Fluid Painting - Epoxy Resin Like Finish using Liquitex Gloss Varnish
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 лип 2018
- Glossy epoxy-resin like finish without using resin! Most people stop at 2 or 3 coats of Liquitex gloss varnish. I show you how you can achieve a super gloss finish on your fluid paintings or acrylic paintings by using my technique. Yes, it's many coats of varnish but I also throw in some little tricks I found along the way to really help your fluid acrylic paintings looks top notch.
This is a tutorial and my way of applying the Liquitex gloss varnish. I sped up the dry time at first (if you don't feel comfortable doing that stick to the 3 hour window that the manufacturer recommends) to help those coats bond together quickly.
Fluid painting is an easy way to relieve stress and just have fun! I hope you enjoy this tutorial.
Liquitex gloss varnish can be purchased online on Amazon, your art store, Michael's Craft Store and other fine retailers.

o my goodness it is so good to see you back I have been worried great technique looks wonderful
Awe thanks so much Bethany. I am glad you like it.
Best video I've seen yet on Liquitex . I wasn't sure how long to wait between coats. It's easy to work with and no bad fumes to breathe. I always buy on sale so it doesn't break the bank. Thank You...
You’re welcome Josie!
Thank you for the demo and welcome back
Thanks Brigitte!
You crack me up!!
Thanks for your demo. Think I might try that too
I know my initial comment was a year ago but thought you might be interested in what I do. I use the high gloss. I pour quite a lot on and brush the excess off brushing very lightly one way and then the other way, then the sides. It takes less than 30 seconds. I find it starts to dry really quickly after a minute. I leave each coat to dry over night but you only need 3 or 4 coats. It’s also very forgiving. I dropped a tube of paint on it while I was varnishing one time. I had to leave it as it was already drying. The following day, I couldn’t see where I had dropped the tube as it had totally smoothed out. I love the stuff. It gives your art another dimension. It looks just like resin but it has no weight. Resin is very heavy. I won’t use anything else.
That’s so awesome to hear that it’s working out for you so well.
Thanks for sharing about Liquitex Gloss , the finish looks great.🌺
Thank you Gloria. I really love the regular gloss finish. I ordered some high gloss from Liquitex but it has created some little bubbles that won't come out. I hope they dry into the painting
Exactly the video I was looking for! Thanks so much!🎨
You’re so welcome Sarah!! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. ❤️❤️
Great tips! Thank you!
Great information Carl, I'm going to give it a try.
Great job Carl, thanks for sharing with us ✨
You’re welcome Ana! ❤️
Yay a new video!!!! I always enjoy your videos and wish you would do more. :)
I needed this! Thank you sooo much for the video!!!💗💗💗
You are very welcome!! ❤️
Thanks for the video! And a super funny ending 😂
Great video. I have been a fan of the Liquitex Glossy Varnish but have not done more than 3 coats...looking at your finished painting I can't imagine why it didn't occur to me to put more coats on. Sometimes the obvious thing to do is not so obvious...lol! Thanks for the video. Glad to see you back, it's been awhile and I really look forward to your videos.
You’re welcome. Yeah I always wanted to find something that was super glossy, easy to use, water based, easy cleanup, no mixing and fast drying. The process is pretty slow but all in all it’s not much different than epoxy would be. Be sure not to fan dry.
Lookin good & love the water clean up.
Awesome
🤣😎
The water clean up is fantastic! Takes me about 1 minute.
Yeah! I've never done more than one coat. Can't believe it never occurred to me to do more. Brilliant! Thanks for sharing.
You’re so welcome Patty. ❤️
Love your videos, humor, and information~
Thank you so much Carol
Great video! You have a very fun and likable personality!😃
Thanks a million! :)
Hi Carl , I needed a good laugh and you delivered as usual .
Have a great day Carl .
John from Vancouver Island
Thank you!!!!
I really love this! Sometimes I want to get a glossy look on a regular painting. I don’t like using my resin on them I like to save it for my resin pours! Love your channel! I’m going to use this on a amazing Astronaut piece I have thanks so much!!
Awesome! I'm glad it could help in any way
Exactly the video I was looking for thank you
You’re so very welcome! Thanks for watching
You might want to hit it with a heat gun to pop bubbles. Especially over a mile high 😉You’re right, it might have been the wood off-gassing. Best way to varnish is to brush in one direction only. Next coat in opposite direction and so on for each layer. This makes it much easier to see you’ve gotten each spot. Overlap brush strokes as well. Really nice paintings, Carl.
You always make me laugh love it
Love the bloopers! Made my day 😂
Haha thanks Wendy! ❤️❤️
Just watched your dad humor gets me everytime!
Thanks. I try and make paintings not so boring heehee
Your art is awsome! Congrats. 😁
Thanks so much Adelina!!
I’m so allergic/sensitive to epoxy, this is such a great alternative. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome Lynn!
Ty.....awesome
No... No. You are awesome. :)
Lollll.... 😂😂😂😂😂😂 wowwww awesome video demonstration and really great humor... God bless you richly....
Thank you so much Olivia!
So funny!!! My fav is your bloopers!!! I'm hooked on resin. I hate the stickiness but i found stonecoat art resin 40.00 for a half gal using a checkout code atd and it has no odor at all!!! It's awesome!! Thanks for the laughs and as always i love your work!!!
Oh dang! That's a great price. I've heard good things about that resin. I can't wait to try some paintings with that kind
Thanks for posting this video. Wish I would have seen this before i messed up two of my paintings with resin.
Oh dang! Yeah, i have several sitting around that are messed up from the resin. But I don't wanna give up on it. I just haven't had the extra money to try it more.
You are fantastic! I did a painting very similar to your abstract painting.
Awe Michele! YOU are fantastic!!
Good to see you back Carl.
Have had to take a break on my painting but hoping this product will be good for me to use. How is the odor? Odors do a number on me.
Odor is very very low and mild. I paint in the dining room and nobody even notices the odor
Thanks for sharing this Carl, I also enjoy your videos because you're funny. I'm going to give this a try. I'm in Canada and resin is a bit pricey to put on all of my paintings 😆
Thank you for tripping Mary Jane! LOL!! 😆😝😝 and thank you for watching. Yes, I think this is a lot cheaper than pouring resin.
Hahahaha!!!! Hey Carl it’s GREAT to see ya! I didn’t know that look was possible without resin so, Kudos! And you are hilarious 😆😂🤣!!!! I adore the voices! Take care 😊
Haha thanks Stephanie. Yeah I’ve been working on getting resin like coating with the resin for awhile now. I think I’ve found it. I have some other tricks up my sleeve I wanna try.
Carl Mazur - I can’t wait! 😊
Okay.... watched 3 videos so far, and, well.... got a total artistic bro-mance happening... educational And entertaining.... terrific combo...
He's very charismatic lol
Bahaha! Thanks Patrick!
Welcome back 👍
Thanks so much! I've gotta get back to it!
Missed you here in England 😊
Thanks so much Teresa. That’s very sweet. ❤️
Bloopers = hot mess LOL Great video...thanks!
Hahaha! You're welcome Eva!
Looks beautiful Carl...glad to see you back to painting...I love watching my mentor painting...lol
You’re too kind. It feels good to have another video up and going. I don’t know why the last three I made tanked. Maybe because they’re too large of canvas?
Well I dont know about the last ones, but I do know that this one turned out awesome...I love how shiny it is...and Im sure the last ones were beautiful also...
Thank you so so much. ❤️ If you want to check out the purple one and the one with the magenta color through it. Large pours. Like 4 foot wide! Those are hanging in our house and I cannot wait to do more. They’re just unreal. I took one to a gallery and they want to do a showing of the larger ones.
The glossy pieces you said you liked I did those in coordination with the large piece colors just in case people want to buy a smaller size I’ll already have 4 ready to go. I’m trying to think ahead of what buyers would like.
I’m gonna do some smaller purple ones too. I’m excited!
One downside is I love them too much lol! 😆
Carl Mazur I can understand why...theres been a couple here lately that have finally turned out the way that I had envisioned them to be and so I know what you're saying about not wanting to part with them but it's good to know that other people enjoy your work just as much as you do
Carl Mazur And I would love to see pics of the bigger ones...bet they are outstanding...
That was good info. BTW, you are funny :)
Why thank you Dalia!
I use the Liquitex high gloss varnish which is even glossier. I use max 4 coats
Isn't it great stuff?!
Hi Carl...I thank you for the very informative video and I also wondered about bubbles. Did you have to torch at all or use a heat gun? I love that I can get that resin look with the high gloss varnish and will give your technique a go! I have read some of the other comments and noticed you haven’t responded to many and I figured you are probably a very busy and popular guy but then I read one reply you made about your health. I do hope you are feeling better. I hope you find yourself in front of the canvases once again laughing and enjoying life. Peace! Xx
Thank you Noralyn, I really appreciate that. Yeah, I am going through a divorce right now and it sucks big time. So lots of life changes in store for me. I hope to get back to painting soon. I use a little embossing tool heat gun for my projects.
Hi Carl, thank you for putting this video together. I love your work. I used Winsor & Newton spray gloss varnish on two of my paintings. But the result was somewhat bland. I was wondering if it is safe to use the Liquitex in your video over that spray varnish? I also have another painting with really thick paint and didn't know if this was a good fit for a very textured picture. It is a peacock tail and the paint is thick and raised.
Great Video Karl, thank you so much for sharing. You said you just bought some Liquitex High Gloss Varnish. Please let us know if this has the same result as the Liquitex Gloss Varnish. I already have the high gloss one, so am curious to know if it has the same result.
Sure thing. If I were you I would go ahead and try on a very small surface area. But that's just me talkin haha
Hi Carl. Thanks for your helpful video. I just tried Liquitex gloss varnish on a pour. Previously i was using a cheaper brand Sargent
I was surprised that the Liquitex came out of the bottle as clear as glass and no milkiness. It was a beautiful product but a very strong odour was in the room afterwards. Very strong. Have you had any issues with this.?
Beautiful I love that Liquitex gloss varnish. I use only 2 coats 🤔
Yeah, it's pretty cool stuff. I'm looking at these paintings on the wall. I walk by and touch them all the time because they're so addictive to view and feel. The high gloss really makes a difference. I used the "high gloss" version of Liquitex and I had some real bubble issues. :( On a really cool painting too. Not bad just small ones... But still.
Any yellowing at all.
I take it you dont have any issues with air bubbles or torching?? I'm loving that it's not toxic unlike resin! 😊
Yeah, I love using the Liquitex gloss varnishes. They rock! I don't seem to have issues with bubbling or air bubbles.
Thanks for the tips. How do you keep the cheap hard board from warping?
I didn't do anything to the board but I did notice when I put that many coats of gloss varnish on there that is kinda straightened things out LOL
LOL @ the bloopers ...bwahhahhaah :)
Thank you and im glad you liked them!
Great video! 😊 Could this be done on a coffee table after painting to give it a glassy finish? Or would things stick to it if set on top of the table?
Definitely less intimidating then epoxy. Thanks for the demo.
You're very welcome. It's been awhile since I've done a video. Getting back to the groove of things.
Great video carl!!! Was sorry to hear about health issues. Hope you're coping. If your up to it, can you share what brush youre using? Have found it challenging to get a brush with the right thickness. Bristles are either too thin and split even when using the flattened angle or too thick. The foam brushes tend to make bubbles unless you go very slowly.
I use a cheap $1 brush that looks kinda like horse hairs in it but I think they’re synthetic. I have to be careful I don’t leave any brush hairs behind.
I love you🤣🤣😍
Thank you Maria!
Carl..I have a 100 x50 cm canvas to varnish. Would I just do the brush strokes at an expansive angle like you do?
Great instructional video, thank you! Sometimes, no matter how careful I am, I get brush marks with the varnish. If I continue to add layers, will these brush marks disappear? Please say yes. :)
Yes. When I get a few brush marks or even a run that has occurred, I step back and wait it out. Trying to brush it out too late can cause problems. So I come back over again and again and it fills right in.
Also, I’ve noticed that after about 15-20 days the gloss really really slowly levels out and gets harder as it cures. Then all those little imperfections go away, mostly. Sometimes I’ll see little ones still there but I’d have to get in just the right light. So it’s non-important.
Thanks for watching and thank you for sharing.
I tried using a small paint roller and that seems to solve the brush stroke problems
What kind of brush are you using? I haven't had good luck with buying big brushes, seems they lose fibers in the paint/varnish. What brand do you use??
mmm. I do agree with less time between coatings, but for your reason of time. its a benefit alright, but the real reason is that a next coach on a touch dry layer will adhere better.
Awesome! What type of brush are you using.
A really super cheap $2 brush. It’s a synthetic nylon brush. I just remembered I had a video clip showing what brush I used. I forgot to put that in there. Whoops!!
Anyone know if I can use a varnish like this on top of a resin painting? UV protection
Carl, have you tried using a silicone makeup pad to help reduce and smooth out paint brush marks?
I haven't. I don't get any brush marks though as quick as I apply it the gloss really settles down and leaves it baby smooth :)
Hi. Thank you for excellent explanation!! Is this same product as liquitex gloss medium and varnish? I cant seem to find vids about that though.
Pouring medium is different than the gloss varnish so be careful. You don’t want to by pouring medium to final seal your painting. That would be horrible. Pouring medium is used to mix with your paint while you’re painting. The gloss varnish is what you want for your final coat
Carl Mazur the product i bought name is Liquitex gloss medium and varnish....i tried it as a varnish vs polycrylic ive been using to varnish and was not at all impressed w/ performance of liquitex stuff
Is this self leveling?
I have a few paintings that weren’t level while drying when I varnished... Any way to fix it???
CAN THIS BE DONE WITH THE HIGH GLOSS VERSION??
I used the Liquitex gloss medium and varnish with the green label. After my first coat dried, over time the surface broke off into pieces like some kind of glossy Pangea map. It was an experiment as I only had maybe a tsp of the stuff and added a touch of water. Was the problem adding water? Or was it not enough varnish? If I add more coats, do you think the look will improve?
Wendy, I’m not an expert at coating paintings (as I’ve only done about 30 pieces) but my overall impression of what happened in your case is you needed an isolation coat before you did the matte finish. Isolated coats separate the coat from the acrylics.
Many presume that the gloss coats can be an isolation coat and are fine but the matte finish isn’t. Golden brand makes a special gel for that purpose.
That’s my input. A local art store might have more detail of what happened and how to remedy. If it can be. That way you can feel more comfortable with 2 or more opinions on what to do before applying more product.
Carl Mazur thank you! 😁
Carl! How do you pack your paintings for shows/ long storage? Because I know extended contact with anything on these thick coats of varnish can cause dimples. Help!!
Help me too!! I used Liquitex gloss finish. Wrapped my painting in butcher paper from Hobby Lobby to take to my first art show. Everything was fine 36 hours later unloading and setting up.
2day show. It rained and became very humid. I was inside a building, but the doors were open to look more welcoming.
At the end, I wrapped all my paintings up again. When I unpacked and removed the butcher paper....shiny side to the painted surface, like parchment paper or freezer paper, the paper had stuck to all the paintings here and there. It adhered to the varnish. I tried washing it off and every other chemical I could think of. I finally had to use an emery board and slowly and tediously sand off any paper stuck to the varnish.
Was sooooo bummed.
Any advice?
(The paintings I resined were fine)
Thank you Carl!
Jeanne
How do you keep from getting brush marks?
Pam, I lay it on fast. And it seems to get rid of brush marks.
Lol, funny guy,! Actually made me laugh. Learned something. Can it be used on wood?
Glad I made you smile! Yeah, you can paint on wood
Suggest using foam brushes, but only from the package to prevent dust, and other foreign particles to accumulate on brushes. Also, why not apply several coats on raw canvas before your pour or painting.
Hmm, I’m not sure if I completely understand what you’re meaning. Several coats before the pour would leave the canvas real glossy and the paint wouldn’t stick I would think. But heck I love experimenting!
Keep the voices!!! Makes the video that much better to watch! Laughed at the 1.3 million 😂
Thank you Frannie!! I’ll keep being a ham!
P.s. thank you so so much for this info! I'm too poor to buy resin right now and this looks gorgeous on my pieces and close to what I wanted!!
Yes!! Resin is way expensive! For us “pour” people.
Does this harden as soon as it dries? I have tried doing this with poring medium but it stayed soft for over a month.
It hardens on the first coat in about 50 minutes. Some of the later coats might be a bit slower because they’ll stay tacky. And you don’t wanna coat the later coats too soon or I have started to get tiny cracks. But really those have all dried out flat too. This stuff is great to work with and forgiving too. It’s like applying wet plastic to a canvas. Just keep coating till glossy. Super glossy.
I tried this and results came out great...tried again and my first coat cracked the paint :( that ever happen to you? Any suggestions?
Darnell, did you happen to dry it fast with a fan or have something blowing on it like a ceiling fan?
I used the Liquitex Gloss Varnish. However, I didn't get the same result that you did. The gloss looks nice but I have a bunch of tiny bumps. I don't know if it was the brush, the sponge (I tried both). Is there a way to get rid of the bumps? Any guess as to what caused the bumps? My acrylic pour was on a 6x6 ceramic tile. :( Thank you C
Christine... Oh crud! Sorry to hear that.
You know I was just using some "high gloss" varnish by Liquitex and I kept getting these little bubbles in mine too. I am not sure what makes them, but I haven't had that problem with the regular gloss varnish.
Thank you for your reply. I will try the regular gloss varnish. Have a good weekend. C
Does the liquitex gloss varnish yellow over time?
No. It’s not supposed to.
Does it have a strong smell? And what did you do about the residual silicone?
It hardly smells at all. Only if my nose is close to the bottle. It covered over like really great. I didn’t clean it or anything in between video takes. But I let that painting sit for 6 or more months. This stuff is really great about silicone residue. Regardless any silicone should be cleaned off first. I know epoxy is really reactive to silicone and can be very difficult to work with any silicone in the paint.
So if you can't put one on top of another, how do you travel with them? I do art fairs and would need a way to transport them. TIA
After 30 days you should be just fine to have them touch but I wouldn’t have them together for long periods as the heat and cold will make them eventually stick together.
I would always place a light sheet of foam type material or like bubble wrap or cloth in between paintings. I always do that when showing off pieces. Even a sheet of paper would be better than nothing.
Reason why I said that in the video is because I had leaned a couple of finished pieces next to each other just barely and they stuck. Fortunately it wasn’t bad because I barely had them touching. If they would’ve been leaned up side to side I would’ve ruined them. Just want people to be aware and careful of that issue. ❤️
Would never recommend putting paint to paint on anything for that matter. Or gloss coat to gloss coat.
Carl Mazur ok thank you
What is cost comparison between varnish & resin?
A whole gallon of resin can be $100 or more. At least. While a gallon of Liquitex Gloss Varnish is $89 on Amazon Prime. It will go pretty dang far too. I have used about a gallon and I’ve done over 20 paintings and at least 6 of those paintings are very large pieces... Like over 4 foot wide. So I would say it goes about 2 to 3 times the amount or linear volume than epoxy does. I’m not an expert on measuring but that’s my guess. When I used epoxy on the few paintings I did it didn’t last that long at all... although I’m a total newbie to resin pours.
Carl, have you tried doing this with Liquitex High Gloss Varnish? It might take fewer layers to get the same look.
It might... I haven't ever used that product.
I just ordered some
So i tried the high gloss and its a bit trickier to work with, plus i got these tiny bubbles that dried into the painting. Not too happy about that part
I use a damp car wash sponge, so I don't get bubbles, but that makes the coat(s) really thin. Perhaps you should torch lightly after you apply the high gloss varnish.
When ordering the gloss varnish, I see a liquitex high gloss varnish, have you tried it? It may take less coats.
I am not sure Deborah. I haven't tried the "high gloss" version ever. I have some ordered.
Carl Mazur I also order it. I like this, it looks fantastic! Im totally frightened of resin, even though I’ve ordered it twice, it’s just sitting there looking at me. Lol. As always great work !
Deborah, so i tried the high gloss varnish... and i dont know. It been leaving little bubbles on the canvas. Grrr. Dont know whats up with that but im not liking it
So does the stickiness ever go away?
Debra, most definitely! It's gets very smooth to the touch.
After my second coat I noticed there are a lot of ridges in the coat - not small brush marks but heavy ridges as if it set before it leveled out- why
Charles, did you happen to have a ceiling fan on? Or AC unit nearby? That’s what would cause that for sure. Usually the coat will dry really slow from outside in.
I have had little tiny tiny ridges barely noticeable form before. But nothing like you’re talking about
CAN YOU USE THAT PRODUCT ON WOOD ???
I’m not the go to source for that answer. But, I’ve been told that wood needs to be sealed first then the acrylic paint and then the Gloss Varnish. What I’ve done with wood planks is prime them first, sand and then paint with acrylics. Then seal coat it after it dries good. I haven’t had any problems with mine. I would ask you to research a bit more before trying this on wood. Just to be safe.
Carl are you still doing videos? I keep watching for some, but nothing. Hope all is well.
Thanks so so so much! I have NOT done any new videos. Battled a five month long depression 😭 from painting and just other weird stuff. Is it the guy thing called “mid-life crisis” 🤪 or what?? IDK!! But it sucks! I’m bipolar too so that doesn’t help.
On a good note! I will be getting back to painting very soon! I’ve got some new ideas and some new inspiration too. ❤️
Sure do applaud all of the love and concerns. You rock! ❤️❤️❤️ It inspires me everyday to just keep trying on any level.
@@CarlMazur well I sure hope you pull out of it soon, because I miss watching you. 💖💖
Not 1.3 million!! How about 2.6 TRILLION Planet Mars dollars?
Oh..... what a beautiful Shine!! Just like it’s a beautiful Morning in Oklahoma!
I’m lazy! 😉. Is there any other product that only takes one coat?
I have used DecoArt Triple Thick but I found it to yellow... (Maybe it was my painting and not the triple thick gloss coat), but I found it to be really thick coat like that.
Carl Mazur well shoot! This is beautiful but not for me! Thank you!
Did I do it completely wrong?? I'm using the same type of gloss, but when I put it on, I used my brush and even with it being completely dried, it caused it to make streaks 😭 It's messed up and so I tried to just pour it on like paint cause I can't use a brush, and now it have big blotches of bubbles and my white is a light orange color from where I had red it in 😭 please tell me what I did wrong
Oh no! I’m so sorry you’ve had problems with this. 😑 When you say “same type of gloss” do you mean the same brand? I’ve only worked with this brand. I’ve used some other brands that tend to leave more streaks and dry super fast even while working fast.
Big blotches of bubbles could be caused from not letting the silicone dry and work it’s way out of the paint. Usually when using silicone in the paint it should be dried for at least 10-15 days if not more depending on the painting and how much silicone used. Then cleaned off with an rubbing alcohol rag. Lightly. I check to make sure there’s no spots left with silicone on the painting because if so it will leave huge bubble type areas where the silicone reacts to the sealer.
Sounds like the gloss coating was picking up some of the paint and removing it as you applied it for what was causing the orange color.
How long did you let the painting dry?
@@CarlMazur Yeah I use the same brand, and ohh I see 😬 The bubbles probably were the silicone then, because I only let it dry for about.. day and a half? Maybe almost 2 days? It felt dry, but it could of just been something else 😬😂 Definitely didn't wait 15 days though, so now I know to do that next time. I felt like, so sad cause I was so excited cause it was the first time trying the gloss and I was like "this'll make it look sooo much better!" and then I saw that it smeared and got upset, but at least now I know that's not why it messed up, I just didn't wait nearly long enough 😂 Thank you!
Alyssa, I figured that might be it. I would think you can still try and salvage what you have. Unless the orange color is just too much. If you give it lots of time to dry and keep wiping the silicone away then you should be able to cover those pesky spots where the silicone was. Just use a light alcohol rag on it. Make sure it’s all off before you try and coat it again.
Alyssa Tucker this happened to me as well:((( and was my favourite art(((
"Go ahed n doo it" 😆😆😆
Man I just can't afford liquitex gloss! I don't know what to use besides minwax polyacrylic and its being bought out by Sherman Williams...but I digress...
I only buy mine from Michaels if I have a 40% or 50% off coupon.
Yes, I admit the Liquitex Gloss Varnish is WAAAY expensive especially since I’m on a low budget. But I just love what it does.
