    Hey everyone! Just to let you know I put language subtitles for every language on UA-cam (labor intensive, whew!!). So now if you are from France, Germany, Romania, China, Japan or wherever... You will be able to listen in and watch the video. I've had so many requests for this I had to do it. Enjoy!

    Brilliant idea to have an actual beginner try this. When experienced people do videos they don't always think of the most basic things. When she is adding the paint you can see her hesitating and you encourage her to add more. The first time I tried this I wished I had someone next to me saying when I had enough of everything.

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  6 років тому +2

      Thanks Michelle. Yeah, it's a bit nerve racking at first but this style of painting is really fun once you get the hang of it. So many options out there now. I am still working on some of the basics. There's some out there that are too detailed for my personal liking but that's okay

    Loved this video thank you!!! I’d like to add that it’s also helpful to tighten the canvas. Spray water and use a blow dryer (not heat tool) to tighten the canvas. Do this on both sides front and back.

    Carl, This is the BEST tutorial I have seen for pouring, and I it's great that you take the time to answer people's questions. I wanted to see if my Granddaughter and her friends would like to do this for her 14th birthday activity, but couldn't find a tutorial that I thought would work for them ~ now I have. Your video just might get a few young people interested in painting! Thank you so much!

    I am SO GLAD that someone finally explained the paint thickness, preparation, etc. There are THOUSANDS of pours on UA-cam. This is the First, and so far ONLY video that went into the mixing and explanation of why, etc. THANK YOU!!

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  3 роки тому

      Wow!! What a comment! Thank you. I work really hard to try and explain everything so people can get the gist of it all. Once you get those steps down you can really have a consistent method of painting and your paints will dry just like when you put it on the canvas. That’s one of the main things I’ve found out. Because you can have a neat painting when it’s wet but then it’ll dry weird later on. I know there are lots of videos out there but it took me forever to find out the process too. People like to speed up the videos and skip all the teaching steps. I’m glad you enjoyed it. ❤️

    I really liked this tutorial because the minor mistakes were not edited out. We learn by doing, after all. That said, some of the best outcomes result from "minor mistakes." I've done a few dirty pours on round canvases and they ended up lovely yet kind of planetary. That is because I used too much silicone. The shape of the canvas made a difference in my case.

    Try mixing the silver with the Floetrol before adding the glue. There may be something in the silver paint thats polymerizing the pva in the mix causing it to clump up like eggs in hot water. Once whatever is causing that to gum up is diluted in the Floetrol you may be able to introduce the pva without it seizing.

    Thanks. I have a whole load of these small square canvases I think they are 12x12, and wanted to use them for this, because I am really addicted to colour rather than form. But having watched a lot of pours was really alarmed at what I thought would be a massive waste of really expensive paint, as it all adds up, well at least it does for me. But I could see from your video that actually the paint used is a fairly modest amount stretched by the floetrol and glue and water. I feel very reassured by this. Also that it can be done seated, and with a minimum of mess. This helps dispel the fear factor! I have had past experience with acrylics and know they can be a disaster to get off things they should not be on.

    Wow! This is a great tutorial! More people should use this approach. Instead of the 'expert' doing it and showing it have an inexperienced person do it while the expert instructs. I felt like I was there with you :-) Very approachable for us viewers. I'll be giving this a try - actually will get my two oldest grandkids involved. They'd enjoy this.

    I was taught with giant sized push pins, maybe 1.5 -2" (4-5 cm)? Who knew the little ones would do! In the creators defense, her canvas was quite large, using two extra along the long sides. Thanks for sharing your tut!
    I'm not a huge fan of blue, but converting my RV into a tiny home the fabric the factory used has navy blue in it. I added turquoise to the navy with towels and pot holders in the kitchen area, and now I find this paint tut, with my color scheme! Love when things fall into place and seem to meant to be. I've purchased supplies for making some canvas, but not taken the leap of faith into the actual work! Chickennnnn chicken!

    The most important thing before painting. prime the canvas with the medium, otherwise the edge absorbs the paint. Otherwise well explained.

    • @lisaf2544
      @lisaf2544 4 роки тому +14

      Do you mean the flotrol type medium( or glue as he is using) or just a paint ? Should the paint have the flotrol added before base coating canvas, or just the acrylic itself? leave wet or dry prior to pouring? So many questions, Sorry probably dumb questions but dont know if ya dont ask right?!

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  4 роки тому +13

      I only add the Floetrol afterwards. I don’t prime a canvas ever. I buy mine preprimed. I mix the Floetrol after I mix the acrylic paint with the glue first. Then add Floetrol and mix. It’ll be awesome!

      That simply isn't true. Tiktus is an experienced pourer. I have to think Tiktus meant that the canvas has to have been Gesso primed, and as far as I know, most people buy their canvases already primed with Gesso.

    I wish you had explained the purpose of the floetrol, glue, and silicone. It was an amazing video to learn but not sure the purpose of the additives and what they do

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  6 років тому +123

      Sorry about that Amber. Many people want to know. The glue acts as a binder to the paint. You can use glue without using the Floetrol. Floetrol is a paint conditioner... an additive.
      I personally like using them together because I feel it makes the paint flow really nice and it also makes the painting dry nice too. When I started out, too many times I would come back and my painting would look so much different than what I had after I had just poured it. When I started using the glue and the Floetrol I had really really good success with my paintings looking the same as when I had just poured it.
      The silicone is what makes the reaction for the cells to appear. It’s kind of like adding oil to water. It’s going to bubble up when you put it in water. Kind of the same affect when you put it in acrylic paint.

    • @deannfrey3469

      Amber Ostrander agreed. Why the glue?

    • @CarlMazur
      @CarlMazur  5 років тому +43

      @@deannfrey3469 The glue acts as a binder to the paint. You can use glue without using the Floetrol. Floetrol is a paint conditioner... an additive. Seriously, people give me loads of crap for using both Floetrol AND Glue at the same time. Many don't believe you need both at all. Well... I have done LOTS of paintings with them both and it's what has worked really great for me and I always want to share my little tips. Try mixing the glue first with the paint to make sure you get a nice bind to the paint, then add the Floetrol and mix it good. Can add a little bit of distilled water too, just not too much.
      Here's a large pour I did without any silicone! Just... Floetrol, Liquitex pouring medium and a little water (only if needed). Bam! One of my favorite all time paintings.
      ua-cam.com/video/j5VWclhtVa8/v-deo.html
      So all in all... I don't see what friends are talking about when they say you shouldn't use Floetrol if you're using another pouring medium, that's "it's wasteful" and whatever. My experience of working with paint pouring tells me to do what I want to do it's my paintings. Dry time is when the real answers come out and that's where I had my best successes with using Floetrol and glue together. The paint on the canvas dried nice and flat without any cracking or crazing, no bubbles most the time, paint stays flexible, application is way easier, better coverage, no blank spots, chemicals react good together when using the silicone, etc etc I could go on and on. Also I live in a very dry dry area in the Utah high desert at 6,000 ft and the paintings I did with JUST glue and water did not ever turn out as nice as when i used Floetrol and glue together. Sometimes I would get lucky here and there... But who wants here and there? Consistency for me.
      That's my two cents on the whole thing lol.
      Here's the first big pour I did and used the pouring medium by liquitex and Floetrol together. I was so nervous doing this the first time. haha

    Wonderful video, thank you for sharing it with us. I learned a lot....& what few questions I did have, the answers were easily found just reading through your extensive & very detailed replies to comments. I'm a painter myself(mostly furniture) & I find when I'm teaching someone, typically just family & friends, I tend to forget to explain bits of detail as I'm more focused on the visual of what's happening in front of me. So you taking the time to come back & explain all the 'ingredients' so thoroughly was very much appreciated.
