TOP Must Do Activity in NZ - MILFORD SOUND | South Island, New Zealand Vlog 2/5

- Milford Sound is situated on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Breathtaking views of plunging cliffs, towering mountain peaks with dramatic low hanging clouds and magnificent raging waterfalls, it's definitely one of those places you absolutely must visit in New Zealand.
There are a few different ways you can visit and enjoy Milford Sound. We chose to stay in a nearby town called Te Anau. We then drove out the next day to catch a cruise tour of the famous fiord.
For lunch in Te Anau we had a quick bite to eat at a food truck called Bao Now. FYI they also have dumplings on their menu too.

After lunch, we rented some mountain bikes to do a scenic lakeside bike ride. Since we got to Te Anau pretty late from Queenstown, we could only squeeze in a relatively short ride along Te Anau Lake. There are much longer cycling routes you can do though.

We stayed two nights in a lovely, homely Airbnb cottage with very friendly and warm hosts, Kevin & Keiko. They have a beautiful tranquil garden and their place is a super short drive away from Te Anau's town centre.

For our Milford Sound cruise, we decided to go with a small cruise called Mitre Peak Cruises. The boat is smaller than the other cruise ships which means it has less height, but it has the great advantage of getting much closer to some great sights (like right under a waterfall and very close to the rocks where we saw penguins and seals). They also had informative commentary from the skipper and hosts on board making it feel like a more special and personal experience.
We managed to score a sweet deal for our Milford Sound cruise on a booking site that we often use called Bookme:

A few tips when visiting Milford Sound:
1) Fuel up in Te Anau as there aren't any petrol stations along the way to Milford Sound. No mobile phone coverage either.
2) Allow yourself enough time for scenic stop offs on Milford Road and for check-in (otherwise visit the scenic spots on your return drive).
3) Wear insect repellant on any exposed skin as we got bitten a fair bit in the carpark. It was totally fine on the actual cruise itself but when we got out of the car those sand flies and mozzies went to town on our ankles!
4) Wear something warm and rain proof especially if you're wanting to enjoy the waterfall spray which we fully recommend as it's invigorating and fun!
Btw we didn't vlog our dinners in Te Anau, but there's a great Indian restaurant in the town centre (Radha's) and a pretty good Chinese restaurant too (Ming Garden) if you're in need of some Asian food like we were!

Another enjoyable video P&Y - some of your camera mountain shots were amazing, especially on your drive to Milford Sound. Guy's the last time i went on a Milford Sound boat cruise was over 30yrs ago, so that was a nice nostalgic moment....( I think i might know those seal's parents..lol ). 'Yen' - the sacrifice a professional makes to get the perfect shot...your a legend.

Though she can get quite dinged up yen's a real trooper always keeps going 😂 👍 I really love birds especially parrots, seeing the kea is actually the highlight of out trip. Only seen them 3 times before in the wild they are reasonably rare and sooo cute 😍

I was all good.. walked away with just some scrapes and bruises but all part of the fun I guess lol 😅 Peter was really reluctant to give me the gopro initially but I was like just give it.. done this so many times before so he did and then next minute 🤣 what I failed to account for was I haven't done it on such a gravel stoney road before sooo yep 😅😅

So good! Must be pretty tough for most in the tourism industry at the moment so that's why so many specials to try get some people rather than none at all. Hopefully things pick up again soon so there's a fair balance for businesses and consumers 🤞

I’m so relieved that you’re okay from the fall off the bike! Yikes! Gorgeous sceneries! Wow! Connie and I were super excited to hear my name mentioned in the vlog! Thank you for that! We would have loved to have seen the wildlife at Milford Sound. Our cruise ship was just too big to get close enough to shore to see the penguins and seals. That would have been wonderful! We cannot wait for the vaccine to come out so we can all travel freely again!

She's toughed it out 😁💪 no worries about the shout out 🤙 glad you enjoy the wild life cause that's generally my favorite part too. Seeing the kea and playing with it was the favorite part of my trip they are getting pretty rare these days. Hope enough ppl used that vaccine so that humanity can finally beat this thing.

Love the country look of your Airbnb. We also take off our shoes at home and pretty much everywhere we go. Oohh, the snowy mountains are magical. That's cool you can get a cruise to enjoy the best of the mountains. It seems a bit chilly though.
Yea I don't get how ppl leave shoes on indoors! I physically feel so wrong when asked to leave shoes on going into homes 😅 it was very cold on that cruise!! I was in a snow jacket and freezing sitting on the top deck 😂 but it really was the best views though 😍

Hahaha New Zealand has so many motor homes. It is very common for baby boomers as well as visitors from Australia and Europe to explore huge areas of New Zealand via motor home. Maybe an idea for you guys in the future 😉

The price per night at your AirBnB was really affordable. What a beautiful room, and cute setup. The drive was gorgeous to Milford Sound. OMG... $6.50/hour of parking. That's crazy! Nice you got a deal on your tickets through bookme. We love mountain vistas like this. HAHAHA.. Yen getting a shower from the waterfall!! Love the mist!! Peter is all about that Waterfall mist life HAHAHA!! Thanks for taking us with you and fun adventure! Love you guys to the moon and safe travels!! BTW... Those birds that destroy the car.. they are cute, even if they bite LOLOL!!
The waterfall was so much fun lol 🤣 definitely recommend getting sprayed by it 😂 and the kea are super awesome birds. They're endemic to NZ and the only true alpine parrots in the world.. plus they're incredibly intelligent 🙂🐦 if you spot one in the wild here in NZ you're lucky and probably in a pretty remote place! That's if it's not trying to destroy your car of course hahaha
Yen loves her buttermilk chicken, been seeing her having few dishes that have buttermilk chicken :D Awwww that doggo is so cute!! Fetch!! Omg.... I felt like I fell too when Yen fell! The garden is so beautiful, I can retire in such a place, and the airbnb is so cute!

Haha sometimes I'm quite good as long as I prepare myself fully beforehand which means solid sleep beforehand, and eating some hot food at least an hour earlier.. but if both conditions aren't met it's a recipe for disaster 😅😅 haha you know when I use to work I'd often eat lunch around 3ish too.. very late 😅 now that we don't work, it's not uncommon for me to skip lunch completely so just 1 meal a day and that's dinner. Body feels great for it! There's a fair bit of science behind fasting. Yen here btw 😁 also, I'm not a nutritionist so don't follow my habits lolol 🤣

The views on the South Island are just so epic - somewhat similar to the European Alps, only much purer (less pollution, lower population density).

Honestly those birds are awesome lol 🤣 they're really intelligent too and just so notorious for causing havoc on cars 🐦 glad it wasn't our rental though 😆 if you ever get to see one out in the wild it's pretty lucky and probably means you're in quite a remote place! @@PeterandYen, we ended up staying at Lumsden Hotel, not a good experience. However, the whole Queenstown Milford Sound experience was so memorable, especially driving to Milford Sound, the Homer Tunnel area, with hundreds of waterfalls from mountains...We ended up visiting Milford Sound 3 times during December last year..one time on Cruiseship from Sydney to Auckland, one time driving from Queenstown to Milford Sound then took the 2-hour cruise, and another time fly in from Queenstown using the True South small plane. All your videos of NZ brings back lots of memories of my NZ roadtrip. We love NZ a lot, too bad this year is Covid, otherwise will come back NZ to avoid the winter in Canada. My most favorite attractions of NZ are: Castle Hill, Star Viewing Dark Sky project at Lake Tekapo, Lupine fields near Lake Tekapo, Wharaiki Beach, Allans Beach, Tunnel Beach Dunedin, Muriwai Gannet Colony Auckland, Milford Sound, and the list goes on....🙂🙂🙂🙂

Aw yea def gotta do the cruise one day. Just so dramatic and epic 🤩 nah droning in NZ is such a pain and even worse in the South Island so we didn't even take it on this trip! Hahaha thank you 😁 We use to make "best eats" videos where we would hit up 3-4 restaurants often in a single day 😅 but it's a lot of eating and we don't actually like eating excessively lol so we haven't made those type of videos lately and instead just include some food stops in our vlogs 😅 glad you enjoy those bits though 😁👍👍

Oh no! Be careful Yen when holding the gopro while biking. You guys maybe can use a head attachment for your gopro so it’s safer, just need to focus on your ride. Last thing we want to hear if you get an injury just because of getting a nice footage. Thankfully you are ok Yen! 👌🏻
