00:00 Espadrilles & Alpargatas Introduction
If you’ve ever been to a beach resort or anywhere with a warm climate, chances are you’ve seen a pair of espadrilles or alpargatas for sale. Regardless of whether you’re dealing with soggy summers or not, Espadrilles and Alpargatas are unique casual shoes loved for their relaxed style and typically cheap price.
01:00 What are Espadrilles and Alpargatas?
Both names refer to the same style of shoe. Being able to use either term freely is quite unique when it comes to footwear because other types of shoe are more firmly defined.
With espadrilles and alpargatas being different from traditional leather dress shoes, you’re probably wondering: what’s the signature style?
→ Rope soled
→ Typically slip-on
→ Simple construction
→ Soft upper material
→ Can be made from many things including fleece and felt, but most common are:
• Canvas
• Lace/Pique Knit
• Leather
03:50 Do Espadrilles fit in Classic Menswear?
Historically speaking, yes. Humans have used rope-soled shoes for millennia. From a stylistic point of view, the answer is: Sometimes. Even with all that historical relevance, getting them right can be challenging.
08:28 Pros and Cons
Many benefits to espadrilles and alpargatas. Equally there are also drawbacks to wearing them.
PROs: → They have great breathability
→ Typically inexpensive
→ Lightweight
→ Vegan-friendly
CONs: → Even no-show socks will be conspicuous
→ Can be ridiculously expensive!
→ Not very supportive
→ Don’t wear/age well
12:45 When to Wear Espadrilles
→ Hot Climates
→ Casual Events
→ Downtime
14:15 When NOT to Wear Alpargatas
→ In the office
→ Cold climates
→ Physical activities
→ Fine/Fancy Restaurants
If you prefer a shoe with more structure and a higher degree of formality, then you’ll probably prefer something other than espadrilles and alpargatas. For many, espadrilles and alpargatas are a great shoe to add to your wardrobe: cheap, an easy-to-wear item, and rooted in classic menswear history. Wear them in the correct setting, and you can look great!

Would you be interested in doing a video on shoulder padding in suits, their history and why they've become less popular?
Pretty good suggestion
It’s gotten less popular because padding doesn’t look good if it’s done cheaply. Unlined jackets are much easier to fit properly off the rack for most men
I can tell you. It was to give guys broad shoulders. Now that they want you feminized they're taking it out.
@@barnastil591 Lol kinda true.
Shoulder padding is much like any other detail in a suit: subject to what's trending at the time. Could be an interesting discussion, we'll add the idea to the suggestion box!
Great idea for a video in the summer. We'll stick with espadrille as we have four pair. One blue oair of an eyelet fabric from Mod Shoes. One pair of summer desert shoes from Lambretta, a black basic lace up from Ben Sherman, and our favorite, a navy blue light cord pair of espadrille desert boots from Pretty Green. Cool in both ways.
Little sidenote. Espardenyes is the Catalan term first found in 1322 and working in the archives of Barcelona you can find Espardenya makers separating themselves as a proper guild already in the 15th Century (Espardenyers). Usually every major town from the Principality of Catalonia to the Kingdom of Valencia up to the Kingdom of Mallorca had a specialized craftsman making these shoes.
Oh sure, you post this after I buy my new espadrilles.
Great minds think alike!
My grandma always told me that she and my grandfather worked really hard from the down up and made our beautiful family… and that my grandfathers first pair of shoes were alpargatas.
I'm wearing a pair now. Much more comfortable than any other casual summer shoe.
Have had a few pairs bought in the south of France; navy and denim colored previously, and currently a mid-to-dark blue pair and off-white with navy stripes are in my collection. I use them as summer house shoes as well as instead of flip-flops, both on vacation in France and also in the Netherlands where I reside normally.
Recently bought myself a pair of espadrilles, i personally feel as if they are a more "gentlemanly" choice to flip flops and that they are a bit more elegant.
Saw the notification pop up. Yes. As a stalwart wearer of espadrilles I heartily endorse them. Would love to see more options on the market.
Wonderful summer shoes for relaxing. They are great especially living in NC in the summer where it gets in the 90's and very humid.
Thank you for the video, best timing I ever had! Just yesterday I bought a nice and light summer trousers and a shirt, and I thought about a pair of espadrilles. Thanks a lot once again!
Excellent! Glad to hear we're in sync! 😄
I was just told by my better half that my Reef sandals can’t go out in public anymore so this video is very timely. I’m not a big fan of wearing closed toed shoes without socks but I’m willing to give these a try at a lower price point
Living in the CA desert, I basically spend my entire day outside of work in espadrilles, because they hit the “casually elegant” note better than almost any other shoe. Currently I have them in ivory, and have to scrub them down with laundry detergent and a toothbrush from time to time to whiten them back up.
Loved Prof. Preston's segment.
I used always on summer time, I have in navy blue, olive and burgundy;I buy it in very good price last year on my vacation trip to Malaga.
Hello and thank you for a new issue about good taste and for advicing us as well.
These type of shoe was used in more parts of Spain since centuries ago, not only at Catalonia, I am typing to you now from the Canary Islands and they were also known with that name: " Alpargatas" I could say that the same could have happened in the 95% of this country as well.
In the other hand, it has been a surprise to me that our french neighbours had also shared this kind or type of shoe.
It is also strange, how time changes the value for some items, because in the past this type of shoe was rejected because it was considered it does belong to poor people, despite of all its virtues. It has also happened with many typical recipes from the traditional cuicine wich belong to that humble people ,who worked in the land (agriculture) and the sea (fishermen). Their gastronomy is nowadays synonim of sustainability, ecofriendly and overall healthy.
How strange the human societies can be.
Saludos!
In Argentina, "Alpargatas" are very popular if you are working in a farm and you are all day ridding horses, you could get them for less than 5 USD in a local store, when I see prices in designer stores I start laughing, the materials are so cheap, they will get destroyed after 6 - 8 months
I wore my men’s linen espadrilles with a matching sand colored Linen shirt & shorts at my bosses BBQ .Definitely raised eyebrows.Well received nonetheless.
If you're in the UK Mod Shoes currently have a range of espadrille type summer shoes in some really nice colorways.
I bought my first espadrilles in Marbella old town, Spain. But now I’m Venice and here I bought friulanes - you should next introduce it.
It’s actually quite hard to find espadrilles in US 14 so I haven’t had the pleasure yet. By the way, your style has evolved a lot since you started hosting videos. This look is outstanding!
Kenzo has them, last I checked.
Thank you! Here's hoping you find the right size someday 🙂
Living in Australia, we have the climate for it; I have my first espadrilles from Romika.
2 pair them in light grey and light olive green, and love them.
I've got cheap mens Espadrilles from Aldo with synthetic or rubber bottoms and synthetic/textile mesh uppers. Looks good with summer linens.
Sure always wear these at home mainly in the summer
I’m huge on this. Men should be wearing this stuff, flip flops are for the gym shower or maybe the beach. Otherwise put those feet away
I bought a pair from a family in Spain. They claim that they are handmade, whether or not that’s true I don’t mind.
Personally I really enjoy them, and I love wearing them around summer time
I only buy Diego’s espadrilles. I wear my espadrilles to my business casual office only until they get too worn out. You will know when it's time to stop wearing them to the office. I’m even considering buying a pair to keep at my desk so I can always wear comfortable shoes at work, even in the winter.
I'm okay with going sockless or no show socks and shoes but I will never wear sandals. I would rather be barefoot which I am as much as possible
Hi, great video. Who makes the espadrilles with the laces? I'd wear a pair of those easily. Thanks.
Thank you! They're from the brand Toni Pons
I love the idea of adding a very small heel into the espadrille. Unfortunately, that seems to be a rare occasion.
I need to buy one
Living in Alaska, there’s not a huge call for them. However I do have one pair, neutral perforated suede
I love men's espadrilles. I'm having a hard time finding the right size though, since I have low arches and relatively small feet. I have to size down a lot and usually have trouble keeping them on my feet. ://
I don't think I understand. Espadrilles are flat soled shoes, so your arches shouldn't be a problem, should they? If it's just the problem of your small sized feet just get women's sizes. These are unisex anyway!
@@teekue Tried women's sizes. Too narrow. The problem I have is the top part of the shoe is often too loose and doesn't hold my foot in place so then the heel slips no matter how tight it is. Will look into Preston's laced espadrilles.
Just a wild thought. How about adding tongue pads?
@@ashrafezani Just what I was going to say! Tongue pads should help, did for me.
Can't wait for more professor preston segments.
Being french, it is a bit confusing for me as an espadrille is a "running shoes" as you would call it. But thanks for the lesson. 😊
I have a question I bough an Stroh hat and have a black coat do you guys have a video about coats and Stroh hats let me know
Can you guys do yes a studio tour?
Those shoes in the intro were definitely too small for the wearing person. Nice video, thank you :D First video I see with Nathan, I really like his way of presenting.
Glad you liked the video! You can find out more about Nathan here: www.gentlemansgazette.com/get-to-know-nathan/?
Should these fit a little loose (to allow air flow & heat to leave your foot) or snug on the heel? Or personal preference?
Getting into this style cause yes I’m tired of wearing olu kai’s thong flips with my summer fits.
I am in Brisbane, Australia and I wear mine in the summer and they are much better than thongs (Australian for flip flops). I love that Nathan rocks high waisted pants, but unfortunately I can’t find any over here. Any tips?
As a person with hyperdrosia the rubber texture of flip fops and sandals make me sweat too much + i cant wear socks with them which is pretty ub¿ncommfortable for me thats why i prefer espadrillles or boat shoes
Can you PLS of a video what waistcoat is good for an smoking jacket from Victorian era (PLS make an video about it)
We have a guide that should help! www.gentlemansgazette.com/smoking-jacket-guide/?
Not sure I agree regarding socks. I partly ruined a pair of Toms by not wearing socks with them. My feet tend to sweat a bit and that damaged the inner.
I replaced them with another pair and I now wear no show socks with them. The ones I have don’t show at all and are much better than barefoot IMO.
I have the Toms in blue and another, cheaper pair in olive green. I can only wear them
in the summer with shorts though as I think they look off when paired with trousers.
Finding the perfect size for espadrilles can be incredibly difficult, especially when purchasing online.
I have one pair of light blue espadrilles I bought two summers ago. They still are in good shape, but they are starting to get a little loose. Which is something you should have mentioned. The canvas will stretch quite soon after you begin to wear them, so get them snug.
The other thing you should have mentioned is that they do not do well in wet environments. Yes, they are fine for around the pool or at the beach, but not in the actual water.
And lastly, I'm disappointed that you didn't mention Cary Grant wearing them in the opening scene from To Catch A Thief, where he slips away from the officers that come to arrest him.
im thinking of wearing them with linen trousers and a shirt
Also famously worn by Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant and John Wayne for that casual-yet-classy look. Now in France, one of the most famous fictional characters associated with espadrilles is Gaston Lagaffe, who wears them at the office because he doesn't care about dressing professionally.
Would you guys every cover huaraches? I think espadrilles fit that same level of formality, however I think Huaraches would be an interesting choice of footwear to cover
You got it spot on - same level of formality 😉
I have 4 pairs. I’m Australian. A navy and cream pair. Zebra print pair. Black pair and a tan suede pair. All outrageously expensive. Where to get cheap but good looking ones?
Love your work
In Argentina, "Alpargatas" are very popular if you are working in a farm and you are all day ridding horses, you could get them for less than 5 USD in a local store, when I see prices in designer stores I start laughing, the materials are so cheap, they will get destroyed after 6 - 8 months. Im currently living in Melbourne
Take as reference that in Spain you can find them for 12-15 Euros. If they are asking for 30$ in Australia, literally the opposite part of the planet, it could make sense.
A video on Bush shirts would be good ( the cousin of safari jacket/ Bush jacket ) made famous by Hemingway,Ruark, Capstick , Stewart Granger , and many others .
Love my espadrilles
Where did Preston get his from?
Professor Preston for the win
👨🔬
Please can someone tell me the name of the movie/show at 5:55 ?
was hoping you'd mention that some of them actually do not have a right or left
Yoooo the collars man 😢😢
Do they have any arch support in them? They look uncomfortable.
Not a good option for people like me with extremely narrow feet. Wearing them with insoles or extra pairs of socks to take up all the extra space defeats the whole purpose.
I'll stick with my Tevas, thanks. If I need a proper casual shoe, there are plenty of classic sneaker options.
I have a pair of TOMS & I just wear them as house slippers. Usually with just a pair of athletic shorts & a T-shirt. I personally wouldn't pay any more than $20 for a pair of these.
In my country, in Spain, it is very typical to wear alpargatas in summer, all older men, men, young people even children, use it, I also use it, I have some green espadrilles and the truth is that it is very good to wear them in summer.
Well, I've got a set of Madras pattern drills and they're brilliant. I think that they beat Crocs or flip flops any day, but the general feedback (mostly from some women) is that they're more obnoxious looking TOMS. OTOH this probably means that i need more discerning women in my circle. Who wants to see hairy toes?/Madras is fun!
Without watching the suggested video of alternatives, I that two pair of boat shoes that I wear. I think in my case, that is as casual as I will go. I don’t think I could wear these. I don’t care for slip-ons, and the lace ups look goofy.
Espargatas look hella fresh with cuffed seersucker pants.
Great pairing suggestion!
I wish I could wear them but I have thick ankles and just can't pull them off.
Lol I wear espadrilles to the office I don’t even care. Can’t live without mine
Neavy blue espadrilles 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Is there really difference between this type of shoe and a pair of Hey Dudes?
I’m all for “Wear what you like.” I don’t like the aesthetic of them and wouldn’t wear them myself. But I’d never judge a gent for choosing them for themselves.
You would indeed be judging before the act of never judging a gent as you put it. Also it's "wear within some common decency boundaries". If you let them pick their choices are generally speaking terrible
In town absolutely not. At the beach or at home for sure.
What summer shoe would you suggest for town?
@@gentlemansgazette loafers, derbies, oxfords or sneakers if you want to be slightly more casual.
I feel like professor proton is more famous than professor proton.
I believe we called those karate/kung fu 🥋 shoes 😂
I was noticing how similar they are. I've worn cheap Chinese kung fu shoes rather than sandals for years, without any idea that Europeans had anything comparable. I love the flat, minimalist soles and have no problem wearing them for extended physical activity.
I’d rather just wear boat shoes. The closes thing I would get to these would be slip on vans.
Since when has Preston worn a beard?
I have the Drake's navy herringbone espadrilles. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a chukka boot with a jute sole and canvas upper, that isn't an espadrille, it's an abomination. No laces on espadrilles!
Never wear them if there is a possibility of rain. Unless you like to walk barefoot.
Never use the word cheap unless you are referring to low quality. Cheap should never be used when referring to a very low price
Next up: huaraches!
Hippies
His feet too big for that sandal is crying lol
Leather sandals beat espadrilles by a long shot
ª
Guys, I'm sorry, but if you're ok with wearing these you gotta be ok with sneakers as well. I'm not ok with either one.
Hold up. So, flip-flops are timeless, aren't they? They were good enough for pharaohs and Japanese emperors, why would they not be good enough for a modern stylish gentleman?
Here are our thoughts on flip flops: www.gentlemansgazette.com/men-start-wearing-flip-flops/?
Please camera handler just shout "collar!" once.
Raphael,
After we die, do we wear Espadrilles or Alpargatas?
Why do these things always turn into a history lesson? Talking of which, your leg model has the worst legs in the history of leg modelling!
Wrong wrong wrong! End of!
does professor prestin has a Disability ?
Cerebral palsy. There is an article about it on GG.
I am sure he is able to spell correctly, unlike you.
Nope! Never! Sorry..not sorry fellas. These should never be found on a grown man's feet.
Negative? False negative or positive?
@paulmcgee1867 DOH! I see your point sir. I forgot a word. Thanks for the catch!
They were invented in china. Arabs brought them to spain, it isn't at all a catalan invention
