- The Shocking Reason Simon And Garfunkel Broke Up
Simon and Garfunkel made great music and sold millions of records together, but it wasn’t only their music that made history. It was their friendship and all the feuding between them that got everyone interested. But what really happened that made them go from best friends to rivals? The truth is finally coming to light.
It all started when Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were 11 and met at Parsons High School in Queens. It didn’t take long for them to become best friends and they did what all friends do, spend time together, share their first cigarettes together and listen to a lot of music. All that shared love for music and singing was the start of a long journey between them.

I don't understand those who denigrate Garfunkle because he "only sang" while Simon did that as well as wrote the songs and accompanied the duo on guitar. How many songs did Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat Cole, Tony Bennett, and Elvis write? Great artists all, and who but a few fans can name their song writers, arrangers, and back-up musicians? Art Garfunkel's gifted singing gave the team its angelic sound and he should be given all due credit for his contribution.
@DIARRHEA XL who cares? What’s it got to do with the music
@DIARRHEA XL what does thst have to do with the above comment?Unless it does
Well said
Did it never occur to you that maybe people SHOULD know who wrote those songs? No one said Art wasn’t talented, but writing a bunch of timeless classics trumps singing them.
Bien dicho!
Paul = brilliant songwriter. Art = brilliant vocalist. Put them together - pure dynamite! As solo artists - still explosive!
Yes, Art's solo career exploded alright! 🤣🤣🤣
Paul always had (and still has) the better voice though. ...and wrote all the music. ...and wrote some of the best lyrics, ever.
@@WinterRapids I disagree as I've always preferred Art's voice and his music style.
@@WinterRapids no way Paul has the better voice, he'd even say that himself. One of his insecurities was that his voice wasn't the greatest
Yes
Simon was absolutely a musical genius, but Garfunkel has a voice that is legendary, which us rare. So each one needed the other and I think they were, of course, incredible together.
I don’t think that they both need the other. Some people have said art was a good singer. He was a world renown singer. Paul was a good singer, a great composer, a great lyricist, and a good business man. Paul was more diverse but they both graduated from Juilliard and had the ability to go far in their careers.
Both were brilliant in their own way and both so petty in other ways, I would of been glad to go to my grave in the dark
@@deweyplanck9850 Garfunkel studied architecture at Columbia and later started a Masters in mathematics, which I gather he did not finish due to continuing with his music career. Simon studied English at Queens College, per a more definitive biography here on youtube.
@@NotSo-bp9op Hey I’m not a guy who collects stories so I’ll concede that I very well could be wrong. I’ve heard conflicting stories on different artists that cannot both be true. And your right I need to check my sources better before I repeat what I hear. This is the second time I was wrong in what I’ve repeated about artists in the last few days and I owe you for teaching me that I need to check more credible sources before I do repeat something. Thanks.

That's why I hate "The Making of..." about movies and tv shows. It usually ruins them for me.
I never thought of Paul as only a songrwiter. I think that his voice is wonderful.
His voice is ok but Garfunkels was great
His voice was meh and he knew it
@@Marcel_Audubon his voice was great in America and American Tune. Just two songs I don't see Art as the main singer. Just like I wouldn't have anyone else but Art singing Bridge Over Troubled Water
Meh
Paul's voice was nice at best and irritatingly tinny at worst. Art carried him through their partnership.
Paul...supremely talented songwriter...Artie beautiful voice...recipe for greatness.

Absolutely!
I loved Paul Simon's quote at the Concert in the Park about enjoying a show with a few hundred thousand of his closest friends.
" A neighborhood Concert!!"
How many people have known each other since they were 11 years old? Their singing together wasn't just good harmony...it was the sound of the bond of their friendship. Their collaboration was unique because of that bond. That magic came from their hearts, as well as their respective talents. We all enjoyed it, and we all lost it when they parted ways. I pray they will go to their graves as friends, no matter what.
Eagles and CSN had fantastic 3-4 parts harmonies and always feuded so this doesn't always hold true.
Paul had the groove and Art had the harmony type vocals, and it had great effect, when they were together! But,as solo artists,,,Paul is the best by far! Let's keep it real!!!
Paul is a genius writer and innovator of world music. Art is a nice harmony singer. Never equals, Paul was generous to even collaborate with him further.
Absolutely no need to feel sad about the breakup. All things come to an end , so let's be positive and feel blessed by all the great songs they have bestowed on us. And not forget how difficult it must have been for them .❤
Well said!
Love Paul’s Genius 🌟🧡🌟
I’ve heard plenty of interviews with both of them. It’s obvious they have tremendous love and respect for each other. Relationships are filled with varying hills and valleys. These guys are both passionate as all hell. Their hills and valleys are going to be on the extreme side.
The Shocking Reason Simon And Garfunkel Broke Up - because Art Garfunkel cheated on Paul Simon with another man and called him "AL" by mistake. Paul forgave him and responded "You Can Call Me AL", but the damage was already done. So, they "broke up".
Yeah i think this video took all the bad from the past 70+ years and stuffed it into a 10min video making it sound like they hate eachother. I mean they had their differences and it was bad a times, but having a career with another person and friendship for over 70 years you're gonna have some drama.
yeah, I don't think this vid mentions the world tour 'old friends' they went on together with a bunch of awesome musicians, celebrating their friendship and history.
@@harkmay right. They only post negative stuff to get views. But you can’t have the good without the bad too.
Paul was a control , perfectionist freak. Artie was working on a movie , Catch-22, that delayed his return to the band. Paul was furious.
I love both these guys equally. Paul was a great lyricist and Arts unique voice brought the songs to life, their harmonies were perfection. They were both blessed to have such creative talent. Thank you Simon and Garfunkel without your wonderful collaborations the world would be a much poorer place. 😊❤️
🎵Yvonne, get your plane right on time.🎵
This is wrong. Paul did not "leave Art behind." Art wanted to be a movie star, and he wanted Paul to just sit in NY and write songs while he winged in from wherever to contribute vocals. Paul's frustration at this proposed setup is completely understandable. Paul also wrote a beautiful song for Art called "The Only Living Boy in New York," wherein he encourages Art to pursue his dream of acting ("Tom, get your plane right on time) and assures him he will be good at it.
Why would Paul be frustrated at that arrangement? He said he wrote all the songs. Art had no songwriting to fall back on, so why shouldn't he pursue a promising film career? Simon seems like the one in the wrong.
I love that song
Paul was a brilliant song writer. That said Art had one of the purest voices to ever sing.
Good point, that's it. End of (useless) discussions on them :))
Ps. edit: when you listen and watch them better, closer, as here:
"Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer (from The Concert in Central Park)"
ua-cam.com/video/6JUbFj0BIc4/v-deo.html
...you realize that no matter what, these songs came out of love, of friendship, of a special harmony, connection, tuning between them... A special bond that started when they were just two small kids. And it resonates in their voices singing together, truly pure bliss.
As music, and life, love never perish, it's just transformed- and still, its "always the same" :))
Paul was definitely the talent of the duo. Art was/is a great vocalist. Unfortunately for him, Paul didn't need another backup singer or someone to harmonize with. He is surrounded by willing and able professional singers. It's sad that Art couldn't maintain his solo career.
I was deeply moved by their music growing up and Paul's guitar work got me interested in fingerstyle which is all I play now... many decades later.
I think it's fairly apparent who the more talented person is in this duo.
Singer always envies the composer.
Creo que en este caso el escritor envidiaba al cantante, y no solo como cantante.
I believe the 1981 Concert in the Park should have been it for them. Maybe once every few years get together for another concert, but definitely not collaborating together any more than that. The 1981 concert was their absolute best work. I can't think of another concert, from any artist, that was better than that show. It's a shame they couldn't get along, but such is life.
And here I thought they had patched things up pretty permanently at the Central Park Concert. Sad to hear about Garfunkel’s vocal injury. He had a lovely voice, but Simon was the musical genius and even if they had gotten along, he would have had to leave to fully pursue his gift. There’s no place in Graceland for those folk duet harmonies.
Paul’s talent as a songwriter and singer could not be disputed when you look at his solo career.
Art was the better singer
@@joedecker8096 Explains his solo career, oh wait…
@@TheCosmicGuy0111 Being a great singer doesn't mean you necessarily have a great solo career. Paul was the songwriter and had a decent voice so he did ok. Art had a great voice but didn't write so clearly his solo career wasn't going to be a great success like Paul's was. However, if you listen to one of his albums called Fate For Breakfast, you'll be surprised...
I never saw Art as the main vocalist, as has been repeatedly suggested. They were a duo in every sense when it came to singing.
Artie was the magic behind the sound. Paul was the magic behind the words. Their solo work bears this out.
tommy hall Absolutely
Bridge over troubled water
Art had an unusually sweet voice with gorgeous timbre and control. Paul also had a stellar voice, which he proved in his solo career.
@@linjicakonikon7666 Disagree. Paul made that sound. Put in another vocalist with Artie and it’s not the same. There’s a uniqueness to Simon’s voice that just enhances the harmonies.
Garfunkel should have been like "Whatever you say, Mr. Simon."
Art has always been a pretentious ass who always talked about his instrument ( voice) nauseating 🤮🤮
I will put it this way, Either one or the other on their own would not have been as great as them together. Not to mention their friendship which nourishes the maturing growth mentally for the rest of their lives to build upon.
Garfunkel has an amazing voice and that alone is a mighty instrument. He is very gifted. You cannot put him down for just being a singer. Together this pair were amazing.
I love them both, and I also like each of their solo music. I just wish at this elderly stage in their lives they could just chat about their good times together, unless there were so few to remember. I still have their albums in my vinyl collection, and I still listen to them on occasion.
"Time it was and what a time it was".
I saw both of them together at a party in the Hamptons in '93 or '94 . They weren't playing. Just part of the guest list. They were very nice, quiet, and humble.
I've seen Art perform solo many times, and I even saw his rehearsal of his solo show at Humprey's outdoor venue in San Diego. I was watching by the sound mixer, and Art was displeased with the sound; he left the stage, and suddenly here he was up with me and the sound guy, and he then re-adjusted the audio mix to what he needed. When I saw him in Vancouver, BC, I didn't know he was touring...I just found out when reading the paper while in Seattle; so I went up to B.C..to see the show with orchestra. It had just been post the Dem. convention when Al Gore was nominated, and Art seemed a bit miffed at the big circus show of party nominations, and he commented on it and said: "you know, I don't know what it is we stand for, anymore....."
Simon and Garfunkel were such a big part of my life, Watched like a thousand time "live in Central park".
The irony is that no one thinks of Paul as short. They think of him as one of the few best singer songwriters in history. He's a big man on music street.
Watch the You Can Call Me Al video, funny stuff. Paul Simon next to 6'5" Chevy Chase, what a contrast! Love Paul Simon though, brilliant songwriter.
Excellent perspective.
Men - who have stature issues that women don't have - think of Simon as short.
Yes but it's what he thinks that causes issues, doesn't matter if it's the correct assumption
the fact that the "height thing" was nothing more than a friendly rib that Paul took so hard is really telling
That’s not true, I do think he is short, wonderful musician anyway.
People do forget, or don't know that, though Simon wrote the songs, Garfunkel help arrange many. For example, the song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" had ideas and contributions from Garfunkel that made it even better like the heightened ending. In the end, they were great when the chemistry was working. Definitely one of the greatest duo vocalists ever. They both deserve credit and respect.
One guy was a musical genius and the other a good singer. One needed the other, but the other one was fine alone.
Art was, "a good singer?" It sounds like you might have an axe to grind? Garfunkel was a master on the mic. One of the greatest voices in music history. Cheers.
Absolutely agree. Compare their solo careers. Art never became really relevant again.
Paul still sounds better when singing with Art.

Paul Simon is a musical genius. Art Garfunkle has a great voice. Those are the facts of the matter.
Best friends can make bad enemies. They probably couldn't hate each other if they tried.
Memories of happiness and pain will always be there.
In some ways, they behave like brothers. Deep down, they must have a fondness for each other. You think how the Police broke up, they were all so different. However when they came back together to do some shows, just for the fun of it - maybe to pay some bills, Sting and Stewart just accepted each others idiosyncracies and got on with it, appreciating and celebrating each other's talent. After all that's how you play in the team.
@@Alpha_7227 there so much money that can be made., for there not to be some way to work together shows hos much dislike there is. Simon as the writer prob made a lot more money and prob some friction because of it. The writer always makes way more than anyone

To be solo is the best , specially for Simon. We are individual
I so understand Paul Simon. For he chose Art, he could've chosen anyone for there are millions of good singers out there. Graceland best album ever. I rest my case.
Saw them as duo and solo. I've worked with both of them and they are not the easiest people to work with, mostly because they are perfectionists. Paul is a workaholic and I spent over a year watching him work, it was inspirational. I was able to see how he vocalizes the melody (in a doo wop style) and constantly edits the music until he feels it is right (that takes a long time!) @@busterbiloxi3833 BS. He had a musical career without Simon. Not as popular as Simon's career, but he put out several very good albums without Simon.
@@busterbiloxi3833 Conversely, would Simon have had a career without Garfunkel? Simon only gained ground as a solo artist because he was a big name as one half of Simon and Garfunkel. Fun fact: in the early 60's Columbia Records formed a folk trio named The Pilgrims as an answer to the popular folk trio Peter Paul and Mary at another label.
The bands producer was looking for the right song for its debut album and checked out a potential song by a little known singer songwriter and asked him to record a demo of it for the band. But when he heard the actual demo sung by the singer songwriter and his buddy he realized it could be a hit and gave them a contract to record it themselves, and the band's debut album "Just Arrived" was released without the song.
The singer songwriter was a young Paul Simon, his buddy was Art Garfunkel, the song was " Sounds of Silence".
The lead singer of The Pilgrims who almost got to debut with" Sounds of Silence" was a black former soldier and veteran Broadway actor, singer and dancer named Robert Guillaume.
In the 70's and 80's he went on to a successful tv career starring in two hit sitcoms "Soap" and "Benson".
I never knew that detail before about Sound of Silence.
The song is "The Sound of Silence." The album is "Sounds of Silence."
These two are amazing, both talented as a duo and their solo careers
I’m so glad you featured Annie Nightingale’s legendary gaff. How could she not know that Paul alone wrote the songs?
Art had a fantastic voice. Paul had a good voice and I’d still more than happily listen to him sing songs with no complaints at all but when you pair him with Art it’s something else entirely.
You can’t remove Art without losing a huge amount of what they were.
Still Crazy After All These Years and the Graceland album are better than any S & G for me.

Very few children remain friends for life, because people naturally change.
They simply outgrew each others personalities, and all they had was a business relationship from the time they were adults.
You forgot to mention that they recorded the album Hearts and Bones and Simon subsequently had Artie's vocals erased. That must have stung. Also, I think writing songs suitable for both of them must have felt limiting when Paul wanted to try new things. There was no room for Artie's vocals on the brilliant Graceland album.
Graceland is a superb album. It demonstrates Paul Simon's openness to new sounds and his willingness to collaborate.
Wow, that is interesting. Hearts and Bones is one of my favourite Paul Simon albums, and I had no idea that Art Garfunkel had originally contributed vocals to it.

I can tell my Garfunkel's demeanor that he's not an easy guy.
Art Garfunkel always used to trash talk about Paul Simon and backstabbed him at every opportunity. Paul's a much better singer than Art, who's a naught without Paul Simon.
According to this video Art did some underhanded and demeaning things that I would not have tolerated either.
You left out their brief reunion in 1975 when they got together to record “My Little Town”. This was the only song they recorded then, which is why the B side of the 45 RPM record has two songs instead of just one (one by Paul Simon, the other by Art Garfunkel). The song was also included in both of their solo albums, for they felt that whichever album had the song would be the album that fans would buy. So in fairness they placed it on both.
This is an important part of S & G history that shouldn’t be overlooked!!
Paul sang on a few of Art's solo songs as well.
My Little Town is a great song.
remember this very well........I bought AG's "Breakaway" on cassette.....
shame they couldn't have recorded a whole album while the notoriously hot & cold duo were actually getting along !
There was also a song called "Citizen Of The World" that came out about 20 years ago.
And they did that song with James Taylor as well: (What a) Wonderful World.
So sad. They were amazing together. It sounds like they were both jealous of each other. They should have been each others biggest cheerleader. I still love their music. Paul may be very talented but without Garfunkel his music doesn't move me. But Garfunkel without Simon means no music. So .. . please grow up guys and come back.
All couples have their ups and downs. It’s inherent to being a human being and having character !
You don’t have to love a business partner these guy’s were moving with times love the music and harmonies thank you guy’s now to make some music.
They just wouldn't be Simon and Garfunkle without each other. Art's Voice + Pauls Songwriting is what made them Simon and Garfunkle.
The Concert in central park was a major event in the late 70s. As their songs did ,this event attracted.young new and old fans alike NYC. The spirit of their music was so vast and relatable to everyone's lives in human emotion.
Too bad. They make a team that's bigger than the sum of both parts. I'm glad we've got the music they did in the 60's.
Extraordinary talents. Wish them both well. Legends
May they outlive Mick and Keith??
Paul may be a sneaky back stabbing mouse of a Man but he's a good singer and a great song writer, one of the best of his time.
Art Garfunkel was a great Singer and so-so Songwriter and this led to his obvious jealousy towards Simon.
They met each other in high school at the age of 11 I didn’t know kids use to start high school so much younger back in the day. Kids must have been smarter.
THE "NARRATOR'S" VOICE GIVES ME AN ENORMOUS HEADACHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Went to see Art Garfunkel in Feb. 2014. after the music he held a question & answer session. He was asked what everyone wanted to know," Why the breakup?" His answer was that in one of the films, both he and Paul had appearances & lines. Eventually all of Paul's were cut from the film and Paul went home. The film director kept Art for a long time. It was during this time period that Paul wrote the song," The Only Living Boy in New York". This really hurt Paul's feelings and was the start of the breakup according to Artie.
And so Paul's lines being cut were Artie's fault? Did Paul think Artie should just quit the film because Simon's lines and appearances were cut? Sounds like Paul Simon needs to grow up, what a baby.
Both equally talented and compliment each other in an extraordinary way!
Paul sings, writes songs, plays and arranges songs and plays guitar.

Paul made the right choice.....get rid of toxicity like art.
Simon was a songwriter, musician and a better singer. Garfunkel was obviously jealous of Paul.
Paul had a much more successful solo career.
I’ve just read “Homeward Bound” an excellent Paul Simon biography and they had a pretty strange relationship indeed. Paul was in awe of Artie’s looks and height. Once Simon went solo he still confided in Artie at certain times. While Simon is one of the best singer songwriters of the last 60 years and didn’t really need Artie, just listen to their S&G albums and you’ll be often amazed at the harmonies. I think being in a duo with Artie in the 60s was an essential thing for Simon before he went solo and made even better music.
Paul Simon is truly a talented singer. What is your favorite Paul Simon song?
@@speedlearner I like ‘em all! America is brilliant, 50 ways, hearts and bones, still crazy, my little town, bridge over troubled water, all masterpieces.
Never for a moment do I think Simon's solo music could touch S&G's. He did have an amazing career after the duo broke up, no doubt.
@@larbueno I personally like the boxer song. I also like the song Homeward Bound. Did you ever see Simon and Garfunkel in concert?
Well said, I agree with you apart from saying that Paul's solo output was better
Loved their music........nothing lasts for ever.
Art Garfunkle voice really was the sound simons writting was brilliant. Sad that they used to fight so much. Great duo timeless. Thanks foe the music.🇮🇱
I meant 🇦🇺
Art Garfunkel was a backup singer.
The fact that he even got named on songs was a gift from Paul Simon.
Take G's voice out of the songs and you have a dud song!! He was THE voice talent, while Simon had the inspiration!! Simon would have no gift to give, had he not sung as backup to G!! Go back and listen to the songs they made. G's voice led and had a range Simon could not match!
@@nixl3518 sorry. I good song is a good song how do you think other people get away with covering them as for art Garfunkel being the better singer as the years have went by Paul Simon has got along fine without him
@@stewartbalmer1515 Yes u r right, BUT if you hear G sing something, it's most likely, anyone else's is a lesser version. That has been shown even by Simon giving it a go!!
"Getting along without him" does not make him "better off without him'!! I would say the evidence shows that he struggled very hard to develop an independent sound, even going to SA out of desperation to be inspired!! I would also say that the "second wind" was a lesser experience than the first.
Egos destroyed their combined careers. I would think that Simon would not have gotten the same notoriety or breaks in his profession were he not at first wind as part of the duo!! They both are to blame, but I think Simon had more chips on his shoulder and his character flaws reduced his success.Garfunkel, no different than if they were a married couple, was left with no choice; he knew the inspiration was not his, was angry and reacted. It was a tragedy. that's all that can be said!
Восхищаюсь вашим талантом более пятидесяти лет! Мне семьдесят.
What a tragedy! The two together were beautifully harmonious!
NAH The MUSIC lives ON
This just convinces me that I should’ve chosen my friends more carefully.
No matter how carefully we choose, in the end of the day we're all alone in our own spaces.
You have very little control over choosing your friends. But you actually get to reject the people you do not want to become friends with. Friends are what's left from those you reject!!
Garfunkel without simon - nothin
Simon without Garfunkel - awesome
Garfunkel’s solo albums consist almost exclusively of songs originally done by others.
Art did poke fun at Paul’s height which was a bit cruel since it was Paul’s songwriting that made him a huge singing star.
No doubt their egos robbed the world of many more hits.
We can say what we want but in hindsight the talents of both are the only thing that made it work to a splendid level .good thing they did it before they got feuding. The magic was together . Paul made some exceptional stuff later solo which I believe was revolutionary.
