Should you wear sandals / mandals or flip flops or Birkenstock as a man or not? Let us start by saying you can wear whatever you want, whenever you want in this day and age. So the real question is would a dapper gentleman consider sandals to be in good taste?
If you're a fan of the Gentleman's Gazette, chances are you have a slight bias towards the classic realm of things.
So should you wear sandals today or not?
Now, just think about it this way, have you ever seen an outfit that you thought looked better that was based around sandals than if it would if it had regular shoes? Well, I haven't. So maybe you come up with something, if you do, please share in the comments below. At the end of the day, if you care about style and you want to achieve the classy look, I strongly suggest you stay clear of sandals in most situations.
6 reasons why men shouldn't wear sandals:
First of all, don't wear sandals because most of them look really cheap. Just think of Tevas, Birkenstocks, or flip-flops. Most of them are made out of cheap materials and that's what they look like, cheap. Even if you upgrade and you invest a few hundred dollars in Salvatore Ferragamo flip-flops, they're still just that, flip-flops.
The second reason sandals are not ideal for men is that most men don't have
pretty feet. Now, most women I know really take good care of their feet, it's just something they know they want to pay attention to because often times they wear sandals that expose their feet and they literally want to put their best foot forward. Now, the same isn't true for men. Hairy toes, ungroomed toenails, calluses, warts, and other stuff is just not pretty to look at.
The third reason is no one really wants to see your feet unless, of course, you're a foot fetishist. Just think of the person behind you on the plane or on the bus taking off their shoes and putting them right next to you, I mean isn't that ugly?
The fourth reason sandals are not a good option for gentlemen is that they're a fashion faux pas, more often than not. Just think of country clubs, weddings, nice restaurants, or cities, in general. These are all not good places to wear sandals. Why? Well, they weren't made for that environment.
Which brings us to the next point number five, sandals will make you look like you didn't put much care and effort into your outfit. Sandals are a convenient casual look that you can just slip onto your feet but it's nothing you'd ever want to show up to for interview, for example.
Also last but not least, sandals can be bad for your feet in the long term especially if you walk a lot. The lack of structure is just not conducive and the foot bed is usually quite flat.
If you decide to wear sandals how should you wear them?
I think they look best when worn with shorts, maybe a polo shirt, maybe it's so hot at the beach that you don't even need them, that's okay too. If you get those fisherman sandals, you can maybe even get away with wearing them with a pair of linen pants or let's say a pair of seersucker pants or slacks that are longer, it just has to be a distinct summer fabric, otherwise, it just looks out of place. - Навчання та стиль
You covered the topics a lot better than most of UA-camrs out there who will just full blown hating on sandals so hard it should be flagged as hate-speech.
Also, I think cultural background plays quite a lot. There are countries which formal traditional wears would be look as good even if it worn with leather sandals.
I have to say, I am pretty pleased with how GG has become more accepting. I think that makes them a much better channel.
I completely disagree with you Raphael! My Roman gladiator outfit looks Soooooo much better with sandals than they did with my Oxford shoes.
Don't forget bedsheet togas
Show us a picture in your gladiator outfit, please!
I bet only you believe that.
@@ruthbam true
Well i dont like sandals but i used then for my roman acting so i understand you
I always wear slippers because the world is my living room
I freaking love sandals. And there are so many different types with a wide range in style and expression. Really hope they will continue to grow in respect and be accepted into many different types of wardrobes.!
One of the reasons that I love this channel so much is that the presenters don’t take themselves too seriously, their smiles are open and honest, rather than smarmy, even when talking about clothing options they dislike. I’m always waiting for SRS to break out in giggles. Is there/can there be a blooper reel? Or do gentlemen never tell? 😄
You are probably one of the few modern dandies who truly understand and follow the preachings of true dandyism.
@Gregory Shuteev
*_Yeah, that's very true..._*
@@letoubib21 He is discreet, ulike other "dandies" who have the vapid flamboyance of a peacock.
@@drew8235 I will.
What exactly is a dandie or dandyism? I have heard talk about it but only ever inferred what it was and, have never gotten a solid definition.
@@DinkiDoggo The term is used very poetically in this context. The original term was used to describe a man who dressed to show their wealth or class status. A Dandy was also against working for living. Most people here know that Raphael is a hard working man in business. I would describe Raphael as a Classic Style Enthusiast, not a dandy.
Fun fact: Ancient Rome soldiers wore sandals with socks! (socks was made out of wool using one knitting needle way of knitting. Have a pair from reenactors, it is VERY durable, no holes for almost 2.5 years)
only in the cold areas, like britain
I can't imagine you wearing suit in the place where I live with 40 degrees heat
@guess what Most places use Celsius rather than Fahrenheit, this is most likely to be in Celsius and therefore is not cold
@guess what maybe you wanted to say "some little countries and US"?
Good points. I wore a pair of huaraches to a resort in the Bahamas. They were absolutely fantastic for wearing around the pools and beaches and even a little bit in the really touristy parts of Nassau. But yes, once it was time to hit the casino or nicer restaurants, penny loafers were much better. I found the huaraches looked particularly good with shorts and even my beige linen slacks.
I live in Texas. So I wear sandles and shorts 9 months out of the year. Olukai has many classy sandles that are quality, don't break the bank ($500 for your example 😳) and are very comfortable. Reef is your go-to for cheap but good sandles.
Man sandals are never classy. Sad yes, classy never.
@@leighsutherland6222 What's wrong with them? Why are they sad? Why are you scared to wear them?
Those huaraches were proudly made in Sahuayo Michoacan in Mexico
M S less than 20 dollars here in Mexico
If you ever have a foot issue like athletes foot an attractive and well supporting sandal is the only way to go. If I have to be outside for a long time in direct scorching sunlight I wouldn’t care what anyone thought. I’d want my feet to remain cool and breathe. In a shoe your foot is in the dark. I’m not big on flip flops at all though.
There are so many brands of men’s sandals out there these days that have very good structure, quality materials and arch support that you can wear almost anywhere when it’s very hot outside - such as Spiaggia Libera, Colorado, Rockport etc
Here in Brazil we use flip flops as much as we use air to inhale 😂😂😂
Birkenstocks are not cheap nor bad quality.
Those Fisherman's sandals are completely fine and great sockless with shorts. A more classic and classy option than most others. I can't even understand why there is any debate about it on a channel for classic clothes like this. Will set you apart from all the others wearing flip flops, sliders etc
Man sandals are NOT classy. Wear flip flops, not sandals. Since you do not respect yourself, try showing respect for the rest of humanity, who will need Clorox to rid themselves of the image of a man wearing sandals!
@@leighsutherland6222 flip flops are trash. Fisherman's Sandals are more keeping with the style of Gentleman's Gazette IMO. Definitely going to go out and get a pair now you've said that 😉
@@jonstern7511 And that is why you look the way you do! hahaha
@@leighsutherland6222 I look fantastic mate. Better and better all the time
Earth Runners sandals look great too.
Raphael, I just love how professional and unbiased you are; even on the topic of menswear you genuinely dislike.
I'm also really happy that you introduced us to the Huarache sandals, as well. They do look like nice alternatives to most of the "summer footwear" that are out there for men.
Those images of "men's feet" are inappropriate. I had to turn my face away in disgust. Horrible. Men should really take better care of themselves.
Nothing better in the middle of a hot summer,I wear them daily at work when anything else is too stifling in the heat
It really depends on the culture and climate of the country.
From a western perspective, sandals may well be viewed as too casual and to be avoided unless you are at the beach/pool area. On the other hand, leather sandals are the go-to form of footwear in much of Southeast Asia, and are typically worn instead of shoes due to the climate. Case in point, it is perfectly acceptable to visit a temple in Thailand wearing sandals, whereas shorts/sleeveless shirts are a definite no-no. Nevertheless, as this video states, there is a time and a place for everything. Sandals would most certainly be frowned upon in formal/business settings when a pair of leather shoes would be expected.
Great Video! keep up the great work Sir. :)
7th Reason why men shouldn't wear sandals: By & large, women can't stand them on men, *especially* Flip-Flops!!
Note: I don't consider Huaraches, sandals. (Which is why they look good & can be worn with other outfits!) Especially the ones you showed. Aside from the closed heel, the toe is completely covered from view, even if air can get through. (They are like Boat shoes, but they breath, and made from leather, they still look classy.)
Flip flops are not sandals. Not even close. However, you are right that normal, well-adjusted women hate men who wear sandals! Less than a half percent of men in the world can rock sandals. Do not assume you are one of them. Flip flops are perfectly acceptable. I live in a resort town, and unfortunately, have seen it all.
@@leighsutherland6222 Personally, my favorite were the guys (@ Stanford) who wore Birkenstocks, WITH socks (: P), and shorts! It's kind of like not eating doo doo. No one should ever even need to tell you not to...
@@Cousin. hahaha!
Just because you look bad in something doesn’t mean you have to take it out on everyone else 😂
I believe it depends on the sandals and the environment. Of course it shouldn' t be a part of towns gentleman, on a regular basis, but for warmer places or casual environments it is, in my opinion, acceptable. Proper sandals on the right occasions can be a go. By the way, I am from Brazil, Sta. Catarina state.
Love the channel and appreciate all that I'm learning. The intro is outstanding and you always have a well spoken and ease of delivery that is a joy to listen to. With a perfected 30-40's fashion charm, you are easily my favorite channel covering style. So, thank you. That all said, I do have a request, if I may be so bold. Could you please cover high quality subtitutes for leather and wool. I'd prefer not to use those products, but that is 90% of what is reccomended. Kinda leaves me with just reading reviews and trusting my own judgment. Which the reason I appreciate your channel so much is because I don't trust my own judgement. Well, thank you again for your time. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Love my Doc Marten “Charro Brando” sandals and constantly get complements when I sport them. They are not your typical sandal and are still very boot-like.
Birkenstocks are incredibly well made and basically indestructible.
They look very nice with wide linen trousers and shirt in earth colours.
You are just rationalizing your fashion faux pas.
But would you ever use the word "elegant" in connection with Birkenstocks?
I wear Harrisons oat linen hollywood trousers with tan leather sandal, its becomes my favourite summer outfit
Cultural context is important! While I agree with you in general, pachuco huaraches are really snappy with a guayabera and linen trousers. Espadrilles in Texas seem to shout "I'm pretending to be a New Englander!" I'd feel the same about someone from New Jersey wearing cowboy boots.
Another great video! :)
I did not expect a video about sandals!
As Sven mentioned, sandals make sense in a tropical climate. I live in Canada and don't wear sandals at all, but now I am on vacation in India (where I originally am from) and I only wear sandals (not flip flops). Even when it comes to materials, you are unlikely to use leather sandals in India, especially in the south, where it rains pretty much all the time.
Those Fisherman sandals look (imho) really feminine. The Huarache's or espadrilles are great (and potential inexpensive) alternatives for casual footwear with hot weather.
They don't look a bit feminine to me they look classic and stylish with shorts (though I wouldn't wear them with long trousers)
Last weekend i met an old friend of mine....he is not so in fashion...he has a fresh summer outfit as i noticed. It looks good....BUT hehe....he wear trecking sandals WITH socks. But in his case....he's a geologist! and they are a little special.
Nice research, Raffael, the best explanation i've heard until now. These mexican sandals are not bad!...your combination looks very good
Raphael....Great video.....my favorite go to shoes during the summer months are spectators and huaraches...keep up the outstanding work
Where to get that woven leather dark brown loafers from? A link would be appreciated.
I definitely wasn't ready for images coming my way in this video
Great video! Thank you for bringing up socks with sandals, You're right it's a bad look.
I think flip flops are for the pool, and sloppy anywhere else. However I do enjoy my birkenstocks and fisherman's sandals on hot weekends. They let my feet remain cool without looking as bad as flip flops.
Really? You wear Birkies and have the gall to make negative statements about flip flops? Go smoke another joint...
spare me your lectures about which you know nothing
Could you please do brand reviews on Charles Tyrwhitt, Brooks Brothers and van Laack?
Love the channel!

Gentleman's Gazette and bleu de chauffe sandals !!!
@@gentlemansgazette _Do you have reviews on best comfortable Sandals, Flipflops & Slippers somewhere in your channel?_
I have a pair of huaraches for very warm weather. I don't like the give on the sides closer to the heel but their open structure definitely helps keep one's feet cooler.
Please do not wear them. I am embarrassed for you.
Have you looked at mohinders shoes? I have a pair of the original water buffalo woven set which are great going on holiday in warmer climate for casual events (wither it be the beach or walking along the seaside on a pair of jeans/linen trousers), agree on no socks with them or if you have to the dark ankle socks
I have a beautiful pair of dark brown leather sandals from Ralph. They are beautifully made with a stacked leather heel. I wear them near the water or when it's 90 degrees or above. They look good with flat front shorts and a t-shirt. Simple.
Sandals and Flip-Flops - YES !
With socks? NO
I'd rather see sandals with socks than a guy's toes. Displaying your toes out in public is obscene and disgusting.
@@Timrath Displaying your hands in public is disgusting and you should cover them. See how irrational that sounds? You probably have either some phobia or disgusting feet.
@@Timrath
What about women's toes?
Great tips
LOL never socks with shorts unless you play soccer or live in a retirement village in Florida ! 😊🧦👟 Huaraches - knew they were there but kinda in the back of my mind until you mentioned. Maybe not gentlemanly but sounds good for the back porch, grilling, riding the lawn tractor on a hot humid day. Surely more protection than the current "cap-toe ? " leather sandal I occasionally wear now.
Durable Socks that can be worn at the beach. That’s a great idea.
I'm glad you've addressed the Classical Antiquity origin, and at least tried to put together outfits with sandals you can stomach. You've made some major concessions since your first sandal video. I am placated.
Thanks for another good video.
Huaraches and boat shoes are the way to go, apart from the pool and beach.
...Although as a pilot in Florida,
if a plane is not air conditioned, I wear "nice" flip flops or boat shoes to the aircraft, and fly barefoot
Is there a link to Etsy, where you got the sandals?
what about crocs?
To quote the Mafioso "Little Nicky Scarfo" (when he refused to give testimony): "Same answer, Sir".
Great video. Fisherman's sandals are my pick; for a smart tropical look 😎
I love my chaco sandals. They’re not cheap either. You could wear them almost everyday and they’ll last you over a decade. I wear them a lot but never in a social setting. like the look of boat shoes but my Sperry boat shoes give me bad blisters. I’ll look into the woven loafers. Thank you!
I rock the Jesus Sansles in summer but I live in Australia where you can style them with dress shorts and linen shirts beach style switch the shorts out for a nice pair of level 511 or 512 even though it gets scorchingly hot in OZ there are dress codes for men long pants and enclosed shoes you get around the shoe issue with the leather sandle
Huaraches and Swims swimming loafers are PERFECT for this list
I have a pair if sandels purely for things like runnning the garbage out, picking up a delivery, or for showering at the gym.
Link to the Huarache sandals?
I'm from Brazil, and here we use flip flops for everything.
I wear sandals occasionally because I live in a tropical island in Japan so it’s a common look out here. But nonetheless, I saw someone the other day with a button up, gold watch, dark blue jeans and..... sandals. Way to just throw your entire look away lol
*Sudoku
funny i just bought some fisherman sandals. Rafael you seem to be one step ahead of me!
What type of sandals were the first ones?
Birkenstock sandals and jeans back some 45 to 50 years ago were considered quite acceptable out on the Pacific Coast of the US. I still have a pair and find them to be the most comfortable sandal I've ever owned. When the soles wear out, they can easily be replaced, a plus. That said, I generally don't wear them to town, and since I do quite a bit of walking, yes they do tend to capture dirt, gravel, and small twigs. I also agree about sandals and socks--Never! Birkenstocks can't be beat for summer wear at the beach with jeans or chinos. Oh...and regarding short pants, there comes a time when older men (like me) should give up on shorts. It makes a man look like a ten year old boy; something I try to avoid.
I only wear roman caligae, cant get more classic than that!
Finally a video for Texans
I just can't believes u are a citizen from Brazil hahaha. I'm brazilian and a huge fã of your work!!
I got my sandals from the Dollar tree and I wear them everywhere I am styling
4:47 M/S Star Pisces, originally M/S Viking Kalypso built in Finland 😁 it was a regular here on Åland until 1991
Here in Malaysia, sandals like flip flops is the official go-to shoes since it's so hot here.
Well since you brought it up, a beach wear episode...or a series would be great!
Lot's of idiosyncratic factors here, in South America and Europe they are worn every time. Thumbs up for the Huaraches; the Espadrilles/cocuizas/alpargatas can be very stylish and exotic, Italians have great taste for them and use them all the time, it's a "Latino" thing.
Could have used a warning about all those gross messed up feet and toe nails. I was watching during lunch. 🤮😄
Yuck indeed
What did you expect?
I hate feet, was expecting the worst after this comment... But? They're just feet
Back in south africa sandels are the norm for both genders even into the early months of winter , likely due to the hotter weather
regards from Brasil, sempre acompanho os vídeos, nice vid Raphael.
brazil sucks
Great tan!
There are many different types of sandals not covered here for time reasons I’m sure, but what about Tevas ? They are much more supportive and fashion aware.
I recommend the bleu de Chauffe sandals !!
I knew something was familiar about you and when you said you are brazilian it made sense.
My wife is brazilian and we are stuck here during this quarantine and I agree I won’t wear sandals even in the heat here I do wear huarache shoes/sandals that’s as much as I’ll compromise
Personally, if im going to the beach or pool, then i wear sandals...anything other than that i wear sneakers as i never know if im going somewhere that can have objects that can injury your feet
Actually true french ''espadrilles'' are much better than any other type of shoes for summer holidays. Other type of closed shoes provoke foot perspiration, which smells, which is not the best thing for a man... Nice looking sandals and espadrilles are a better choice. Just my opinion.
Well, like you said, their is no universal truth... I live in Nigeria, Sandals and flip-flops are norms over here. How do I wear my caftan, senator or my traditional clothe without sandals on a Friday.
I live in Pakistan, Whenever It Rains We Have Knee deep water on our roads, so we wear flip flops or sandals with shorts or casual trousers. Secondly our summers are very very hot and Most likely during day in casual environment when u r grocery shopping or lounging we wear sandals instead of shoes Because shoes are impractical options in these scenarios. Other than these times we wear shoes.
What about alpargatas should gentleman wear them????

You just forgot to mention that sandals are also very useful for punishing naughty children. hahaha kidding aside loved the video. And thanks for the honorable mention of the name "chinelo" as we usually call here in Brazil.
"Chinelo" are flip flops, sandals are women's shoes
Sir , I am from India . Here , the kurta pajama dress looks good with sandals. Can you please check that out , thanks.
Check a Peshawari chapal .what do you think of those
cheap sandals? Have you seen the price for the fisherman sandals from Hermes or the row?
Sandles and flip flops are the only footwear you will ever see me wearing but I live in the deep south I can't wear close in shoes because it bothers my feet. But I'm kinda lucky as I have baby feet so I always have women complementing how cute my feet are.
Ha, I’m sure plenty of ladies are saying “Look at that cool guy in those goodyear welted sandals.”
Jstatham1979 I mean it’s possible if everyone else is wearing flip flops at that setting.
Not necessarily paying attention to the bottom of the shoe but the shoe itself yes, I'd much rather see loafers which I wear myself than flip flops
Good thing I was not eating at 6:00 😂
I'm a guy and I take care of my feet to the highest standard, even been told my feet look better than most woman feet, it's all about personal preference with good taste, If you know how to style your wardrobe then flip flop on my fellow gents.....
In sweden basicly everyone does this:
May to august = t-shirt, shorts, sandals or rainclothes... some years u need jacket and long pants too but not every year.
September to april = veeeeryyyyy muuuch clothes and boots.
In my case... if i should not wear dress shoes, boots or sport shoes i have to wear sandals.
I can’t wear shoes that you not tie or in some way tighten. I can’t wear loafers, espandrillos or shoes in similar ways.. boat shoes i can’t wear either actually. But the key for me is that you tie or tighen the shoes/sandals in any way
Birkenstocks and their less known predessors, Moosbacher (by Bama), were the signature look of the "Eco", the "emo" of the 80s. I was part of that sub-culture for a while, we dressed very casually, mostly in nature colours and materials (cotton, linen etc), second-hand shopped most of our stuff, used recycled materials, cared about the environment and basically were very angsty about the future, with toxic rain, nuclea war lurking around the corner, poppers and yuppies ruling the mainstream, we longed for harmony in nature and spirit. We wore our clogs and sandals all the time until they disintegrated. The hype about Birkenstocks only reached unknown heights in the 90s and 00s after the brand was no longer hip among hardcore afficionados, they are made in China now and part of the big profit machine that's fashion and footwear in general. When they were still a niche-product, they were really nice and had a total feelgood-factor.
I live in Florida. I don’t wear sandals, but I’m willing to try anything to deal with some of the 110 degree summer days.
Regarding socks I figured out that I tend to pair socks with (regular long) trousers. I would find long trousers, sandals and no socks more disturbing than with socks, but short trousers with sandals and socks more disturbing than without socks. Silly me? :)
I wear sandals all year around but i live in Mississippi the town i live in you see more people wearing sandals then shoes unless the person is in school, working or got off work/school other wise you see tons of people wearing sandals but it stay hot here basically all year long.
Huarache sandals are the best!
Why do you think Birks look cheap some are made of leather and cork? Thank you !
He was refering to rubber or plastic flip flops, not Birkenstocks. Birkenstocks are not poorly made but they simply look ghastly outside the house. If you ask me: they look ghastly inside too.
Great video, I agree sandals have a time and place to be worn! 😊👍🏿
Agree 100%
