This is one of my favorite mysteries because it was just so benign and literally no one got hurt, the mystery is just "what the fuck was that about?"
YEP. Just a silly little man in a costume, a little freaky but thats it really.
This show is GAY and gay
Every now and then I'll forget about it until I come across a video like this, and I always have a good laugh. The whole thing is so bizarre and I love it.
@@AC-th4ci Truly just a great prank. They could've done *anything* and legit scarred people, but at most they showed a butt and made people confused.

Honestly, the fact that one of these hijacks happened in the middle of a Doctor Who episode must've been funny with how many people probably thought it was just a really, really weird episode
I thought the same thing lol. “Oh this is a new villain, interesting” or “oh they’re doing the 4th wall break thing again”

It's very fitting that the second high jacking interrupted a Doctor Who episode because something completely bizarre interrupting a normal broadcast is something that would totally start the plot of an episode of Doctor Who where it would be revealed aliens did it.
That's what I was thinking. If this had happened in Britain it'd definitely be an episode. 😂
@@stormfaring I will be very disappointed in Russel if he doesn't make an episode based on this.
While not exactly the same you could technically call the episode where the alien tries to absorb people through the TV during the Queen's Coronation a TV Hijacking ep 😂
Very David Tennant's first episode, the christmas episode where the aliens take over the tv and control people through blood control!
I got into Doctor Who 5 months ago.
Glad I was prepared for this episode.
Shane has the vocal mannerisms of a gandpa, carnie, and snake oil salesman combined. There’s a creak to it, and a softness. I believe any word he says
this is so specific and so accurate
Not a combination I would’ve come up with on my own, but I can definitely hear it

I loved watching Ryan's reaction to the 2nd hijacking b/c one can just imagine all the people originally watching it having the exact same reactions.
Yes me as well! Loved it!

I knew they were going to do some sort of interruption, but I was not expecting that 😂
had to have seen it coming, but still floored me 😂

Considering the Professor is canonically a time traveler, there is a very real possibility that he WAS the real Max Headroom, or at least involved in the scheme. Perhaps Holo-Professor hijacking today's episode was a confession?
hey lol
they're gonna have to retape the end of this episode because the mystery is officially SOLVED!

The hijacking did happen during an episode of Doctor who so maybe it was him just poking fun at another time traveler
Professor bulwar smythe would be the best cameo ever

The Max Headroom incident scares me more than a lot of other mysteries like this. There’s just something so terrifying about the blank expression of the mask staring at you
I think ultimately it’s a harmless prank and even a bit funny but yeah, I can’t imagine being up at night watching tv, maybe dozing off a bit and then seeing the uncanny mask and hearing that distorted laughter. It’s just a bit of a shock
I was young and thinking what a weird commercial
I'm irrationally scared of Max Headroom

the sound definitely doesn't help. it's so creepy and sounds exactly like the sinister middle between hysterical laughter and sobbing.

I really hope they do an episode of Havana Syndrome. I think they would have a lot of fun with it, especially as it was probably mass hysteria (which is a running theme for them).
@@yelhsasokolova8561less so disturbing, more of just confusing tbh. It was basically a cluster of spontaneous symptoms that mostly included like head and hearing issues that initially broke out in a US/Canadian embassy in Havana Cuba in 2016.
Nobody really knows what caused it, but there’s a lot of theories like radio waves, microwave weapons, pesticides and of course everyone’s favorite, aliens.

My theory for this case has always been that this was a college friend group's doing. As an art student who knows his crowd well, this seems like something a couple of art school students would do. They could've easily asked some programmer friends to be in on it, filmed this in a storage locker or something, took the recordings to some other building, and hijacked local news for a while. This doesn't solve who exactly is behind it but it makes sense in my head.
Same! It takes an art student to know one! I went to AIP, had a film and broadcasting department and a lot of smart kids, reminds me of them, or my brothers friends at CCAD
My personal theory is that it was a group of people who used to work at the stations in question. I think they got fired for reasons they felt were unjust and wanted to make a point of how they felt about their former employers.
my thoughts exactly! at my uni the film, theatre and broadcasting/techie departments are close together so we get loads of weird stuff like this. my friend group is 5 close-knit techies and artists who would be insane enough to do this

Actually, I think that's probably a good reason WHY nobody has come forward. It's just kinda silly and stupid and easy to just brush off and forget about. Anytime you would hear about it or be reminded about it somehow, that's just one rare off chance to have a smug little chuckle to yourself before going on with your life again.
if kids were up watching TV past 9pm that's on the parents. they could have easily jammed the broadcast at kid tv watching time and they didn't

@@rosemadder5547 that argument doesn't make much sense because no matter how many views a UA-cam video gets, it's still a UA-cam video. It's not a case that circulates in the mainstream media. You aren't seeing an anniversary update about it on CNN. Considering the people involved are probably in their 40s or older now, how much are you really going to care about a UA-cam investigation? I've been a radio technician and radio station operator for years now. I can say that it was stunningly simple to pull this off. I can guarantee this is how it happened.
Back in 1987, television was still broadcasting in analog, meaning there was no encryption available to protect a signal.
Each television channel corresponds to a certain amount of radio frequency spectrum that it broadcasts on. The sound and picture portions broadcast on separate frequencies.
Each TV station follows the same transmission flow. First, the studio sends out a signal to the transmitter site, using what is known as an STL signal (studio-to-transmitter link) which is always broadcast at a much lower power. That is then relayed by the main TV transmitter at vastly higher power, which is what you see on a TV receiver.
Literally ALL they needed to do was figure out what STL frequencies WGN and WTTW used, and buy (or borrow, or steal) what is known as an STL transmitter (also known as an exciter, sometimes) and boom, now the main TV transmitter is broadcasting that picture rather than the one being sent out by the studio. They didn't even need to have a more powerful STL transmitter, they just needed to be closer than the studio STL was and point the transmitters' antenna directly at the TV's antenna tower (which admittedly would be difficult from miles away, which makes me believe they were pretty damn close to the tower at the time of the hijacking).
The reason the first hijacking lacked audio could be due to a few reasons. One: they simply had an issue sending audio into the STL transmitter. Two: they recorded the first clip without audio. Or three: they couldn't hijack the audio STL frequency properly.
With all that being said, it takes a really well-read radio/TV hobbyist to know this sort of stuff. STL frequencies, however, weren't usually kept private, as many TV stations used to sign off the air at night, and were required by law to state their visual and aural frequencies AND their STL frequencies. So it is entirely possible than an intrepid (if not a bit unhinged) nerd with access to high-end and highly specific transmission gear and video gear could have learned the frequencies to hijack and there ya go. Truly the biggest obstacle he would have faced was probably affording the cameras and transmitters, and the VHS gear which back then still cost quite a bit of money.
So, if you ask me who's the most likely culprit - it probably was a group of very intelligent 20-somethings with a penchant for technology who just did it for a laugh. I highly doubt an employee did this because A) there was no real sense of "I got a bone to pick with you" from anything that the Max Headroom-cosplayer said or showed, and B) they would have to know they'd be the first suspects in this case and would hardly get away with it.
The only reason these people got away with it is likely BECAUSE they weren't insiders and had no connection to each television station. Captain Midnight and the Playboy Channel hijackers were both employees, they both had grudges/bones to pick with who they were hijacking, and they both got caught. Very different vibes all around from those hijackings compared to this one. Capt. Midnight was peeved about the subscription price; the Playboy hijacker hated the nudity. Max Headroom? Idk, seems to me like he just wanted airtime.
Ryan's hair has reached 1920's flapper potential and I think we'd all be missing out if he didn't attempt finger waves
You are correct, Shane. The 80's WERE weird! I was 10 the year this happened, and I can clearly remember my mother forbidding me from ever watching a rerun of Max Headroom again after totally misunderstanding the story. Brother had a Max Headroom mask from Halloween, and she "got that evil thing OUT of the house!"
Now that I think about it, my childhood was weirder than the 80's...

Ive known about this case for years and even though Shane would've been a literal baby, this feels like his confession.
My new theory is that this hijacking was our chaotic demon lord's first prank of this current incarnation. He keeps trying to top the dancing plague but alas, that might have been his peak moment of glory.
everything about this was a masterpiece. The topic? The jokes? The Professor interruption? 100/10 in my book.
i can’t believe this guy hacked the news AND became the rap god. true legend.
Nothing in the last decade has made me feel older than Ryan not realizing that Max Headroom was a character.
Tbh it just depends on who’s reporting it. I had heard this story a couple times before learning about the original show the mask was based on. It seems like it should be obvious of course, but that show might’ve been lost to time without this incident
My immediate thought is that someone working at the station just stumbled across the method of how to hijack the broadcast, and wanted to know if it was actually possible. They did a short hijack and after finding out it IS possible they try and see how long they can hijack for, hence the second broadcast. They never did any after that because, in my head, they were probably satisfied with the knowledge they could do it.
The reason for the content was probably to ensure that they knew it wasn't a technical glitch, and to ensure they can see whats being transmitted. For the longer hijacking, I believe the spanking was to do something they wouldn't want to show on TV but also not so sexually deviant to be scarring to any kids. I honestly don't think it was to bring attention to anything, I just think they wanted to know if they could do it and get away with it.
That’s honestly highly likely. A lot of hackers and computer geeks in general often mess with things for the sake of just seeing what they could do. Like you said the first test was just to see if their theory about being able to hijack the broadcast was correct. The next step a lot of these people would do is to see how far they could go. That’s why this time they managed to get audio going and remained on air for over a minute.
They clearly had no desired message and was just there for some fun which again aligns with a lot of people in those groups. While some might have kept doing it, this person was also probably aware they would get caught, especially being an inside job. I do wonder though about who exactly among the staff could have done it. I almost wanna say someone lower down on the ladder as they had more room to mess around, we’re either gaining confidence in their abilities or had been for some time and leader positions likely feared losing their job
I think this is the most likely explanation to be honest. It would also explain why no one got caught as well as if it was just someone messing around and just testing themseveles then I'm sure their bosses would have sympathy for them.
What does Nestor Makhno know about hacking the system? (;
This seems very likely. I don't think there's any real message someone just wanted to see if they could get away with it. Maybe the spanking was to see how quickly someone else would (or could) put a stop to the hijacking with the stakes being the channel in a lot of trouble.
Ryan and this show are both gay
There's like nothing scary or aggressive really about this hijacking but that mask always unnerved me

Max always kind of creeped me out - I was too young to really get the humor. I had not heard of this mystery before, and seeing those clips have only intensified the creepiness! My favorite WTF moment during a broadcast was a clip that The Soup (when Joel McHale was hosting) found: it was a talk show and all of a sudden there was a still of spaghetti cat that lasted like 10 seconds before switching back to the show hosts. There was no mention of the cat and it was like it didn’t happen. For those wondering, spaghetti cat was a black cat sitting in a high chair with a plate of spaghetti in front of it. it's pretty suspicious to me that the hacking happened soon after the show with the character got cancelled - I think it's possible that it was someone associated with the show who was upset it got cancelled or did it as a bid to get them more ratings in the hope that it would be reinstated.
For the theories: could the hacker have been someone who was angry about Max Headroom no longer airing? Perhaps they hoped the publicity stunt would get people talking (especially if they added something "scandalous" i.e the butt slapping) and perhaps get it popular enough again that they'd make more..?
It would be weird, because attacking just (then-unaffiliated) WGN and (PBS) WTTW wouldn’t have done a thing
I wonder if they had the Superstation yet
I was thinking that too especially after they mentioned it was canceled so soon before

I remember hearing about this incident as a child, and being absolutely terrified lmao as an adult I can def laugh and find the hilarious joy in the idea of this harmless crime, I can't help but react the same way Ryan did to the actual video footage, shit is uncomfy for some reason. Even just the silly little Professor as Ryan joke hijack in this episode had me a lil uncomfy LMAOO such a fun mystery tho! I actually have a video on my phone from back in high school when I caught what I believe to be some kind of creepy jacking of my local news, randomly in the middle of a news report at night, there were photos of animal Skeletons, multiple. They were like diagrams? So not just candid photos of real bones, but I remember specifically a very unnerving bat skeleton diagram. And the casters went silent during the photos, about like 2 seconds or so, then it cut back to them and they just went back to talking, not acknowledging them or anything. I don't know what that was about but it still scares me to this day, shit like that is just creepy as hell, so I was excited for this episode bc I do genuinely love how spooky TV jacking is LMAO!
Edit: I found the videos they're from 2018 and the headline had been "city selling electricity to San Diegans" and its still such a creepy video. It even has a strange transition from the broadcast to the photos with like a textured wavy pattern-definitely one of the creepiest things I've ever experienced lmao

I love this idea with my whole heart and sincerely hope they do it
Really happy to see the boys handling Weird MysteriesTM again. I also just wanna say how grateful I am that you guys post content warnings, even for mild stuff. It proves that doing so doesn't have to be a big deal or distract from the media - if people want to check it out they know it's there, and they don't get any nasty surprises. And if they don't wanna see it bc of spoilers they don't have to. Everybody wins.
I'm still watching this even after the paywall incident. am i alone or is it simply a mystery?
As a Doctor Who fan, I would be so mad that someone interrupted an episode like that 😂
At the same time if I was watching that I wouldn't even know if it was just part of the show because that is the kind of thing you expect from doctor who
Same way the "interrupt" some of the ads on BBC.
Yeah, and that's a kick-ass episode, too. Very creepy.
Same here!
Particularly in 1987, when that might have been your only chance to videotape it off of the TV! Who knows when it might come up in rotation again.
I think I first learned abt this case thru being a doctor who fan
Mysterious hijackings of mass media are some of my favorite weird things. This, the hijack aspect of the Toynbee Tiles mystery, the weird radio broadcasts in the Pacific Northwest (96.7), and the Southern Television Interruption are all excellent mysteries.
I love how the Toynbee Tiles were made and placed.
do you have any recommendations for stuff i could watch/read about these things listed?
there’s a documentary about toynbee tiles called Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles
A new Toynbee tile just appeared in Baltimore!
@@mortarpestle6225 No way! That’s so cool.
Shane is dressed like he’s ready for an episode of Taskmaster
Oh my god.. he would be resplendent on Taskmaster
@@Catandgoose He really would be!
Anyone else think it’s funny how Shane and the professor tell stories in a very similar way??
I'd imagine there were at least 3 people involved. During the whole fly swatter thing, there are obviously 2 people. Also, the camera seems to shift a bit as though to capture it better. This could point to there also being a person behind the camera. Also, Chamelion says "We'll strike again", not "I'll strike again." This could imply either that he wasn't the perpetrator and is referring to them collectively, or that he is part of a group of people that includes the perpetrator
Side Note: Eminem's music video for Rap God is based around Max Headroom
Thank you for your comment because i knew it reminded me of something but could not tell what... The Eminem video of course 👌
The flyswatter scene looked like the swatter was being swung by a puppet, so it could have been a one man job if he had some practical engineering skills in addition to the electronic ones needed to hijack the station.
I gotta know, for the season, what were everyone’s favorite costumes? Shane definitely committed more to them but Ryan seemed to love the bits😂
Leatherman
Leatherman is so iconic
leatherman will always hold a place in my heart
Ham Operator here to weigh in, looking at the technical side it honestly could have been an outside job-if they were close enough.
While the way TV broadcast worked in the 80s is basically obsolete now, like Chameleon said, it isn't that hard to override even a large antennas signal with some basic equipment within a close proximity. All you would need is a directional antenna (which is about 3-4 feet long and very simple to build ) and a means of broadcasting the video.
So it could be done, provided that someone could have snuck up close enough, likely to the top one of the high rises where the signals were traced, with the antenna without getting caught. And they would have to stay put for the entire length of the broadcast, which could also explain why it wasn't attempted again, it would be too risky.
their own version 13:13 was much more creepier LMAOO
This level of weirdness is on my list of favourite human weirdness things!
Hey Shane and Ryan (also anyone else!) what’s on your favourite ‘weird things humans have done’ list??
Enumclaws famous death
Pirate radio, is on my list too, the attitude to - just do it anyway - makes life more interesting, especially the Irish Pirate radio stations like Sunshine Radio and Radio Nova!
That whole going down Niagara Falls in a barrel
How we personify things that aren’t alive/real/conscious. Like roombas
Probably Replies and Posting Obviously Idiotic Comments 😮😅
The second they started talking about Watcher getting hacked I was desperately hoping for a Professor/HoloProfessor cameo. And I got it!!!! God I'm so happy. You guys have the best sense of humor
This feels just like an SCP. Completely bizarre, done for no real purpose, and completely unexplained. What a neat mystery.
The character arc of the boys this season was phenomenal. Going from friends to colleagues then adjacent humans and back to colleagues. Can only hope that the debrief completes this
Ryan reacting to the second Max Headroom video like a baby sensory video is KILLING ME! Keep up the good work boys love yah
To Shane and Ryan, have you played "the test" yet? It's a horror personality test on steam where each ending is custom tailored to the player.
Such a good series
is this in any way related to the watson scott test
@@d25102 its basically a copy, but not as good
@@d25102 No it's actually nothing like the watson scott test. You answer questions yes, but it's not designed to scare you, it's designed to read you.
OMG YES ZOBOOMAFOO!!! I WAS OBSESSED WITH THAT SHOW AS A KID!!!
i always heard about this story as a kid growing up in chicago. it still creeps me out like nothing else. to this day, if my tv glitches at all, my immediate first reaction is that someone hacked the feed.
gotta love that despite shane longer being *ryan’s* friend, ryan is still introduced as “shane’s friend”
wait what
Wait, what did I miss
huh??????
??
@@bellea8429it’s lore from the Mystery Files Debriefs, things are normal between them IRL
As someone who travels from Bloomington Indiana to the Chicago suburbs, Shane saying it’s only “an hour or 2 away” made me scream. Bloomington IN is like 5 hours away from Schaumburg. Besides that, the show is well researched.
Shane just revealed he speeds
Him saying that made me giggle, I was like "no way he has ever been to Bloomington, if he thinks it takes any less than at least 4 hours" LOL
Is it the distance or is it traffic?
Back in the day out here is SoCal I could get to LA in an hour, nows its twice that and its only about ~40 miles
also tbh people say oh yeah Orlando is 2 hours from Miami all the time (its because they speed). It's also like 4-5
honestly i feel like he mixed it up with Bloomington Illinois somehow
why do i literally find this the scariest mystery files episode idk what it is but that MASK THE ANGLES THE VOICE THE LOW QUALITY I CANT AAAA
For some reason when I heard about this when I was younger and watched it, it really terrified me. I was really creeped out and it made me really scared that I don’t own cable television so thank god for streaming services
genuinely one of my all time favorite mysteries, its just that weird odd flavor of no real harm done but also genuine absurdity and the fact that they got away with it. a lot of media would end up inspired by this incident, you can honestly say that this is a true american legend.
The idea they would incriminate their boy Steven IS hilarious! He’s a crazy bartender whose too deranged for his own good! Helluva mixologist I’ll admit!
Fuck me I misread mixologist as MISOGYNIST. I was like "that's not nice :-("
Steven is MANY things (according to him anyway 😂) but no where close to a misogynist. Only thing I’ve seen him abuse were Ryan and Shane’s livers 😂😂… and maybe his seniority when it comes to Ricky 😅
To shane and ryan.
If you could choose 1 mystery out of every one in the world, crime, supernatural, or just life questions like, ANY MYSTERY. What one would you choose to have publicly solved?
exceptionally gay as bad show
@@QuietBeastlil man gettin tense
I'm so excited to be hearing about the Max Headroom incident! I'm old enough that I remember when it happened!! I remember his tv show, all the ads he did, everything. I always wondered what really happened with the jacking of the news... thanks for covering this, guys! Really. Appreciate it muchly. ❤
But for real, shout out to the whole team of brilliant people making these videos. This is quality stuff, absolutely love it!
I mean, the inside jokes are offputting and makes me feel like I'm kinda interloping on people who don't really know I'm there, but that's like the only gripe I have -- this is absolute quality!
Ryan and Shane helped keep me sane during the pandemic. I'm so happy to see them succeeding
yeah without them we’d be inshane. and cryan alone
gaaa*goat noise*aay show
For debrief: Ryan, when you wrote the list of topics for Shane to potentially chose from, did you just write CHICAGO next to this one so he would know it was for him?
Mystery files has to be one of, if not my favorite program on this channel.
It gives off the vibes I miss from BF: True crime, since we had plenty of the other spookiness with Are you Scared? and Ghost files, but arguably much better that True Crime, since it really feels like you're able to do whatever the hell you want, and I love it.
It's also feels a lot more welcoming and exciting, something I didn't know I needed from people talking about mysteries.
From now on, I think baby Shane should always be one of the choices on the cork board. Sounds more reasonable than aliens 😅
