„Fade To Black” to opowieść o człowieku, który stracił chęć do życia. Utwór ten daje nam wgląd w umysł samobójcy, pokazując co doprowadziło go do tego, że w końcu sięgnął po ostatecznie rozwiązanie. Widzimy, że bohater czuje jakby wszystko wymykało mu się spod kontroli.
Rzeczy wcześniej sprawiające radość przestają mieć jakiekolwiek znaczenie, przyszłość zaczyna wydawać się pozbawiona perspektyw, a teraźniejszość wydaje się tylko pasmem nieustannego bólu. Autor czuje, jakby cały świat walił się wokół niego. Zdaje sobie sprawę, że jedyną osobą, jaka może wyciągnąć go z jego cierpienia jest on sam, ale doszedł już do takiego punktu, że nie jest pewien czy w ogóle chce być uratowany. Śmierć zaczyna wydawać się lepszym rozwiązaniem niż starania, by jego jałowe życie zrobić bardziej znośnym. Postanawia więc ze sobą skończyć, bo tylko to da mu w jego mniemaniu ukojenie, pozwoli uciec od świata, który i tak stał się niezrozumiały.
Hetfield pokazuje tu nam, jak bardzo cierpią ludzie chorujący na depresję. Są kompletnie pozbawieni nadziei i nie mają żadnych chęci do życia. Jedyne, czego pragną to ucieczka od wszystkiego, którą przynieść może tylko śmierć.

In my opinion, which is purely mine, Mr. Kirk Hammet aka guitar god since the 80's, let your solo's sing free without the wah-wah. I find it muddy's away your giv'er. I recently saw a video of you in the 80's and your guitar looked like it could have pinned you for a 3 count in the WWF, but you owned it like a dragon rider. The beasts (guitar) ferocity leaped from your hands with every note, while you were a focused metal maniac. Ride the dragon more often...Hiccup
He doesn't even play it the way it is on the album anymore. Anyone who plays the guitar will tell you how lazy he got with the solos we all love and enjoy. I mean it's his shit and he can do whatever he wants, and I think it's cool he improvises but still, that end solo to FADE is one of my all time favorites and I'd like to hear it THAT WAY!
