    Great idea with the tin and foil. I took it a step further. I use a plastic container with a piece of cardboard either side both meeting in the middle at the bottom. Just used masking tape to keep them in place.The v slot is already formed so it's easy to blend the foil to that shape.. Thanks for the great videos !

    Great video! One thing I've learned---always make sure your painting is totally dry. I paint strictly in oil and will let my paintings sit for a full year before varnishing. If you are going to ship your paintings, always elevate them in the shipping box so that absolutely nothing will touch the canvas. I shipped a two year old painting and was told by the purchaser that some of the tissue used in packing had touched the canvas and stuck fast! After two years!! He returned it, I fixed and shipped it back. Big bummer that!

      I paint mostly in acrylics and watercolors, but have just starting dabbling in oils and I have been told to wait 6 months...but 2 years!?
      That's kind of mind boggling...

    Love the Gloss varnish from Winsor & Newton and Amsterdam on an aerosol can for the final varnish. Liquitex probably have something similar. Use a gloss medium as a middle layer between painting and final varnish.
    Use the Liquitex gloss medium and varnish for glazing while painting. :-)
    Thanks for the tutorial. You have a real pleasant speaking voice.

    The flip-side of the fast re-brushing technique is that it will create permanent clouding in the varnish if done too much, too long, or once the varnish has already begun drying. This is especially so with more matte varnishes. Once a cloudy varnish sets, there's no way to fix it, unless the varnish is soluble/non-permanent.

    My 2 cents: On that fear factor. I ALWAYS test a new procedure or product on a test sample. Take a scrap board/canvas, apply some acrylic/oil, and, in this case, varnish it. If it messes up you just saved ruining your hard work. If it does work then you should now have a much greater confidence level in varnishing your work.
    How do you think the painting you did would look with a glossier varnish in the water? Too much contrast? Just a thought.

    Thank you for making this video. I can tell you about my varnish misadventures and perhaps someone might avoid doing my mistakes. Started recently a number of new projects, trying new things, so am a varnish noob.
    Have a wood slate that i painted red, in acrylics. Bought 2 cans of different varnish at a local store that has a massive sellout, 70%off... Thought i would use the satin kind, because didn't want it too shiny.
    Krylon Satin was my 1st try. I sprayed after my paint got dry. It was a horrible disaster. Either i didn't shake the can well, or it was too old or whatever else, but in some places the spray left like a white foamy residue, horrible to look at. it had to go.
    i scrapped it all, repainted with acrylics, decided to try the glossy spray. It was Winsor and Newton. it was way better but... in my stupidity, i left the thing to dry on the balcony, where all dust from the street and pollen from vegetation went to settle cosily in my freshly varnished slate.
    Sanded the whole thing again, repainted, sprayed gloss again. Shiny turned out wasn't bad at all, in theory. But the next day, realized it is nowhere from being dry. every time i would tap slightly with my finger, it would leave a huge fingerprint even though i some places it felt hard and sliding. was trying to buffer with nail polishing buffer, because the surface was not perfect. The can didn't say how long i would have to wait. So i found out the hard way, 4 days min is the answer, but in reality more. Am still working on that piece, it drives me nuts.

    I did see brush stroke lines on the right hand side of your painting as you were moving it. I get those sometimes on mine and I don't use the Liquitex stuff, because it isn't that much better. Just putting it out there. I don't think that there is a perfect way of varnishing that doesn't create a problem. Just gotta do the best we can with what we have. Too many are going crazy using Liquitex.

    Two questions since I have no idea. If I varnish a painting and someone touches it, will it leave a finger print or will the oil on the fingers weaken the varnish? And second question, does the varnish feel like plastic over the painting or is it really a thin layer?

    • @PainterInYou
      @PainterInYou  6 років тому +3

      The oil of the person's fingers should not weaken it. If you look close, i am sure you could see a finger print. The varnish will feel and appear like a thin plasticy coat over the painting. I am guessing you haven't seen or felt a varnished painting before and are trying to get an idea of the feel and texture of the finished product. Id compare it to a finished piece of wood furniture that is polyurethaned...same sort of idea.

    Thanks for the advice. I just finished painting a 36 x 48 inch painting and have varnished twice using a large sponge but still have streaks throughout. Do you have any other suggestions I could use. Would a large foam roller work better? Your help is appreciated.

    • @PainterInYou
      @PainterInYou  4 роки тому

      I'd definitely not use a roller. It will leave texture all over the painting. Either a fine foam brush or a normal bristle brush should be used. Ive never used a sponge, but my guess is that could be contributing to streaks.
      Also remember to MOVE QUICKLY and dont go over a section you already did. Just keep moving forward and quickly.

    Do you do the 2nd coat of varnish in the same direction, say the width of the painting again, or do you turn the canvas and do the length. Ive seen some where they turn the canvas and go the opposite direction for the next coat (like a crisscrossing). Thank you!

    This, I must say, is a very well organised approach to the Varnish Process.
    I have had a bit of issues w/ my Soluvar Matte Varnish.
    I tried a Conservation Spay Varnish, specifically for “ Conservator’s they had said “ .. this did absolutely nothing to aid the Beauty of the Painting in the Varnish Process. Thank you so very much for your wonderful, actual products used and methodology applied into your Painting. Greatly appreciated 🌟🧡⭐️
    May I ask if the form you were using was in an oil ? As perhaps this was my mistake. I applied my Soluvar light
    in a “ criss- cross fashion “ , as I was taught by my mentor, years ago. I do my best to read, order books and keep many variations of Varnish in my Studio, for specific paintings. All are not painted the same way nor the same age in Conservation/ Restoration.
    It was a joy to view your work! I subscribe to your channel upon the ending of your video. I was that impressed :). You are so good. Please do keep us up to date, as my mentor passed away March 14, 1984.... have been on my own since. Thank you for your fabulous video. Exceptional!!
    🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. 🌟🧡⭐️🌺🌸🌅

    I will be applying this method on my next finished painting. I varnished a painting the other method in which you touch upon with only going in one direction.. That method created streaks and a uneven finish in my painting. What are your thoughts on applying an isolation get coat medium prior to a varnish for conservation purposes? Also non-removable varnish vs removable?

    • @PainterInYou
      @PainterInYou  5 років тому +1

      I have never done an isolation coat, but would like to explore that.
      For oil paintings the varnish i use is removable. For acrylic, i use permanent.
      My thoughts are....you probably won't need to remove and revarnish for about 100 years and I'll be dead be then! 😂😂

    What about a REMOVABLE varnish in case at some point in the future someone might want to do conservation on one of your paintings? What would you suggest?

    Thank you Chris. I have been dreading to varnish anymore of my paintings due to the spray on varnish ruining a few of my painting with uneven spray drying. I will definitely try your method on all of my paintings in the future. Question about how to deal with pallet knife painting that is raised and uneven. is there a tutorial on varnishing those? Thanks again for your videos and tutorials!

      Thuy Dao Glad you found value in this video! Though i have not varnished a painting with very thick paint, I have varnished oil paintings with some thicker spots layed on moderately thick. This will cause a foam brush to flake when rubbed against it, which is why I recommend using a natural hair brush for oil paintings. I assume this would work for a thick impasto painting, but I would test it out on a scrap canvas first.

    Hi! Terrific video! Very good detail! I have a question for you. Do you clean your acrylic paintings before varnishing and if so, how do you clean your acrylic painting. Thank you so very much!

    Thanks for sharing your tips on how you varnish your paintings. Can you use that same sponge brush technique when your using the gloss varnish? Thanks!

    So helpful and nice simple instructions. 👍 I am about to varnish my first acrylic painting. So much detail, it took me about a year to paint it and didn't want to ruin it. I noticed that other instructional videos spoke of a sealer to put on before vanishing or they say your varnishes could yellow and if you ever need to remove the varnish you need this layer also. Do you recommended it as well?

    Great video. Can anyone help me with a recurring problem. I use Winsor & Newton satin varnish, on MDF board. I'm convinced the oil painting is dry and I have a clean brush. All goes fine and then I varnish a dark colour and it bubbles and goes milky. The milkiness fades and I carefully brush out bubbles but when dry and viewed sideways or in artificial light you can see inconsistencies in the problem area. This never used to happen and I can't think why it does it.

      Hi, if you've not figured this out already then maybe I can help. This happened to me years ago, found out that I wasnt leaving painting to dry long enough... seriously, even paintings I've done in acrylics (painted thinly) I leave for 2 weeks minimum. Even though in an hour or less they may be touch dry, they are wet still underneath. Hope this helps.

    I recommend using a coat of gloss varnish first, then a coat of satin varnish and then a coat of matt varnish.

    I love this video. You have explained it very nicely. I have a question. I have one patched coating of glaze on my acrylic painting. Can I do the second layer with Liquitex satin varnish? Thanks!

    Hi i use mod podge on my canvases and they turn out well, i like it. So my bf did a huge canvas with alot of black in it, he used mod podge too:/ 2 coats. And it has glare and you can see all the strokes. Do you have any suggestions? On how to fix this..
