- Having been slightly disappointed by our last E39 M5, we have another go with this 2001 model. It features a full exhaust, KW Variant 3 coilovers, Dinan ECU software, and a short shifter, providing for a stock-like, but optimized driving experience.

BMW being what they are today, i sometimes forget how much i used to love BMWs back when they made cars like this.
JohnnyNr5 Yep, its why I never got rid of my E46 M3 for a newer model. I test drove a 2012 M3 and while it felt a lot quicker it just felt too big and disconnected, it just didn't feel like I was driving a "sports" car it felt more like just a family car with a big engine.
always loved BMWs, E46 CSL is still one of my dream cars, to me the last decent BMW was the E90 M3 and the V10 M5, even though they are big the changes in the drivetrain were sick and compensated for any negative aspects. nowadays I see new 318d models with M badges and articficially misfiring M3s - it makes me wanna throw up. the V8 M3 and V10 M5 are sick cars but when they released the i8 with a 3cyl and downsized the drivetrains of the drivers cars while making them look more aggressive and put a 700hp V12 into the 7 series boat, that's when I knew I would never ever drive a BMW out of the factory again. I don't think the M2/M4 will ever have bad handling, but to me the current models look and feel synthetic and flashy and that's the exact opposite of what BMWs used to be.
I was a kid in the '90s and you can be sure I had BMW posters on the wall.... no way in hell I'd do the same with today's lineup.
JohnnyNr5 I agree. they are crazy over priced as well. I've got a 09 e92 335i I picked up for much cheaper than the market. it's a good car to daily. very nice and comfy and has hydraulic steering which I prefer. Curves are great and it ain't overkill with styling like the new ones and still gets plenty of looks because most people don't even know it's an older one that I got muchhhhh cheaper than typical BMW guys today. I've got a s14 Jap car I put all my $$$ into.
Actually a buddy and I just testdrove a BMW 118i and then a Mercedes A-class and, while I am biased towards BMW, it blew me away how absolutely shit the Mercedes was. Granted, the 118i had M-suspension and the Mercedes didn't have an AMG thing going on, but jesus christ. The shiftknob in the Mercedes was the same horrid plastic as in a basemodel E36 316i... Couldn't reach the aircon for shit because the shifter is in the way. There's an extremely ugly 90's phone style 1-abc, 2-defg, 3-hijk 4-lmno keyboard on the dash, even though the satnav screen could've just been touchscreen. We were wiggling the wheel back and forth on both cars, in the BMW we stayed completely planted in the nice M-seats, in the Mercedes the whole car rocked left and right and the rock-hard basemodel seats didn't provide ANY support. Of course it's not a fair comparison due to the M-seats, but hey...
Also the Mercedes didn't have ANY headroom in the back. Not even exagerating, sitting normally, straight up, I had 1 cm of headroom to the side before hitting my head on the c-pillar.
We returned the Mercedes after just 5 minutes of driving, while we honestly didn't want to give the BMW back. My buddy was so blown away by it that he ordered one the same day.
That said, Mercedes is just one competitor of course, and I've never had any issue with VWs and Audis build quality etc.
Matt, that high pitched wine is electrical noise coming from the alternator, hence why it increases with increasing RPM.
It's from inadequate shielding/electrical noise suppression in the radio and radio wiring, causing a high frequency noise to permeate through to the speakers.
Yes, alternator whine
Andrew Ford yep. I've only had it with aftermarket amps. It can be solved with the right value capacitor connected as close as possible to the alternator output and ground. I don't remember the value, been a few years
Can be also caused by a bad diode in the altornantor rectifier causing a noisy output
I've only had it happen with a lot of OEM radios, and cheaper aftermarket radios. My stock swift head unit was especially bad, and the whine went away completely when I replaced it with an "expensive" ~$600 Sony AVH-X3700DAB head unit.
I've also seen the noise unductively transferred to the radio wiring or speaker wires through wires that are run too close to any 12V wires without shielding
It also helps if you separate the speaker cables from the power cables.
e39's are a timeless design. Love this and the w211 e55 from this era.
Xplosion51 wtf
cczz - You heard him. Holocaust tears are empowering the cars.
impossible to find a manual one so the E55 is not on my list :/
it is an amazing car regardless
I think you mean w210
You must have not known BMW made airplane engines for the war...
E39 M5 is the perfect combination of what a car purist looks for, RWD, 4.9L V8( incredibly difficult to beat the sound of the s62), 6 speed mt, timeless aesthetics. A true timeless legend
true and there resale value is climbing in Australia
but so is our vx gts that was competitor at the time
Just what I thought... So I bought one 😁
Never regretted it
i owned a n E39 540i for 10 years. Still the best all round car I ever owned. The 4.4 V8 was a dream.
Amen brother !
SilverS ls swap it
Alonzo Gonzalez
It made me angry even though i knew you were joking xD
540i very good car
I have an 03 540i/6 M sport, it’s a wonderful car and while no M5, still seriously fast.
I never thought e39's were good looking until I saw it in person.
You see them from the distance, you instantly know that they are BMWs. Such a classic machine. The sounds mature but means business. Damn I need this car
Jason Lee thanks man! Want to buy it lol?
Did,he just say - My Wife says its a grandpas car.. I might need to get a new Wife XD
It may be because he drives it like a grandpa judging by the drive-bys! I wanted to hear him get on it
MotorFrozes yeah that killed me lol
My wife isn't too happy with me after that comment. I wasn't too happy with her after calling it a grandpa car. Show me one damn Grandpa driving an e39 M5!
Give me 30 years and I will!
MrMiggoH lol. I'm with ya.
I am NOT a BMW fan. But I have a huge spot in my heart for the E39 M5. Love this car.
Love that the e39 M5 only came in a manual
Mike Arredondo hell yeah.. The man who designed it knew what he was doing.
its are drivers car . same as our vt2 hsv gts ... both similar price now 25k up . becoming iconic gems
A nice E39 stands out now on the road! An M V8 with more power.. what's not to love?
It really is a perfect design, isn't it? I'd take a nice E39 over any newer 5 series.
allesklar I would for sure! I honestly think the build quality is better too!
It doesnt stand out. Looks like a grey box.
+RtdXyron just no
I can't imagine a day when this car is not cool.
Closed one bmw e39 door and you immediately know why we love it's build!
The E39 M5 still has qualities that even brand new bimmers can't match. So much of this car is fantastic. If you've been driving newer BMWs, and you get behind the wheel of an E39 M5, you really get to understanding that these cars are the best M series BMW has made. Thats not an opinion, that's a fact
Big 'ol Booty Cheeks right on man! You get it.
I love e39s, one of the best bmw,s ever
Pedro sanchez rosso i agree
Guy says "You should add one to your stable" and Matt gives the quickest "NO!".
That's why I watch these videos! The honesty is always refreshing.
Those older M5's hold a special place in my dream garage. Just love how they look and sound.
The juice is always worth the squeeze
What if it's made from shit, still worth the squeeze?
biggboysouth Depends on how badly you want it
All hail to one of the greatest ! I will never sell my E39 until there is a proper replacement for it. I'm so glad you got hold of one Matt. These are the best cars to do everything and anything, except off-roading.
What about an e90 m3? Not exactly a replacement but wouldn't it make a good update with the newer NA v8? LOL
I did look at those, but only the coupe version is worth it. And I really need a sedan. Also, rod bearing journals scare me more than timing tensioners on my E39. There are other things too, I do like the analogue feeling of older BMWs versus the newer ones, so that's the reason I'm sticking to my E39. If love a V10 M5, but the odds of getting one with a stickshift are super slim, and it has rod bearing issues as well
They're pretty bad in the snow, at least mine is
Must be yours. A heavy car with a great traction control needs nothing but a good set of Nokian snow tires and common sense. I've driven rwd BMWs in Canadian snow and have yet to blame the car for anything. It's definitely doable. Not to mention, the E39 has great seat heaters, and the big engine gets up to temps pretty fast so you can get warmed up quick. Also, did I mention how well the heated steering wheel works ? Trust me, they're hard to beat 😁
I have a 2003 540 M sport with 56k miles in it. I also have a 2014 Mustang GT with 11k miles in it. If I have to sell one of my cars, it will be the Mustang.
"Sloppy...can't win em all"
Well that about sums up the ladies during my college days
Old Gregg me too thanks
Old Gregg I bet you drank a lot of Baileys from shoes in your college days
Is a former owner of a 2000 model, I can attest to the greatness of the car. Further, at least with mine, it was essentially bulletproof. BMW really built a solid car back in that time.
Olive View wat happen to it
Sold.
Owner for 3 years of a 2002 M5, 46k miles. The engine never had any problems, even after racing it. But all the sensors and supporting stuff in the car required a lot of upkeep. Car was very solid... handling was impressive for a 4k pound car. Very predictable and easy to control in every situation (except for slow speed understeer in the autocrosses).
Almost identical to my car. Love it. And it can definitely be driven every day. Very low maintenance costs in the last 8 years and almost 100k miles.
I love these cars! They are so clean and sleek which makes for a perfect sleeper!
Driver's Side not a sleeper at all. A Ford Taurus SHO is a sleeper on steelies.
I had a 2000 one with Eisenmann race mufflers back in 2006-2007. Miss it everyday.
Khazar Jew it got stolen.
@@735337707 bruh I'm sorry even though it's already 12 years
that noise is called ground loop feedback for anyone who comes across this. 2 seperate paths to ground create an antenna of sorts that picks up electrical noise from the engine/alternator
Now that's a properly modded E39 by a true BMW enthusiast. I run the same rogue engineering short shifter and KW v2 coilovers on my E46. Really expands the already fantastic driving experience. Great review!
atlanticimports thank you! Much appreciated.
The E39 is still the best and prettiest production car BMW has ever made. The straight sixes are great too, just lovely engines, and the Touring is just as handsome as the saloon with the added bonus that it can carry a lot of stuff (I've had one four-up with luggage and a tumble dryer in the back).
I had an e39 m5 and they are such great drivers car. it was such a great car to drive and rev.
High pitched whine is likely alternator feedback through the speakers @TheSmokingTire
Another gem that I owned and was enticed to purchase because of those classic good looks. It was the 530i 6 cyl. version that I liked as well in some ways as my e-46. It handled amazing and rode well. It felt very luxurious at that time when purchased new. It also gave me many fond memories and I loved that buttermilk smooth in line 6 that accommodated the rest of the vehicle's lay-out perfectly. I guess the go to car for that day was the e-39 with the 540i 8 cyl. but I was happy with the 6 cyl.
Gregory Trane that's what led me to buy this. Owned a 2002 530i with a manual. Loved that car. Should have never sold it.
just picked up a 540i/6 in really good shape 125k for 3200, got an insane deal
How's the reliability been?
A twin to my 2000, without the wheels. The Rogue shifter is wonderful. I chose Ground Control Coil overs, better rotors etc. Average 20 MPG. I wonderful old man car for an old man! NIce comments.
I've been on that road with my E46 M3 that I don't own anymore. This video totally makes me miss owning an M car! D: SWEET M5!!!
Rogue has been around since E30 days. They make pretty good stuff.
Had a 2001 535 i loved it miss that one the most !!!
Hands down favorite car EVER.
Needs a set of longtubes to complete it! Sounds so good! One of my favorite cars! Just sold my E39 540i m sport 6-speed with M5 bumpers!
This guy is the Luckest man in the world! He gets to drive all these beautiful cars and comment on them. Push them to the limit! Let's see him drive his own cars with Strangers!!!
you know the car's stiff when the moobs juggle
rot salad hahaha. Killing me man. Time to go on a diet.....of mustang GTs maybe!
Ohhh baby that x pipe and exhaust pair sounds just muah 👌 fantastic my man
MistahMOB thanks man. Love it. I thought I was revving it enough in the drive byes. Just a taste though.
I love the e39
Had one as my first car and i still fckn love it!!
One of my all time favorites!
My Dad still hasn't gotten over his e39 m5. Hell, I miss being in the car seat in that beast
Here from PKA, love the channel!
I have a 2001 lemans metallic blue m 5 have almost 260k mile on it still drive cool
Update? Still going strong?
Timothy Carter still drive like Champions
Great video. Glenns Car Collection reviewed a supercharged E39 M5, it was a beast
Owner: "Fuck you for pointing out the noise...now it's all I hear."
Our invitation to drive one of ours is always on the table Matt!
Enthusiast Auto Group yours are typically stock. Don't think that's what Matt is looking for.
one of my favorite all time cars. e39 M5...
I have the same issue with my muffler deleted 540it- the exhaust is fairly loud on the outside but inside the car it's pretty quiet, only a little louder than stock. The sound deadening almost works too well, haha
dad had a black 02 m5. He's always said it was his favorite car, but he's moved on to 7 series in older age. i want to buy the same e39 he had, restore it and drive it myself someday!
Smear that would be admirable. Do it!
It’s the alternator. Replaced it on my 550i with a remanufactured one and now have that high pitch sound. Never had it prior.
I miss the style of sport sedans from like 2002 to 2010. Alot of great cars from that Era.
Love the e39s. Had two e39s a 520i and a 530d m sport. I really miss them :( Now they were no m5s obviously but they were fantastic cars.
loveeeeeee this m5 omg and good bolt ons
Tyler Wallace thanks man.
nice video!
I love these E39 M5's...
Same color and wheels as my e92. I like it
The noise you are hearing is electrical interference usually from the ignition system high voltage. You can sometimes fix it with strategic grounding placement or capacitors/better shielding in your audio power system
5:18 Decisions where made that day...
Frosty Films hahahaha. Wife is none too happy with me for that comment lol.
Used to have a mini cooper and I would get electrical feedback through the speakers when I would have my phone plugged into an AC charging port at the same time as the auxiliary port
the high pitch sound is from the aftermarket unit. had the same problem when i connected my Bluetooth trough the cdchanger input.
E39 m5 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The E60 M5 With the V10 was by the most impressive BMW ever!
Beautiful car
STROMBA420 thank you man.
True bmw quality
Damn you Matt now I'm not sure if I really want to sell my 02 e39 touring.
that high pitch sound could be because a device being plugged in to an aftermarket aux or usb ( a combination of the two). I've noticed it in my cars.
Would love to see an E38 with S62 swap on one take!
Best looking BMW ever made.
Often times the high pitch noise is from poor ground in relation to the audio unit heard through the speakers more so if auxiliary cable is in but not connected. Related to power output from alternator with engine rpm
my dream car
I had Rogue SSK on my E46 M3 ZCP, they are excellent.
10 minute video got the point across. Great way to spend $20k to $25k.
A worthy rival to to the E55.
My Mini has the same electric whine, I think the other comment about the alternator/electrical shielding is right about the issue.
as in the answer to Andrew Ford, who's totally right. the noise comes from the Phone connection. he mentioned the cd changer mod. check the wires there.
My car has had that before too. If your radio is on but you're not listening to anything, for example, the AUX cable is in, it'll make that noise. Happened on most of my cars lol
Man this makes me miss mine :(
If you use after market LED or HID lights, you will get the whine thru the radio speakers. it's an RF frequency issue if the unit most likely Chinese made.
I went through therefor the first time on a school bus this sunday on the way to camp. Felt bad for all the cars stuck behind us.
It could be a grounding issue as well. Either a loose ground wire or one needs to be added. The Honda Accord had this same issue a few years ago and Honda's fix for it was adding a ground wire.
Come check out our E39 M5 on our channel! Along with our V10 M6 and our E92 M3 and other BMWs as well!
Hey Matt, I once saw a video of yours and there was an ad for coffee.. I can't find the video... I want the link so I can test them out :P
when e31?
I can barely hear the whine in the audio but, I can say I drive a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Penstar V6 auto and I get a very loud whine during hard acceleration and its been like that from new. It sounds like it has a supercharger (when it doesn't it)
The sound might be interference in your audio / RCA cables. The voltage of your battery changes when you rev up and down because your alternator speed changes. This voltage change can be heard through your audio system if your electrical wires are close to your audio cables.
The first thing to do is check the grounds of all your audio systems, rough them up, add some connectivity lubricant and do 'm up tight. Next you can install an alternator noise filter on the power line between the battery and the alternator to minimize the problem. You can also install a noise filter on the receiver's power lead to cut down on signal pollution.
Ive also heard this noise when u have ur phone plugged in charging and into a aux cord at tye same time
really wanted 1 of these before opting to get my Gen 1 ctsv
NinnyCTS V your children's college fund will thank you
Hey Matt, great stuff! Planning on doing a new civic type r anytime soon? If you're in north NJ I'd be happy to offer mine for a drive!
Kevin Yarleque I'm going to be getting one as a press car eventually
That high pitch is from the alternator supplying power to your accessories. Even if everything is off it's feeding the units this why you hear the sound in correlation to the revs. The rev dictate the speed of the alternator which in turn dictates the voltage and amps delivered. Best guess is it's electrical leakage to the speakers.
CK_32 It dictates amperage delivered, but voltage is regulated.
MORE E39 M5!!!!!!!!
For me, it was the alternator current messing with a defect MOSFET chip in an aftermarket stereo head unit. Regardless of stock or after-market, the stereo has a MOSFET chip. Suss that out.
Otherwise, it's what +Andrew Ford said. Try his suggestion out first. Potentially cheaper. But the new Clarion MOSFET chip cost (incl. replacement) was AU$30.
I work at BMW and everyone says e39 and e46 were the last true BMW before all the technology bullshit 😂
El South Side totally agree.
Electrical sound related to revving engine would be alternator?
Given the damping and ride on these absolutely hits the bullseye and is arguably its biggest trick, I never really understand going for aftermarket options with the suspension.
In my experience the noise usually comes from an aftermarket audio component
This car is nice, but finding a Clean M power car with manual and low mileage for a reasonable price is impossible these days😭
I think that high pitched whine is coming from that aux adapter I installed one in my mom's 2003 mdx and it does that whine .
Tech Assistant this!
What type and brand muffles do you have on the car? I love the sound is why I'm asking ok thank you
BILLY INGRAM Eisenmann. Sport. 83 MM.
"5.0L V8. Last time I messed up and said 4.0L". Actually the M5 is a 4.9L. So actually you messed up again. 🤣
The whine may be from the radios volume by speed setting. Hold down the m button on the radio and find the GAL setting.
A lot of entertainment systems have this feature for reasons that are beyond me.
Great car. Not sure about some of the modifications but yeah, great car.
ianiva the only one I want to take off is the intake. The rest add to the car in my humble opinion.
Which I respect. I'm more of keeping a car stock kind of guy particularly for special ones like your M5. Why do you want to replace the intake?
ianiva I think it's shite. Probably hurting the car more than helping it. Looks good. But that's about it.
