  • After owning the 500i for about a year and half this is my honest opinion on the saw.

I put my new 462-C into 28” of wet red oak and it flew through it.
Beats the brakes off my ported and tuned 390.
32” bar, stock and the 462 is absolutely wild. Get yourself one if you’re serious.

Yes I bought one and agree with you 100%. The saw is a joy to operate.

Had mine now for a little over 3 years, it’s STIHL my favorite saw. I like my 462R also…..but for all out speed without all the weight the 500i is all I’ll ever need. Too old for the likes of a 661c, but would like to have one, just for fun/mill work. Being way past my prime I doubt it will ever happen. Enjoyed the video, Thanks 🪵⛓🪚👍👏🇺🇸 Rick

I picked up a 500i about 6 months ago. Im impressed with the power and usability but only when it runs right. It seems like theres alot of 4 stroking unless youre dogged in and pulling hard on it. Drives me crazy. I ended up putting an 8 tooth sprocket on it and that really cleaned it up.

Yeah there’s some quirks to be worked out but overall it is a great saw.

If you put a 32 inch bar on the saw, you can stand up to buck. It is a lot easier on your back.

Yeah that’s true. Only reason I don’t is because a lot of time if we are climbing large limbs in the tree I do not want to have that long of a bar with all that extra weight up in the tree.

I only make about 30 cord a year right now. I have had my 500i for almost a year it's a great saw. I was just not going to pay 1k for a used 461.Most wood I get is red and white oak that's over 30". Except the little bit of hickory that's usually over 20". It was a major upgraded from the 1970s still 051 I was using. A beast but heavy.

Yeah the saws have come a long way. I do miss my 046 that I sold 5 years ago. That saw ripped. Should of never sold that one. And 30 cord a year is good. Lot of wood. I’m guessing your getting tree service wood since the diameter is so big? At least it is oak. Premium.

@@Treestofirewood yes some tree service wood. Most of it comes from cow pastur and fence rows plus farmers ditch lines being cleared. Down here in southern il no one runs self loading log trucks. I even considered a 038 magnum or super but they are high when you found one.

I have the 036 Pro that is 25 years old. She does what I need it to do for us. What chains do you use? How do you sharpen your chains? How long do the chains lat for you? Sorry for all the questions. Great video as always.

I always say if you have something that works use it. I miss some of my old saws. I have used all different brands and always go back to using stihl chains. Last long. Stay sharp longer. And I hand file my chains. Only way to get a consultant edge. Sharpen by feel.

Hello! I've an 500i too. Fine saw! One point about Stihl I don't understand. Why is Stihl unable to built a clean airfiltersystem like Husqvarna do? My 572xp has an clean airfilter after two weeks of working. The Stihl's is full of sawdust in half a day?!

    • @Treestofirewood
      @Treestofirewood  5 місяців тому +1

Yeah I would agree with that. I clean my air filter every other fill up. All my stihls are this way. Maybe they have better air flow idk. Glad I always have a filter in there. Haha but other than that 500i is a great saw.

What do you use to sharpen your chains? Hopeing to have a wood boiler in the next year. I currently have a stihl 180, 391 and a wood boss 025.

I hand file all my chains. I feel you get the best overall sharpness. What boiler are you looking at getting? I still have my 391. Probably have the most hrs on that saw.

@Treestofirewood I'm not sure as to what boiler I'll be getting. I've been looking at a few options but nothing definitive yet. The one you have is awesome. I haven't found many dealers here in iowa.
