Queenstown might be our favourite place in New Zealand, but today we're leaving it behind to take a Nature Cruise, jump in a kayak and chase some waterfalls in the Milford Sound! We're on a Milford Sound day trip from Queenstown with Southern Discoveries, it's almost 15 hours in total by the time you take the coach out there, take the nature cruise, kayak around and then back onto the return coach - but it's totally worth it!
This day trip has to be one of our most memorable in all of our travels. The Milford Sounds are known for their beauty and are a particular highlight of New Zealand for a lot of travellers, yet somehow we'd never actually visited before. You can drive your self from Queenstown to Milford Sound but that would require a lot of gas, a lot less focussing on the beautiful sights and a lot more organising by booking the cruise and kayak portions. We decided taking a day trip was the easier route and we're so happy we did.

Sadly since we filmed this video some of the roads to Milford Sound have been damaged in a flood, the repairs are ongoing so hopefully it will be open for tourism again soon.

My favorite moment cruising Milford Sound was the pod of dolphins that were jumping in the wake of the boat. There was the cutest baby keeping up with the rest. Oh, and the fabulous waterfalls!

@@DanegerAndStacey my husband is Welsh and he does the same thing! I think anyone with a 'strong' accent subconsciously tones it down when they're abroad. Speaks slowwwly and cleeeearly 😂

Definitely the sunshine couple then! You guys have visited some amazing places and been on so many incredible tours, but this one (for me) has to be the best of them all. If I ever manage to visit NZ, this tour would be top of my bucket list! Beautifully filmed as always.
We might have jinxed it since going on this trip, rain has followed us everywhere haha! Can definitely recommend this tour if you ever make it to our neck of the woods

What a great visit to Milford Sound. Nicely done guys, Can't believe you made it a day trip ! Back in the day we made it a leisurely overnight trip and managed to pan for gold along the way. Even got a couple of tiny nuggets ! It was late May and we woke up to snow on the ground. Our videos were limited to 480p which was the best available in 1999. Yours are fab with the high resolution digital of today 😉
It was definitely a big trip to tackle in a day, but so glad we did, easy and stress free when someone else does all the thinking for you. How cool you got gold and snow! Shame that the 480p footage wouldnt have done it justice though 🤣

New Zealand is stunning. We cruised the Fiordland National Park about a year ago: Milford Sound, Thompson/Doubtful Sound and finally Breaksea Island/Dusky Sound. The scenery was breathtaking!
Was that on a full cruise ship or individual smaller boats?
Full cruise ship (majestic princess out of Sydney). You were so close to the waterfalls!! I can tell you, we were very jealous of the boats that got that close 😃😃

That looks like such an awesome day out from Queenstown…you made the bus trip look bearable. I’m hoping our borders stay open to be there in Spring from Oz…so exciting to do bucket list stuff. If there’s anything to learn from Covid lockdowns…make the most of travel and trips when you can. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Was this before covid? you enjoyed a buffet lunch and I can’t find a tour that does this… just packed sandwiches.
It's definitely a long day but so worth it! If we went back again we'd love to fly one way. Yes, this trip was pre-covid, not 100% sure if they still offer kayaking as an option anymore.

If that river was is ACTUALLY glacier water, I'd be bottling that stuff up. I collected some Glacier water at the Columbia Icefields in Banff National Park in Canada, and after you let it warm up to room temps, the water is absolutely the SWEETEST water you'll ever taste.

Yes, absolutely! Although it seems like the tours have all shuffled around a lot since then (check the other comments here). We personally loved this day and you cant go wrong with them as a tour operator

If you take a tour you've got nothing to worry about at all!

Is there a better side of the bus to sit on?
We specifically made sure to sit on the left side (facing forward) because thats closer to the scenery and not looking over cars... but with the open glass roof you get a great view from everywhere
I must say that both times I've been to Milford,it's been sunny LOL dunno if its just good luck or what.
