Sheffield City Hall is a Grade II* listed building in Sheffield City Centre, England which dominates Barker's Pool, one of Sheffield's central squares. It was built and is owned by Sheffield City Council but is now managed by the Sheffield City Trust, under a 99 year lease and is currently operated by Sheffield International Venues as a venue for concerts and other events in its various rooms.
The building was designed in 1920 by E. Vincent Harris but construction was delayed 8 years because of the economic climate in the early 1920s.
Eventually construction started with the laying of the foundation stone on 27 June 1929 and the City Hall was officially opened on 22 September 1932.
It was originally proposed in 1916 as a Memorial Hall to commemorate the dead of the Great War but by the time of completion the name had changed to Sheffield City Hall, after some years of controversy.
During the Second World War a bomb exploded in Barker's Pool, damaging the pillars of the building. The scars of the explosion can still be seen to this day.
In 2005, the City Hall and its surroundings were refurbished and re-developed at a cost of £12.5 million.

Oh the memories that brought back, I saw The Beatles, The Animals, Adam Faith, Acker Bilk, Sister Rosetta Tharp, Muddy Waters, Sonny Terry and Browny McGee, The Stones etc. etc. etc. The fondest and funniest memory was when I was giving my friend Winnie a lift in my second hand Fiat 500D going round the War Memorial in Barker's Pool when the floor fell out on Winnie's side (Winnie was a woman of size). It was a Friday at 5.30 pm in the middle of commuter time, cars were allowed then, cars were queuing behind us, horns were blowing and we couldn't stop laughing as the police arrived and were struggling to lift her out of the hole. Happy days!

I'm from Sheffield but have lived abroad for many years and I have a little quibble about your naming of the halls.I remember the Oval hall as being the main 2000 seater which you entered from the front and the smaller 500 seat capacity hall at the back was called the Memorial hall.

Yep. I saw many live bands play in the Oval Hall in the seventies, including Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy and Elton John. Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it.

Those package tours during the 60s! Never missed spotting coaches as they arrive, watching out our school windows, opposite the rear of the City Hall. (Central Tech School, where once young Joe Cocker attended. A few years before me.)

@@SheffieldVideos I could've included Pete Gill (formerly of Saxon & Motorhead). Joe was the 1st from there to 'make it'. - Weren't HL more linked to King Teds?
