my school is doing this musical and I’m on the stage crew but whenever the cast practices this song I’m just like “A B C D- god this dudes a genius E F”
It's so hard to truly appreciate this song unless you see it live. Most shows have some kind of effect where you see the letters visually as they're sung throughout the song. A lot of shows have blocks that get pushed out with the letters, one I saw recently had these really glowy letters on cards, it's truly mindblowing.
I HAVE to listen to it on repeat, all the songs from Matilda actually. I’m the student stage manager for the Matilda production here. I just get to listen to all the music being sung over and over during rehearsal.
This scene was mindblowing !! the way they pushed letters in the holes of the gates while singing the alphabet and climbing on the letters boxs was really spectacular
I went to see this show live. The songs were okay but this is the one that stuck out to me the most. The song is pretty cool itself but as they were singing two boys were climbing up the gate while letters from the alphabet were being pushed into holes in the gate beneath them and each step they made they stepped on that letter. It was a truly epic sight to witness, the rest of my friends just talked about Mrs Trunchbull and such afterwards so I didn't bother to bring up this musical number
me and my friend Alexa died when miss trunchbull came out on the scooter yelling "maggots". I've seen this twice this year. one of my favourite musicals!
So you think you're A-ble To survive this mess by B-ing a prince or a princess You will soon C There's no escaping trage-D. We did this show at my school and it was so much fun. It was raining and we were all running around barefoot in the rain singing Bruce, and nowhere else would it be so socially acceptable to burst out singing in the rain. It was so much fun but we got in trouble for being all wet when we had to go on in 20 mins. We all ran to the school bathrooms and used the hand dryers to dry our hair before we changed into our costumes. Revolting children was the best song we did but the entire play was just amazing. A lot of us actually cried after the last show and now because of coronavirus we probably can't put on a school show, which is really upsetting because the play is the highlight of my year.
This kinda reminds me of my middle school. It wasn't ALL bad, but my 8th grade LAL teacher was pretty much a combination of the Trunchbull and Professor Umbridge from Harry Potter.
For a while I was like, It would be cool if they did the letter z And then I realised that, while where I am, z is pronounced zeeOther places pronounce it Zed Phys. Ed was the letter z in the hidden alphabet
I have to sing this with the other big kids. Try to sing from ''Like you I was curious'' to the end of the song and try to tell me you weren't struggling for breath (no taking a breather in the middle of the line a.ka. ''And if you cry *breath* there will be double)
This is basically my school! It's so strict. We're not allowed to wear: Frilly or knee high socks No earrings No ribbons on shoes or headbands None uniform day is banned We have to stand up when a certain member of staff comes into the room Every year group have different ties Every year group are separated on different yards. Not allowed to die our hair any unatural colours or dip dye it Girls can't have the hair cut shorter then the ears Boys can't have patterns on their hair No white socks Dt's can be up to 5:00 and we finish at 2:45 No make up
+RemzieBradford11 Similar for us, but because our school is so traditional, girls have to wear skirts and boys must wear trousers as well as boys having to do rugby, hockey and cricket and girls hockey, netball and tennis. Also school is from 8-20 to 5-10 with matches on Saturdays (usually in the mornings).
I thought this song meaning is about bullying but now I can understand it as being the older students of the school warning the newer students new to the school that's so sad
My teacher asked me to write a letter to the new sixth graders and I wrote down the lyrics to this song. They freaked. My friend's brother actually went running around the halls looking for the Torture Room. :)
Gawd its been a while since I last heard this. I only came back to this because I preformed two songs from this musical with an ensemble. We did miracle and then this one. Brings back gooood memories :3
like seriously how clever can you even be!!! this is amazing!!! i saw the play in london tonight and it was brilliant!! i just couldnt!! its definitely my favourite play! and im american so it was even more of a treat! I LOVED IT!
I once went to a musical theatre summer camp which would have an acting lesson, a singing lesson and a dance lesson every day for five days, on the first day we had dance first in the morning which was the hardest and the second day we had it last so we started telling a guy who wasn't in on the first day about it and then started singing this, absolute banger
Here's the lyrics with the letters put in where they appear: So you think you're A-ble To survive this mess by B-ing a prince or a princess? You will soon C There's no escaping trage-D. I’m doing this song in a summer show in England 🏴. There’s two parts to the show. Matilda the musical and Queen- we will rock you. I’m so glad I’m doing this.
Saw this yesterday in Edinburgh, and like the top comment said the sequence with the climbing and the letters of the alphabet will stick for me for months I’m sure.
The choreography is so creative and amazing. If you hear during the second time they sing the chorus, there are background singers emphasizing certain letters, they use letter blocks and stick in light up ones into these gates. It's fantastic.
^^ Correction, both of you are technically right. It is "Living 'ell" like "Hell" but with a British accent. They're using a play on the accent itself to assist the alphabetical theme.
Who else is here because it always gets stuck in your head but you didnt know what they're saying for the fast part about how "if you cry it will be double" etc?
LUCKY! I go to a private catholic school and we cant even wear bracelets, necklaces, earrings larger then dimes, ribbons, or even any shoes that arent black leather. In the younger grades, we werent even allowed to have our hair down!
That moment when you notice the genius behind the lyrics.
Chatterwell alphabet -cough- figured this out when I was 9 -cough-
I had never realised it before I've seen the show. I couldn't believe how genius it was. Tim Minchin is a songwriter on another level.
my school is doing this musical and I’m on the stage crew but whenever the cast practices this song I’m just like “A B C D- god this dudes a genius E F”
Ikr i noticed when i watched the origanal(soz if i spelled it wrong) the 2nd time And i lmao
Ikrkrkkrkr

I have seen this live. But no letter blocks. Yet I did see a UA-cam episode with the letters
@Moon-has-pawz11 last December, we go to a play every December
*listens to song on repeat until I get sick of it*
*memorizes song after hearing it twice*
*never gets tired of it*
Story of my life^

I saw it in london with my school :) ghe part that was my school's fave (and mine) was, TELLY and BACKWARDS! from Michael XD
Mimi Lolkins it was by far my favorite school when I saw it
the Bruce bogtrotter song is a better song imo but the choreography and secret alphabet in this puts it way above
IMO Quiet is the best song
me and my friend Alexa died when miss trunchbull came out on the scooter yelling "maggots". I've seen this twice this year. one of my favourite musicals!
TIM MINCHIN IS A BLOODY GENIUS
Me: **Casually listening to the Matilda soundtrack while brushing**
School song: **Plays**
Me: **Violently whacking head with hairbrush**
Omg yess
I felt that
6 years later, I'm still listening to this song in 2019
same
Same here
2020 🥴😂❤️
2020
I’m listening to it in 2021
I love the hidden alphabet
in the performance the showed the letters in shining building blocks. It was a nice touch.
Cool
Aimee Mitchell yes I am doing this musical at school and it only just got pointed out for me today!!
Same!
Aimee Mitchell me to

I never thought about it that way
Natalia Burrell That's how they do it in the broadway show! They have blocks with each of the letters :)
happybrunette555 I've never seen it but I will soon enough
Natalia Burrell You're definitely going to enjoy it!!
it's ZEE
I wish someone told me this stuff when I started school
I know
+Camandado Roper - Tyler great someone agrees
I know
same here, trunchball has put me in chokey so many times
LOL

This literally describes my school life like
+Cia Celestia (Not Kirie Goshima) mine 2
Well yeah this is the school song
Mmh
whoever wrote this is so smart
+Tia Reynolds Tim Minchin. He is indeed a genius.
+Tia Reynolds I agree, this is a master piece!
he's also Australian which is really cool
I love Matilda the Musical. It's one of my favorites. I love this song. It's probably my favorite.
This continues to be the smartest song I've ever heard.
Favorite part of the musical.
Celestine Buendia me too
This kinda reminds me of my middle school. It wasn't ALL bad, but my 8th grade LAL teacher was pretty much a combination of the Trunchbull and Professor Umbridge from Harry Potter.
Ick. That sounds bad.
Skitty Cecil poor thing. Sending you my wand to help defeat umbrige !!!
Skitty Cecil they should have played this when umbrage first came to the school
Umbridge is way worse
Can I just skip around the school while blasting this at full volume?
THATS WHAT I DID!!! 😂😂😂
Tanya Reverie Rafanan
BAHAHAHAHA
Xd maybe at leavers day
For my concert we're doing revolting children. I accidentally sung this song, still don't see a issue. Jk
Charlotte Nettle I have to sing that also.
Definitely my favourite matilda song ^.^
+Nianbo Zhang it's my favourite tooooooooo😍
HiGuysItsThea same
I love it
This song is just making fun of how the english language words are not spelled the exact same way their pronounced, love it
For a while I was like, It would be cool if they did the letter z
And then I realised that, while where I am, z is pronounced zeeOther places pronounce it Zed
Phys. Ed was the letter z in the hidden alphabet
Exactly, Phy-Z-Ed
No! It's Phys (Z) ed! Because in Britain they pronounce "Z" as "Zed"...
Asian Nutella That is like, exactly what I said. 'Z' as 'Zed'
that's literally what they said.
I have to sing this with the other big kids. Try to sing from ''Like you I was curious'' to the end of the song and try to tell me you weren't struggling for breath (no taking a breather in the middle of the line a.ka. ''And if you cry *breath* there will be double)
we performed this today at school and the dancing to this song was everything!
When you actually watch this, they show the alphabet a lot clearer and its really well done!! Definitely a must see musical.
This is basically my school! It's so strict.
We're not allowed to wear:
Frilly or knee high socks
No earrings
No ribbons on shoes or headbands
None uniform day is banned
We have to stand up when a certain member of staff comes into the room
Every year group have different ties
Every year group are separated on different yards.
Not allowed to die our hair any unatural colours or dip dye it
Girls can't have the hair cut shorter then the ears
Boys can't have patterns on their hair
No white socks
Dt's can be up to 5:00 and we finish at 2:45
No make up
+RemzieBradford11 That sounds tough.
+RemzieBradford11 That's the same with my school and most over British high schools too
+RemzieBradford11 Similar for us, but because our school is so traditional, girls have to wear skirts and boys must wear trousers as well as boys having to do rugby, hockey and cricket and girls hockey, netball and tennis. Also school is from 8-20 to 5-10 with matches on Saturdays (usually in the mornings).
your school I feel for u
I can do all of that
I sing this to the new kids every year.
Just to scare them :D
COLDBLOODED
*Evil laugh*
+TheNekoThatKnew when I become a senior in high school I'm going to get my choir friends, choir teacher, principle to do this for the freshmen
I want to do that too!
+TheNekoThatKnew OMG IMMA DO THAT
WOW!! I love the way they wrote this song!! I manged to decode the hidden alphabet! :D
It's not Hidden ?? That's the point of the song 😂😂
Toki Terror It is kinda hidden unless you’ve seen the actual show, in which case the blocks make it very obvious the purpose.
I thought this song meaning is about bullying but now I can understand it as being the older students of the school warning the newer students new to the school that's so sad
THANK YOU SO MUCH 🙏🙏🙏🙏 for posting this!!! I needed this so much so I can audition for Matilda in my school! Wish me luck!!!
First day of 8th grade. Might just sing this to the new sixth graders
me on my first day of 10th grade to the freshmen
My teacher asked me to write a letter to the new sixth graders and I wrote down the lyrics to this song. They freaked. My friend's brother actually went running around the halls looking for the Torture Room. :)
OMG
Cloe. YOU ARE AMAZING! I am in 6th grade and I want to sing this to the new kindergartens. CAUSE YOUR LIFE AS YOU KNOW IT IS ANCIENT HISTORY!
yep that is the same thing I'm going to sing to the new freshmen kids coming into high school
News reporter: so hows school?
me: school???!
News reporter: *yes*
me: 1:06
*GUESS WHO'S IN THE MUSICAL AS THE PART OF A BIG KID*
_-but im four foot freaking eleven how-_
Me I'm just 142 cm I don't know how I got to the big kids =∆= but it was fun because the theme of our dance was bullying
Lol I got placed into the big kid because of my height I would have been a small kid according to how my teacher split it
I have drama class and we're gonna perform this today in the concert.. Super nervouse..and excited too!
4 yrs later how was it?
8 years later I’m performing in spet
This helped :,) I have to learn this for a school musical so thank you
Prologue.... Don't do 2 lines in a row
My mummy says I'm a miracle
I love this song! I started learning it for my school concert and I love it!!
3:35 my reaction to toys r us closing.
Im pretty sure that at 2:09 it is, "You better learn to listen" not lesson, its just a cockney accent (Type of british accent)
Gawd its been a while since I last heard this. I only came back to this because I preformed two songs from this musical with an ensemble. We did miracle and then this one. Brings back gooood memories :3
I love you doing. These lyrical vids. Good job!
You should do one where the second time through you mark out all the letters in the words, you know, like "H-ient history" and "P-ling of the bell".
They do, the boys in the background sing the letter so you can hear it
I love this song, it's so clever :)
Using this to study for my parts in the musical I’m playing this year at my school- BRITISH ACCENTS BOYS!!!
like seriously how clever can you even be!!! this is amazing!!! i saw the play in london tonight and it was brilliant!! i just couldnt!! its definitely my favourite play! and im american so it was even more of a treat! I LOVED IT!
It's "you'd better learn to listen kid" not 'you'd better learn a lesson kid' just thought I'd say.
Tomo 42
its both of them
It clearly says "learn a lesson" in this version.
David S. Pumpkins I know, but it's wrong.
Tom I think they meant it to be “you better learn a lesson kid” so that way they will be cautious of what they say
This really helped me due to me doing this on stage so thanks for this
I did his for my year 6 assembly last year.. omg i was laughing so hard at this song 😂😂
I’m doing it for my school musical
we just did auditions for this musical in my school, callbacks are next week and I'm learning all the lyrics to this
2:13 is when the true goodness starts and we all know we keep repeating that one part
I have to sing this infront of 2000 people on stage 😭😫
Oh I’m sure 7 did good
U
Same
OH GOD I WOUKD BE SCARED
I need to do it too 😮
The genius of the lyrics is crazy
Yesssss now I can practice young voices at home now!
Here's the lyrics with the letters put in where they appear:
So you think you're A-ble
To survive this mess by B-ing a prince or a princess?
You will soon C
There's no escaping trage-D.
And E-ven
If you put in heaps of F-ort
You're just wasting ener-G
'Cause your life as you know it is H-ient history.
I
Have suffered in this J-l
I've been trapped inside this K-ge for ages
This living L,
But if I try I can rem-M-ber
Back before my life had N-ded
Before my happy days were O-ver
Before I first heard the P-ling of the bell.
Like you I was Q-rious
So innocent I R-sked a thousand questions
But unl-S you want to suffer listen up
And I will T-ch you a thing or two.
U, listen here, my dear
You'll be punished so se-V-rely If you step out of line
And if you cry it will be W should stay out of trouble
And remember to be X-tremely careful
Y?
Y? Y? Y? Did you hear what he said?
Just you wait for phy-Z!
I remember when I sung this in my school production, im not crying you are
I love it! The musical's amazing
I’m doing this song in a summer show in England 🏴. There’s two parts to the show. Matilda the musical and Queen- we will rock you. I’m so glad I’m doing this.
Love it, I am learning it in a school group. Great help!!
'What's Phy-z?' 'Physical Education!' Love the accents!

'Just you wait for Phys.Ed.'
Pfft, shouldve said Maths.
What!? Maths is awesome!
Poppy Saunders Haha, not in my opinion! I find it really hard.
Larka Flame oh really I love it; it's easy!
Poppy Saunders Hopefully I'll get better as time goes on of course aha
Larka Flame hmph
Amazing singing this song for school and absolutely love it
This actually fire 🔥
helped a lot thx
Saw this yesterday in Edinburgh, and like the top comment said the sequence with the climbing and the letters of the alphabet will stick for me for months I’m sure.
They're singing the alphabet during 2:16 - 3:30...that's pretty epic.
What happened to Z?
"just you wait for fiz ed" is meant to be the 'Z' sound
I did not notice that..
simone lim
i did
In Britain, we pronounce the letter z as "zed" so it works with phys.ed
yeah cause im from wales i pronounce it like that plus the musicals based in england
this song is my favorite song out of all of them! love it
such good songs in this play, genius!
If this doesn't describe my elementary school years, I don't know what does. Bad times, man.
This is for this for my school musical we’re practicing xxx
The choreography is so creative and amazing. If you hear during the second time they sing the chorus, there are background singers emphasizing certain letters, they use letter blocks and stick in light up ones into these gates. It's fantastic.
this song lyrics is the best. i luv it
I love the Matilda musical i sing it all the time when I am happy
Im french and I live in California with my son and my girlfriend, my son is almost 2 and he almost speaks french and english, this is his fav song
Omg this makes me so wanna go see Matilda
btw "this living L" should be written as "this living 'ell" (as in hell, but dropping the h)
No, actually- it plays in with the alphabet theme so I think it works both as "ell" and "L".
^^ Correction, both of you are technically right. It is "Living 'ell" like "Hell" but with a British accent. They're using a play on the accent itself to assist the alphabetical theme.
TheKtwStudios That's literally what I said..
Eliza Keating : pay attention it’s the alphabet so your think you A-ble to .. B-eing a prince or ..
I can't be only one in 2024 I'm obsessed with this song 😅
