Eminem's dad not only abandoned him, he sent back every letter Marshall wrote (unopened) and refused to speak to him when he called his mom and Marshall was there. Then Em blew up, was on TV and in the papers, and suddenly his dad cared and was begging to meet him. He even published an open letter in a newspaper, which is what Em is referring to. That just pissed Em off even more. Leaving was bad enough, coming back cuz he was famous and rich was probably worse to Marshall.

Exactly. I don't know if he's done a reaction to it yet, but "Bad Husband" would be a great song for him to react to.
Eminem has matured over the years and regrets a ton of things he's said/done to people he loves throughout his career. In that song you can hear him choking up, that deep down he loves her and realizes he was a terrible husband but still a great father, which makes no sense to him because his daughters love both him and Kim equally and never needed to choose sides.
It's also what makes this song so powerful. He forgives and apologizes to almost everyone in his past, but his dad? No. He will always hate him to the point where he'd deny going to heaven just to torment the guy. There is no forgiveness or sympathy to his father.

about to hear the song for the first time. I just read your comment. and I'm thinking , at the very least, what his dad did almost assuredly GUARANTEED that Marshall was gonna be a fucking amazing father to his offspring. silver linings, you know..

@@Cripplified Bad Husband is one of my absolute favorites from Em.
It makes me emotional every single time I hear it. It makes me think of my Sons Father and our relationship. Most things flipped, since the song is written from a male perspective but, it still hits.

This song is a testament to one of Eminem's greatest abilities, musically. He finishes every verse leading and building into the chorus rather than making the hook a separate entity. It's why so many of these songs feel epic and transcendental. That segue is so underrated.

  • @Kno_Buddy

His father left before he was even a year old. He sent letters to his father as a kid and they always came back unopened labeled “return to sender”. If I recall correctly his mother and father were in a local band together in the late 60s and early 70s before EMINEM was born and that’s how they met. His father supposedly tried to reach out to him after he became famous claiming that he was looking at his baby pictures and smiling proud of him and EMINEM heard the story and has brought it up a couple of times, but he really doesn’t talk about his dad that often simply because it’s still that open wound and now since he died one that will never be resolved. Now that he is dead EMINEM made this song and his father’s new family was trying to sue him over the song because they felt he was being disrespectful to his memory, but the case was thrown out. This was just him saying “Okay, I’ve said my piece and I’m just done with it. No sense in carrying this around any longer.” He has a new song with Ceelo Green coming out this month on the soundtrack of the new Elvis biopic. The song is called The King And I which I would imagine without having heard it yet obviously being about Elvis it’s also probably linked to the old story of the same name. EMINEM has made a lot of parallels between himself and Elvis throughout his career and while some of the comparisons I can see I have to disagree that they are alike. Elvis became famous for the money and ripped off black culture with a good few of his songs being covers and his dance moves being stolen from black artists like Chuck Berry. EMINEM became famous to support his family and do what he loved. He has a great love and respect for the culture constantly hyping up new and old artists saying “Hey, if you like me then check these guys out”. He even wears Hip-Hop shirts to his shows in hopes that people will see it on stage and go home and look them up possibly bringing them more fans.

When my Dad passed away last year, i played this song on repeat. The speech he makes at the end helped me deal with my emotions because i felt every word and related to it. My Dad was there in my life but he was a horrible father and husband, would leave for weeks staying with another woman and was obviously physically abusive. So I really relate to this song.

Eminem loves a challenge! So I'm not surprised he feels that way... They had joint custody of the kids & worked together to raise the kids! After they divorced they got along a lot better as friends...they had known each other since they were like 14 yrs old! I think its great when both parents can set aside their differences & work together for the kids! Eminem through out the years has used his music as his own type of therapy! Other artists that have worked with him have said they were glad he had music as an outlet! they didn't know what Eminem would do without it!

I saw many people when this song came out saying that he's being a bit too much with what he's rapping because his father is dead and so on but I 1000% get him and no one can blame him for the anger and resentment he feels after everything he's been through. I think people should try to be in his shoes for a change and understand where all these angry lyrics are coming from. Being abandoned at such a young age leaves you with a scar. I personally experienced it myself with my father who abandoned us and started a new family. Even the years he was there, I would barely see him home and he would never bond with me or show affection so although my dad is not dead and I don't wish him bad health, it's like he's dead to me. I no longer recognize him as a parent since he was never a father figure to me. I get his anger and resentment, it's something I feel deeply when I wish I didn't but I feel so wronged and disregarded that I can't help it. Songs like these touch me deeply and make me cry because he explains so well how a lot of us feel and he's not afraid to say all he is thinking.

He is basically saying that his father is in Hell and he wants to stoop to his level! Just so he can tell him what he thinks & feels about him!!! This was written after his father died...he had tried to talk to Eminem after he found out he was famous! Em didn't want anything to do with him! Eminems best friend Proof aka Doody...was his driving force! Eminem stopped writing for months because he felt he was wasting his time...felt very defeated! Proof was the one that made him pick himself and start writing again! Em has said it was Proofs drive & positivity that helped keep him going! Unfortunately Proof was murdered in 2006 at a pool hall here in Detroit! That was when Em started abusing drugs ..bad...& OD'D...
