Clear concise, not falling prey to try to teach this to those who have no business trying to learn it, and not going overboard on the specifics, while still BEING SPECIFIC. Great video, one of the best

I found this song in 1993 and instantly fell in love with it. In 1996 I found the most beautiful honey haired girl named Emily and I played this song for her. We dated for almost two years. I felt this song was meant for me. I still think of Emily often.
Hi WW! Thanks for listening! I hope you felt my version did Paul Simon's song justice! Sorry things didn't work out with Emily, but at least you have that memory! It's a great song! I hope all is well for you! - Glenn

I posted my own version of the song on UA-cam, using your lesson for the basis of the guitar playing on it. I didn't use a 12 string, but instead, used a 6 string through a chorus effect. Thank you again for the lesson. I credited you in the description.
Thank you Brian. That's very cool! - Glenn
@@glennwillow5124 Your 12 string sounds a lot better than my 6, plus, I didn't use finger picks like you did, so it rings out even less. I just noticed your full rendition of the song in your other video. The guitar really chimes. Would've loved to have had that sound on my video, but I can't see running out to buy a 12 string just to play one video. That beautiful sound is probably worth it, but I already have more guitars than I have time to play. LOL.
@@gbferrell Hi Brian, I'm sure you are having fun with the guitars you have. And a 12-string doesn't work for everyone. The best thing is to enjoy and appreciate what we each have. I hope all is well for you these days. Thanks for your response! - Glenn

Hello Glenn!!! After a few frustrating lesson videos for "Emily", You are the ONLY ONE that finally taught me how to play the intro!!! The Key was the Dsus2 and the "Proper" picking technique. I'am a pretty good guitarist but the picking was hard at first. Kinda like playing a Greg Lake tune, takes time. I have a 1979 Japan Fender F-55 12 with rosewood back and sides and even some pearl inlay on the headstock and fretboard. Put HD Bone saddle and nut, but truss rod won't cooperate to lower the action. Hard player to say the least but it rings with outstanding sustain. Time for a new one I think. Love and blessings to you sir. I really appreciate you. Robert in Michigan
Thank you Robert! I'm so glad this lesson was able to help you a little! Thanks for your kind feedback! - Glenn

You do this song an incredible justice Glenn. I'm a struggling guitar player who plays only by ear and know talent when I hear it. Nice Guild by the way. Keep up the great work.
Thank you Jeff! I basically play by ear also, though I have learned a few things along the way over the last 54 years of playing. There is no shame in playing by ear; the only problem is communication with others. So I have learned some additional things so I could communicate with others. @@glennwillow5124 Thank you Glenn. I definitely found the lesson helpful. I need to get a 12 string though. LOL. I can tell by your commentary that you really appreciate this beautiful song, as I do. I like the reverb effect of the room you are recording in that compliments your sweet singing voice. The room I record my videos in is filled with stuff and there is practically no reverbration.
@@gbferrell Hi Brian, Yes I am lucky in the room where I have my studio. It's a good size room up above my garage with a hard wood floor with a very nice, live, slightly reverberant sound. I use the room for several other functions, too, but it's still nice and open. Regarding the 12-string, yes, I do love what a 12-string can do. I think having a good 6-string and a good 12-string can be very helpful. Thanks for your comments! Be well! - Glenn
Huh.Here I thought it was much more difficult than this after hearing it all these years. That is the genius of Paul Simon. He just has a way of making songs sound so complex. 'Scarborough Fair' is another example. Learned so many S&G songs over the years but never worked towards trying this one. Going to add this to my set list.
Hi Guibox! Well, I;m glad this song is going to work out for you! It is not terribly hard once you know how to play "For Emily". Part of that is the genius of Paul Simon -- he was very inventive -- and part of the accessibility of this song is the magic of the 12-string guitar and the value of those high octave strings. Best of luck with this song and thank you very much for taking the time to comment here! All the best to you! - Glenn

Tremendously useful - I was just trying to think how I was going to flat pick this on the 12 string. I have though just bought a Travis pick (I'd never heard it called that before) with a view to cracking the finger picking malarkey on the 6 string - I might just dive straight into the 12 string with it now . Thanks.
Hi Sandy! I am so pleased that you are finding this tutorial useful in learning Paul SImon's "For Emily..." Thanks for watching and for your comments! - Glenn
Wow 😮 there isn’t too many things that compare to the beauty of a 12 string In one of my own compositions my song already seemed to be satisfying to me the way I wrote it However add the 12 and it seemed to further accentuate even more life Sometimes I discover these kind of things (gimmicks alternate tunings etc) on my own thinking I’ve originated something only to later discover the greats have already done it lol Like this wonderfully emotionally charged tune for example….. Thanks for sharing

Glen, I love this tutorial. I've mastered the intro as in the first two chords... e.i Dsus2 and open
Can you type the chords you use next in order
Hi Martin, The intro is just as you have stated, Dsus2, open, Dsus2, open, and then the song starts on the first verse. The following listing of chords and lyrics is essentially correct except it doesn't always list the chord variations. For those you need to pick them up from my tutorial. tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/simon-garfunkel/for-emily-whenever-i-may-find-her-chords-974820 I wish I had come up earlier with the method I am using now, where I show the chord diagrams along with the video, but it took me a while to realize how helpful this would be. Glennwillow No worries, much appreciated. I’ve been listening to this since I was a little kid, over 40 years, tried figuring it out a few times and gave up, even found some dodgy tabs that just didn’t work. I got the gist of it almost straight away watching your video. It’s the middle of the night here and I’m still on it. Thanks again, you made my day :)
Nice! Thank you - I got a request for this one and need to learn in a hurry lol. That Guild sounds amazing - what pickup are you using? I have a Taylor Fall Limited 4 series with Indian Rosewood which is very good but nothing sounds like a Guild 12.
Hi Bob! Thank you for your comments! I hope you find this tutorial helpful! I agree, the Guild 12-strings have a wonderful sound, and I particularly like this model F512. For this video I am not using a pickup but rather two small diaphragm condenser microphones, Rode NT5, panned full left and full right in the recording. My Guild F512 has a dual source pickup system installed, but I have never used it. I have removed the battery from the pickup system. I like the sound from good microphones. Best of luck on learning this song! Stay safe out there! - Glenn
Fantastic thanks you
Really, no guitar police, I got a ticket for playing at 150 bpm in a 100 bpm zone. 😂
Hi Gary, I can see why that would get you in trouble! Take care out there! - Glenn
You have a good voice, so sing the whole song for closing, please 👍👍
Thanks Trah, I'm glad you are watching. For the song ending, please see my full cover of "For Emily" here: ua-cam.com/video/jCcRChiJwCg/v-deo.html. Thanks, Glenn
Great lesson, by the way; your Guild sounds amazing but you have a great voice with nice vibrato. Is it difficult to play a 12 string?
Hi Jack! Thanks so much for your comments! I'm glad you felt that this lesson was helpful.
A 12-string can be a little more difficult to play, so it's very helpful for it to be set up for low action but without buzzing on the frets. You have to push more strings down with your fingers and barre chords take more force to allow clean playing, but in exchange you get a lot of additional sound for your efforts. So, it's a trade off. Many people buy a 12-string guitar and then find that they don't play it much. I bought this Guild model F512 from just such a person. I have owned a 12-string since I was 18 years old (52 years now), and I have a repertoire of songs I regularly play on the 12-string. So for me, the 12-string guitar is really important, just as important as a 6-string is for me.
This song, "For Emily," does not use any barre chords and so it's really not much harder to play this on the 12-string than it would be on a 6-string guitar, but the extra octave strings add so much more on the 12-string.
Best of luck to you on your playing!
- Glenn
Hi R House! I'm sorry I missed your comment from 9 months ago. I have a fair number of 12-string songs on my UA-cam channel listed here: ua-cam.com/video/GF28hIJDCnE/v-deo.html Gordon Lightfoot, in particular, has done a lot of music on the 12-string. All the best to you! - Glenn
If you can play a 6 string you can play a 12 string
It's a very nice and beautiful version of that wonderful song, would it be possible to get the tabs for it? I have a little hard time to understand the english since it's not my own language. I woould be most grateful cause this is a very personal song for me and has been for many many years. If you want I can pay you a few bucks for your trouble if you write it all down. // Mattias.
Hi Matzyboy! I don't think I have ever written anything out as tablature. Very sorry. There are versions of "For Emily..." that are written out in tab, but right off the top of my head, I can't remember who did it. Let me look a little and see if I can find who did this. Thanks for watching and for your comments! - Glenn
Hi Matzyboy -- I have been told that the book "Paul Simon Transcribed" by Mark Hanson has a tab on "For Emily." Here is one place you can buy the book: www.amazon.com/Paul-Simon-Transcribed-Garfunkel/dp/0936799099
Hi Matzyboy -- I found this tablature page on Paul Simon's website: www.paul-simon.info/PHP/showsongtab.php?songnummer=215 I hope this is helpful. :-) Glenn
Glennwillow Those tabs might help, but they are nowhere near this lesson except for the basic chord shapes. You did so well with this lesson that it would be worth hiring someone to tab it for you.
Are the chords available to see Glen
Hi Martin, Thanks for watching. On lessons I make today, I put up chord diagrams, but this is one of my early tutorials and I had not tumbled to the conclusion that this would be a good thing to do. You can get the chords here: tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/simon-garfunkel/for-emily-whenever-i-may-find-her-chords-974820 Stay safe out there Martin! - Glenn
Would a 12 string simulator work ok ?
Hi Trevor! I don't know how a 12-string simulator would work. I have only seen people use chorus effects to simulate a 12-string. If you had a device that would simulate the high octave strings, then yes, I bet it would work. But I don't think that a chorus effect would get you to the sound of a real 12-string. Thanks for your comments -- I hope all is well for you! - Glenn
