhood stories and characters and now that you're grown we are going to kind of adult them up a bit...I mean a lot more than you but you're mentally still a child anyway.
      So you're 40 and single?
Well check out this new comic book movie that has characters you enjoyed as a kid.

Even my extremely uncomplicated (no pets, no kids, no shared property), completed uncontested, totally amicable divorce cost $1800 in notary fees and a year of calls to the courthouse until it was finally approved. And literally all we needed was for a judge to rubber-stamp a document saying, "Yep, I agree you're divorced and have already handled all the financial stuff already!" I became hugely sympathetic to the people who are "separated but not divorced" because DAMN that shit gets expensive!

@@the_once-and-future_king. I’m in Quebec, not America. We needed to have a notarized document prepared, essentially saying “yeah, we agree that we’ve split our assets” but in legalese. That’s where most of the money went - to the notary. In theory we could have done in ourselves, but after bashing my head against the instructions for two weeks, I realized I needed a professional. The divorce filing fees were only about a hundred dollars, plus another 40 to get a formal copy of our marriage certificate, which we realized we didn’t have. A ridiculous waste of money to do the notarized document, if you ask me, but needs must.

I had to end a bunch of relationships because they couldn't see that they had any flaws or fault of their own. They were the victim, and everything that was wrong was external to them. It made any form of progression in the relationship impossible. When you think that, you dont take responsibility for anything. It explained alot, and It was very subtle and took about... 8 years to really become a problem. Hilarious.
But when it was happening, and I was trying to resolve the issues and hitting a brick wall because of that deep rooted attitude, I was like... this is what people in divorces keep describing to me.
It takes two active, willing, engaged, responsible, and accountable participants to form a relationship long term. If even one isnt doing it, it cant work. I think thats where the stat comes from. People being lazy, and just not taking responsibility for their lives.

I do research on custody disputes. I can confirm that a lot of cases concern mothers wanting to keep the fathers away from their children. Usually, the mothers try to convince the courts that the father is an unfit parent, while the justice system (where I live) uses concepts that no-one understands or even have a clue on what it means. Also, there are other feminist organizations that work hard to help these women. The whole thing is awful.

We treat children as if they don't have their own opinion, meanwhile every child I met knew damn well which was their favorite parent or if they loved both the same. Of course this shouldn't be the end of the discussion, but the child's wishes should at least be considered.

I'm all for Shacking Up, especially if one has already been married and divorced and has kids. Second and subsequent marriages can screw your kids out of their inheritance, because if you die before your 2nd spouse does, that spouse gets it all, leaving your kids with nothing unless you've provided for them through trusts and such with the help of an attorney. However, that rebound spouse will still get all the family heirlooms, including the gun collection your great-grandfather started that you planned to leave to your son and the jewelry or art collection ypu planned to leave to your daughter. And if the step-parent decides to be an even BIGGER asshole, just out of spite (and they quite often do), your kids won't even get the family photographs you've taken and collected over the years. There may even be a beloved, old, family pet that simply "vanishes" without a trace or a decent explanation. I truly and firmly believe that remarrying is one of the shittiest things you can do to your children. MUST you REALLY have that piece of paper that ties you to a step-parent with hundreds of feet of red tape?
Remember folks ~ Blood is thicker than water, and you never TRULY know someone. Didn't you ALREADY learn that with your ex?! Don't gamble on family treasures or your children's inheritance just for a sheet of paper that will likely be FAR more trouble than it's worth, and far more costly to have revoked than you can imagine. The "NEW" WILL wear off, just like it did the first time. When that time comes, if you avoided signing that contract, your arm will get sore from patting yourself on the back.

But I honestly think people expect life to be late constantly perfect and both sides in a marriage or any relationship have to just learn give and take and to work through tough times and to grow.
I think people expect everyone to conform to themselves more than meeting in a mutual middle ground.
Like I said I get it there or some relationships that definitely shouldn't be or somebody needs to get out before they get hurt kind of thing.
That makes sense like got to have an avenue for that.

Don't get married folks. Just keep being in the relationship marriage is just getting a piece of paper that says what you already have is legally enforceable

That is until your parents keep nagging you guys to tie the knot, or you have kids and they don't want the stigma of being bastards on them. Happened to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. For about a decade into their relationship, they had kids together including several adopted ones. It was their kids who finally convinced them to get hitched. And about two years into their marriage, their relationship had deteriorated and their messy divorce is still ongoing.

Quick tip to not get divorced. Don’t get married. There are virtually no benefits in doing it.

    • @DemonicAdj

Saves money, for sure. Sink a pretty penny tying that knot only to burn a pile of cash untangling it.

And if you have kids it’s actually more beneficial on taxes if they assume the mother is single, even though both parents live in the same house, at least in my country.

As a man who had to divorce his wife, this hits close to home. Took me 3 years to pay off that 16K in debt. Once I did, I threw a party. I really don't believe in marriage. Better to just live together and leave when you're done.
