For decades, I wore Sperry Top Siders in brown almost every day from Spring to Fall. No socks, of course. I wore them to Walt Disney World for an entire week without discomfort. The key to success in wearing boat shoes is to NEVER wear new ones for more than a couple of hours at a stretch until they're "broken in" to the shape of your feet. For this reason, I often had three identical pair in my closet: one new pair I was slowly breaking in, one pair that were broken in and not looking "well worn", and one pair that were broken in that looked very worn that I'd use when I paint. Painting while wearing boat shoes is great, since they are non-slip and it's usually fairly easy to clean drops of paint off your ankles. When you step on paint drops, the flat bottom squishes the paint flat, allowing it to dry quickly. If you paint in sneakers, the aggressive tread design holds the paint and you end up tracking it from place to place.
I learned a lot of things being in the Navy, and our influence on fashion was of course part of that. Been wearing Sperry topsiders since as my default summer shoe. Never wore it with socks and my wife was definitely not happy about that, so make sure to have at least two pairs you can rotate out on. And of course, some deodorizer lol
Great video! I’m from a northeastern port town, and many of us wear topsiders all year round. No socks in spring/summer, and then wool socks in the fall and winter. Our Dad’s and Uncles wore them with everything shy of a suit. Paired with a matching braided belt you look squared away in most situations. Your take on these classics is spot on! Love the content.
Great video! I appreciate the way you bring out the history in your videos. I didn't embrace the preppy aesthetic back in the 80s, but I bought my first ever pair of Sperry Top Siders last summer and they are becoming one my my go-to shoes for causal, pool/beach wear. Straighten out your boy Aaron! Seriously, y'all should do a meet up in Atlanta and maybe even bring in Jeff the Style OG.
Really Antonio? Are you really starting to become fashion forward by saying that boat shoes are good they are out of style and they are ultra casual get that what you’re doing and when you’re known for timeless style that isn’t.
Love this type of videos when you talk about the history behind it. I currently own two pairs of boat shoes, love them during summer time, I wear them with no-show socks.
i MISS Dexter, loved my loafers. bought my last pair in late 2001 had them till about 2011. the insole was worn out and they were showing their age. it was a travesty learning the brand was gone. i've heard rumblings about the shoe being reintroduced by cobblers in ME. haven't heard any updates in a year or more but it would be awesome to see them again!
I have a pair of _"Boat Shoes"_ and they are comfortable and when walking on gravel, one doesn't really notice it! My are the same colour with three pairs of eyes and original laces! Also they are *Goodyear Welted* as there is stitching between the sole and upper! I would highly recommend them, for everyday _"after work"_ casual with a polo-shirt and jeans!
I have a pair that has the "crochet " look where it looks like they were woven out of leather rope. I wear them in the summer with shorts & a nautical themed shirt like one with a graphic design of a shark on it or a blue polo shirt. I have worn them without socks with a sprinkle of deodorant powder in the shoes & a deodorant spray on my feet but l found that my feet still sweat & feel uncomfortable, so now I wear them with no show socks
I am looking to buy the Thursday Shoes Boat loafers can someone help me with the sizing? I wear a size 10.5 US-M. The site says to order 1 size down (9.5 US-M) but I feel like that might be a bit too much. Should I go with the recommended 1 size down?
There are so many videos on UA-cam saying, thatz Boat Shoes are an absolute nogo unless you are on a boat. If I remember right, even RMRS said so and now these shoes are again so stylish? I am a little confused...
Don't be. Trends come and go, taste is changing. It's the same with for example Alpha M and his stance on tight clothes etc. If you like the design - wear it. Don't try to look "stylish" too much
Good video. Love the history but boat shoes have been out of style since around the mid 2010s. Penny loafers and even horse-bit loafers are way more popular these days.
I quit wearing these types of leather boat shoes. Thin soles, mostly two eyelets, not taunt enough on my feet. Unlined, can rub the feet raw. I now use the Sperry CVO. More comfy for me.
Been wearing boat shoes/sperrys since the early 2010s. That was back in my college days, been hooked ever since. I own six pairs of sperrys and never wear them with socks. Love the feel of leather on my bare toes. Thanks Antonio. All guys should wear boat shoes.
It's hit or miss with these. You have got to spend a little time matching them with the rest of the outfit. They can end up looking stylish or the opposite. There is also a "breed" of boat shoes and mocassins. Some of them look quite good.
Those are great shoes for people age 50 and older. Why would a 25-35 year old want to look 50? I’m guessing the audience of this channel are up in age 🤔
I discovered Mephistopheles Hurrikan boat shoes almost everyday. Often on boats with salt water washing on deck. I get them resoled by Mephisto about every years. I get 3 resoles out of a set of leather uppers. (10 years). I’m on my third pair.
I love this story behind it! Also I've been thinking about boat shoes, about incorporating them into my wardrobe and this video came out at the perfect time❤
South Carolina native here, specifically from downtown Charleston born in the early 70's & yes growing up in the 80's & even still today when-ever I go home to visit family, Sperry & Sebago boat shoe's are on people's feet all over town. It's like the signature shoe of the city for everyone regardless of ethnicity. It's crazy because I was not really a fan of them until I saw a classmate with a pair of Gold Cup Sperry Top Siders on in Junior High along with another popular brand of clothing a lot of Carolinians wear called Duck Head. I remember asking for a pair for Christmas back then BUT I guess they were too pricey & mom said no BUT as soon as I was grown & on my own, I remember the first time I bought myself a pair of Sperry Gold Cup Top Siders while on assignment in Savannah Georgia, I actually bought 2 pairs that day, still have one of them. Where I am going & what I am doing that day is how I make the decision as to whether or not to wear socks, they are some of the best shoes I have ever owned & i'm gonna have it in my will to have a pair of Top Siders on my feet when I am gone....

I use them as defacto house shoes and for washing the car. I also wear Sperry CVOs but with socks. Semper Fi Marine. PS, where is your son going to college?

I don't which Is ugly boat shoes or espadrilles. Don't buy them. Worst looking shoes of all time. No celebrity wears them.
These would be perfect to wear on a private submarine...

Boat shoes are just awful. Seams like something that should have stayed in the last century.

How old fashioned are sneakers now!?
Naaah, they are classics, but if you prefer trendy, then that is also fine.
You need to have a debate with Aron Marino about the boat shoes, he hates them so much I thought you're video here is satirical
Post college I think camp mocs (or other mocs/loafers) are much better than boat shoes. Thursday Boots even has some nice ones.
Indeed!
Is there such a thing as submarine shoes? Whatever you do, don't ever wear them to go down to see the remains of the Titanic.
I’ve always loved these shoes. I think that they are casual but stylish and very versatile.

Boat shoes, hi water shorts, and a cable net sweater around your neck. I personally can't pull that off , but some can.
I think if you "dress as mentioned above" you are certainly "A pulling it off" without a doubt!
