  • This is my playthrough of the fourth mission from the Bari campaign in Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition. I'll be placing time stamps for each part of the scenario in the comments section for those looking for a specific part. Enjoy!
    Bari mission 4 is actually quite difficult. At one point you're against 4 sieging enemies, and thus you have to act quick to defend the castle! I made quite a few attempts on this mission and to win it I believe you have to liberate Capua pretty much instantly, and ally with the Normans asap to win. The side missions are what really help you win overall. Stay tuned for the rest of my Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition Hard Playthrough!
    The Bari campaign isn't my favourite but overall it's not a bad campaign. The story is great, but a couple of the missions are a bit on the slow end.
    If you're up to play some AoE2 or AoE2: DE Multiplayer my Steam friend code is 96935151.

    It has come to my attention that a number of people do not believe this gameplay is against Hard AI. Luckily AoE2DE records all games by default! I have uploaded a proof video, which has the exact same sequence of events against Capua as this original video with the bar displaying the difficulty.
    Here's the video:
    ua-cam.com/video/f1dwUOmhl9Q/v-deo.html
    All videos have been, and will continue to be against Hard AI. I'm getting back to my playthrough, if anyone needs actual help with a scenario of course I'm happy to help, or if they want to share their story as to how they completed the scenario I'd love to hear it! But these accusations are silly, and a waste of my time.

      The thing is... You did at 2 december 2019. If you try to do exactly same tactic, you will face 2 trebs knocking on your door while you are retaking capua. You have to split your army and lose most of them while doing the same. It has become a really pain in the ass

    Thank you so much for posting this. I would have never figured out to go to capua first. I did change a bit of your strategy though: I kept the town center constantly producing vills so I could fortify between offensive pushes (doubled walls, added towers next to the castle, garrisoned more archers) I also tried ignoring the mercs at first, but then they took the pope's gold instead haha.
    Edit - oh, one more thing I thought was neat for tricking the AI - when you destroy the abbey, build a monastery next to where it was. Put the relics in that one. Wait for the enemy to attack, then after you fend them off, bring the relics back to your castle where its easier to keep them safe. The AI will continue attacking the monastery and its fortifications for a good 15 mins before they figure out whats going on, and by then you've nearly won the scenario. This worked even when they saw me take the relic out of the monastery (though I killed their raiding party ofc).

      Nice going on the monastery! I wouldn't have thought of that myself. Glad this helped 😃

    Hint: Instead of close the walls around the castle with stone, if you make an open labyrinth of cheap palisades the enemy tries to walk without attack, and the castle kills them with a little support for siege units, then defend the castle is easy even in hard difficulty.
    It must be open, if you close it, then the IA destroys it.

    Frankly if you can survive the first 25-30 minutes there's no reason for you to lose. You'd think they would be throwing one last attempt at you with a massive force at 10 minutes-ish but it leaves their base at 5 which is way too little time to be threatening. If anyone can beat this without retaking Capua, allying the knights, taking out the passage, now that would warrant a medal

    • @ShadowCrystallux
      @ShadowCrystallux  4 роки тому

      I didn't think of this, I think maybe a hybrid between the two options may work the best. Like having 4 petards and 1 treb, that way you still have enough food to be training other units after retaking Capua. Glad it helped!

    • @erkocab
      @erkocab 3 роки тому

      @@ShadowCrystallux I think you can also build a dock near the Capua Castle and with it a couple of cannon galleon that can take down the castle. not sure if this option has been eliminated by the devs but if it is still available it certainly saves lots of resources - plus you can use the ships to take out the tower in the river. But having said all this your playthrough showing a standard way of winning was excellent as always

    With a trebuchet, you can hit Orange's Tower from yellow's base and take it down before his army kills the trebuchet, so just spam gold and make 3 trebuchets at start, 2 for blue castle and 1 for orange tower then you're in a good mood to win the game.

  • @alexxxvill69

    Man this mission was very hard. I kept getting attacked from Minute 49 and below but I was able to beat it by walling up and defend. I would bait troops to the castle and had other troops destroy trebs. I defended the whole and won the game I did this hard.

  • @KamleshMallick
    @KamleshMallick 3 роки тому +1

    After destroying Blue Castle and getting them back as an ally, the key here is to go to Imperial age as soon as possible, get some Trebuchets to defend against incoming Trebs.
    And mine as much gold as u can so that you can pay 1000 Gold to Yellow. This is very important. Yellow will take care of incoming Green and Orange.
    That will give u lot of time to defend the castle and at the end it was easy.
    If you delay getting yellow on your side, you will get screwed! Thanks Shadow Crystallux for more awesome game play.

    I don't have DE yet, so I watch your walkthroughs as compensation instead.
    It is stated in the hints that you can't build extra Castles, so it means that you can't produce more Cataphracts quicky, but the thought that you're playing as Byzantines means that you can produce paladins gave me awkward comfort... HAHA

    • @ShadowCrystallux
      @ShadowCrystallux  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah, the reason I stuck to Catas was army comp and Paladin upgrade cost. Byzantine regular Cata is probably as useful as Byzantine Cavalier which means they're still useful without further upgrades imo, even with only having one production building for them!
      Hopefully you're able to get DE soon! I very much recommend it.

    Wait, so trying to build multiple TC's and get an economy going first is wrong? You'd think that going for Imp immediately would hurt your eco too heavily.

    • @ShadowCrystallux
      @ShadowCrystallux  4 роки тому +1

      I think because you don't really have time to get your eco going, you need to pump some units out and make sure Capua is retaken asap. As long as you get the gold ready for the Normans and you have some level of food income, then you should have enough resources in the mean time. They start attacking far too early to do a full or partial boom unfortunately.

    I'm personally having a hard time getting out of my static defensive mindset that the game has lulled me in to for almost every mission x| every other mission it's like build two castles to funnel the enemy in maybe half a dozen horses to take out siege weapons and that's it they can throw anything they want at you, but here I've initially tried my typical boom economy first with some static defenses and turtle till I take em out, I even tried 3 town centers right off the bat to boom faster x| they always come in just before my economy is ready to pump out troops.

    • @ShadowCrystallux
      @ShadowCrystallux  4 роки тому +4

      Yeah, this mission really forces you to play the game quite differently. I personally think the optimal start is somewhere close to how I started the mission (not to sound braggy) by recapturing Capua and paying off the Norman's asap. That takes a scenario where you can be stuck in a 1v5 and turns it into a 3v3, and after that it's pretty easy to take out Orange which leaves you with a 3v2. Your two allies deal with Green, leaving you to deal with Red. Essentially a 1v1 of defend the Castle which is pretty easy!

    • @cocosmomo2073
      @cocosmomo2073 4 роки тому +1

      My latest attempt I tried retaking Capua but I still end up drowning under a sea of tutons and cavaliers and the ai is actually smart, when you circle around them to attack the trebuchets they actually pull some of their army back to defend them

    • @ShadowCrystallux
      @ShadowCrystallux  4 роки тому +1

      @@cocosmomo2073 were you training Cataphracts and a couple of Trebs early on when retaking Capua? I also highly recommend getting a couple of towers in the castle area super early, as Teutonic Knights don't cope well with arrow fire and it provides one more target that isn't your castle. I hope you're successful in your next run!

    • @cocosmomo2073
      @cocosmomo2073 4 роки тому +1

      can't take Capua without that early imperial and trebuchets. man this mission reminds me of Age of Mythology The Titans on Titan difficulty. like 5 minutes to prepare and then a crazy tug of war where you constantly pump out units from like 4 barrackses to keep up with waves of ai xD

    • @cocosmomo2073
      @cocosmomo2073 4 роки тому +2

      I've managed to beat it. really after the first two or three waves the reds stopped sending trebuchets which gave me a lot of breathing room. I took Capua paid off the knights just before they join the enemy and they really saved me from the the green trebuchets x| but yeah after that nobody even touched the castle. my two villagers mining the stone pass finished not too long after that. im thinking maybe taking down the monks first is a good idea as hey give you 1000 gold if you destroy they monastery then use it pay off the knights? if instead of 1 hour I needed to hold out for an hour and 5 minutes I would have taken out the reds, could have done it in time with a bit more optimized play, already had the economy to start pumping out dozens of heavy cavalry archers and once you mass like 40 of them nothing can stop you

      @@thelonepainter4760 pretty much! Whilst I was aging up I built Cataphracts, and as soon as I hit Imperial I built 2 Trebs to deal with Capua. You can't really afford to be building much else and it's the only combination which covers every unit type relatively well. Onagers could be a pretty good option as well, but they're easier to destroy and more expensive to set up than Trebs + Cats because Mangonel's just won't cut it alone.
      Also worth noting that having any units is better than none, and that the Byzantines get cheaper Halbs/Skirms so if you're starting to fall behind/run out of gold make sure to start spamming these, using the Halbs to take out siege and Paladins and Skirms for everything else. I didn't personally run into this issue but I can definitely see it happening if your start doesn't go well. Hope this helps!
