Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition - Joan of Arc Campaign "A Perfect Martyr" | Hard Playthrough

- This is my playthrough of the last mission from the Joan of Arc campaign in Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition. I'll be placing time stamps for each part of the scenario in the comments section for those looking for a specific part. Enjoy!
Joan of Arc Mission 6 on hard mode is just a freaking mess. No matter how many times I tried, I could not defend the main outpost, so I tried positioning my base next to the chokepoint instead and by turtling that I succeeded in outlasting the AI. I had fun though! Stay tuned for the rest of my Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition Hard Playthrough!
The story of Joan of Arc is awe-inspiring to me, and as such it is one of my favourite campaigns. Some of the missions on hard mode are a little bit on the exhausting side, but rewarding once completed!
If you're up to play some AoE2 or AoE2: DE Multiplayer my Steam friend code is 96935151.

After you destroy Burgundy TC, you can send your foot troops to eliminate their south base, wich is unprotected. Leave the horses behind to defend against English raids and return the rest of your unmounted troops asap. It would make this cenario easier.
I love that your playthroughs aren't what others always do, trying to max this or achievement that or fastest this. Just someone playing and muddling and making mistakes and being...normal. Even if it DID hurt to see the mistakes (or things lacking...like walls. WALLS, man).
Tried this mission the other day and it tilted me so bad. I kept trying to build where burgundy’s main base is and they overrun you at about 22 min if you don’t take out orange and purple. Lessons were learned
That proxy Burgund barrack is disguisting. They always trying to rebuild that.

Me: .....
Man this was impossible to me until I saw your video.
Great strategy to start from the back! That worked wonders. Unconventional but it works to funnel all the enemies in a straight line.
You can loot the berries for quick food (Franks have a berry gathering bonus) and eliminate the purple threat by immediately sending cavalry and siege to the south after capturing their base. Key is to disrupt their gold income so they don't have pesky monks converting your paladins.
This is actually one of the main scenarios I'd like to revisit at some point, as I had a few other starts which started off strong, but I kept getting crippled by the Britons early on because I built too far forward. Behind the river is much easier to defend, but it does set your economy up to be reliant on trash units and selling resources in the market if you don't push out early enough (which I didn't do as well as I aimed to)
Glad this helped though!
@@ShadowCrystallux Thanks! I think the trash units are quite good in this scenario actually. I find myself somewhat short but it wasn't so bad. The gold at the back of the base is useful, so is setting up trade with the defeated purple's market and looting his base.
Researching herbal medicine helps to extend the life of the cavalry you need to snipe off the enemy trebs.
@@ShadowCrystallux In the original edition, I didn't bother to build a base: I went for the flag immediately. I targeted the northwestern sector of the red base. Red's units weren't triggered to defend that sector (for the most part), so the plan worked seamlessly.
@@historyphile8973 I've seen this a few times, never been able to pull it off myself though!
I played this like 16 years ago or so, tried again and i remember it was hard but not THAT hard
Bro this mission in hard mode is disgusting
Horrible mission.. Finally did it on hard today. Just a constant micro slog the whole time, eyes everywhere at once.. The way I did it was to build up in the first base, cripple the base to the north (eventually) then ignore the purples and move west with trebus and a good mix of crossbows, paladins, swordsmen and monks. I didn't even realize I had basically beaten the mission till I saw the circle of flags and remembered the win condition.
Damn, I didn’t know I can start lumbering before siege. Always was stuck by wood/house for long time after settled down.
With the original AoE II you didn't get the wood at first so I had to beat the Burgundians directly to get some. Build around the base in the south, easy to defend. Converted one of the enemy ships and killed the other two (but sunk myself). After beating Shrewsbury in the north I build a harbor there and trained a lot of Paladins and Pikemen, along with some Arbalests that were left and four Trebuchets they travelled with help of a transport ship to the land on the far north. From there it's destroying two towers, a castle and you are near the city wall. That was at moderate though (and my sixth try overall)
Good video, I have another strategy which works quite well. As follows:
1. Press Enter.
2. Type 'Torpedo2' + hit enter.
3. Type 'Torpedo4' + hit enter.
4. Two of the Ai cunts are now dead.
5. Now its a fair fight with you against the English.
Seriously though fuck this level, was it even play tested?!! 10 times I attempted this on hard. Each time I was obliterated despite bottle necking the enemy Ai, building castles, creating units etc all to no avail. The sheer amount of resources at the Ai's disposal. PLUS the fact they use maxed out imperial units (whilst you are zero Castle) makes this scenario nigh on impossible.
I'm all for a challenge but seriously this needs to be updated BIG TIME. I highly doubt the devs stress/play tested this mission.
I should've done this mission before the DLC, they attack with coustilliers now when you first attack their castle and oneshots my cannons lmao
I've actually been thinking about playing this campaign again since the update to see how bad the coustilliers might be 11
@@ShadowCrystallux they appear on the second mission as well, you’re better off leaving them there as they are or you’re gonna have a hard time. At least the hero units are tanky so you can use that as a sponge but otherwhise they one shot your man at arms easily
The only thing that annoys me is that the British is Imp. and way more advanced ahead of me in the beginning. As for the coustilliers there are just 8 of them. They'll be dead before dealing any serious damage anyway. I didn't expect they changed the civ, I got confused a little.
Best strat is to eliminate shrewsbury immediately and then base in theirs, much easier to defend and boom until max paladins then reck burgundy and britton
Funnily enough I did this the first few times I did this mission! I always lost a few too many units and the Britons came with an army that I couldn't then fight. For me, the cheeky boom behind the river ended up working better 11
I think that your strategy should have been to destroy your weakest enemies housing first to cripple their population. Also it’s a good idea to build a castle strategically within an enemies base; provides good cover and fire support and can heal your offensive troops.
This was a great campaign to watch. Will be sure to check out the others as well. Do you plan on playing the original AoE was well?
I'm not entirely sure. Once I finish these campaigns there's quite a few custom campaigns/scenarios that I will probably do 😊
ShadowCrystallux oh that works too =] what other strategy games are you into?
@@StarMarshal every Age of Empires game, Empire Earth, Empires: Dawn of the Modern World, League of Legends, the Total War series - there's plenty more but these are the ones I mainly play 😁
@@ShadowCrystallux Dawn of the Modern World was my jam back in the day! I remember playing that as a kid on the family laptop all night during the summer. Good times.
You play very good. I've really enjoyed it. But why did you remove the death voice of the enemies? I'ts for me the only wrong thing.
01:12:57 LOL Burgundy pikemens is still trying to attack ur villagers even their faction is already resigned. It seems they still prevent U to mine their gold 😂
well this is different. When I attacked the first tower they came at me with crossbowmen, monks and cavaliers
Why didn't you use the market to sell tons of wood for siege weapons? Especially vs burgundy and Shrewsbury.
I have a better strategy
First kill all towers military buildings and castle of burgandy (leave the town center) then head north west to orange and clear it's all units and buildings he will resign (do go near red ) then come to south and clear up remaining burgandians then make lumber camp and chop some trees then make a dock and a transpot ship(clear navy of red with bombard cannon or atleast distract them ) load it with flag cart and some units unload units and bring the cart to destination
Load some units along with flag cart unload units first then
Why didn’t you utilise bowman more?
Excellent strategy mate!
Yeah, this mission was a huge pain in the ass to complete! Thank you :)
Why do i get a horde of purple horses right at the beginning of the game and you don’t?
My kind of girl
this is not hard mode. where are the horseman at 2:45
Is there something wrong with the audio? It sounds echo-y
Hey there! Is there a specific part that you're finding echo-y? I haven't noticed any echo in these videos thus far, and where I've had audio issues I've generally just muted the sound.
Uhmm in the original game on hard mode if you do this the enemy goes through the forest on the south east, they don't give a fuck about the gate you built between Burgundians wall and the trees. They will go straight through southeast and won't stop coming.
Interesting, I wonder if it would do the same now?
Измором взял!!!
I've always admired your gameplay, byt so far this is where I cringed the most.
1. You could have used Shewsbury's market for trade earlier. In that way you could have more gold.
2. Using trash units is okay, but not using siege units during the majority of the play hurts my eyes.
3. Attacking bases without siege is brave, but nothing can beat the bravery of your trash units when you used them to destroy the enemy's castle way back Dracula's third mission... 😆
Yup, this was pretty awful but I pretty much had no idea how to play the game properly back at this time 11
@@ShadowCrystallux using the chokepoint to your advantage was great though
Anyone want to do this mission on hard for me haha I caaant do it :(
I bet you can! Where are you getting stuck?
@@ShadowCrystallux almost a 7 hour game. Finally beat it. Hahah.
@@richardmilligan8033 nice man! Glad you finished it =D
horrible level, I've tried it 3 times on moderate and I can't win
Yeah, it is incredibly difficult. The only reason I won it in this playthrough was because of that base behind the river bringing in much needed resources before I pushed the Burgundian town. Hope you can complete it soon!
@@ShadowCrystallux Destroy burgondy as fast as possible. Because otherwise you get destroyed by halberdier's.
An easy mission made hard because of lousy castle, military buildings placement and no walling, that's all.
Quite noob. It took too long for victory.
Post a video of you doing it faster.
