Had a 2016 Cherokee Trailhawk. After replacing the shifter assembly for the third time, it's been traded for a Disco Sport. It's a bit of a shame because I liked everything about that vehicle, but the shifter assembly has had issues since the introduction in 2014, and people are still having the same problems with 18's and 19's.
Great video! However, you forgot to mention that the fully loaded Cherokee Trailhawk is $10,000 less than the base Land Rover Discover Sport HSE (at least in the states, cannot speak to England price points).
With Low Range and the rear locker I thought the Jeep would have easily outperformed the Landie but apparently not. You can buy a lift kit for the Jeep to improve the ground clearance a little bit but unless the car is bottoming out I'm not sure how much difference it would have made in this situation. I do like the idea of a small(ish) SUV with proper off road ability though.
I am really surprised that an aussie does not know how to drive off road.Flooring it like a child will get any vehicle stuck. You are meant to put it in terrain response and the car will take you there simple !! Please note that the discovery will be matched with a new range of more efficient diesel engines and new automatic box this year which will take it miles ahead of the jeep on economy, emissions, power delivery, purchase price, and eco futurer proofing. Please note that turbos are essential for serious off road vehicles. Taking old v6 technology over 10000 feet will spell curtains for the jeeps power. So if you want a old technology Fait with a nice skirt buy the jeep....otherwise its an obvious choice.. The last point is that the new Defender has been announced this week which will be the ultimate off road machine the world has ever seen no more 40 year old agricultural wagons from mercades !
I thought they were ending production of the defender because it didn't meet safety standards? So they are updating the safety and rereleasing it? I hope the keep the external looks the same.
+peter jones sorry but in my off roading vehicle i want as little technology as possible, because when i am 500 miles from the nearest shop i don't want any fancy electronics braking down and me not being able to do anything. I am more of a jeep guy but i really dislike this cherokee. i might be a ble to fix a mechanical problem in a field but sure as hell i won't be able to fix a computer issue. for me the best choice for an off roader is definitely a wrangler rubicon, instead of the defender, though for overlanding the defender is probably a better choice. Personally i drive the older cherokee kk which i love, and the only thing that i'd change is that i'd like to select 4wd manually and not with an electronic switch. from the 2 shown in the vid i'd go for the disco because both suck at off roading but at least the disco is much more beautiful and superior on road
The defender has evolved as a miltary vehicle for just those design contraints. However it would be interesting to speculate if landrover would ever make an expedition model once again for this miltary purpose. My guess is that the 2016/2017 will give you two models to look at the new defender and discovery more focused on overlanding.
Not sure what tyres the Jeep had but they were much meatier for sure. The Discovery Sport comes with standard 100% road tyres by default when you buy one especially as that one has 20" alloys. A good friend of mine owns a Discovery Sport, and he got me into off roading actually but I digress.... He also has an additional set of custom wheels for his DSport purposefully for off roading they are fitted with Cooper M/T off road tyres, I think... I've been with him green laning in it, and it is able to do everything the other Land Rover's do in high range gears. The main thing is always tyres. If you're going off road, at the very least you want a good set of 50/50 A/T rubber on.
+Mike Pineapp Cherokee comes with Yokohama HT tyres so the tred isn't great for those conditions. However the Trailhawk has 17" wheels so the tyres are higher profile than the Landy, which gives you a bit more scope
Yes it has 9 gears, but Discovery Sports don't have a low range transfer case. Like the LR4 as its called over there. Or the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.
the only reason they got stuck is because they don't know how to drive in the mud. my range rover has NEVER been stuck in the mud and I've took it through some rough shit.
people can afford to buy the land rovers, but the repairs and parts make them not worth keeping in the long run. thats why we dont see very many older ones. they are in the junkyard
Very bad, do some practice and research before reviewing cars. Land Rover's ESC should NOT be turned off before terrain difficulties, the terrain response system adjusts the ESC parameters for each type of terrain. When you turn it off, you are preventing the car to automatically brake individual wheels, so as soon as one spins freely, the car loses its traction.
These car Both Land Rover Discovery Sport and Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. They can go off-road In a lot of Ways to do in Rock, Dirt, Mud and Sand throughout the World.
I know from experience that they both very good cars, however the Jeep is better off road. You can get a lift for the Jeep and larger tyres that you can't get for the Disco Sport.
Put giant 40" street tires on a lifted Jeep Wrangler and it won't go any further than either of these two vehicles did. If you they both had proper off road tires on them, this would actually show their off road capabilities accurately.
i dont know about the engine in the rover. But the jeep's engine is all chrysler. it's a 3.2l pentastar V6. And both use the german ZF 9 speed auto. Im not a fan of it in my jeep, it lags too much. and there are plenty of issues with it. but it's all programming, not the trans's fault
I think both are just about as equal, seems to me that the jeep is maybe a little more capable! Maybe not but then again I couldn't tell! The problem wit Land Rover is that they went away from the ruggedness that they were known for in favor of more luxury and car like suv's. They drop the defender wish was a very rugged and capable vehicle. Jeep in the other hand still has the wrangler and still remain true to the original willys. Anyway! I like both vehicles.
The whole comparison is based on a wrong assumption: the two cars are not comparable! Discovery sport is not in the same category of trailhawk cherokee. You cannot compare off-road performance of a car having diff lock and low gears with another who does not have it. You should have used the 'full size' Discovery. That is comparable and makes a serious test. Of course that is said assuming no one wants to make a favor to Jeep...
+Cemax Italy full size disco? you mean the defender? that would have to face the Jeep Grand Cherokee, or the 4 door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon if they want to compare the offroad capabilities. Then you take into consideration that you can have both the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee for the price of one defender, and it's clear to see the jeep is the clear winner in value alone.
+Jasonhon038 I like that too but it's a totally different car. Biased towards off-road while Cherokee Trailhawk is a nice attempt to balance on/off-road good capabilities.
+Hector Ayala With full size Disco I mean Disco 4, the sport version is a reduced size/prize/performance version of the Disco4. Disco 4 has low gear (like Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk), different traction control (much better than Disco Sport) and it is comparable with Cherokee Trailhawk if you want to make clear a point: you can buy; 4x4 vehicles that offer a good off-road performance even when purely stock while remaining comfortable on-road; IMO, comparing Cherokee Trailhawk with Discovery Sport is unfair and pointless. It would be like comparing a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with a Bmw X6, both nice cars but totally different in conception and target market (and price!)
I think we can all agree that the discovery, and the Cherokee aren't the off-road beasts they used to be. It really is a shame, but I guess that's survival. You have to sacrifice some qualities to stay alive in today's market.

The only British car make that's worth noticing is RR, and that's only because it's insane luxurious interior. But then again it is actually German. All other British cars are ridiculously expensive with little performance and no interior.

+Scott Can Do Does the Cherokee get to race it on road, as well? And compare interior features? Towing capacity? Max weight load capacity? MPG? Handling? Cabin quietness? I mean.. You're so one-tracked that you don't realize that the wrangler is better at Off road... Period. Some people want a nice hybrid, all purpose vehicle. Not to mention the price difference to get a wrangler with proper lockers, where the trailhawk has a rear locker.
+Justin Hardt they were doing an off road comparison and i thought that a wrangler or defender would be better off road it is my opinion you might disagree.
Good to see a Jeep shown in a positive light for once, I have a Cherokee and love it.
+R Greenup Agreed, same I have a Cherokee as well and I haven't once regretted making the purchase.
+R Greenup The new cherokee is a dump!

Great video! However, you forgot to mention that the fully loaded Cherokee Trailhawk is $10,000 less than the base Land Rover Discover Sport HSE (at least in the states, cannot speak to England price points).
Gythawen Land Rovers are nice cars, but they're way too expensive

every vehicle gets stuck sometimes..if you havent been stuck then you arent doing it right
Who can afford a Landrover anyways... Go Jeep!
people can afford to buy the land rovers, but the repairs and parts make them not worth keeping in the long run. thats why we dont see very many older ones. they are in the junkyard

Someone else might need to take another look at 2:18, but as far as I can tell, the Cherokees tire has been pulled from the rim...
Certainly looks like it at the 2:17 mark i.e. appears as you can see the inside of the alloy rim
Why didn't the Aus spec Jeep Trailhawk get the Firestone A/T tyres like on the US and other OS variants?
Nice review! Sometimes it would give nice to get a longer and more in depth vid. Especially when your comparing two cars.
Excellent video..but insights info on the interiors and safety features were missing.
All this review showed was these chaps don't know how to drive. The way they approached that mud would get any 4x4 bogged.
these manufactures are great at keeping the resale value of the Cherokee XJ high!
driver error
These car Both Land Rover Discovery Sport and Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. They can go off-road In a lot of Ways to do in Rock, Dirt, Mud and Sand throughout the World.
You missed a water crossing test, essential in an off-road test. The disco likely wins
Wanna go to the disco baby? Lol
I know from experience that they both very good cars, however the Jeep is better off road. You can get a lift for the Jeep and larger tyres that you can't get for the Disco Sport.
driver error that's all I can say not the tires the driver makes it
***** lmao I know jeeps rule that's why I own one do you
+noobtoob nooby Another thing is that on a muddy track, the first car has the advantage.
aabidam that's that's a very good point

the LR has 9 gears!!!!! you never mentioned that
+Konor Sacks the jeep cherokee literally uses the exact same transmission
+ToAstYNaChO ...it does...I know the engine is part ford...how is the transmission jeep??
i dont know about the engine in the rover. But the jeep's engine is all chrysler. it's a 3.2l pentastar V6. And both use the german ZF 9 speed auto. Im not a fan of it in my jeep, it lags too much. and there are plenty of issues with it. but it's all programming, not the trans's fault
+ToAstYNaChO it might be the transmission... the LR does the same...but the transmission does work better in manual
I think both are just about as equal, seems to me that the jeep is maybe a little more capable! Maybe not but then again I couldn't tell! Love video. BTW we all know how and where Land Rover got there start from and it was Jeep that helped them get started
That's a lame excuse why Jeeps are still horrible road cars.
was the jeep FWD?
abodd wardak no. its 4x4 with 4 low
A comparison of the "off road capability" of two grocery getters....amazing!
+rogue109 didnt know grocery getters have skid plates and diff lockers and tow hooks, dang bro.
What's up, yo? You're A Winner. important measly What's happening, guys.
I wonder if land rover will make a super car, luxury car, sports car or car
They make Jaguar cars.
that was not offroading.
Land Rover any day of the Week
The only British car make that's worth noticing is RR, and that's only because it's insane luxurious interior. But then again it is actually German. All other British cars are ridiculously expensive with little performance and no interior.
learn to drive off-road hehehe
your sturring wheel aint on the right side of that dang thang
the land rover is better
Mohammad Araji They both suck equally.
the jeep pulled the land rover out of mud
So you found a muddy road to use and that was an off road comparison was it ???... Hmmmmmm!
Let's think about this for a minute 🤔.... .... ....
yep that was indeed a crap review. 👎
If you have an off-road car doesn't mean that yóu can😉
You don’t use low range in mud🙄
Try with the Range Rover.
The RR could do that backwards
Jeep is just better
The Moderators are so nooblike. Very too much speed.
Jesus this was CRINGE
WONDERFVL! HOWDY?$ GRATE SCENE WHAT'S YOUR OPINION ABOUT THAT, GUZS !
Get a JEEP and save your 💲💲💲
I am not taking Jeep Cherokee seriously unless Crysler changes that shitty 9 speed auto transmission...
And a Defender or Wrangler will beat both easily
+Scott Can Do Does the Cherokee get to race it on road, as well? And compare interior features? Towing capacity? Max weight load capacity? MPG? Handling? Cabin quietness? I mean.. notice the name of the video is "off road comparison"
Notice the title is "land rover discovery sport vs jeep cherokee trailhawk" Where does it say wrangler or defender?
+Justin Hardt
they were doing an off road comparison and i thought that a wrangler or defender would be better off road
it is my opinion you might disagree.
+Justin Hardt a wrangler with no lockers and just the standard traction control will crush both of these off road
worst SUV review ever on the tube.... very very bad
jeep is good but its ugly.
+jack wilson Agreed. That's why we're keeping our 12 Libby. It doesn't even look like a Cherokee.
However the Jeep is so ugly I'd have to drive it with a paper bag covering most of it.
They should have been optioned with similar tyres.
NO ONE is gona buy these two cars for off roading, especially the land rover.
So jeep wins
Serious off road capability ...laugh
'crawl down on the brake' shaking my head... no idea
how come you guys don't have bad teeth? That's weird. I'm kidding.
...because they are Australian?
oh that's why, i thought they were british.
JEEP FTW! haha
Pooh review
idiotic review, cheap vs premium comparison and which is better? is that a question?
oh man that jeep is so ugly...
thank the gods it's not a real jeep
Definitely says Jeep, think its a Jeep.
They need to be like the old ones.
💪💪♥️♥️⭐️🌹⭐️♥️♥️💪💪
damn that jeep looks ugly
