    The "judged by pigment" and "both sides of the track" bars went over your head. You were thinking too hard about what he meant but it was literal. He isn't talking about the rap game, he's talking about his literal childhood-- Eminem was raised in a black neighborhood and bullied for being white. And on the other side of the train tracks, where Kim, his ex wife, lived when they were younger, the white people made fun of him for being poor. Because of the environment he grew up in, he did not experience white privilege until after he was signed by Dre, which he has acknowledged on White America, when he said "Let's do the math, if I was black, I would've sold half-- I ain't have to graduate from Lincoln highschool to know that".

    “Judged by pigment’ - being a “white boy”
    To pretend that wasnt a giant hindrance for Em growing up where he did, when he did, how he did is ahistorical. It also nearly kept him from ever blowing and becoming famous. If not for Dre. He was the minority where he grew up. It isn’t about the degree of melanin, yes you are correct. It’s about the “culture”. It’s bc he’s labeled as being a “white boy”. So... not sure that’s any better. Maybe worse.

    • @jasonex4027
      @jasonex4027 2 роки тому +6

      Agreed. Also most of rappers were black and by them not being white it would be easier to get them space and respect from the culture. So sadly, the pigment plays a role on that archetype. And obviously not everyone is going to have the same story, like Wayne who says he's never been judged for being black. Yet Eminem has been for being "the white boy". Racism is a double edge sword. And let's not forget he grew up IN THE CULTURE, it's just they didn't want him. He was raised in Detroit... It was only anbout skin color, so... I don't know if I agree that much with Lboyd here, though I always enjoy his reactions. It is more complex than it seems, but the root is the same as always; discrimination.

  • @theworldofryan
    @theworldofryan 2 роки тому +41

    Growing up in/around Detroit, his line about getting from both sides of tracks is spot on. White people giving him shit for "acting black" and black people not accepting a white boy rapping.

      @@Reyvius78 yes it caused nerve damage. He’s lucky it wasn’t way worse. I actually know a lot medically. I’m a paramedic, almost finished a degree in sports medicine and have EXTENSIVE NEUROLOGICAL knowledge. Too many sways to list in that one. The brain and complete neurological system head to toe fascinates me. ANYWAYS YES AND I can’t remember specifically it also caused several other major issues. It damaged part of the brain where it controls (don’t quote me on this part.....BUT) where our reasoning is. Which added to already the brain damage his mom inflicted on him by feeding him pills as a baby and screwed up his “normal growth” physically and mentally. Just so much bad and all he has overcame and when he relapsed on pills people blamed it SOLELY on him just taking the easy way and many didn’t know he sustained a massive knee injury boxing and had to have all that reconstructed and THAT was how he took pain pills again cause it was so bad then he has no way to control that habit because he can’t reason like a normal person and Proof got killed smack in the middle of all this so just sent him completely down hill again, anyways I’ll have to look up what all it was on the head injury deal and beating etc and edit this post. BUT YES YOU ARE RIGHT on the eye part.

    So what Eminem means by "Getting it from both sides of the track" is literal. Where he grew up in Detroit, there's a train track that runs down 8-Mile road. That track separated the "Black" side of the city from the "White" side, and in other songs, such as Encore's "Yellow Brick Road", he reveals that people regularly would fight people of the other color for crossing that train track into the wrong territory in the city. So he's saying that he got that experience from POC's on the "Black" side of the train track, but also was bullied by his own race on his side as well.

    • @hoopwizardws
      @hoopwizardws 2 роки тому +1

      Damn so I got that bar wrong then. I had the gist of it but thought that "his side" of the tracks was getting bullied by his mom.

    The D'angelo line is in reference to D'Angelo Bailey, who legitimately beat Eminem so badly that he was in a coma. He bashed his head against the side of either a sink or urinal in a school bathroom. D'Angelo tried to sue him when the record came out, claiming slander - Eminem won the case because he had the medical records to show that it was true. It was a formative moment for Eminem. Very early in his life, at that moment, he realized that he had NO ONE to stand up for him - he'd have to stand up for himself.
    For the amount of shit that Em went through in his early life, it's amazing how good of a person he ended up being. He could've let that jade him for his entire life and just been a miserable person. Instead, he turned his pain into gold and gave us all wonderful music.

    his line about 'getting it from both sides of the track' goes much deeper than just being a white rapper in hip hop. it started much earlier when he was one of few white kids in predominantly black areas. being bullied by black kids for being white. and of course later on having to have the same thing happen in hip hop because he is white and 'not part of the culture' (as some gatekeepers want to claim)
    maybe you need to take a look of one of the many YT documentaries they have on Eminem to get a better understanding of his lyrics that mention things/traumas from his past/upbringing. doesn't have to be life, although that also would be something I would watch you do. I don't know. just an idea...

    Not sure if anyone has commented this already, but with the Macklemore line here, Em is referencing a line from the first verse in the Macklemore song "Same love" (which you should react to by the way). Em pretty much says that his childhood was much more rough than Macklemore's.

    Growing up without a father was only hard when father's day came around and I didn't have one as the other kids did. Same went for my mother's day with having no mom. This song is fire but headlines hit pretty hard since I agree that I would go to the ends of this earth to find my kids. Sometimes watching someone abandon you helps you make sure that you'll never do that to your own.

    Fat joe is light skinned for a Puerto Rican and heavy D is light for a Jamaican but it’s very clear they aren’t white. Em was 100% hindered because of his pigment which is actually white not just light for a specific ethnicity. That’s his point about he wouldn’t call it white privilege because his pigment prevented him in the early stages to get really any opportunities and when he won instead of being liked and people saying he is dope he got jumped and people to this day saying he isn’t in the top 5 or 10 just because he’s white
