Very informative video, you explained the process clearly and made me want to try this, and I’ve also never stitched anything other than a waist button onto some chinos. Well done!!
Did you have any small gaps where the material didn't reach each other to essentially close? I have some gaps around the steering wheel clips, I think my material was just a tad too short to make it look sealed. I did my best with the thread to to close it and cover it.
I have done this on my 2010 Subaru Liberty GT around 4 years ago. When I sold the car last year the wheel was in OK condition and it does degrade over time especially when you park the car outside.
Man you must be a mind reader because I’ve been thinking about doing this. My biggest concern is how well the suade holds up over time. Report back after a year or so and let us know if the material is showing any wear.
RMutt1 will do man! To be honest though, this should hold up extremely well with how thick the suede is. I can’t imagine it showing wear within a year or two
I have a cheap wrap on my Ford Fiesta made from a micro suede type material and it’s been great for the 2-3 months I’ve had it on so far, it bobbles up a little in the first few weeks but it smooths out again pretty quick, I love the material but my biggest issue with my own wrap is that I didn’t use any double sided tape so it does move very slightly although it’s not noticeable when driving. Much better than the 16 year old leather it’s covering regardless 👌🏻
RMutt1 I got mine a couple of months ago. it got dirty(sweaty hands) and I washed it(with a mixture of water and woolite detergent with a toothbrush) removed the excess mixture with a cloth and let it dried over night it was like new again :)
I think what I'd do is divide the larger section into two and the red middle marker. End one half there and start the other half there. Easier than dealing with yards of thread - which is when I tend to mess up sewing projects - thy end up as thread bird's nest... The steering wheel looks great btw.
I ordered a leather one from Wheelskins for my F150 (weird how I ended up here, right? Lol) and the first time was a little screwy. It isn't as factory looking as this one, but it's a nice alternative to the $10 Wal-Mart ones. Lol. Doing that sewing takes a lot of patience for sure for it to come out right. You did good though, looks clean and like something you'd see on high end cars.
My steering wheel is pretty clean as I do have a low mile EVO however I’d like to keep it clean so I was gonna wrap it and protect it but do you think putting the double sided sticky tape on it will ruin it in the future if I ever decide to remove the cover? Like is the tape extremely adhesive and damaging? Please get back on your thoughts
They don’t sell one specifically for my car but it’s the same size as the evo one will this work or not? I can’t find anything specific for my car or it’s a full oem wheel for $300+
Great job, I'd never have the patience. The oem cover looks like it could just have been coated, the leather didn't look worn. My wrx wheel looks crappy up top, the black coating over the leather is a little different than yours. Sucks because the rest of the wheel is great. Will probably pay someone to rewrap mine, so I won't notice the mistakes I'd make.
Go on aliexpress and find the kits there for the actual price.... Plus way more options. And any vehicle you have is possible. Thats where I got all mine from, even genuine leather. All that being said, the kits are really good.
Looking at doing something like this to an STI steering wheel, came across this video and your Channel and man the quality on this video was on point! Goals for my Channel
Fuck that. Id just buy an aftermarket rim and quick release kit. Looks sexy but i would rather not spend ages trying to get it perfect when i could spend £150 on a great wheel that i know wont spin or be off centre
Ha, you do know... a lot of the old school mx riders that also 4 wheel green sticker rigs own sewing machines to repair their own stuff. Also Italian Taylor's are men with sewing machines... I would recommend a better thread over time that thread will fray.
You don't need to measure any thread. Just do the knot and start, then when getting to the end, cut it, and tie it. It's freakin taught in 6/7th grade. Good lord.
Lol so you’re going to run an entire spool of thread through each stitch? Ok. You also need tension on the thread. So feel free to make a video showing me how to do it better!
Marty from MCM should watch this
just what i was thinking!!
uh yes he needs that a lot.
I pasted it to their newest video. lmao They probably won't see it.

Do you recommend it ? Would you choose alcantara/suied over napa leather for daily driving?

A soldering iron works great for pinpoint accuracy on melting nylon threads
Evolve 614 good point!!
I would imagine a punk stick would probably also be a great option since there’s no open flame, but there’s just enough to burn the thread

ltskinol thank you!
are you able to remove the existing leather wrap before putting the suede on top?
Just subscribed👍🏾 Great clip✊🏾
So how permanent is the adhesive? I want to preserve my leather which is in good shape and wrap it like this. I heard Subaru leather damages easily
They don't offer an option for 1st generation IS300, what a shame...

For sure!
Thanks for posting this. Was about to buy a wrap. Not anymore. Lol. I’m not a clothing maker lol
Lol
Hey ADA, why not remove the old leather wrap first? Would doing so be just a huge pain because it’s glued on or????
Correct. That is the original material and there’s really no need to remove it
Can you feel the tape under the cover?
No you do not
