The 2025 BMW 5-series has lost some of the sports-sedan sharpness of earlier generations, but it remains a strong contender among mid-size luxury sedans due to its high-end cabin and sophisticated technology. It sits in the comfortable center of the BMW sedan lineup, above the small 3-series and below the big and ultra-luxurious 7-series. Plush front and back seats are ideal for commuting and road trips, and the dashboard is packed with digital displays to keep the driver informed and passengers delighted. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard, but you can upgrade to a turbocharged inline-six or a plug-in hybrid powertrain with 483 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard on all models save the base. The good news is that BMW has restored at least some of its executive sedan's driving performance. It will be up to the future M5 sports sedan (reviewed separately) to provide the 5er family with a complete serving of horsepower, athleticism, and thrills-which we are confident will happen. For those who prefer quiet comfort, the 5-series will be just as satisfying as its competitors, the Audi A6, Genesis G80, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.The 5-series is available in 530i, 540i, and 550e trim levels, with the 530i using a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and rear- or all-wheel drive. The 540i comes standard with all-wheel drive and a 375-hp turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. Both are powered by a 48-volt hybrid system. The plug-in hybrid 550e is powered by an inline six and an electric motor that produce 483 horsepower; all-wheel drive is standard. In our experience with a 530i, the ride is smooth while still delivering a sensation of modest athleticism. Cornering grip is acceptable, especially with the M Sport package's improved suspension. Speaking of the M Sport package, it also has improved brakes, resulting in a remarkable 156-foot stop from 70 mph on our test course.
